What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

BROAD My Vision, Your Vision, Ewevision M

Y new big idea! Eweovision! Gettit, gettit? Like Eurovision only more sheepish. It’s going to be brilliant. Bring a bit of much needed sparkle to the borders. Bring some fabulous lights and smoke machines to the borders. Bring unbridled, patriotic, nationalistic aggro to the borders. Everybody can dress up in glittery clothes, wave flags and shout a lot. I can’t wait! But what is most important is the music. Enough of your blues, your jazz, your Balkan beats, your singer/songwriters. It’s time for some genuine pop crap, preferably with incomprehensible cod English lyrics. My plan is this. We, at the central Broad Sheep penthouse office, will assign each town in the Broad Sheep area a European country to represent. These will be Small Ads 4 carefully chosen by a panel of experts to perfectly reflect the character of the country Philosophy 6 in question. The town will then choose a local musician or band to represent them and Art 8 on the appointed day we will all get together in some massive unfriendly football field Art workshops 14 or supermarket car park with a couple of monster television screens and a beautiful blonde presenter who will shout out “Talgarth, NUL POINTS!” Cinema 20 To cut a long story short I have been in consultation with the aforementioned panel of Dance 24 experts and this is the way their thinking is going in terms of country and town pairings. Food 26 First up we need a big sprawling town with a heavy military presence an overbearing Letters 27 political establishment and a desire to win at all costs to represent Russia. Yes, it’s Hereford. Hereford with all it’s theatres, pubs, cafes, museums, colleges is bound to Music 28 triumph over its surly neighbour over the hill. Or is it??? Music workshops 45 Representing the Ukraine we have plucky Leominster led by Norrie on the trombone. Band directory 48 Will Leominster be able to pull of the upset of the year? How will the other nations Theatre 50 vote? It’s a cliffhanger worthy of Eastenders. It’s Leicester City all over again (sorry, Word 54 but it’s the law that every article these days has to mention The Foxes at least once). Next we need to find somebody to represent France. Somewhere they won’t deign Grass roots 58 to speak to you if you have the wrong accent. Somewhere that is obsessed with Comp therapies 60 food and cooking which they think is superior to the rest of the world. Wine, markets, chateaux, bridges. Of course (you got there ahead of me), it can only be Ludlow. We take no How about Greece? What we need is a place on the edge of the area where the responsibility for the veracity of the government has run out of money and there is lots of water. I know Powys County information herein Council and Llandrindod Wells? (Next door, Builth can be Albania). Pete Mustill Now here’s a bit of a problem - Malta. Number 1 in the Telegraph’s list of best Mayfield, Stapleton, places for the Brits to retire to, still stuck in the 1950s with English as it’s first language Nr Presteigne, Powys and lashings of old English automobiles and telephone boxes and crawling with oldies. LD8 2LW Yup, it’s a perfect fit - Presteigne. Tel: 01544 260051 I wonder who can we fix up with Ireland. Hmm, let me see. Literary pretentions. Email: info@broadsheep.com Lots and lots of tourists cluttering up the place. American Presidents running around Website: www.broadsheep.com desperately looking for their ancestors. I think it’s going to be Hay-on-Wye and indeed Clinton did show up there a couple of years back. We seem to doing quite well, but it is getting harder. Cafe society, booze, music, the sweet smell of something else. Yes I think Bishop’s Castle could make a nice job of the Netherlands apart from the topography and the teenage pregnancy rates. For some reason I’ve written down, Italy - Newtown, although I can’t for the life of me think why. Art galleries, pizza shops? Look, I admit this was a rubbish idea. I’ve run out of pairings already. Tenbury and Great Britain? Ledbury and Switzerland? No they don’t really add up and I’m terrified to say anything about Knighton who are already giving Mr P a hard time on page 27. So I’ll just send off my Lottery grant application as it is and we’ll see what happens. Frankly it’s best not to get your hopes up.

philosophy

Sorry About Everything? A

POLOGIES to Jane Austen. We can all agree that it is a truth universally acknowledged that a man or woman in possession of a copy of Broadsheep must be a pretty smart cookie, up there with the brainiest. Extensive research has revealed that when your typical Broadsheep reader is not preoccupied with renewing their membership of MENSA, or re-designing the billiard room of their picturesque manor house in the Dordogne, there is nothing they enjoy more than a brain-teaser to keep the little grey cells in tiptop order. So here goes... What, Dear Reader, do the following items have in common - wallpaper, Mills and Boon novels, a 75” television in the lounge, peat-smoked salmon from the Western Isles, a Robin Reliant and finally, the Dictionary of National Biography? Yes, you’ve got it: they are all social ‘markers’. They reveal much about the person who owns these items. You can tell a lot about someone from their choice of wallpaper, or the novels they read, etc. [By the way, no self-respecting Broadsheep reader, even one with a 75” television, would ever admit to having a lounge. They would have a sitting-room.] Which brings me, at last, to today’s conversation-piece: embarrassment. My claim is that you can tell a lot about somebody by seeing what embarrasses them, and even more by seeing what does not. Furthermore, a strong case could be made that embarrassment also sheds light on humanity as a whole, not just on individuals. The finest example of embarrassment I’ve ever been privileged to witness took place recently in a café in Aberystwyth. Not only did I witness it but stood in the middle of it, and with some trepidation.

In this particular eatery you have to go to the counter, choose what you want, and pay. Ahead of me in the queue was an an enormous woman. For whatever reason she was mega-obese. Behind me stood a young couple, the woman eyeing up a sumptuous Victoria sponge. The cake although as yet complete was already cut into over-generous slices. When the young man noticed what his partner was about to choose he announced - in a voice perhaps never intended to be a whisper - ‘My god, look at the size of that!’ Fearing for my personal safety my first reaction was to locate the door, in case a swift exit became prudent. ‘So what happened next?’, I hear you ask. Well, nothing happened. Nothing COULD happen. The obese woman turned towards the couple, but said nothing. She saw the huge slice of Victoria sponge and chose to come to the conclusion that the man was probably referring to the cake, rather than to her. But perhaps to both at the same time? Because of the uncertainty, silence was her only option. As for the man, every bone in his body wanted to assure the woman that he was, of

6

course, not referring to her, but to do so was impossible without giving further offence. So he too remained silent. Yes, it’s all too easy to cause embarrassment, as I know to my cost. At work one day, asking a female student, also significantly overweight, when the baby was due, was a mistake of the first order. There was no way out. And no useful way to apologise. Then at a bring-and-buy sale I tried to persuade a woman to buy the pair of boxing gloves on my stall. ‘You could sort out your husband with these, madam’, I suggested helpfully. No she couldn’t. He had died the week before. Again no way out. A man I know boasts that nothing, absolutely nothing, embarrasses him. He’s embarrassment-proof. He’s an adult, broad-minded, sophisticated, not to say arrogant. How could he possibly ever suffer from embarrassment? Well, imagine the following revealing if unlikely scenario: imagine the man is showing a visitor from another planet around our world. First they visit parts of Africa where the lack of clean water is killing thousands of children. Then the visitor is shown various areas of the Middle East torn apart by religious and political extremism. He asks next to be taken around those suburbs of London where the fabulously rich live in houses valued in tens of millions. Then they go to see camps full of refugees fleeing from all manner of ills in their war-torn homelands. He also asks to be told about Hiroshima. ‘But are you not embarrassed to show me these things?’ he asks. ‘Embarrassed? I’m not in the slightest embarrassed. Why should I be embarrassed? It’s not my fault’, the man retorts. Then the extra-terrestrial visitor delivers the coup de grâce: ‘Should you not be embarrassed at thinking that it’s NOT your fault?’ Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema MONEY MONSTER (15) Reflecting a system “rigged for the elite,” Jodie Foster’s first directorial outing since 2011’s THE BEAVER is indeed a powerful, but hugely enteraining denunciation of the blurred line between those who offer financial advice and those who profit from it. George Clooney is smarmy t.v. stockmarket guru, Lee Gates, interrupted by a furious, heavily armed young man, Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell, STARRED UP) storming into his studio demanding retribution for losing his savings following a Gates’ tip-off. Rather than shut down the show, Gates’ producer (Julia Roberts) keeps the cameras rolling and as the spellbinding drama unfolds in real time, unexpected empathy develops between the two men, fuelled by interventions from the slippery company boss (Dominic West, PRIDE) whose stock nosedived and his p.r. woman (Caitriona Balfe, t.v’s OUTLANDER). A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE (12) The final installment in Swedish auteur Roy Andersson’s trilogy on “what it means to be a human” is, as numerous awards attest, a laugh- or cry-out-loud masterpiece. Following two fairly hopeless travelling salesmen (Holger Andersson, Nils Westblom) peddling ‘novelty items’, we visit numerous tableau peopled by characters variously, often hilariously disconnected from any reality but their own. As ever, Andersson’s camera remains static and at a respectful distance from his subjects, his tones bathed in wan pastel colours – though less so than with his last, YOU, THE LIVING. Details only just in frame rivet our imagination, the plaintiff song of a bar owner chills our spines and diverse but interconnected themes including loneliness, financial insecurity and human survival somehow roll into one glorious celebration of meaningful absurdity.

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR (15) An unremarkable English couple holidaying in Morocco, Perry and Gail (Ewan McGregor and Naomie Harris, SKYFALL) accidentally befriend Dima (Stellan Skarsgård, BBCtv’s RIVER), a gregarious Russian businessman. When Dima pressures Perry to deliver potentially explosive information to M16, they enter a murky world where money-laundering and espionage intersect, propelling them on a journey involving Paris, the French Alps and unsavoury corners of corporate London, imperiling their lives at almost every turn. Director Susanna White (NANNY McPHEE RETURNS) brings an agreeable corkscrewing of tension to a taut screenplay by Hossein Amini (DRIVE) based on John le Carré’s best-selling novel which, on the back of BBCtv’s THE NIGHT MANAGER and 2014’s A MOST WANTED MAN, rewards our eager anticipation with brilliant performances, especially from Damian Lewis as an over-zealous spymaster.

A letter from Knighton Dear Editor, Thank you for giving us the opportunity as residents of Knighton to express our concerns about the recent review of the Red Lion by Mr Pernickety (May 2016). The review is in a fine tradition of neo colonialist travel writing, in the words of Paul Theroux ‘people .. who wish themselves on societies more fragile than their own .. who in the end do no more than celebrate their own security ..’ 1 Mr P describes Knighton in unflattering words ‘Poor old Knighton is an English town in Wales ...’ .. ‘here was a town abandoned by progress and struggling to find a rasion (sic) d’etre in the late 20th Century’. He continues to be critical about the architecture ‘only a few nooks and corners of pre Victorian charm remain’ and the residents, who according to him live in low rent housing. We do not even qualify for the category of ‘Ancient Marcher townships, in which old hippies choose to die’. Moving to the Red Lion, he describes it as ‘frankly, the exterior of the Red Lion is not promising, to the point that a former inmate of Wormwood Scrubs might have felt he was coming home’. Far from having no raison d’etre, according to Mr Pernickety’s youthful but no less pompous self, Knighton is a real Marches market town in the true sense of the term, not a town where its incomer population is at odds with its longstanding residents, unlike Mr P’s more favoured destinations in the area. Knighton has many assets – a thriving livestock market, community market, Community Centre, banks, many independent shops and cafes (including the excellent Prince and Pughs) an active community of artists, many people active

in the Labour Party, the Greens, Lib Dems, environment groups, two GP surgeries, a hospital, railway station, good sporting opportunities including a leisure centre, a primary school and of course our iconic clock tower. We have suffered greatly from the loss of major employers throughout the 90s and 00s but there is a growth of small businesses, and a determination for the town to thrive. Our general rating in Wales for deprivation shows we rank 1228 out of 1909 areas in Wales. (high score = least deprived).2 Mr P’s views about the buildings in Knighton are not shared by Richard Haslam3 who lists several interesting buildings or the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Buildings in Wales. We have Offas’s Dyke visible in the town, two castles, evidence of medieval buildings (often behind Victorian fronts) and several buildings of the Tudor and Georgian period. The Red Lion itself is an example of Victorian Welsh vernacular, where expensive brick and local stone was used together and there are many examples of this style throughout Wales. His views on Knighton are in direct contrast to those of Mike Parker ‘a lively attractive place’ 4 and a recent review in the Guardian.5 Are we Welsh or English? Most residents would probably paraphrase George Borrow and say they lived ‘neither in Wales nor England but in Radnorshire’. Whilst all the Marcher towns have identity problems, we are firmly in Wales. We have many keen Welsh learners and our turnout in Brecon and Radnorshire for the recent Welsh Assembly elections was the highest in Wales. We extend a warm invitation to Mr P and any other reader to come back to Knighton, to spend some time and money here, meet local people and have at least one excellent meal in the Red Lion, we will happily provide a tour guide. Yours sincerely, Ruth Forrester, Chris Plant, , Karen Plant, Michael Harding 1 Great Railway Bazaar p. 114 2 Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 3 The Buildings of Wales : Powys ed Richard Haslam 4 Rough Guide to Wales p.235 5 Let’s move to the Marches: ‘A magical patch straight out of Tolkien’

grass roots We Farmers “We farmers … what a high position we once held in this country. We and our profession have been the central theme of many poets … agriculture was considered the noblest of professions as the world was dependent on the farmer and his plough … but what is our status now?” T. ANAND RAJ, farmer. Farmers work with systems that are linked with place and season. The knowledge of local farmers is unique to a particular environment and continually revised through accumulated experience. From the dawn of agriculture this knowledge has passed and evolved, from generation to generation. Local farmers everywhere have knowledge about the climate, vegetation, animals and soils that repeatedly, in the absence of external pressures, results in multi-dimensional land use and production strategies which enable food self-sufficiency for the community. HEAT EXTREMES, WATER SCARCITY, INTERVENTION “In Maharashtra this year, the Godavari river in Nashik went dry. There is no water in Ramkund … in the town of Latur water scarcity is so severe that the district collector has imposed Section 144 and taken over 150 wells and tubewells near the city ... Water is being supplied by tankers after a water train brings water all the way from Kota. While the drinking water emergency will be addressed … what of the farmers?” Most of Maharashtra is plateau formed by lava millions of years ago. The major rivers and tributaries have carved river valleys across these plateau, but these rivers dry up during drought conditions. Inland the vast farming area is semi arid with scorching hot summer from March onwards, broken briefly and violently by monsoon in early June. The character of the monsoon, with its short spells of rainy weather and long dry breaks, results in floods, but especially in droughts and these are getting more extreme with climate change. This is the farming struggle in Maharashtra. WHEN THE CROPS FAIL “Farmers are struggling to repay even small loans of a few thousand rupees. Every time the creditor comes, we are put to shame… He shames our families and snatches our belongings. Unable to bear such insults, thousands of my people have committed suicide.” Maharashtra is experiencing a convergence of crises – on the one hand climate change is leading to prolonged episodes of intense heat leading to drought – on another there is no financial cushion for simple farming families if the crops fail and so the debt collectors move in. Farmers in Maharashtra are advised to borrow money and grow cash crops with a better return such as sugar cane and GM cotton, but there is reason to believe that these crops are less resistant to drought and quickly soak up precious water reserves, whereas the old staples such as Jowar (sorghum) have supported food and livelihood income for many generations. When the crops fail there is no way to pay back loans. In the last 20 years, nearly 300,000 of India’s farmers have ended their lives by drinking pesticides or by hanging themselves. Maharashtra state is the worst affected.

BRINGING IT HOME Farming in Britain is very different to India – but sometimes it is the same: It is working with conflicts between the weather, the times, the market, the cost of things and government policy. It is waking up in the morning and deciding, having studied the forecast for weeks, to cut the grass. It is praying that it won’t rain. It is praying that it will rain. And, as in Maharashtra, when things go wrong – really wrong - farming is hell. When Foot and Mouth Disease struck in Britain, not so long ago, that was hell. Carefully nurtured breeding stock was lost, on a vast scale. Generations of work disappeared. Animals starved, unable to be moved for fear of contamination and the farmer who threatened the Ministry vets with a shot gun? This story is still told in many a local pub. This is why I am excited to be talking to Roshni, a fellow writer from London. Roshni is a Samba drummer, Hip hop lover and brilliant copywriter from London. Her family originate from the farming communities of Maharashtra, just as my children were born to a farming community in Devon. We bear witness to the suffering of farming families in Maharashtra. Our dream is to go out there and hear from the farming families first hand, and, as writers, tell the stories. We note the velveteen rabbit rule – not real ‘til loved. We are starting to look at how to raise the money for this project. I’ll let you know what happens. Rachel, for Broad Sheep. Still writing. Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
