from the board chair On behalf of Rumsey’s Board of Trustees, I’m honored to express my sincere appreciation to all those loyal alumni, parents, and friends listed in this document who gave so generously in support of Rumsey Hall last year. It is a powerful testimony to the impact of a Rumsey Hall education and the enduring gratitude of the individuals and families who have been touched by this special school. Thank you for your important part in ensuring Rumsey’s continued strength.

I am pleased to report that despite the challenges and uncertainties of the last six months, the School is thriving. We opened in September with a full complement of students–85% here on campus and 15% taking advantage of our well-received distance learning program. This remarkable achievement is the result of months of tireless effort and careful planning by the School’s incredible administrators, faculty, and staff to open the School while making every effort to keep our students and employees safe.

I am extremely excited about the year ahead, and in particular about the opportunity to bring a new leader to Rumsey. I can report that the process is off to a strong start, and this is in no small part due to the broad financial support of our parents and alumni and the devotion of the Rumsey Hall community. This sign of support has clearly been a compelling and attractive consideration for applicants. For this, and for all the ways your support directly benefits Rumsey’s students, teachers, coaches, and staff, I send my sincere gratitude. Go Blue Dogs!

I assumed my role as Chief Financial Officer mid-June of this year, as the fiscal year 2019-2020 came to a close, several months after the academic year came to an abrupt end. If there was ever a time to test the strength of Rumsey Hall as a school and community, this year was it. I can say, that after three months as CFO, Rumsey Hall stands proud, strong, and in very good financial condition. I worked side-by-side with a great team of colleagues this summer: led by Brooke Giese, as Interim Head of School, the team worked tirelessly to ensure that the School would not only open on time, but set a standard of excellence in safety and planning for the students arriving this fall.

The past fiscal year saw the School impacted financially in several ways: first, a drop in net revenues due to lower enrollment and tuition rebates for the early end of the spring semester; and secondly, a shortfall in giving due to the economic uncertainties due to COVID-19. In spite of all these obstacles, Rumsey trustees, alumni, parents, grandparents, friends and community contributed 85% of last year’s giving. The School’s endowment ended at $28.7 million, up $0.5 million despite market volatility.

Rumsey Hall’s engaged and dedicated trustees fully support the talented and hardworking faculty and staff to provide a world class education for all our students. Rumsey Hall’s campus and facilities are only outrivaled by the strength of our community. The future is bright and I look forward to the challenges ahead, knowing that we have the best talent to handle any crisis.

The global pandemic forced Rumsey Hall to reimagine most of the School’s Spring Term events and activities, including fundraising efforts. To put the School in a better position for a strong close to the 2019-20 fiscal year, the Advancement Office conducted a Giving Days campaign on June 3rd and June 4th, 2020. We announced the campaign on May 27th via email and social media and encouraged our constituents to make an Annual Fund gift in advance of June 3rd. Again, the focus of Giving Days was to increase Annual Fund participation rather than target a specific dollar goal. After considering the data available regarding Giving Day 2019, we set our Giving Days goal at 58 gifts in honor of the 58 members of the Class of 2020.

The Giving Days campaign officially launched at 8 AM on June 3rd and ran until midnight on June 4th. Despite the uncertainty in the world, the Rumsey community came together in support of the School, and the response to Giving Days was overwhelming.

To keep our constituents engaged, we shared up-to-the-minute updates regarding our progress toward our goal on social media, including fun photos and videos featuring students and faculty.

It came as no surprise that we met our goal of 58 gifts. At 8 PM on June 3rd, the Advancement Office announced our achievement as well as a stretch goal of an additional 39 gifts for an overall total of 97 gifts in honor of the 97 members of Rumsey’s dedicated faculty and staff.

Our constituents heard our call and stepped up without hesitation. We met that stretch goal and announced a second stretch goal at 8 PM on June 4th. This time, we challenged the community to make 23 more gifts by midnight to help us secure our final stretch goal 120 gifts in honor of 120 years of Rumsey. Not only did we meet that final goal, but we also exceeded it.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we received 142 gifts and raised nearly $134,000 for the 2019-20 Annual Fund. This was 50 gifts and nearly $97,000 more than last year!

Fall Parents’ Weekend Brings the Community Together The 35th Annual Rumsey Hall Benefit was held on Friday, October 11, 2019 over Parents’ Weekend.
