THE LEADERSHIP BATON

At Rumsey Hall, the passing of the red and white ribbon baton symbolically ensures the School’s leadership. Trust is placed in those elected to receive the highly regarded baton to create the right tenor and direction for the leaders of the School, the Senior Class. This tradition, started by Headmaster John F. Schereschewsky Sr., dates to the early 1960s.

Each Spring, Senior Committee members convene to determine those VIth Form students who best embody leadership qualities. This year, the committee endorsed eleven students from the rising Senior Class at the Baton Ceremony held in the Maxwell A. Sarofim ’05 Performing Arts Center.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS

CHARLES PORTER ’94

Message to the Seniors, Excerpt from his Remarks When you face death you become totally exposed. There is nothing to hide behind except for your character. “Rumsey Hall chose you as much as you chose Rumsey. When you interviewed here and went through the application process the School looked not just for grades, they looked for something special, so special it cannot be seen. It’s felt. Rumsey brings in people who they feel will make the world a better place. Do not put limitations on yourself. Be curious. Never quit. The true measure of a man or woman is their character when faced with challenges. If you hold within the values of Honesty, Kindness and Respect you’ll have great character. I said earlier that my best work came during my battle with cancer. It’s because when you face death you become totally exposed. There is nothing to hide behind except for your character. I had so many supporters in my journey through athletics, entertainment and now disease because I’ve always tried to be honest, kind and respectful. You too have been inspired with this spirit and Rumsey Hall is expert at cultivating it. I am Rumsey. We are Rumsey. Believe in Yourself.”

INES BU ’15

Class Speaker, Excerpt from her Remarks We Don’t Quit “As a child, one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment is felt during that one second we manage to stay on a bike without training wheels. You feel proud, overjoyed, thrilled as if you are the queen, the wind blowing your hair back in slow motion just as you see in movies. That is what we feel here. When you fall off, you just have to get back on and try again until you finally get it. There are two types of people; those who smile and get back up to go for it once more, and those who throw their bikes to the side. If you’re truly one of us, you get back on your bike as if nothing happened. We don’t quit. We only try harder and we only get better. Soon we are off to start new adventures at new schools. We will be riding bigger, faster bikes on steeper hills and longer roads. We leave our tricycles and training wheels behind. But every time we find a new road, we will never forget where it was and who taught us how to sit up tall on the seat. On behalf of my classmates: Thank you parents, teachers and friends for all of your sacrifice and encouragement. Congratulations to the Class of 2015. Good luck, never forget there are lots of people supporting you and always remember – believe in yourself and don’t give up.”

HEADMASTER TOM FARMEN

Excerpt from his Remarks to the Graduates The aim is to get better at life, isn’t it?

“One of the dangerous things about decision making is that we all go on autopilot sometimes, assuming that we will naturally use good judgment. I mean, none of us wake up in the morning and say, “I wonder what bad choices I’ll make today.” We’re usually cruising on autopilot. Avoid going on autopilot, especially with decisions or choices dealing with relationships. Be especially conscious and thoughtful of your relationship decisions. Life isn’t always defined by your ability to make good decisions. More often it’s defined by how you handle the consequences of bad decisions, by what you learn. It can be painful, but each time you realize you’ve made a poor decision be sure to process what you’ve learned. Thoughtfully process the experience and acknowledge the wisdom you are gaining. Store it away for next time. If you do, you’ll get better at life. And that’s the aim, isn’t it?” 6

Letters The Passing of the Baton

A Celebrated Rumsey Tradition, by Board Chair Jon D. Neuhaus ’87

Each May, the Senior Committee passes on the ‘Baton of Leadership’ to VIth Form Students. In June, graduates enter the ranks of our celebrated Alumni. Recently a new Senior Class returned to the Rumsey campus to lead a vibrant student body. A dedicated Faculty, Staff and Administration who have co-developed and passed on Rumsey’s traditions, will contribute to the experience of returning and new students and families. This year brings a unique ‘passing of the baton.’ After 31 years leading the School, Tom and Ashley will soon pass the baton of leadership to a new Head of School. The Board shares your desire to celebrate Tom and Ashley’s indelible accomplishments at Rumsey. At the same time, we are committed to choosing the next Head of School thoughtfully and expeditiously, for a smooth and successful transition. Everett Smith P ’04, ’05 successfully served as Board Chair for four years. During his tenure the School continued its advancement in the midst of challenging global financial conditions. His inclusive leadership style reflects Rumsey values and encourages active Board participation for the betterment of Rumsey. As I succeed Everett, it is comforting to know he remains on the Board to assist with the transition. Serving as the Board Chair is a humbling and exciting enterprise. Being the first Alumnus of Rumsey to hold this responsibility is quite an honor. Friends and colleagues in California ask me, “How can you make this commitment that requires frequent cross-country trips?” After sharing Rumsey stories that emanate from the School’s values and my cherished memories, they understand. The positive impact Rumsey continues to have on my life is readily apparent. My brother and sister graduated from Rumsey, my father served at the School and other family members were happily involved. Returning to Rumsey, to my hometown of Washington, was a baton pass I could not pass-up. I benefitted from the generosity of others while attending Rumsey and it’s important to pass that on. Rumsey is in a unique and fortunate position. Our community has developed a culture and experience second to none. The broad-based, loyal support from the Rumsey Family has allowed the School to make unprecedented capital improvements and strengthen its financial foundation. Last year Rumsey graduated the largest Senior Class in its history. This year a new group of student leaders step to the fore, eager to inherit the mantle of leadership and define their own path. Our low attrition among students, teachers and administrators is envied by peer institutions and secondary schools, alike. This also strengthens the School culture as we welcome a full enrollment of new families to Rumsey. Thank you for your continued dedication to Rumsey. Please know that with all of the exciting improvements we make, our values will remain front and center. Our shared commitment to the core values of Honesty, Kindness and Respect and the traditions of Effort, Family and Community ensures that as the baton passes from one Head of School to another, from one Senior Class to the next and from the extended School Family to Rumsey’s new families, we will remain true to our core mission.

Transition

The Board Will Get this Right, by Headmaster Tom Farmen There are countless ways to measure the strength of a school. The two most important statistics, from my perspective, are attrition and yield. We live in a data driven world, and the craftiest analysts can make numbers reinforce any message. Retention and yield tell us two things: do we meet or exceed expectations and does our mission and program attract appropriate families and students? This past year our retention, the re-enrollment of eligible students, was exemplary at 93%. The yield of accepted students was 74%. Why such impressive numbers in these categories? School culture. School culture is a simple concept to understand, but a complicated thing to implement and sustain. A school’s culture is established over years, compounded and magnified by faculty, staff, students and families who believe in and carry out the School’s mission with passion. At Rumsey, we believe this is the best place for students to spend their formative years. Consider this: our teachers average 15 years at Rumsey Hall and administrators average 25 years at the School. That high level of ownership separates Rumsey Hall from peer institutions and strengthens connections with Alumni. This stability also ensures smooth transitions, whether it’s the replacement of a popular young faculty member heading off to graduate school or the election of a new Board of Trustees Chairperson. A strong culture makes decision making clearer and easier. Successions in a school with a distinct culture make sense and are appropriately seamless. Thirty-two years ago Lou Magnoli lovingly handed me the keys to the Rumsey engine. Lou’s hands came off the wheel and mine went on. There was little fanfare or disruption. Rumsey remained Rumsey. It was a smooth transition. We are currently in the early stages of another transition of leadership. This forward looking exercise will bring out the very best in our School while providing fresh perspectives for new opportunities. The process is exciting, and at the same time reassuring. We have a strong Board of Trustees made up of Alumni, Current Parents and Past Rumsey Parents. They will get this right and Rumsey’s advancement will continue as its roots grow deeper. Usually I end the Annual Report letter by saying, ‘I look forward to sharing more good news in the future.’ Next year that joy and privilege will pass to a new Head of School. At the beginning of our final year, Ashley and I thank you for the many ways you have helped Rumsey during our time as caretakers of the School. Yours for Rumsey,

The Rumsey Family Continues to Thrive

Senior Class Moves Forward

Families visiting Rumsey’s beautiful campus experience our dynamic School culture and see firsthand the passion, dedication and longevity of our Faculty. These key factors resulted in a sustained enrollment of over 333 students at the opening of school. Success in our Admission Office is the result of a collective effort by Students, Faculty and Staff, Current and Past Parents, Alumni, educational consultants and Friends of the Rumsey family. We are grateful for that ongoing support.

The landscape of secondary school admission grows more and more complex each year with many factors affecting admission outcomes. Affordability and globalization continue to provide admission directors with delicate balancing acts of meeting the mission goals of their schools and sustaining enrollments. Students in the Class of 2015 were guided by strong, talented faculty mentors as they created extraordinary opportunities in their secondary school searches.

We are thankful to all who have helped promote this special place.

Seventy-eight students earned diplomas in 2015, the largest graduating class in the School’s history. The challenge this presented to the Admission Office was embraced enthusiastically, and in September there were no empty seats at the first Morning Meeting. Dormitories are full and the Lower School now enrolls an all time high of 87 students. Our full enrollment is the result of single digit attrition of existing students and an uncommonly high 74% yield of accepted candidates. Current students come from 15 states, 17 countries and 26 surrounding towns. Thirty-five percent of our students benefit from the $1.15 of financial aid that was awarded to families who applied and qualified for assistance.

Guided by strong, talented faculty mentors, graduates create extraordinary opportunities in their secondary school searches.

In an endorsement of Rumsey Hall’s program and the candidates we offer, over forty secondary school admission representatives from schools around the country and world visited campus to meet our Seniors. Schools seek out Rumsey Hall’s VIIth Formers/9th Graders for their accomplishments in leadership, scholarship, citizenship, the arts and athletics. Rumsey applicants are highly regarded by admission committees as confident, well-prepared students who are eager to take on new challenges. I travel to dozens of schools each year to visit our Alumni, sustain strong relationships with admission directors and maintain a current understanding of each school’s culture. These visits reaffirm that our Alumni distinguish themselves in their secondary schools and affirm the value of their preparation at Rumsey. In line with the mission goals of our school, Rumsey graduates are active, nimble, productive members of our global society with extraordinary experiences and life skills providing the background for their successes. While the world continues to change at a rapid pace, our Alumni are well equipped to solve problems, extending Honesty, Kindness and Respect in all their encounters. Members of the Class of 2016 hope to emulate the success of our most recent, dynamic graduates. We are already deep in the business of guiding the new Senior Class through the placement process. At the same time we wish the Class of 2015 well and Godspeed!

Funds Raised Reflect a Unified Community

Donors embraced the School’s priority to grow the Endowment, $1.5 million raised. Throughout the year the partnership of many created the momentum to raise $1.5 million in gifts during the 2014/2015 fiscal year. As the community collectively invested in the effort to preserve Rumsey’s unique culture, donors embraced the School’s priority to grow the Endowment. A larger Endowment will provide permanent gifts that will fund forward thinking curriculum initiatives for our students. Annual Endowment annuity will continually benefit a vibrant campus life and help the School respond creatively to student programming needs well into the future. A broad cross section of the Rumsey family positively impacted the School’s advancement. Over 200 enthusiastic volunteers shared time and talent with the School, nearly 100% of current parents made gifts and an ever increasing number of loyal Alumni supported Rumsey. This broad range of ownership for the School was evident at The Annual Benefit Auction, a collaboration of effort and generosity that raised $379,000 for School programs. This success is fuel for future ambitions. It is important to shine a spotlight on our esteemed 22 member Board of Trustees for the demonstrated care they have for the people of Rumsey and their long-range planning to preserve the culture and financial strength of the School. We are grateful for the hard work and wisdom this special group of Alumni and Current and Past Parents invest to ensure the Rumsey experience is sustained and preserved for generations to come. We are deeply appreciative to the many people who have made Rumsey Hall a focus of their philanthropic support. Thank you for making the School’s advancement a priority.

Her Boys Were Numbered in the Hundreds For 40 Years, the Late Mrs. Lillias Rumsey Sanford Was a Second Mother to Youths at Rumsey Hall, Cornwall By DONALD W. SMITH When Mrs. Lillias Rumsey Sanford, nationally known woman educator and founder of Rumsey Hall, a boarding school for young boys at Cornwall, died on April 16, last, in her ninetieth year, hundreds of boys and grown men throughout the country were profoundly affected. It is safe to say they were not thinking of the facts, remarkable in themselves, that she founded the school when she was 50 years old, and had never taught a day in her life. No, it was more probable that they were thinking, wistfully, of the stately forceful woman who, despite a rather awesome appearance on the surface of things, could feel as keenly as they did when victory or defeat attended their lessons and sports. As you talk to Mrs. John Sanford, her daughter-in-law, who was associated

with the late founder for the past 21 years prior to her death, and who is now carrying on in the traditions she moulded, it seems as if her passing had not the note of finality about it one usually associates with death itself. One learns that Mrs. Lillias Sanford and Rumsey Hall were synonymous for the past 40 years, and that her dominant character, coupled with her love and understanding of the boys who came under her guidance, will always remain an integral part of the school in the opinion of those that knew her. The late Mrs. Sanford’s success in founding and continuing Rumsey Hall for two score years, the last eight of them in blindness, is all the more remarkable when it is realized that she did not come from a family with pedagogical leanings. Her father was a prominent manufacturer in Seneca Falls, New York, and the child Lillias grew up in an atmosphere of men who were industrialists. The late Mrs. Sanford attended Vassar, and was a member of the class of 1872, but she did not graduate. Mrs. Sanford was to have been a special guest of honor at Vassar’s seventy-fifth anniversary reunion this coming June. After her college career, she married the late LeonThis early photograph of Mrs. Lillias Sanford was taken ard G. Sanford on the steps of Rumsey Hall about the time she moved her school of 23 boys from Seneca Falls, N.Y., to Cornwall in and her life was 1907. She was to spend 33 of the happiest years of her life here.

A comparatively recent camera study of the late Mrs. Lillias Rumsey Sanford, founder of Rumsey Hall, a successful boarding school for young boys in Cornwall. This remarkable and nationally known woman educator did not start her school until she was 50 years of age, and had never taught a day in her life.

like that of any other young married woman of her position in life. It was in 1900 that some of Mrs. Sanford’s friends approached her with the idea of starting a school for girls. Mrs. Sanford liked the thought of operating a school, but she knew next to nothing about small girls. But boys were different. She had always had a soft spot in her heart for them. She had several small nephews of her own, and understood them thoroughly. So she decided to start a school for young boys in her father’s large home at Seneca Falls. Mrs. Sanford incorporated it for $2500. She commenced with 10 boys, ranging in age from six to 15. The idea was so successful that by 1907, she began to cast around for larger quarters in a more rural atmosphere. Finally, she decided upon the present location in Cornwall. The lovely countryside, with its outlying hills, appealed to her. She brought her 23 boys to Cornwall, and renamed the school Rumsey Hall.

It is interesting to note, in passing, that Frances Folsom Cleveland, now Mrs. Preston and then wife of the late President Grover Cleveland, was one of Mrs. Sanford’s close friends, and one of the original incorporators of Rumsey Hall. Later, however, Mrs. Sanford bought back the stock with which she incorporated, and thus became sole owner of Rumsey Hall. Although she never taught in her own school, being concerned with the task of administration, and that of looking after “her boys,” she knew how to obtain excellent teachers. Louis H. Schutte, present headmaster, and David G. Barr, assistant headmaster, have been with the school for 34 and 26 years, respectively, and it is to these men that the late Mrs. Sanford always gave deserving credit for the high scholastic standing maintained at Rumsey Hall. Because there were two Mrs. Sanfords at Rumsey Hall for years, the boys differentiated between the two women by referring to the late Mrs.

Lillias Rumsey Sanford as “Mrs. L. R.,” and the present head of the school as “Mrs. John.” Mrs. L. R., to use the term by which her boys best knew her, always tempered a strict sense of justice and discipline with a rare sympathetic understanding. She easily dominated everyone within her world which was Rumsey Hall. A boy might inwardly quake upon being summoned by Mrs. L. R., if his report card showed poor marks for the period, but he always felt an appreciative glow from the help and understanding she gave him. She might be stern in her disapproval of a mark in some subject, but she was never short on the encouragement she gave a boy. A practice she maintained throughout her long career was that of sending a letter of remembrance to every boy who had ever attended her school on his birthday. As the years passed, her birthday correspondence, of necessity, grew voluminous, but she never relinquished the habit. The first thing she did each morning upon arising was to get out her birthday book, and see to whom she would write to that day. Up until 10 years ago, Mrs. L. R. did all her own bookkeeping, and attended to the writing of all letters to parents. She did it all in longhand, and often stayed at her desk until midnight. Eight years ago her eyesight failed her, and she spent the rest of her life in blindness. But this did not stop her from taking as keen an interest as ever in the boys of her school, and she kept in touch with their records through her secretary and Mrs. John Sanford. In the early days of Rumsey Hall Mrs. L. R. dressed her boys in dinner jackets on special occasions, and at one time the boys were distinguished by the Etonian collars they wore. But this custom was abandoned when this type of collar went out of style. The late Mrs. Sanford was always on hand to say good-bye to a boy who was leaving for a visit or vacation period, and she was always on the front steps of Rumsey Hall to welcome him back again. She paid a great deal of attention to a boy’s personal appearance, and many a man of today can remember her when she gave his tie a motherly pat, or passed a critical eye over the way his hair

was combed. Prior to her blindness, she was always down to breakfast with the boys. She knew them intimately, all their little failings and weaknesses. She could be gruff upon occasion, but a strong sense of humor tempered her strictness. Rumsey Hall has ever been proud of the way in which Mrs. L. R. insisted that her boys use correct grammar, In a picturesque setting among the hills of Cornwall stands Rumsey Hall, where the late Mrs. Sanford moulded the lives of successive generations of growing boys. RICK BUTLER P ’20, ’23 Upper School Science Teacher Director of Residential Life Director of Outdoor Education

What led you to work at a private school, Rumsey in particular? I had a great experience as a boarding student at The Loomis Chaffee School, CT (’92) and when I was looking for a teaching position I wanted to find a similar educational community. My uncle, John Butler, was a teacher and administrator at Rumsey for nine years and he introduced me to Rumsey Hall. What makes the Rumsey experience so unique and special? I enjoy working with students in all aspects of life teaching, coaching and dorm parenting. How would you describe your teaching style? I am a builder and a problem solver. My physical science classes involve lots of hands-on learning. In small lab groups students measure calories, split water into its elements, solve challenge problems, and compete in a pasta bridge contest.

What technology device do you find most useful at school? Outside of school? At school – I use my SmartBoard to connect Physics to the real world. Outside of school – My iPad keeps me connected. What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of the classroom? Sailing, kayaking, skiing, playing games and woodworking Tell us something we don’t know about you. After high school I took a year off to work and ski in Crested Butte, CO. JENNIFER KOLPAK P ’13, ’15, ’17 IIIrd Form (Fifth Grade) Teacher

What led you to work at a private school, Rumsey in particular? In the early 1990s when I was dating my husband, Doug, he would bring me to Rumsey to reminisce about his childhood memories. His aunt and uncle, Joanna and Bill Wishart, began their teaching careers at Rumsey and he spent numerous summer days and holidays in Washington Depot. Our hope at the time was to move back to Connecticut and find a school our three children could attend and where we could both teach. We were looking for a school that had a close-knit family environment, where we could teach students in small class sizes and be directly responsible for curriculum development. To work with friends who could help us raise our children and make us better teachers and people was our ideal situation. After spending just a few days on campus, we knew we had found exactly what we were looking for. What makes the Rumsey experience so unique and special? My ability to interact with my children during the school day. They have grown and thrived at Rumsey and it’s so special to have one of them come by my classroom during recess or at the end of the day to share a struggle or a most recent achievement. The messages on my whiteboard in my classroom from them or the smiles I observe from afar make this experience one in a million. When I refer to my children, I include every student I have taught during my time at Rumsey. A visit, card, email or short little note reminds me that I can make an impact in the lives of my students. How would you describe your teaching style? I feel that the best learning takes place when students feel safe to take risks knowing that their teacher and classmates will support and assist them. Developing a relationship with my students inside and outside of the classroom and nurturing them while showing them respect helps them trust me. Teaching to a variety of learning styles is always a priority for me when planning and implementing instruction. My goal is to have a classroom mixed with laughter and learning. What are some of your favorite moments from a day in the life at Rumsey? The memories I hold most dear are the simple ones. Sitting on the bench on a sunny afternoon watching the Lower School kids play by the ponds, passing a colleague along the sidewalk knowing a quick

joke is about to playout that will change my mood for the day and walking around campus in the afternoon traveling from game to game watching the kids play their sports. What technology device do you find most useful at school? Outside of school? My interactive projector because it allows me to reach students through a multisensory approach. The technology device I find most useful at home is my iPhone, which allows me to keep connected with my family and friends at all times. What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of the classroom? I enjoy walking the golf course with my husband and kids while they play golf at the local country club. I enjoy spending time at the beach with family and friends. One of my favorite activities is watching my children’s sporting events in the rink, on the field or in the water. Tell us something we don’t know about you. When I was 28, I left my tenured public school teaching job in my hometown where I had just been selected teacher of the year. My husband and I decided to sell our home in Southington, CT to move to a small third floor apartment in a private boarding school in Wolfeboro, NH. This change required my husband to make a career and lifestyle change that we both felt would enrich our family. I stayed at home with my children until my youngest entered kindergarten and then moved back to Connecticut and restarted my teaching career at Rumsey. Those years were a special gift that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. What would be the one book you would recommend every student should read? I believe that children’s picture books can teach amazing lessons just as well as long novels. As I prepare my IIIrd Formers to enter the Upper School I do a series of lessons on perseverance. I read my class The Little Engine That Could, by Watty Piper. It is a childhood favorite of mine that was first given to me by a coach I remember fondly. It reinforces that hard work, consistent effort and overcoming fears can lead to success.
