// With the main criteria identied as shelter, permeability and privacy it was decided a roof structure was necessary - as the mature trees of the site were considered an essential asset, the structure was designed in order to conform with their locations.

In addition it was deemed necessary to provide

from the elements within the space and quiet

nooks

within which people can sit.

DIVISON OF SPACE AND FUNCTION

// The space within the proposed roof structure was required to perform a variety of functions: _ As the existing space is extremely linear and exposed, it offered no sense of privacy when lingering - as the main thoroughfare was heavily oriented East to West with seating running parallel, users of the space were ‘on show’ to those passing through the space. In order to address this issue it is proposed that a number of small, intimate (whilst still offering a level of transparency) nooks which divide those who want to sit from users passing through the site. _ The main vaulted section of the roof structure is to be of adequate size to accommodate the high volume of foot traffic which is associated with the connectivity of the surrounding buildings, it is also to have a multitude of entry/exit points to ensure permeability through the site is increased.

_The main section of the roof structure is to not only act as a thoroughfare but be of adequate size to accommodate outdoor events such as markets and university functions.

PERMEABILITY & CONNECTIVITY

UNION

// Permeability of the existing site is a major issue - based on a number of surveys of foot traffic conducted about the site it is evident the fencing which skirts the site’s boundaries cause the majority of the East-West traffic to pass around the space rather than utilising it. The issue of increasing permeability and in turn the connectivity of the surrounding buildings is to be identified as a major issue which needs to be addressed when redesigning the Union Lawn.

Pedestrian Bicycle

An increase in permeability would result in an increase in use and functionality of the space.

The panoramic image below depicts the issues surrounding the fencing off of the site’s boundaries with most of the foot traffic avoiding the Union Lawn space.
