Cross Country

Congratulations to the Cross Country team for their performances at practices and in our three league races this year. Most of the team will attend the Calgary High School Cross Country Championships on October 2 at Canada Olympic Park.

Those who place well will be heading to the Provincial Championships in Eagle Butte on October 15. Good luck, runners!

Tosca Café

On September 29th, 46 Drama students from Grade 8, 10, 11 and 12 attended the live performance of Tosca Café at Theatre Calgary.

The story is based on the real Tosca Café in San Francisco and takes place over the span of 70 years. The cast, including famous ballet dancer, Rex Harrington, danced through the prohibition, Great Depression, World War II, flower child generation and more.

In a critique assignment, Senior High students discussed how powerful movement is over the use of language to tell story and character.

The golfers of Rundle College Junior High travelled to Fox Hollow G.C. on Thursday, September 29, for the ISAA championship.

The scores for all golfers were overinflated as the wind, trains, and traffic were a constant distraction for all.

Senior Girls The Senior Varsity Girls Volleyball team is off to a great start! The girls already played in the University of Alberta tournament, winning the consolation final.

On September 30, the school hosted their annual Cobra Cup. The girls were undefeated going into the final match, claiming the championship title and keeping the Cobra Cup at home. Kayla Barry received the team MVP for the tournament.

Senior High Citizens of the Month Noah Muruve made a strong positive impression on me from the first day I met him at Rundle College. He represents himself well with his excellent manners, immaculate dress, and positive attitude. His leadership in the classroom quickly became apparent. Noah is a self-motivated learner and constantly challenges himself to improve.

Paula Rooney is a very deserving recipient of Citizen of the Month for September. Since the beginning of the school year, she has displayed her maturity as a grade 10 student. Paula is very kind and respectful to teachers and to her peers. She is Currently she is a student coach for the Gr. 7 boys Volleyball team and Paula is always willing to help and volunteer for any school activity. Congratulations!

Cayley Wreggitt is a super student to get things rolling in Grade 11 for the CitMo’s. This highly respected and likeable young lady goes about her business quietly, doing all she does well -with a smile to boot. Her nomination and deserved title comes from putting others before herself.

A true unsung heroine then? Not any more! This is your time to sing “Cayley-Cayley”!

Caitlen Lehrmann The outstanding leadership and excellent attitude consistently displayed by Caitlen Lehrmann is truly laudable. On her own volition, She has aided tremendously in the team development of the junior girls volleyball team.

Caitlen has been unwaveringly positive and upbeat. She is an outstanding citizen of our school community.

Abhi Toor is being recognized this month for his strong start to the school year, including his tremendous work ethic and commitment to extracurricular activities. On the football team he leads by example, playing nearly every down on both the offensive and defensive lines. In his academics Abhi has set high goals for himself and daily strives to reach these goals. His sacrificial efforts are paying off with tremendous academic results in September.

Aelita Rozitis a very deserving recipient of September’s Citizen of the Month award. Aelita’s hard work and enthusiasm this month has contributed to a very strong start to the school year and her actions have definitely generated a vast amount of school spirit. One would not know that Aelita is a new member of the Prefect team as she has demonstrated veteran leadership qualities both on the Prefect team and within school. Congratulations Aelita!

The 6th Rundle Football Season kicked off September 2nd against the Sexsmith Sabres. Rundle played a great game beating the Sabres 14-0.

The following week, Rundle played Bishop Grandin High School to a 6-6 draw. This year has been a special one so far as the football team was privileged to play in front of so many Rundle supporters on September 16th against High River at the field Grand Opening. The atmosphere was electric and the football team would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Rundle community.

Rundle College won that game 35-7.

The football team was handed its first loss on the 23rd against a very good Foothills Falcons team. We have been fortunate this year to play more Calgary high schools like John G. Diefenbaker, Crescent Heights and Henry Wisewood. This year the football team has been led by our veteran grade twelve group of Josh Muruve, Abhi Toor, Evan Beck, and Mike Walls. Good luck to the football team as they continue their season into October with an overall record of 4-1-1 in September.

Jane Moult is a kind, polite and respectful young lady who lives her life displaying such gratitude and appreciation for all that we are so lucky to have. Jane is an outstanding individual and an outstanding student. Her work ethic is praiseworthy. She is one of those individuals not afraid of putting in the time and effort required to be successful.

Drew Dudley, former Director of one of Canada’s largest university leadership development programs and founder of Nuance Leadership spoke to our students on Thursday, September 22. His talk entitled “Redefining Leadership” challenged students to reevaluate their thinking on leadership. A story teller at heart, he used numerous life experiences to illustrate the impact that individuals have to create change and to make and leave a mark on the lives we touch. Thanks to the AISI(Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) grant we are able to bring in speakers to offer a variety of perspectives and to work with our students. Drew followed up his Thursday talk by working with our prefects and peer support members at their annual retreat on Friday, September 23.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is a web based Course Management System that allows the classroom to extend onto the web. Similar to a website, it is a common place for students to go for many classroom’s resources. Additionally, teachers can post news items, post electronic journals and resources etc. It also enables the extension of class discussions and interaction beyond the classroom walls through forums and chat.

All teachers will be required to have their Moodle sites completed by next fall, but many have already gotten a head start. To see what courses are currently available on our Moodle site go to www.rundlehigh.ca. (Students should have already received their username and password from their homeroom teacher or TA). Rundle Athletic Field Grand Opening September 16, 2011 After years of preparation and planning, the Rundle Athletic Field was officially commemorated on Friday, September 16, 2011. This exceptional facility, the first independently owned artificial turf field in the province of Alberta, was the highlight of the celebrations.

We started the day with a visit from 90 of our grades 1-3 primary students who were excited to run around on the field playing numerous games of tag and soccer. Even rolling down the hills and sliding on the turf was part of the morning’s agenda. The PE 10 students had a hard time keeping up with the energy and quick movements of our young athletes. After a much needed snack break, the students were back on the bus heading to the Primary for their special lunch.

On the heels of the Primary school, over 220 students from the Academy and Elementary took to the field for spirited games of soccer, capture the flag and dodgeball. Many talented athletes showed their skills and competitive edge.

Another group of PE10 students took over and soon found the Elementary students to be even faster, stronger and more determined to win the games. The buses rolled in and off went the Elementary students to their campuses.

For the Official Grand Opening ceremony, administration, faculty, staff, Academy Sr. High students and Jr. Sr. High students from the College welcomed our special guests to our celebrations. Honourable Ronald Liepert brought a congratulatory message from the Province and Alderman Richard Pootmans spoke on behalf of the City of Calgary. Dr. Evans and Dave Hauk addressed our community with messages of pride and gratitude.

The celebrations carried on into the evening with a family friendly tailgate party at the Jr. Sr. High school in preparation for the main event; Friday Night Lights at Rundle. Cobra fans lined up to purchase their Spolumbo’s BBQ meal, kindly donated by Spolumbo’s. This generous sponsorship raised over $2600 to support our athletic programs. Fans were treated to a meet and greet with Stampeders, Johnny Forzani and Nik Lewis. Amp Radio stopped by to hand out some give-aways.

Over 600 students, family and friends came out to support the Rundle Cobras as they took on the Highwood High Mustangs. Spurred on by cheers from the crowd, the Cobras went on to take the win with a score of 35-7. Tony Spoletini’s game commentary provided high energy and entertainment throughout the evening and the Academy staff and students put on an exciting half-time show.

Rundle College Society would like to thank all our Rundle families for joining us at our Grand Opening and for sharing in the celebrations. Our students showed a tremendous sense of pride to be part of Rundle and gratitude for the opportunities they have been given. The Rundle Athletic Field is for our students, first and foremost, and we have encouraged our administration to include the use of the field in their physical education curriculum. We look forward to seeing students from each of our campuses benefit from this exceptional playing field.

Rundle College Sponsors Guatemalan Student We would like to introduce our Rundle Community to Roxana Tuiz, the young grade 7 student we sponsored as a result of the grade 12 trip students took to Guatemala during Spring Break 2011.

Students were successful in raising funds for a 5 year scholarship for a student to attend Colegio de Maya in Solala, Guatemala.

Roxana will now have the opportunity to attend secondary school knowing that tuition, supplies, uniforms, and tutors will all be taken care of. We had the opportunity to meet Roxana when we visited her school last year. She regularly sends letter to us and Ms Fitzgibbon’s classes are helping to translate

these letters so we can share them with our student body.

Our students who travel to Guatemala during Spring Break 2012 will also have the opportunity to visit Roxana and her classmates as we work on developing a relationship with Colegio de Maya. Our goal this year will be to raise funds to provide a scholarship for a second student . We hope that we may count on the support of the student body in this endeavor.

Grade 12 Trip to Guatemala Rundle College will once again be travelling with Hearts & Hands on a voluntourism trip to Guatemala during spring Break. This two week trip is open to Grade 12 students interested in spending a week volunteering building

stoves in rural Guatemala followed by one week touring cultural sites. If you missed the information meeting on the 17th, please see Ms. Baird for more information.

Speech and Debate The Speech season kicked off on September 30th, at Forest Lawn with the BP Speech Tournament. Tessa Krause bravely represented the junior high in her first competition.

At the senior level, Rundle brought home three medals: Elizabeth Church with gold in Original Oratory; Erin Anderson and Sam Sirianni with silver in duet acting; and Jaclyn Hiebert with bronze in Original Oratory.

On September 23rd, ten debaters attended a Rookie Workshop at John Diefenbaker.

Students had to learn a new style called Canadian National Style to compete this year at the senior high level. We are looking forward to a great season.

Grade 11 Trip to Peru The Grade 11 trip to Peru is less than half a year away and preparations are well underway. The students have had the first of their monthly meetings to prepare for the trip and, like the mountains of Peru, the learning curve is steep! For example, Cuy is considered a delicacy in Peru. If you ordered Cuy at a restaurant, what would you be eating? Ask a student on the Peru trip for the answer!

The next meeting will take place on October 13 at 4:30 PM with Alex, Maddy, Sam and Kathleen presenting on Peruvian History then Kyle, Lucas, Carter and Melissa presenting on Peruvian Geography.

Guatemala Friday, September 9 was a monumental day for Rundle College and two young Mayan students from Guatemala. We had the good fortune to host Yolanda Yaxon and Angelica Martin, students from Colegio de Maya in Solala, Guatemala, for the morning.

These two students were accompanied by Rebeca

Galindo, Program Director for Hearts & Hands in Guatemala, and Jan Townsend, founder of Hearts & Hands. While the girls had the opportunity to tour both the junior and senior high, and visit PE, Band, Art, Math, & SS classes, the highlight for the morning was certainly the time spent in a Spanish 10 class. Ms Fitzgibbon and her class welcomed the guests by introducing themselves in Spanish. An interactive art assignment allowed Yolanda and Angelica to participate in the class and to informally meet the students. It was an excellent opportunity for our students to practice

their Spanish and to learn a little about Mayan teenagers. The art projects the students worked on that day were then sent to be shared with the students in Solala.

Ms Fitzgibbon and Ms Baird are developing plans to have continued communication and interaction between Rundle and Colegio de Maya in the coming years, as we provide real opportunities for students to practice their Spanish and we maintain contact and support for the students we sponsor in Solala. Who knows, we may actually host a student we sponsor in Guatemala one day.

Babes In Toy land - Jr High Play The cast and crew for the Junior High Drama production have been chosen and students are hard at work preparing for their presentation of Babes in Toyland. A successful drama production requires the timely synthesis of many different elements: acting, makeup, sets, props, music, lights and sound. This production team of over fifty students is dedicated to delivering a wonderful production that will get the audience into the holiday spirit.
