The Biology 30 Honours students were invited to visit the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute by Rundle College alumnus, Dr. Aaron Goodarzi (’95). Dr. Goodarzi and his colleagues specialize in the area of DNA damage and repair. The students were introduced to the world of medical research, including laboratory techniques, current investigations and specialized (and extremely expensive) equipment. The passion that drives the researchers to continue to seek answers to the mysteries of cells and molecular biology was inspiring.

The Biology 30 Honours students engaged in their own molecular biology experiments back in the classroom. Using typical research biology processes, they successfully inserted the bioluminescent gene from a jellyfish into bacteria, causing the bacteria to glow. They then successfully isolated the glow-protein from the other parts of the bacteria. In addition to their final preparations for the Biology 30 Diploma Exam, the Biology 30 Honours students will be examining the findings of the Human Genographic Project. Through this project, the DNA of over 100 000 individuals has been analyzed to trace global ancestry.

Rundle Pinnacle Grade 11 Open The first annual Rundle Pinnacle Open was hosted on May 30 at Elbow Springs Golf Club. The fun tournament saw teams comprised of three Grade 11 students and one teacher compete against one another. In the end, the team of Lucas Wasyliw, Evan Biberdorf, Matt Krol and Mr. Hauk won the tournament.

Other tournament highlights saw Kelsey Cook win long drive for the girls and Keenan McVeigh for the boys. Low score winners were Melissa Guenette, Matt Krol and Mr. Hardie.

Rundle College Annual Sponsorship of the Feed the Hungry Dinner Once again, Rundle College has sponsored a Feed the Hungry dinner for our city’s less fortunate residents. On a beautiful May 6th day, our families worked from 9:30 am until 6:30 pm to chop, mix, cook, set, dish, serve and clean up so that 700 people could enjoy a wonderful Sunday dinner. It was hard work and every single individual did a tremendous job. It is always so nice to see parents and children volunteering together in this venue.

best camps in Canada. One last congratulations, goes out to Owen Vouri who took home the bronze medal at the Cadet Provincial Age Category Championships in Ponoka.

Elbow River Trip In conjunction with their Environmental Chemistry study in Science, all of our grade 9s embarked on a field trip to look at water quality in the Elbow River, from the headwaters in Kananaskis, down through to Twin Bridges in Calgary. Through hands on testing and analysis, students were able to determine when water quality dropped, and then infer the reasons based on the land use upstream and in the area of the test. We made an interesting stop at McLean Creek where students discovered that the total suspended solids measurement was abysmal because of the mud bogging currently going on in the area. This tied in nicely to the grade 7 project and we were able to share the findings of the grade 9 students with them. We thank the parent volunteers who went along with us for the day.

WEB – Where Everybody Belongs

Senior High Citizens of the Month Catherine Fuller is a very deserving recipient of Citizen of the Month.

Since the beginning of the school year, she has displayed her maturity as a grade 10 Student. Catherine is very kind and respectful to teachers and to her peers. Catherine displays great character and integrity in all that she does. She recently displayed this by performing her Physical Education Dance Project in front of the entire school at the May Assembly.

Catherine is very active in the school as well, demonstrating this with her beautiful costume at the recent Taste of Diversity.

Congratulations Catherine; very well deserved.

Val Turkunova-Rausch has worked very hard this year and is very deserving of a Student of the Month recognition. Val is very active in the school, participating in many extracurricular sports, most recently, Rugby, Soccer and Track and Field. In addition, Val contributes to the success of both our Rundle College Athletic Department and the Calgary Independent Schools Athletic Association by being a referee for basketball and soccer. Val has represented Rundle College in a very positive way through his involvement in these activities.

Devon Keys is a most deserving citizen. She has been a star athlete throughout the year playing senior varsity volleyball and basketball and finishing the year with track and field. In the classroom, Devon’s work ethic and dedication to achievement is second to none which are made all the more remarkable by how effortlessly she balances all of her commitments.

Erin Anderson’s commitment to school events and activities make her a very deserving recipient of June’s Citizen of the Month Award.

As a Prefect, Erin has been very actively involved in many events throughout the school year. She is a humble, quiet leader in the school, diligently completing many tasks behind the scenes, all the while excelling in her studies.

Most recently, she helped plan Rundle’s inaugural Grade 11 Golf Tournament at Elbow Springs. Erin is an incredibly reliable student and is eager to get involved and lend a helping hand wherever she can.

Hannah Magus: To know what it means to be an impactful student in grade 10, just watch Hannah. You’ll see her working her best in her classes, and getting great results in her academically challenging schedule. You’ll see her stepping up as a Grade 10 Prefect and working to keep Rundle a fun place to be.

You’ll see her balancing extra-curricular activities that showcase her contributions in athletic, dramatic and musical pursuits. And you’ll see a mature and genuine person that other respect and admire.

Thomas Kellner: How does Thomas Kellner shine? In class, academic rigour defined. At the race, zips across the finish line. On stage, with performances sublime. As a Prefect, grace and leadership entwined. As a person, a true gentleman refined. Work ethic, like a pack horse and bull combined. His future? He’ll do just fine; success is in his genetic design.

Ayleigh Henderson is the type of student who always stands out in a crowd. She has been a strong leader on the Prefect team helping to make this school year a success.

In the classroom she is an exemplary student who sets the tone for the class in terms of participation and achievement. On the Guatemala trip, she demonstrated strength of character and compassion, again serving as a leader when hard work needed to be done and difficulties arose. Ayleigh is a true Rundle citizen though and through.

Jenna Westaway is a very deserving recipient of Citizen of the Month. As Head Girl, she has gained the respect of her classmates and faculty. She is a genuine person, and many students in grades 10-12 appreciate her friendliness and warmth that she has exhibited to everyone. During the year, Jenna has been working behind the scenes to make sure that many popular Prefect events such as Beach Day and the Frosted Formal were a success. As well, she has been showing her support for her fellow Rundle teammates by encouraging her classmates to come to home games for the Football and Rugby teams. This spring, Jenna has represented Rundle in multiple track and field meets in the US. At provincial championships, she finished her high school track and field career as the 3 time 800m champion breaking a 35 year old record. Overall, Jenna has been such a positive student, athlete, and Prefect member who has made a positive difference in school life this year.

Medardo Villatoro Perez has strength of character, is polite, respectful, committed and hard-working individual.

He is, to quote Ms. Fitzgibbon, “a linguistic all star - - trilingual!” whose sense of humor, maturity and respectful nature is appreciated by students and staff alike. As a participant in Spanish Club, and member of the football, rugby and track and field teams his dedication, determination, leadership and spirit are exceptional. He is kind hearted and compassionate, but at the same time competitive and fierce; a unique and powerful combination that will bring him many more successes in sport, life, career and relationships.

Congratulations, Medardo!

On May 11th, twenty grade nine WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders headed off to the Delta Lodge in Kananaskis to participate in training to prepare for Grade 7 Orientation Day. While on the retreat students learned all of the activities that they would be teaching the future grade 7 students at the Orientation Day. It was an opportunity for them to develop leadership and public speaking skills, while having fun with their peers. On Tuesday May 22nd, the WEB leaders were ready to take on orienting the new students to junior high. The day began with an assembly in the gym. Students then headed out to classrooms where they enjoyed activities that allowed them to get to know one another and learn how to work together. The main focus was for new students to learn how to be successful in junior high prior to coming to the school. The new students also had the opportunity to enjoy their lunch in the Great Hall and play relay games on the new Rundle field. They finished the day off with an activity that got them working together as a group.

Upon arriving to the17th Avenue campus, the new grade 7 students may have been nervous and scared, however, by the time they left, they felt more comfortable in their new surroundings. Everyone involved had a great day getting to know each other and starting the 2012-2013 school year off with a bang! A special thank you goes out to Ms. Dunsford, Ms. Baird and Mr. Lake for running the WEB program again this year!

Junior High Citizens of the Month Alyssa Berry is a positive leader in all of her classes and works diligently to maintain her high academic average.

She competed in cross country and has played on the volleyball, basketball, and badminton teams throughout the year. Alyssa has earned the respect of her peers and teachers alike, with her exemplary citizenship.

Dylan Kuruliak is a wonderful role model for other students. He exhibits a strong work ethic and a joy of learning above all else. He doesn’t take himself too seriously; always able to laugh at his mistakes. He gets along well with his classmates and is always willing to lend a hand to others. Congratulations, Dylan.

Nathan Smith is an outstanding student, athlete and friend. He is very well-rounded and excels in all subject areas, and puts forth his best effort all the time. He manages to balance his school work with a very busy athletic schedule, and has been a valuable member of four teams: volleyball, basketball, badminton and track. A very kind individual, Nathan is very aware of those around him and is always there with a helping hand or advice when needed. He has been a valuable contributor to many aspects of our Rundle culture.

Elise Buck is a well-rounded, positive student at Rundle College. She works hard in the classroom to attain her best academically. Elise is heavily involved through the school’s athletics as she was the captain of the volleyball team, and a valuable member of the basketball and soccer teams. Elise also represented Rundle College as a member of the track and field team at zones, not only doing well in her event but also displaying sportsmanship. Congratulations, Elise on your achievements and contributions.

Sadie Tims: If anyone were able to sing their way through junior high school, it would definitely be Sadie.

She has an infectious personality that bubbles with enthusiasm and a sheer joy for life-YOLO! She is a source of constant laughs, and obviously knows where to draw the line as to not offend anyone. Sadie is a caring individual who is able to assist her peers and teachers, as she was always available to stay late after assemblies to ensure that the chairs were put away.

Chloe Shea is an extraordinary human being. Her strength of character is admirable. When asked to describe Chloe, her peers were quick to note her sense of humor, ability to laugh and make other’s laugh, and her overall positive energy.

Chloe has incredible compassion.

Teachers have witnessed first hand her courage and integrity when she went out of her way to support a other student, instead of following the crowd and succumbing to peer pressure. Chloe is a role model of character, walking a path of integrity and leading others along with her.

The floor hockey intramurals were filled with some very close and well played games. When it came down to the final, the Teacher’s and Moves Like Jagr squared off in the oval circle for an very entertaining and hard fought battle. Though the teachers used every trick in their book, the youthful and talented students prevailed 5-4 to win the Rundle Cup. Thank you to all who came out and played and congratulations to the following team members of Moves Like Jaggar: Ajap Boparai, Keenan McVeigh, Joel Lindsay, Carter Forman, Davy Braakman and Taylor Caldwell. Have a great summer, until flag football in the fall.

Grade 10 Volunteer Day

Australian Exchange

On Thursday, April 26, the entire grade 10 class had the opportunity to volunteer at several locations around Calgary. As part of our AISI project, we are committed to providing opportunities for our students to give back to the community. We had a very large group spend the afternoon at the Calgary Drop-In Centre Warehouse. In fact, Rundle students were the first ever school group to volunteer at the facility. The two supervisors were so grateful for the assistance they received and couldn’t believe what the students had accomplished. Two smaller groups of students went off to volunteer at the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope and the Community Support Services in Forest Lawn. We were again welcomed at the Food Bank where we have been recognized for our service in the last three years. And finally we had a group who participated in the Spread the Love Project. This group made over 300 sandwiches which were donated to the Mustard Seed. A huge thank you goes out to the students & staff who were excellent ambassadors for Rundle.

Leaving Australia was extremely difficult for both of us as we had become so close with both of our exchange families and new friends. The students and teachers at school were very friendly and welcomed us into the learning environment with open arms. We were able to sit in on a variety of classes during our four weeks at school and experience the difference between Rundle College and Caloundra City Private School classes.

Along with a unique school experience, we were given the opportunity to visit a variety of amazing places which exemplified Australia’s distinctive culture: Sydney, Brisbane, The Great Barrier Reef, local Caloundra Beaches, the Australia Zoo, and the Glass House Mountains. Emily also had the opportunity to participate in the year 10 and 11 camp which was a very eye opening and different experience. Looking back on our experience, we both realize what great memories we were able to create in the 6 short weeks we were in Australia.

We are extremely grateful to Ms. Baird for organizing the exchange and all our teachers for being so supportive of the program. We would also like to thank the Hill and MorleyDrabble families for making this exchange an exceptional and memorable learning experience. As we sit here craving Tim Tam’s and some sun, we hope to go back soon to enjoy the beautiful warm weather and visit all our new friends! Good luck to TJ. Buckley and Megan Mackie who will be experiencing this life changing program this fall.

Senior High Production 2012: The Sting Over 625 audience members came out to see this year’s Senior Production of The Sting, which ran from May 2nd until May 4th. The successful run of the show, with over 80 students from grades 9-12, was a crowd pleaser. From the costumes, set, music and acting the students did an amazing and professional production.

Information regarding next year’s sweeping, swashbuckler of The Three Musketeers will soon be available.

AFRICA 2013

Next year the Travel Club will be going to Kenya and Tanzania. Similar to the trip in 2010, students will be working at an orphanage run by Mully Children’s Family (www.mcfcf.org) in Ndalani, Kenya. After project work at the orphanage, students will travel to Tanzania for a 3-night safari in various locations: Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In September, students will begin to plan their fundraising efforts to support the project work at the orphanage.

The initial trip meeting was held on May 30th. Student applications and deposits were due June 11, 2012.

Mclean Creek Environmental Service Learning Project Our grade 7 students have been involved in a year-long environmental service learning project. These projects integrate curriculum and service to the community. This promotes both good citizenship, and an awareness about real world applications for what is being learned in the classroom. Our project was to raise awareness of the environmental damage to the Elbow River watershed as a result of the Off-Road Recreation Area at McLean Creek, a tributary of the Elbow. We worked to find ways to raise awareness through a variety of projects, and for a number of different audiences, including young people, off-road drivers, and decision makers. Projects included a riparian zone art project, a letter writing and poster campaign, a 3-D watershed model, an artificial wetland experiment, a comic book, and setting up a geocache challenge in the McLean Creek area. Students presented their projects to the public on June 12th out at Ralph Klein Park. They will also be presenting their findings and recommendations to the Bow River Basin Council membership later in June. We want to congratulate our students on their commitment to helping the environment, their creativity, and their willingness to persevere through a project that often took unexpected twists and turns. We learned that all of these things are essential when trying to advocate for environmental change.

The Rundle College track and field team ounce again had an excellent showing at the CISAA track and field meet on Thursday May 24th. Even with the cold rainy conditions eighteen of our athlete’s along with two relay teams qualified for South Central Zones. The South Central Zone track meet was held at Glenmore track on Wednesday June 6th. The athlete’s also competed very well at zones with many second and third place finishes. Congratulations to the track and field team for another great season!

Senior High Track & Field Congratulations to the Sr High Track and Field Team who won the ISAA Banner for the 20th year in a row. This is due to the fact that all the Rundle College athletes competing put forth strong performances.

This year Rundle College sent 25 athletes to compete in the City Championships on May 26.

There were many outstanding performances and many personal bests. A special congratulation goes out to the following students who had top 3 performances: Jenna Westaway – 1st 800m & 1st 1500m Sr Girls Jake McKenna – 1st High Jump Sr Boys Noah Muruve – 2nd 200m, 3rd 100m Jr Boys Thomas Kellner – 3rd 400m Int Boys Josh Fehr-Twaddle – 3rd Long Jump Jr Boys Jacob Ruissen – 3rd 400m Jr Boys Jenna, Jake and Noah all qualified to compete in provincials, which were in Edmonton June 1-2.

All three athletes had outstanding performances. Jenna Westaway broke a 35-year-old high school 800m record to win. She also had the opportunity to run in the Calgary Zone 4x400m team, which won gold, and she came second in the 1500m. Noah Muruve ran a personal best and came 4th in the 200m. Jake McKenna had a great morning of jumping and came 6th in the high hump.

Scottish Exchange

Congratulations!

On March 2nd , 2012, two grade 11 students, Caitlen Lehrmann and Cayley Wreggitt, from Rundle College went on an experience of a lifetime to immerse themselves in the unique culture of the Scottish highlands. They had the opportunity to participate in an exchange with Lathallan School near Aberdeen. There was the opportunity to meet new people and explore the Scottish culture and they also had the pleasure of visiting London and experiencing many places in the UK. Many new sports were tried as well as some traditional Scottish dancing. A highlight was the Ceilidh, a traditional Scottish dance, that was held in their honour. They spent 3 weeks at the school, experiencing Scottish classes and social life. Caitlen and Cayley also did weekly and flexible boarding throughout their stay at Lathallan. It was a trip of a lifetime and they are both so thankful they were given this opportunity.

Congratulations to Erin Anderson who was selected to be a part of the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program (HYRS). Erin will be spending six weeks of her summer at the University of Calgary working with Dr. Patrick Whelan, Ph.D. at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Through this experience, Erin will be exposed to cutting-edge spinal cord medical research. We look forward to hearing about her experience in the fall.

Robin Jeong has the opportunity to visit the research lab of Dr. Simon Park this summer.

Through this experience, Robin will be immersed into the world of Dr. Park’s Micro Engineering Dynamics Automation Lab, where creative minds investigate concepts surrounding such concepts as plastic manufacturing and nano machining.
