6th Place ~ Eaglebrook Tournament

Following a highly successful season is always a tough task and with only 4 returning players we knew this year had the potential to be a rebuilding year. The first half of the season we put up a respectable 4-2 record but, knowing that the tougher opponents would come toward the end of the schedule, we couldn't let things slide and so the team worked just as hard in practice to keep the momentum going. Highlights of the season included coming back against a tough Salisbury team from 0-5 down, enjoying a winning home record, and choosing to challenge ourselves by playing Avon's IIIs instead of their IVs. The Boys Varsity Soccer team dedicated themselves to hard work and holds a promising future as we look to next season. Best wishes to our departing Seniors. We wish them much success and hope they keep in touch!

The 2023 Field Hockey Team achieved an extraordinary undefeated record of 11-0, a testament to their exceptional skill and unwavering determination. Remarkably, only a single goal was scored against us all season, highlighting the team's impenetrable defense and outstanding goalkeeping. This success was fueled by incredible teamwork and camaraderie both on and off the field, led by our two Seniors and Captains, Hadley and Lucy, whose positive leadership inspired the entire team. The girls supported each other and pushed through every challenge together, with Hadley and Lucy setting the tone for dedication and perseverance. Their relentless hard work and commitment to excellence were evident in every practice and game, driving them to victory each time they stepped onto the field. Congratulations on a wonderful season!

1st Place Rick Spooner Volleyball Classic

All-Tournament MVP: Elizabeth Ensign

All-Tournament Team Members: Olivia Ensign & Leah Popper

The Fall 2023 Varsity Volleyball Team had, quite possibly, the best season in the history of Rumsey Hall School with a total of 15 season wins and a 1st place finish at the Rick Spooner Classic. Half of the 16 girls on the team were Seniors, whose talents will be greatly missed next year. Though we hope to see them on the courts of their next schools, the remaining underformers hope not to have to face this talented bunch as some become the competition. To speak of highlights this season is hard because the whole experience was fabulous and filled with great success! Each win brought us closer and the dinners out, balloon dive challenge, and glow-in-the-dark volleyball just added to the fun! Seniors, congratulations on an incredible season! As a group, you have pushed the whole team to perform at a high level and we will

take that drive with us into the upcoming fall season. Our wish is that you bring harmony and fighting spirit or “toushi wa” with you in all you do. Best wishes to all for a beautiful summer with lots of volleyball practice!

The ‘23 Varsity Football Team was composed of a great group of talented, hardworking, dedicated athletes. We started the season at Williston Northampton and had a solid showing at their Jamboree. We got to compete against Williston, Eaglebrook, and Fessenden. Our players made us proud, and showed they were ready for our real games to begin. We then went to our first game against Avon in a monsoon. From there, we went on to a 6-2 season, with one loss coming on a last second call that could have gone either way. We had a season of great individual efforts that led to great team results. Thank you to the Seniors moving on to new fields; thank you for all you meant to this team. You have left us in a better place, with a strong cast of returning starters and promising players ready to step up and continue the proud tradition of Rumsey Football.

CROSS COUNTRY

Record: 5 – 3 - 1

Coaches: Mrs. Dyball & Mr. Walker

Captains: Griffin Hawley & Mikey Wang

MVP: Hans Wang

Coaches’ Award: Beaux Fleming Blue Dog Award: Vivienne Hoagland

Cross Country 2023 had a season of considerable success marked by true grit resembling the Blue Dog spirit. Finishing the year with a 5-3-1 record, the Blue Dogs clashed against IMS at our campus and theirs six (6) times, earning wins and losses alike, but each time every runner left everything on the course. We raced at beautiful courses like Millbrook and clocked some impressive times, such as Hans Wang and Max Schunder, who consistently raced at sub-6 minute paces. Other strong runners included Mason Moritz, Aaron Humphreys, Beaux Fleming, Bennett Maguire, Justin Barfield, Gavin Bertuglia, Noah Nicksa, Hunter Hoagland, and our rock star sole female runner, Vivienne Hoagland. Captains Griffin Hawley and Mikey Wang did a phenomenal job leading the team through the fall, from exhausting long distance runs to intense hill and speed workouts. Coaches Chrissy Dyball and James Walker thoroughly

enjoyed working with this young group of hard workers, and fast disciplined runners. Go Blue Dogs!

We had racers earn podium every race, saw one of our Seniors make an incredible showing as a Tier 2 racer in the Norbrook Championship Race, and brought home the Junior Division Cup this year. Thank you, riders, for adventures!

Girls Varsity Basketball had a triumphant season marked by outstanding teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship. With a series of key victories, including remarkable wins against IMS and Kingswood Oxford in the same season, which hadn't been achieved since 2018. What made their success even more remarkable was the collective effort of every player on the team, as each girl contributed to scoring throughout the season. This display of unity and support for one another not only demonstrated their individual talents but also highlighted the strength of their bond as a team. It is important to recognize the exceptional contributions of Elizabeth, Olivia, and Suri. Their dedication, leadership, and skill was instrumental in the team's success. Not only did they exhibit remarkable talent on the court, they were also exemplary in their kindness and respect toward each other and their teammates. Their positive attitude and sportsmanship set a shining example for the entire team, leaving a lasting impact on the program. Congratulations to Elizabeth, Olivia, and Suri for their outstanding final season on Girls Varsity Basketball, and best wishes in all your future endeavors!

The 2024 Varsity Ski Team set out to ski hard, compete with grace, and have a lot of fun on the slopes. It was wonderful to see the team blossom to 25 racers allowing us an A and B level group. The A team was composed of 8 boys and 6 girls with skills that ranged from seasoned racers to those with strong foundational skiing skills that were new to racing. While on the mountain during both practices and races, the skiers exhibited a strong sense of sportsmanship, cooperation, and camaraderie. Throughout the season, they fought hard against their opponents--Housatonic, Harvey, Dutchess Day, Washington Montessori and IMS. With strong skiing throughout the league, Rumsey often finished in the middle of the pack. Each skier showed great improvement on the snow in their own individual ways ranging from the basics like body positioning and finding their edges, to the larger team goals of reading a course and

making smart decisions about how to approach a gate. Every skier played an integral role in our success this season as did their amazingly supportive families.

This year’s Boys Varsity Hockey Team was led by our ten Seniors: Brady, Mikey, Oliver, Tyler, Teddy, Chris, Uli, Junior, Jason, and Liam. Through hard work and determination, the players improved and came together as a strong team. Their consistent effort and commitment to hockey helped them earn a final record of 17-6-2. Our team's season highlight was coming from behind to win against Brunswick at home 7-5. Some other notable highlights of the season were our Second Place finish at Upland, Third Place finish in the annual Pavek Cup and an outdoor win against IMS under the lights at Silo Ridge. The future for Rumsey Boys Varsity Ice Hockey looks bright as we welcome back 9 returners. Coaches Butler and O’Shea would like to congratulate the whole team on a job well done, wish our graduating Seniors luck in their future endeavors, and look forward to continuing to grow the hockey program.

The 2023/24 Girls Varsity Hockey team worked very hard throughout a busy season and finished the winter with an impressive 18-5-2 record. The season started before the Winter Recess with a decisive win over Choate, but two consecutive losses to a strong Upland team followed, which anticipated a challenging season-long rivalry with Upland. Rumsey finished 3rd at the Upland Tournament with a 2-2 record. The team continued to play excellent hockey through the middle of the season. The Blue Dogs hosted the Przygocki Cup in mid - February with hopes of defending the 2023 Championship title. Rumsey beat the Danbury Hat Tricks in game one, tied the Shoreline Sharks in game two, and beat Upland in the most thrilling game of the season to win the Tournament for the second year in a row. It was an unforgettable season and we wish Levi, Hadley, Addy, Caroline, and Lucy all the best in the years ahead. We also thank Raven and Briana for all that they have contributed to this team over the last few seasons, and we wish them all the best in the future.

Captain: Jack Murdica

1st Place Lower Boat Regatta

When the 2024 Rumsey Crew Team arrived for the first day at practice, none of us knew if the group strewn out in front of us could rise to the level of last year’s crew. We had graduated several high performing rowers and thought their shoes– or in our case, foot stretchers– would be nearly impossible to fill. But from the first strokes of our Saturday Winter Warrior’s Program to the last stroke across the finish line at the Lower Boat Regatta, this year’s crew proved time and time again just how much they were willing to rise to the challenge. Led by our fearless Captain Jack Murdica, our crews won several hard earned victories. These include three boats qualifying for the finals and a third place medal finish for our Girls A Boat– the “Aussie”- at a particularly cold and wet Founder’s Day Regatta as well as a first place finish at our annual Lower Boat Regatta against some highly competitive teams including Kent, Salisbury, and Choate.

While crew is often regarded as “the ultimate team sport” and though we could talk about each and every rower and coxswain for hours, the Coaches would like to recognize our 13 graduating

Seniors. Your combined leadership contributed so much to our team’s success this season and we wish you all the best of luck at secondary school.

Yours in fast boats,

Coaches Butler, Scheidt, Pastor, Kinsella, and Papadellis.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Record: 9 - 4

Coaches: Messrs. Perreault & Dyball

Captains: Leo Detroyer & Uli Linn

MVP: Cooper Bunce

MIP: Samuel Giraldi

Coaches’ Award: Gunther Scheidt Blue Dog Award: Beaux Fleming

With a returning core of players, the Varsity Baseball Team looked to build upon the success of 2023 and add to the win column despite having several challenging games vs. strong JV programs. Senior Captains Uli Linn and Leo Detroyer helped lead the way with a strong underform supporting cast. Returning players Gunther Scheidt, Aaden Walters, Anthony Walters, and Teddy Kowalchick along with new editions Ryan Kim, Chet Kingsley, Gavin Bertuglia, Sam Giraldi, Owen Rinker, Bodhi Dawson, and Beaux Fleming helped round out a well-balanced squad. With an offense capable of exploding, scoring double digits in more than half of their games, Rumsey managed to score 4 times more runs than they allowed this season. The pitching staff was led by Cooper Bunce with appearances by Leo Detroyer, Ryan Kim, Uli Linn, and up-and-coming Vth Former Chet Kingsley. The team finished with a record of 9-4 and, with a solid core of returning players, is geared up for another strong season in 2025. Congratulations to all of the Seniors on a great season, with special thanks to Uli Linn as he graduates this year as the only 3-year Varsity Baseball player. Go Blue Dogs!

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Record: 7 - 2

Coaches: Mr. Mandl, Ms. Dunham, & Ms. Quinones

Captains: Madeleine Tobey & Lucy Traina

MVP: Lucy Traina MIPs: Lyann Noh & Leah Popper

Coaches’ Award: Bridget Walsh

Blue Dog Award: Andy Ko

The 2024 Varsity Softball team had a very fulfilling season. With a mix of experienced players and those new to the sport, this was a group of athletes who did not get intimidated by our opponents. The team was led by Senior Captain & MVP, Lucy Traina, a fierce and skilled athlete who led by example on and off the field. Our other Captain, Maddie Tobey, stepped into a pitching role early in the season and kept our spirits up in each game. Once she returned from an early season injury, Bridget Walsh earned the Coaches Award with powerful pitching

performances and providing balance to the infield when not pitching. Our record was 7-2 and we had several big wins, winning most games by 4 or more runs. While we lost our first game to Westminster 12-14 due to some errors in the field, we quickly recovered to win 6 of the next 7, including a revenge game win handing Westy a 19-6 defeat. While the injuries piled up on this team, due mostly to putting their bodies on the line each day, one team highlight was a tight two-run win over Renbrook, where we showed off our team speed on the bases and excellent hitting from Leah Popper and Lucy. This was our “warrior” game where several players overcame injuries to fight our way to victory over a strong opponent. Our overall defense was another highlight as all the players developed over the season to confidently know where to go with the ball in different situations. We won several games because we executed well when the other team hit the ball, making the “simple” plays and executing under pressure. This was a team of gritty players, but our Blue Dog Award went to Andy Ko who “tried” catching for the first time and became an excellent field leader. Leah and Lyann Noh won the MIP Awards, each contributing in the field and at bat. As the season progressed, these athletes learned the finer points of the game, like stealing and stopping runners from advancing, and how to use these to our advantage. These athletes most importantly, learned how to be competitive athletes who also had a ton of fun as a team. Thank you to all of the coaches and players for making this an excellent season of winning, learning, and fun.

BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE

Record: 4 - 5

Coaches: Messrs. Ketchum & Green

Captains: Zachary Kocienda & Patrick Lufkin

MVP: Miles Wolff

Coaches’ Award: Jeronimo Manzano

MIP: Henry Saliba

Blue Dog Award: Dylan Wafle

This year’s version of the Varsity Lacrosse team had a familiar feel to last year’s group. With a healthy group of Seniors - 13 to be exact, the squad added 5 important underform players who all saw starting time throughout the season- Morales in Goal, Calore at Close D, Schunder on the FO and Midfield, and Wolff and Badaracco at attack. With a schedule that seemed in flux for a good portion of the early season, we were not sure when our first flight was, but we would be ready. We started the season flying high with four consecutive wins. What a first half. These wins, with the exception of one, were against less skilled opponents. We knew that tougher tests awaited us down the stretch. A hot day against a large Avon IIIs team saw our first loss of the season. This was followed by heartbreaking 1 goal losses to both IMS and Avon againboth at home. Another loss to Taft put us at 4-4 with one game to go against IMS on their turf. The dogs worked as hard as they ever had in the heat to be sure we were ready- while other teams cut practice short to swim in the river. We played IMS tightly early but unfortunately fell to them to finish the season 4-5. Thank you to the leadership of Captains Kocienda at Close D and Lufkin on Attack, the other Senior on Attack- Shin; Midfielders- Hawley, Son, Schemm,

Racine, Wafle, Saliba, Curtiss, Manzano; FO and Midfielder Walsh; Shine at Close D. Your leadership and energy will be missed next year, but you left your mark on the culture of the program! Good luck next year- Wheels Up!

GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE

Record: 5 - 5

Coaches: Mrs. Kappler & Ms. DeGrazia’09

Captains: Levi Cherosnick & Hadley Ford

MIP: Sonny Kinsella Coaches’ Award: Arabella Guggenthaler

Blue Dog Award: Madelyn Conto

4th Place Rumsey Lacrosse Invitational

The 2024 Girls Varsity Lacrosse season was filled with laughter, camaraderie, success and heartbreak. We began the season with 12 returning players and we were fortunate enough to build a strong team that ranged from IV Formers to Seniors. The team was composed of twenty-two talented, hardworking girls who exemplify the values of sportsmanship. While on the field during both practices and games, the girls played with a strong sense of cooperation and heart. This helped them win gracefully against their weaker opponents like Berkshire and Canterbury. They also fought hard against their strongest opponents IMS and Hotchkiss. Throughout the season, each player improved in their own individual ways ranging from the basics like quick sticks and ground balls, to the larger team goals of communication and special play creation. We also hosted the Third Annual Rumsey Hall Girls Lacrosse Invitational a wonderful Saturday morning filled with great competition and teamwork. Additionally, we had the amazing support of our Manager Addy who even suited up for our Senior game AND scored a goal! Every girl played an integral role in our success this season as did their amazingly supportive families. We thank you all for being there with us throughout this fabulous season. We are heartbroken to graduate a fantastic group of Seniors: Captains Levi and Hadley, as well as Suri, Victoria and Addy. We wish them all the best of luck next year at their new schools.

VARSITY A TENNIS

Record: 5 - 5

Coaches: Mrs. Saxe, Ms. Real, & Ms. McChesney

MVP: Ripley Giles

Captain: Louis Thomas

MIP: Hutch Reardon Blue Dog Award: Alan Zhou

This season, the Varsity Tennis team was spoiled with talent. To say each and every member of our team is "good" at tennis would be a blatant understatement. Like pieces of a puzzle, every one of our thirteen (13) talented members played a vital role in all of our successes. And it

should be noted that we did, indeed, have many successful games, sets, and matches this season. Of course, like any team, we were not without our own set of unique challenges. We experienced injuries, illnesses, and confusion about indoor balls vs outdoor balls. What none of us were prepared for was a coaching change during the first weeks of the season...a change that started out as temporary and, unfortunately, needed to continue for the remainder of the schedule. Nonetheless, we battled through the rollercoaster of emotions and pressed onward. Thank you to our amazingly supportive families for cheering us on and keeping us well fed, all the drivers from the Rumsey community that took time out of their busy schedules to drive us to our away games, and to Mr. Przygocki for keeping us looking sharp! Today, of all days, is a great day to be a Blue Dog.
