Sr High Drama Production The sold out run of this year’s production of The Three Musketeers took place May 1st to 3rd. The cast and crew of 75 grade 9-12 students were proud of their hard work and the audience appreciated the talented actors, the beautiful costumes and the amazing sword fights. I would like to again thank the parents, Faculty and student body for another successful year and say goodbye to the grade 12’s who have contributed many years to Rundle’s Drama Program. Continuing, students can now look forward to next year’s show. Celebrating the film’s ten year anniversary, popular and filled with relevant messages, I have edited and adapted to the stage Mean Girls. More information will be available in the fall.

SOS SOSSessions Sessions Helping you get ready for exams!

The next THREE SOS sessions with Ms. Woods will focus on helping students prepare for their final exams. These sessions will highlight: getting organized for exams, active study techniques to increase recall and retention, and strategic approaches to writing tests. All junior high students are welcome to attend! WCISVC October 16th-19th, 2013, Rundle College is very proud to host the Western Canadian Independent Schools Volleyball Championships. This is a very prestigious event for the Western Independent Schools Senior Girls volleyball teams, as it has now run for over four decades. Our Senior Girls Volleyball team will be hosting Collingwood School, Crofton House School, St. Michael’s University, and York House School from B.C.; Strathcona Tweedsmuir School from here in Calgary; Athol Murray Collegiate of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan and St. John’s Ravenscourt from Winnipeg, Manitoba. We hope to see many Rundle supporters come out to see a match, as it is sure to be some exciting volleyball!

Grade 8 & 9 Co-Ed Soccer

Intramural Badminton Champions

Congratulations to the team of Gianfranco Sartor and Andy Black who were the doubles and Carina Lai who was the singles Intramural badminton champions. Best of luck to all floor hockey teams competing for the Intramural Floor Hockey Cobra Cup.

Sr High Track & Field Once again the High School Track and Field Team won the CISAA Track and Field banner. This is due to the fact that all the Rundle College athletes competing put forth strong performances.

A special congratulations goes out to Val Turkunova-Raush and Emily Buchanan for winning the Intermediate Boys’ and Senior Girls’ Aggregates respectively.

This year Rundle College sent 23 athletes to compete in the City Championships on May 25. There were many outstanding performances. We have played all league games with the following results: Masters Academy (5-1), WIC (2-2), Calgary Christian (3-3), Calgary Academy (2-2), Webber (3-3) We look forward to playoffs the second week of June. Go, Cobras!

Thank you Jake McKenna and Thomas Kellner, Class of 2012 and current varsity track and field athletes, for all your help in coaching the team. Also thank you to Brad McCauig, former National 100m and 4x100m Canadian team member, for helping our athletes with their starts and relay handoffs.

Day of Silence Day of Silence is a day in which students remain silent in order to bring awareness of the impact of bullying and harassment in schools.

Peer Support would like to thank all students who participated in the event that was held April 19. We had an amazing turnout with over 50 people in both the jr high and sr high participating by being silent for the whole school day!

Taste of Diversity The annual Taste of Diversity took place on Friday, April 26th, and it was a huge success this year! This event is designed in a way to help promote diversity among our staff and students at our school! We would like to thank our amazing volunteers that brought in food samples from around the world! Also, without the staff and students purchasing some of the delicious food samples this event would have never been a success! This year we were able to raise $265! Half of the money will be going towards the foundation “Because I am a Girl” and the other half will be going towards the foundation that puts on the Day of Silence!

Nutrition Sessions A group of students ran sessions for grade 8 students to address healthy nutrition and lifestyle. These sessions took place in PE classes on May 15th. The junior high students were taught through participation and listening about healthy food choices regarding food labeling, healthy beverages, and nutrition facts. The participants were able to practice their food labeling skills, take part in a Jeopardy High School Track & Field game and answer a mini quiz to see how much they knew about healthy eating.Thank you to Lisha Yu, Carina Lai, Erica Kemp, Andrea Sanchez-Ponton, Joanna Yip and Isabella Gut who lead the nutrition sessions.

SMART Grad As spring is here and grad season is upon us, Peer Support has taken on several initiatives to address making good decisions and taking smart risks during grad season. The initiatives are geared towards the Class of 2013 Grads. One initiative called Prom Promise allows Rundle College students in grade 4 to write letters to their grade 12 buddy asking them to make good decisions, particularly around drinking and driving, during their grad season. Also, Alberta Health Services has graciously provided “Think and Drive” packages that aim to educate grads to stop and think about making SMART decisions for themselves and their classmates! Congratulations, Graduates!

Prefects

June ~ 2013

Prefects would like to reflect upon a successful year. As Grade 10 Prefects, we welcomed and facilitated integration of new students into our closeknit student body. We have become close friends with many of the new students, and they now are a part of our close Rundle family. Also, we have played supporting roles this year in a variety of events such as dances, theme days, and assemblies, and look forward to taking on a larger role next year in student governance. We strived to represent the views of the Grade 10 students and voice their views and opinions in Prefect meetings. We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this year as the Prefects sponsored events have set new records in the number of students attending dances and school events. We hope to continue this upward trend into next year.

As well, the Grade 11 Prefects would like to thank the staff, administration and student body for their undeniable support and involvement which resulted in great success for the Prefect organized events. This year’s annual Frosted Formal was even more of a success than previous years with an increased turnout from our peers. In addition, even though we had to make some reluctant but necessary changes to Beach Day, we still attracted a great turnout and received positive feedback from staff and students. As we hang up our burgundy uniforms, we look forward to an even better year as Grade 12 leaders within the Rundle community. Our annual Grade Appreciation days, Dress-Up days and support for other groups and sports teams within the school will continue throughout next year as we plan to bring an increased quality of events to the table. We wish the graduating Grade 12 Prefects the best of luck in all of their future endeavours and thank them for the advice, respect and leadership that they have shown to us in this past year. We have big shoes to fill in the 2013-2014 school year!

As Grade 12 Prefects, we could not have asked for a better Prefect team to work with during our graduating year. All of us were impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity that the new grade 10 and 11 students brought into the group and are excited about “passing the torch” next year. Having been a Prefect for three years, I’ve witnessed a great deal of growth in the group as we have transitioned into a more student-run and independent leadership team. The Prefect group does a lot of background work to put on events that isn’t immediately apparent to the rest of the school but takes a lot of energy and initiative. This year has been a big step forward in creating new events and traditions, especially with our implementation of house teams and a change in the lineup of dances and events. We’re confident that this momentum will continue under the leadership of all of our returning and new Prefects along with the excellent help of Mrs. McClements and Mr. Goettel. Thanks for all of your support!

WEB Leaders On May 10th, twenty-two grade nine Ambassador/WEB leaders headed off to the Delta Lodge in Kananaskis to participate in training in order to prepare for Grade 7 Orientation Day on May 21st. While on the retreat, students developed leadership skills and public speaking skills, while also learning important WEB activities to teach the new grade 7 students.

On Tuesday May 21st, the WEB leaders were ready to take on orienting all the new grade 7 students to junior high. The day began with an assembly the gym. Students then headed out to classrooms whereby they enjoyed activities that allowed them to get to know one another and learn how to work together. The new students also had the opportunity to enjoy their lunch in the Great Hall and play relay game on the new Rundle field. They finished the day off with an activity that got them working together as a group.The main focus of the day was for the new students to learn how to be successful in junior high prior to coming to the school.

By the time they left, the new students felt more comfortable in their new surroundings. Everyone involved had a great day getting to know each other! The WEB Leaders did a fantastic job and they should be very proud of their accomplishments! A special thank you goes out to Ms. Dunsford, Ms. Baird and Mr. Lake for running the WEB program this year!

Senior High Citizens of the Month There are some students whose energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and Carly McQuilkin is one of them. Carly walks into class each day with a positive attitude and is never afraid to ask questions or participate in class discussion. Her enthusiasm also transfers to her involvement in the girl’s rugby team. Carly single-handedly recruited several members of the team and has been a committed and fearless player at every game and practice.

She has been very successful as a member of the Track and Field Team, representing Rundle College at the ASAA Provincial Championships this upcoming weekend in Calgary. She has shown great commitment to improving herself as a High Jumper. Carly exemplifies everything that a Rundle student should be. Congratulations, Carly!

It is always a pleasure to have Jane Moult in the classroom. Her positive outlook radiates to others. Jane goes out of her way to make everyone around her feel special. Consequently, everyone in the school recognizes her genuine kindness and compassion....

Calder Kitagawa is a young man of great tenacity. He constantly and relentlessly engages in the active pursuit of true understanding. His thirst for knowledge is quenched by his remarkable work ethic and sheer determination. His acquisition of knowledge is entirely the product of hard work, dedication to excellence, and perseverance. Even in the midst of deep study, Calder still finds time to provide support and encouragement to his peers. Often seen offering assistance, Calder gives freely of his time and patience. He is a young man with a gentle demeanour; he is always kind and is an outstanding example of a model citizen.

Isabella Gut has transitioned seamlessly into Rundle College this year. In her role in Peer Support, she can always be trusted to be at the meetings, actively participate, volunteer to help and follow through with her commitments. Recently, she took on a leadership role in coordinating nutrition sessions in grade 8 PE classes. She demonstrated integrity, motivation and effective communication skills. Her teachers describe her as friendly, genuine, thoughtful, patient, kind, hardworking and determined. She is conscientious, helps others in the classroom and is willing to take on a challenge. In all, Isabella has positively impacted our school community! Congratulations, Isabella!

Stuart Baker’s enthusiasm and positive attitude will be missed. He is proud to be at Rundle College, and his school spirit shows in the building as well as on the athletic field. He has been an integral part of the track and field program for six years. This year he took his role as a leader on the team seriously, helping out fellow athletes at the meet and during practice. He will leave his mark as younger students and athletes look up to him.

Josh Lewington has been a pillar of our school this year. His dedication to academic excellence has been tremendous and an example for all. In terms of school activities, Josh has been an enthusiastic supporter and participant who boosts school spirit with his positive, fun-loving attitude. This semester he has been an integral part of the rugby team with a fierce competitive spirit and the battle scars to show for it. He is steadfast, reliable, kind, and thoughtful; in other words, a true Rundle citizen.

Jr High Track and Field The junior high track and field season was once again very successful as we had 14 athletes qualify for the South Central Zone track and field meet. These athletes represented our school very well and came away with some outstanding results, which are listed below. Congratulations to these athlete’s as this was an extremely competitive meet and they should be very proud of their results. Thank you to all the parents and coaches for their help and support in another exceptional season.

Junior High Citizens of the Month

Davis Carlson loves being a Rundle College student. It is apparent in the way he dresses every day and the way he conducts himself in class and any extra-curricular activity with which he is involved. He is conscientious, always striving to do his best, and has a talent for technology that amazes his teachers! Davis created an app this year that is available on the App Store quite an impressive accomplishment for a grade 7 student! He is a staple at every assembly, making sure any technology that is needed runs smoothly, and his work on the sound crew of the junior high production of “Anne Frank & Me” went above and beyond the expectations set out for him! Congratulations, Davis, on being May’s citizen of the month. It is well-deserved!

Sarah Seaver is a quiet, unassuming student amongst the halls of the Junior High. She is deserving of this recognition for her inclusiveness, her courtesy extended towards all she is around, and for her hard work and dedication as a student. Recently in Language Arts, Sarah proved that she possesses great leadership skills, guiding her group in a large assignment. Many group members praised her work and accountability throughout the task. Sarah’s kind demeanor has earned her the respect of all her peers and teachers.

Stephanie DeAvila radiates enthusiasm for everything she’s involved in at Rundle, from her passion for books to her confidence on the stage. She has a vivacious personality balanced with a gentle and empathetic spirit which allows her to adapt to any situation. On a typical day, Stephanie can be found with her nose in a book, cracking a perfectly-timed joke with her friends, keeping bibliophiles on track with their next project, or transforming herself into a most-believable character in the junior high production of “Anne Frank & Me”. We anxiously anticipate Stephanie’s continued spirit for all things Rundle...and more!

Congratulations to Tara Moore, May citizen of the month. Tara has been incredibly dedicated to the Track & Field team this past month. She rarely missed a practice and had some excellent results at the CISAA track meet as well as at the Zone track meet. In addition to Tara’s extracurricular involvement, she is a high achieving student who is well respected by her peers. She puts forth a strong effort on all assignments and takes pride in her work. She is inclusive, sincere and kind hearted. Tara is an excellent example of what it means to be a Rundle College citizen.

Idaresit Thompson is an exemplary Rundle citizen. Her caring nature is demonstrated in her daily interactions, as she treats both peers and teachers with respect and kindness. An extremely hard worker, Idaresit is a bright, inquisitive student who truly loves learning about her world. From volunteering to teach younger children how to read in her community, to contributing her insights as a WEB leader, her genuine, giving personality shines. Her smile and contagious laughter light up the whole room.

Congratulations to Idaresit on this well deserved acknowledgment of her citizenship qualities!

Congratulations to McKenna White, a very well deserved selection for the Citizen of the Month. McKenna is a well rounded individual who is an active participant in the classroom (she is an extremely strong student), the fine arts department (she has amazed the school with her piano solo during an assembly and will also be performing at the grade nine graduation ceremonies) and on the playing fields (where she excelled in cross country and track and field). Her most brilliant attribute is her shining personality- she always has a positive attitude and a determination to excel at every task that is placed in front of her.

PAC News 2013

A HUGE THANK YOU to all the parents who brought in delicious food for the Teacher Appreciation Lunch in May. It is one of the teacher’s favourite events and is really fun to host. We received several thank you notes from the teachers and they are posted on the PAC board at the front entrance.
