FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Members of the Rumsey Family, Thank you all for rallying around the 20182019 theme, Stand up Together. We are so fortunate to have such a generous and devoted community. Your philanthropic support this year helped us surpass our financial goals and achieve record breaking numbers. Our success is a result of the committed, dedicated,and passionate people within our School Family.

Our Board of Trustees, current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, student body, and friends, all contributed significantly to a tremendous year of giving. I am grateful and humbled by the support our Rumsey family demonstrated during the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

While we had a financially successful year, generosity should not solely be measured by monetary gifts. Recognizing that our constituents’ time, talent, and resources impact various aspects of the School community each and every day, we value all contributions that help Rumsey advance the Mission of our School.

Your support allows Rumsey to have an even stronger foundation for our students, our programs, and our faculty and staff. As we are in the beginning stages of creating a Strategic Plan, our community’s support this past year provides a promising future as we look for opportunities to enhance our academic, athletic, and residential life programs.

from the board chair As we are about to begin Rumsey Hall’s 120th year, as not only an institution of learning, but as an important part of the fabric and history of the town of Washington; I am delighted to share with you Rumsey Hall’s 2018-2019 Report on Annual Giving. Let me begin by saying that on behalf of the Rumsey Hall School Board of Trustees, I want to convey our deep appreciation for your continued commitment to, and support of, our School.

This past year, Rumsey’s Annual Fund not only met, but surpassed our anticipated dollar goal. These outstanding results reflect the generous giving of our Schools’ family-parents alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends. This continued full support of the School is crucial to Rumsey’s financial health and success. I am proud to say that this past year, our community contributed almost $1.5 million in Annual Fund gifts.

I would also like to note that the Rumsey Hall School Board takes considerable pride in the significant rise in both the number of gifts, and in the increase in giving percentages amongst all our constituents. Thank you all.

Headmaster Matt Hoeniger ’81, our dedicated leader, continues to work to ensure that our number one priority is, and always will be, our students. At the same time, he is steadfastly promoting a learning environment that emphasizes the importance of honesty, kindness, and respect. We are so fortunate to have Matt’s leadership and guidance steering us into the next chapter of Rumsey’s history.

As an alumnus, graduate of 1964, and as a 30-year member of the Rumsey Hall School Board, I consider it an honor and privilege to serve my beloved alma mater.

As I began my position here, and as the fiscal year 2018-19 came to a close, we looked back on a year marked by impressive achievements in continuing to maintain a strong foundation for an enduring and financially sustainable Rumsey Hall School. Hundreds of supporters generously gave to help maintain the finest programs and quality of life on our beautiful campus.

Dear Rumsey Hall Community, On behalf of the Advancement team, please accept my sincere gratitude for your support and participation in the 2018-2019 Annual Fund. We had a record-breaking fundraising year! The most important measure of our success last year was the significant increase in the number of gifts we received. More than 500 members of our community made Rumsey a philanthropic priority and, together, we raised almost $1.5 million.

On a more personal note, my journey back home to Rumsey has been incredibly memorable and fulfilling.

When I think back to my graduation day in 1994, I knew then that Rumsey would forever remain a priority in my life.

However, I never imagined that decades later, I would have the opportunity to be back on this campus working as part of the Rumsey family.

Rumsey remains a special place to this day, a place that prioritizes our students, our families and our community above all else. We challenged the Rumsey family to Stand Up Together in support of our financial needs, and we are so grateful that you answered our call in such a meaningful and impactful way.

Albert Einstein once was quoted as saying “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts.” There are however some important indicators of our financial health that certainly count and that we have counted. Thanks to the continued support of donors, Annual Giving and Capital Gifts totaled over $1.6 million and the value of our Endowment increased to over $19 million. The funds raised have allowed the school to provide many capital improvements and technological innovations over the past few years resulting in improved safety and stronger programs.

Congratulations to the Rumsey community for their continued commitment to keep the School moving forward.

I am gratefulfor the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and dedicated group of Trustees, faculty and staff who continually work to improve the School’s programs and fiscal health, with their eyes on the future.

Rumsey Hall bids farewell to Trustee Gretchen Farmer P’99, ’02 – after completing 19 years of service and support to our School and Board. Gretchen has served in numerous roles over the years and most recently sat on the Audit, Investment, and Advancement Committees. Gretchen’s love for tennis inspired a generous donation to the construction/revitalization of the outdoor tennis courts, and in 2002 The Farmer Family Outdoor Tennis Courts were dedicated. “When we think of Rumsey, we always smile!”

To kick off Rumsey Hall’s final Annual Fund push for the 2018-19 fiscal year, the Advancement Team conducted a Giving Day on May 29, 2019. We announced the campaign on May 22nd via email and social media and encouraged our constituents to make an Annual Fund gift in advance of the 29th. We focused on increasing Annual Fund participation rather than on targeting a specific number of dollars. After analyzing available data regarding Annual Fund giving for the previous fiscal year, we set our Giving Day goal at 40 gifts.

The Giving Day campaign officially launched at 7 AM on May 29th and ran until midnight. Throughout the campaign, our messaging emphasized the theme for the 2018-19 academic year, Stand Up Together, and the response to Giving Day was overwhelming. Upon making her gift to the Annual Fund on behalf of the Adams Family, Kendall Adams P’11, P’14 wrote “When we think of Rumsey, we always smile!” To keep the Rumsey community engaged, we shared up-to-the-minute updates regarding our progress toward our goal on social media, including fun photos of students and faculty. When we met our goal of 40 gifts, we shared a video of Headmaster Matt Hoeniger ’81 ringing Rumsey’s victory bell and announced a stretch goal of an additional 25 gifts by midnight. Our constituents heard our call and stepped up without hesitation, and we more than doubled our stretch goal.

It is clear the sentiment shared by Kendall Adams holds true for so many others in the Rumsey community. Alumni responded especially well to our Giving Day challenge and contributed 32 gifts. Thanks to the generosity of our constituents, we received 92 gifts and raised a total of $37,000 for the 2018-19 Annual Fund.

Fall Parents’ Weekend Brings the Community Together The 34th Annual Rumsey Hall Benefit was held on Friday, October 12, 2018 in Farmen Hall. The room was transformed into an intimate fall-themed space. The success of the event is a tribute to the tireless work and creativity of Rumsey Circle Parents Association volunteers, faculty and staff. Rumsey Trustee Monica Vogelstein P’14, ’19 served as Benefit Chair. Trustees, alumni, current and past parents, grandparents, and faculty lifted paddles and spirits high. Headmaster Matthew Hoeniger ’81 presented the Live Auction items with enthusiasm and there was an abundance of Silent Auction items displayed under the tent.
