Out and about with the Rural Coffee Caravan produce exhibits were of an extremely high standard and our youngest adult entrant took home more cups than anyone.
Benhall Green Fete We had a few more visitors to our van than usual at Benhall Green in August, when our visit (purposefully) coincided with their village fete! A few words about the day from Pauline Graham, our volunteer village contact at Benhall:
There was a BBQ, tea and cakes and a busy bar, a raffle, a Tug of War, plus music from local musicians.
We only had a few weeks to organise this year’s Show instead of the usual 8 months but it has been voted a great success. We began with a short Memorial service led by the Rev Rachel Cornish, as always a moving moment of reflection. Then came the fun, with Andy the Clown and his little helper (pictured below), Punch and Judy, Stilt Walkers and Children’s Sports — a miniature Olympic Games!
It was just what the villagers needed and to quote one of them at the end of the day, sums it up perfectly “We did our forbears proud in a spirit of cooperation and goodwill, with love and humanity tangible throughout the day.”
There were plenty of stalls selling local crafts, a display of Village History and Family History, and the ever popular Tarot reading. The flower and

Benhall, Combs, Gazeley, Brandon, Redlingfield, Wingfield , Aldringham and Worlingham. Gazeley Josh from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service joined us during our village visit to Gazeley in September, and gave a short talk to our visitors regarding fire safety in the home and the importance of having a smoke alarm fitted.
Combs Green
At a recent visit to Combs Green resident Cheryl was happy to share with us the beautiful bed quilt that she has lovingly been making over the last 2 years, as a gift for her son’s wedding. Each section has a special connection with the couple from their first date to their wedding day, and many significant moments in their life in between. A blessing of a gift that can become a family heirloom. Cheryl is now keeping busy on another project, this time it’s knitting. What a clever lady!

Brandon Festival We were pleased to be supporting the Brandon Festival on August 21st. Opening the show was the local town crier, Brenda Wilson. The festival was attended by a good sized crowd and the atmosphere was uplifting and joyful. It was so nice to see people in the area coming together again.
was carried round on the breeze as they plucked, strummed and squeezed their melodeons, dulcimer, fiddle, banjos, phonofiddles, double bass and jig dolls.
Some cracking tunes from DJ Dynamix’s Mobile Disco kept everyone in the festival spirit throughout the day and visitors to the show were entertained by stage

Wingfield
Visits to Aldringham and Wingfield were a trifle damp! Not enough to put off these hardy souls who think a cuppa in the rain with neighbours is much better than a lonely cuppa at home on their own! We know this because they tell us! Redlingfield
Aldringham
There were over 40 visitors to Redlingfield last time as they opted to ‘launch’ their newly installed defibrillator alongside our visit. Thank heavens for Hazel and her profile baking!
Worlingham
In September we were joined on some of our visits by team members from Suffolk Sight and OneLife Suffolk, during National Eye Health Awareness Week. They were glad to be on hand to answer questions and offer advice and guidance on ways to maintain eye health, and also to offer mini health checks on the day. 7
A bit about the ‘Coffee’ in ‘Rural Coffee Caravan’
A warm aromatic fragrance, emanating from a small batch of speciality coffee beans, made way for a new passion on the road to discovery of what really good coffee is all about.
The business now has over twenty four outlets, including a couple inside East of
England Co-operative stores, as part of the ‘Sourced Locally’ initiative. Coffeelink operate a 1972 converted fire engine, used for events and match days at Ipswich Town Football Club, also available for weddings and private hire. Good to know, is that they have been
supplying their environmentally friendly fully compostable, bio-degradable take-a-way cups, with recyclable lids, since 2012! Solar panelling was also installed on the roof of their Roastery and this was recognised by the Suffolk Carbon Charter, awarding them the Silver Level. A

led to the birth of a new flexible coffee subscription service too, so this real passion When

in a small coffee shop in London, little did they know that this would be the start of a new partnership, leading to their own coffee store on the Waterfront at Ipswich Marina, in 2005. Then last year, their newest flagship Cafe opened in Woodbridge, Suffolk. The company now roast coffee beans from 40 single origins worldwide,
from their Roastery located in Ipswich, serving their speciality coffee throughout their own cafes and kiosks, selling to trade, restaurants and hotels too. They also supply coffee machinery, parts and products across all the well known coffee brands.

So, with an ever growing ‘good coffee’ appreciative customer base, so too do the links, to Coffeelink’s ever flourishing coffee business. We have been on our own journey of discovery for everything coffee since 2005, making us realise there is a lot more to great tasting coffee than we all think…
You can find out more about Coffeelink’s journey on their website: www.coffeelink.com and Facebook page: www.facebook.com/coffeelink.uk or call them for more information about their new subscription service on: 01473 740 189.
About 15 years ago Azzouz contacted me and asked us to go and meet him at his café on the Waterfront in Ipswich to learn more about what we do, and to see how he could help. He loved what we did at the Rural Coffee Caravan; it really resonated with him. He offered to supply us with coffee and has done so ever since. As we’ve grown, so has his generosity with us. It’s delicious coffee, everyone comments on it, and it’s really nice to know that we’re giving people on our visits such a top quality drink. People are often surprised that the coffee we pour for them is ‘proper coffee!’ It’s so great to know we’re being so well supported and we offer our continued thanks to Azzouz and Rebecca for their support. Digital Technology – helping people in Suffolk live well in their own homes RCC Team Member Becky reports on a new range of digital care devices available through referrals to Suffolk County Council.
innovative and agile ways for the people in Suffolk, who need care and support, to continue to live well in their own homes."
The Rural Coffee Caravan team, along with staff from Suffolk Family Carers, have had training on some new kit offered by Suffolk County Council, through their new digital partnership Cassius.

Now I admit I am a bit stuck in the mud, and of the mind that 'if it isn't broken why fix it,' but this technology has changed my mind. These new gadgets help people remain as independent as possible. Cassius First Assess
The collection of products are discreet and stylish yet most importantly helpful and are worth considering. Maybe not for you and maybe not now, but perhaps you know of someone they could be of benefit to. When it came to needing things like this for Grandma I was only aware of a personal alarm pendant as an option. It really is worth spending a few minutes reading about the other options so should the time come, you know that there is something to help with every situation.
This includes a hub, motion, temperature and door sensors as well as a magic plug to see how often a device is used e.g. kettle. There is no camera so it is unintrusive. With the person’s permission family and GP can access the portal where the data is used to help assess care needs. Cassius Care Phone
With the new digital partnership between Suffolk County Council, Alcove, Provide and Rethink they are launching with a range of Cassius products that with time will be extended. The idea is that the technology will help assess a person’s care needs initially to help ensure that any care plan is personalised to the individual.
Whilst this looks like a tablet it is set up with tiles showing photos of who the user wants to call. It is set up so it is a single press to call the person.
Helen Bowey, Alcove founder/CEO is quoted on accessandmobilityprofessional.com as saying "Cassius is more than just technology to meet people's needs - it provides

Cassius Go Pendant A modern version of these pendants that have the red button. This one is rain drop shaped and all one colour. It is a fall sensor and if you pinch the top you can talk to the monitoring centre who would be able to send for emergency assistance. A second pinch cancels the request if set off in error. Added bonuses are that it also includes GPS, it’s waterproof and it also gives charging notifications.
time. However it can also have bespoke messages and photos downloaded to it. An example could be a reminder to brush teeth, have a drink or feed the cat. The device is plugged into the mains. Cassius Alexa Whilst you may think of Alexa as a device to play music this one can be set up to be used for so much more. Using spoken instructions you can control lights, make video calls, create shopping lists and order the items on them, as well as being a way to call for help, rather than wearing a pendant. Ideal for people living with mobility issues.
Cassius Smart Watch This looks like a smart watch and is very 'James Bond' in my opinion! It includes GPS and can be used for two way communication.
Should you wish to be referred for an assessment to see if this kind of digital technology would be a benefit to you, do speak to one of our Community Engagement team members, who can ask the Suffolk County Council Independent Wellbeing Service to contact you. Whilst some equipment is free the service charges are means tested.
The James Watch can be set up with geofencing to send alerts should the person wearing move outside of a set area. It could be particularly useful for those living with dementia who may forget their way home.
Cassius Reminder Clock This looks like a dementia clock with a clear display saying the day of the week, date and 11

More Than A Shop news We’ve been out on the road again awarding more certificates to the wonderful rural stores who play such vital roles in our village communities. More Than A Shop celebrates them and thanks them for being places of friendship and welcome for the more isolated and vulnerable customers in our neighbourhoods. Becoming part of our network means we can also support the shop teams with signposting advice if queries are raised.

Liz, Colin & Luci received the shop’s well deserved award on behalf of everyone involved in running it. Manager Liz and a team of volunteers have done an amazing job of keeping the shop going and stocked during the pandemic. They converted the shop to a hatch system at the door to keep people safe, as it is a very small shop, and the system is still in place. Members of the community nominated them for all their hard work and said they just “wouldn’t have managed if the shop had closed.” Tel: 01787 282371

Recipe Corner Courgette and Lemon Drizzle Loaf
Westhorpe resident, Diane, who attends our visit to the village, has been growing her own courgettes this year. Very successfully! She brought some along to the recent visit to share them out with everyone, and kindly offered us her unusual recipe suggestion!
Ingredients
Method
325g courgettes, grated
•
Line the tin with baking parchment or use loaf tin liner.
120g salted butter
•
3 medium or large eggs
Place grated courgettes in a tea towel and wring out as much moisture as possible over the sink (the loaf will be too soggy if the moisture is not removed).
280g self raising flour
•
½ tsp vanilla extract or seed of ½ vanilla pod 1tsp lemon extract and/or zest of 2 lemons
Melt the butter in a pan, then place in a bowl with the sugar. Add the courgettes to the bowl, along with the lemon extract and or zest, vanilla and eggs, then mix until combined. Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Fold in carefully.
½ tsp baking powder Pinch salt For the drizzle
•
Tip the mixture into the lined tin and bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the middle of the loaf comes out clean.
Juice of 2 lemons 60g icing sugar
•
When loaf is baked, remove from the oven and set aside while drizzle is made.
Equipment

Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Poorly World Mental Health Day - 10th October 2021
Growing up it was always drummed in that ‘Anything worth doing is worth doing well’ but is that always realistic? Does it add extra pressure? Yes, in an ideal world it would be super to do everything to the best of our ability but with so much to balance we need to be able to step back and prioritise.
Taking care
of mental health
So, rather than being annoyed that I haven’t been for a walk, maybe walking in the garden would be a good compromise. When cleaning the kitchen and mopping the floors feels too much - instead, picking a task such as doing the washing up always helps my mental state. I might not have cleaned the whole house but that alone makes a difference. When things feel overwhelming, there are lots of avenues for support:
Anything worth doing… I came upon a post on Facebook which explained that ‘Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly’ with the thinking behind it being it’s better than not doing it at all. The post explained: “Brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all, when that 2 minutes seems exhausting… Changing your clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible.”

changed beyond recognition...
The Stranding by Kate Sawyer
Her world fell to pieces. From the bones she built a new life.
Recommended by Not Just Books, Thetford who launched their in store book club with this at the start of August. Jane says: “There are loads of end of the world scenarios out there in the world of books, but we found this one to be truly uplifting and a story of hope, resilience and love. Even better, Kate is based in Bury St Edmunds so a real local author.“
Ruth lives in the heart of the city. Working, drinking, falling in love: the rhythm of her vivid and complicated life is set against a background hum of darkening news reports from which she deliberately turns away. When a new romance becomes claustrophobic, Ruth chooses to leave behind the failing relationship, but also her beloved friends and family, and travels to the other side of the world in pursuit of her dream life working with whales in New Zealand. But when Ruth arrives, the news cycle she has been ignoring for so long is now the new reality. Far from home and with no real hope of survival, she finds herself climbing into the mouth of a beached whale alongside a stranger. When she emerges, it is to a landscape that bears no relation to the world they knew before.
A bold, utterly unforgettable novel about new beginnings and the survival of hope that’s already a huge hit with booksellers, The Stranding tells the story of one woman’s extraordinary journey as the world reels from a seismic catastrophic event.
When all has been razed to the ground, what does it mean to build a life? The Stranding is a story about the hope that can remain even when the world is changed beyond recognition.

...and an uplifting novel about community, friendship and the passage of time.
The Lido by Libby Page the local lido, where she swims every day, remains a constant reminder of the past and her beloved husband George. Kate has just moved and feels adrift in a city that is too big for her. She's on the bottom rung of her career as a local journalist, and is determined to make something of it.
Recommended by RCC CEO Ann Osborn
An uplifting novel about the importance of friendship, the value of community, and how ordinary people can protect the things they love.
So when the lido is threatened with closure, Kate knows this story could be her chance to shine. But for Rosemary, it could be the end of everything. Together they are determined to make a stand, and to prove that the pool is more than just a place to swim - it is the heart of the community. Included in the Guardian’s round-up of the best new faces of fiction in 2018, The Lido is an unashamedly feel-good read. Inspired by the south London of the author’s student years and a passion for outdoor swimming, it’s a powerful book about loneliness, belonging and the importance of community in an increasingly disconnected world.
‘The book’s themes of community, protest and activism are urgent ones in Brexit Britain.’ – The Guardian Meet Rosemary, 86, and Kate, 26: dreamers, campaigners, outdoor swimmers... Rosemary has lived in Brixton all her life, but everything she knows is changing. Only

Healthwatch Suffolk is your local health and social care champion Our role is to listen to your experiences of NHS and social care services in Suffolk. We work with your local services, and the people who pay for them, to make sure your voice is heard where it matters. If you use GP practices, hospitals, dentists, pharmacies, care homes or other support services in your area, we want to hear from you. We use the things people tell us to better understand the challenges facing the NHS and other care providers, and we make sure your experiences improve health and care for everyone – locally and nationally. We can also help you to get the information and advice you need to access the support you deserve.
couple of email updates each month, and a quarterly newsletter, to make sure people hear about opportunities to shape their local services. That includes the chance to take part in our latest research projects, and to be the first to learn about other opportunities to have a real say in how services are working.
It’s really important that you share your feedback – whether good or bad, happy or sad. If you’ve had a negative experience, it’s easy to think there’s no point in sharing your story, and that ‘nothing ever changes’. Remember, your feedback is helping to improve people’s lives. So, if you need advice, or you’re ready to tell your story – we’re here to listen.
Could you be a Co-production Ambassador? Our co-production team works hard to make sure health organisations are involving local people at every stage of planning or delivering services. And we are always looking for anyone who wants to help us achieve this, in any way they feel they can.
You can find us online at www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk and can also find us out and about in your local community. We regularly visit local GP practices to talk directly with patients, and the thoughts we gather is shared with the practices to help them to improve their services.
We offer payment for any time spent - as well as out-of-pocket expenses and travel costs – and always discuss how Ambassador’s feel they can best benefit from working with us.

Do you know a young person who might like to help develop web content, or join a Board of Directors, and be a voice for youth health issues?
Youthwatch Suffolk – an opportunity for young people in Suffolk For those aged 16 and over, there will be the chance to join our Board of Directors as a non -voting member and will be able to participate in important discussions about our organisation to ensure young people have a say in our work and priorities.
We’re forming a core group of up to twenty young people aged 13 to 25 who can help us to set up Youthwatch Suffolk – a new place for young people to learn more about their health and social care services, have their experiences heard, and to develop new skills.
If you know someone who may be keen to join our group, get in touch by email to info@healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk or call 01449 703 949 for more information.
This team will support us to create an identity for Youthwatch, to begin to encourage other young people to join in, and to develop things like our web content about the project. They will also help us to start thinking about the issues Youthwatch Suffolk should tackle.
We’d love to hear from you.

Have you been cold called about home appliance insurance?
Others just go straight in for the hard sell, often calling dozens of times a day, offering increasingly ‘better’ deals.
Suffolk Trading Standards have seen an increase in reports from residents who have received telephone calls from companies offering to renew the breakdown/repair cover on their white goods and other household appliances.
Most people probably don’t even need appliance breakdown cover, as many common appliance issues are covered by home contents insurance.
These cover plans are in effect contractual agreements to carry out a service, and not insurance policies. The agreements contain generic wording and give little information about what cover would be given should customer ever try to use the agreement.
If you think you’ve been mis-sold a policy, or are having trouble cancelling one, contact Citizens Advice Consumer Service for advice. You should be able to claim your money back under the Direct Debit Guarantee, or under Section 75 if you paid over £100 using a credit card. If you’ve paid out using a debit card, you can ask your bank to refund you through its chargeback procedure. While there are legitimate insurers who will cover household appliances if they breakdown, Trading Standards would urge residents to always do their research, and never agree to any type of cover plan or ‘warranty’ as the result of a cold call. If an extended warranty was purchased with the goods on initial purchase, check the paperwork, and don’t respond to cold callers.
Most commonly, they’ll pretend you already have a policy with them and offer to renew it for a cheaper price. Some people who do have appliance warranties are often caught out by this.
To report scams to Trading Standards or to obtain advice, contact our partners at the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
They’ll then sign you up for pricey monthly direct debits for services that probably don’t even exist. 30

Beware of Bogus Energy Sellers With energy price hikes hitting the news, we are warning households to be alert to bogus energy salespeople. Fraudsters could attempt to cold call households pretending to be well known energy suppliers. The scammers will then attempt to convince consumers to 'switch' supplier and, if they agree, ask for their bank details. Other risks include face-to-face 'salespeople' knocking on doors and

High Hopes Update - our sunflower challenge continues! We’re delighted to have been joined in our sunflower challenge by some green fingered Suffolk residents! Snape inhabitants Jane (a regular visitor to the MeetUpMondays at The Golden Key) and Colin (who recently moved into the village) were given their sunflowers by the lovely Snape Good Neighbours volunteer, Maria, and are now in a friendly competition. It’s looking like a close call at the moment!
Stephen from Chattisham (who you may have seen in our July issue displaying a box of our giveaway Thompson & Morgan sunflower seeds when he collected his packet) now has a whole row of High Hopes on the go! Margaret, also from Chattisham, is growing two in perfect symmetry, and from the looks of how healthy they are, knows a thing or two about how to keep slugs and bugs at bay! 32
