Meanwhile tourists are still flying into Rhodes while half the islands on fire, ditto in the Algarve and in nice, clean Sweden, helicopters have been carrying out portable loos full of shit after a stomach bug hit hikers half way up a Lapland mountain!

But never mind someone has an idea. It’s Guillermo Sohnlein the ill-fated Titanic submersible, OceanGate co-founder who is now aiming to send 1,000 humans to live in Venus’ atmosphere by 2050. He added that his goal of humans living in Venus is not just not motivational but aspirational. “I think it’s also very doable by 2050,” he says but his aim to send humans to Venus is not part of OceanGate, but his other company Humans2Venus of which he is a Founder and Chairman. You think I am taking the mickey but I am not. Just take a look at his website humans2venus.org Now tell me the world hasn’t gone completely nuts. Not content with fucking up this planet there is a whole gang of billionaires who can’t wait to get their hands on the rest of the solar system, but fear not Pete is here and …….. I have a plan.

Let’s imagine you live in - say Rhayader. Then you have probably seen enough Red Kites and reservoirs to last you a lifetime so the idea of the gritty urban lifestyle of say Leominster would be very appealing. You could spend a happy hour or two waiting to get to the till in Aldi and then go and get plastered for next to nothing in Wetherspoons before rushing home to feed their mangy cat. Meanwhile they would be in Rhayader going all “Hello birds, hello trees” while having to deal with two monosyllabic teenagers you (accidentally) left behind.

Or say you lived in the posh bit of Ledbury. You’ve probably never been to Wales so two weeks in Llandod could be a real eye opener. You could puzzle about the Llandegley International Airport signs, marvel at the real ales on offer at the tiny Arvon Ale House and perhaps buy something a bit stronger off a guy with a dog on a string in Tesco’s car park. Meanwhile the Llandodders could be catching up on a bit of poetry and buying some expensive, handmade chocolates.

The idea can’t fail plus it would take a bit of the heat off AirBnB for reducing the local’s housing stock and help to pay for my private jet so I can get to my Vietnamese sweatshop making ‘I HEART the Welsh Borders’ tee shirts a lot quicker.

The View from the Zoo

ASCINATING news from China. According to research at the Institute for Irrelevant Studies, of which I have the privilege of being the Principal, Angela the Sun Bear, who lives in a zoo in Hangzhou, is under suspicion of transspeciesism. This means that rather than being a sun bear from, er, wherever sun bears live, Angela is actually a small underpaid person in a bear suit. Nobody has yet ventured on a DNA test, but to the layman the bear’s extremely saggy bottom and habit of sitting on a boulder shaking its head and burying its face in its paws is enough of an indication. Plus, of course, Chinese zookeepers have form in this respect. Again according to our research, rather than go to the trouble and expense of hunting down live leopards many have found it it easier to paint spots on a dog; and a lion gawped at by millions of visitors to a zoo in one of the presumably less wellinformed parts of China turned out not to be a lion at all, but a golden retriever called Mao.

The first impulse of many is probably to laugh, and leap to the conclusion that this shortage of bears and leopards and so on is because most of them have been smothered in delicious sauces, garnished with bean sprouts and eaten at government banquets. Here at the Institute, though, we consider that animal substitution raises other questions, of an infinitely more sinister nature.

The theory that Covid began not with the roasting of an off pangolin but as an escape from a biological warfare laboratory - deliberate or not we do not know - is rapidly gaining traction. But China, we are told, is putting itself in a position to bring Western civilisation to a screeching halt by, for instance, selling us millions of cheap nasty electric cars that can be immobilised at the flick of a switch in Beijing, paralysing the roads of Britain.

We at the Institute, having taken a close look at several British politicians, have concluded that there are subtler factors at play. It is possible - nay, likely - that Chinese lab wizards, flushed with the success of brewing up Covid, have in fact been substituting animals for British politicians on overseas visits and sending them back to wreak havoc on the home front. A few examples. The fluffy hairdo, shambling gait and disorganised private life of the last Prime Minister is quite obviously calculated to disguise his true nature as a ravening wolverine. The dim fumblings, slow creeping gait and unshakeable prejudices of the last Leader of the Opposition make it evident that someone has sucked out his true DNA and substituted that of the Slow Loris, a nocturnal creature of antisocial tendencies whose fruit diet has translated into a love of jam making. As for the present Leader of the Opposition, his slab-sided face and authoritarian

tendencies suggest that he is in fact a mandrill, a member of the baboon family much given to hierarchical behaviour in the wild. Mandrills have blue bottoms, so this should be easy to confirm, though come to think of it rather you than me.

So what can be done about this shocking state of affairs, which is the only conceivable reason for Brexit, the decline of the NHS and the rest of the hideous catalogue of government failure and national decline over the last twenty years or so? The first thing to do, of course, is to get to the bottom of the problem, and not just with Keir the Mandrill. It is too late for the present lot; you only have to hear the baying frenzy of the House of Commons at Prime Minister’s Questions to realise that the place is already a zoo, and asking it to change would be like (literally, in some cases) asking turkeys to vote for Christmas. The best we can do is to ask all politicians returning from Chinese visits to submit to DNA tests, and try them with a banana, some minced beef or a handful of mealworms. The slightest hesitation disqualifies. It is time to let animals be animals. Politics is for humans.

Library Renewal

The Public Libraries Act of 1850 was the cornerstone which brought books (as well as newspapers and periodicals) to the masses. Encouraged by the Woolhope Naturalists Field Club (WNFC), Hereford wasn’t its usual tardy self where major social change was being advocated. The WNFC made a major contribution to the purchase of the Broad Street site and local architect F R Kempson won the commission. The building’s frontage has been described as Venetian Gothic, though Pevsner thought it ‘above its station’. Many visitors to Hereford’s Three Choirs Festival delight in the façade’s carved stone decorations of animals, plants and signs of the zodiac. Costing £7,600, it opened in 1874 with a commemoration service in Hereford Cathedral and fireworks on Castle Green. The Herefordshire-born architect was also responsible for St Paul’s, Tupsley and the restoration of Burton Court, Eardisland (good enough to be ranked by Simon Jenkins as one Britain’s 1000 Best Houses.

In 1912, as a result of a bequest, the Kempson building was extended into Aubrey Street; and in 1974 a new mezzanine Reference section was added, with generous spaces beneath for children’s books and activities. But now the Kempson building is to be transformed once again: into a City Museum & Art Gallery, while the counciloperated Lending & Reference services will be relocated in a specially-converted two-storey unit in the council-owned Maylord Centre. Both commissions have been entrusted to Architype, with funding totalling £21.5-million coming from Michael Gove’s Levelling Up ministry. In 2015 the Twyford-based practice completed the council’s £8-million Archive & Resource Centre at Rotherwas.

Incorporating a state-of-the-art library complex into the fabric of a modern city centre shopping complex makes a lot of sense socially; in fact a good deal more sense than letting vacant units to vaping traders or Pound Saver shops. Ample car parking (including disabled spaces) is normally available and - in the case of the Maylord Centre – there are lifts, escalators, toilets and bus set-down points.

The content of the old City Library’s museum always seemed rather lack lustre, with dutiful groups of school children being lead reluctantly between glass cabinets of Roman coins and bee combs. Two years ago it briefly sprang into life with a colourful celebration of the city’s May Fair.

In the spaces freed up by the lending / reference sections’ move to the Maylord Centre, there are a host of significant historical events and individuals which might be celebrated, either two-dimensionally or with three-dimensional models. The Rotherwas munitions factories’ women workers (aka the Canary Girls); the epic construction of the Dinmore Hill railway tunnels; the Eye Saxon Horde, the Roman settlement of Magna at Kenchester and the recent archaeological discoveries at Sutton Walls; Ley Line pioneer Alfred Watkins’ theories, which he plotted across the Herefordshire countryside; Sir Edward Elgar, Nel Gwynne, Thomas Traherne and Fred Bulmer; Powell & Moya’s iconic 1951 Festival of Britain Skylon sculpture, fabricated by Painter Brothers of Hereford; Violette Szabo, WWII’s most highly decorated female combatant, long overdue civic recognition in the city; and Sir Frank Whittle, whose pioneering work with Holmer-based Wiggins Special Metals’ was instrumental in developing the jet engine. A full-sized replica of Whittle’s W1 prototype was once on show in the main Reception at

Holmer, but has since disappeared. One of the imaginative proposals for the re-configured Broad Street building is to add a roof-top viewing gallery, looking south towards the Dinedor Iron Age hill fort, starting point of the Rotherwas Ribbon, the 4000-year-old ceremonial pathway that led down to the banks of the Wye, unearthed in 2010.

The cost of the city’s new Transport Hub (see BS April 2033) the Maylord Library and the Museum’s transformation totals an eye-watering £31.5M. Under the terms of all Levelling-Up Ministry grants, every penny must be spent by the time of the next General Election.

Glass impasse

The Courtyard’s major Arts Council-funded refurbishment was completed last year. The remodelled space achieved an enlarged foyer; a gifts bazaar adjoining the box office and an expanded and much improved café area. One of this arts centre’s proudest achievements has been to establish the annual Borderlines Film Festival as the UK’s most popular rural film festival.

As with the 1998 competition-winning design, the refurbishment was overseen by Birmingham-based Glen Howells Architects. What had not been anticipated, however, was the discovery of serious structural defects in the two-storey glass curtain walling which covers the arts complex’s south-facing façade, adjacent to the landscaped area alongside Penhaligon Way. Emergency safety repairs (costing over £100,000) were carried out, but the cost of installing new glass curtain walling is estimated at more than £½-million – which the Courtyard doesn’t have, having blown the whole of the Arts Council grant on the refurbishment. Twenty-five years is no time at all in the lifespan of a robust curtain wall system. Though it has been around for more than a century, glass curtain wall cladding is something of a rarity in Hereford: parts of British Land’s Old Market used it, as well as the Asda superstore. Oriel Chambers, Liverpool (1864) is probably the country’s oldest surviving example and still in robust condition. And to the best of my knowledge none of the curtain walling on the many Chicago office blocks Mies and SOM built has yet fallen out.

With stony-faced freeholder Hereford Council (already itself in deepest doo-doo, facing urgent refurbishment works to both its Town Hall and the Shire Hall) claiming that under the full repairing lease it was granted in 1998, the Courtyard must pick up the bill. Who will blink first? Nick Jones

IT’S A SMOKIN’ SUMMER

Slim pickings this September although I did speak a bit too soon citing INDIANA JONES and MISSION IMPROBABLE as the summer blockbusters because that was before BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER came along, both of which I highly recommend although the latter is 30 mins too long and the former should not be seen by men unsure of their masculinity. However one new indie release I must firmly endorse is SMOKING CAUSES COUGHING, French auteur Quentin Dupieux’s follow-up to DEERSKIN, a big fave of mine in 2019. Writer/director Dupieux deals in agreeably weird plots – in this case a group of Lycra-suited faux super-heroes whose resolve to save the world, or at least France, from equally improbable rubber-clad monsters is wilting. From the bed he shares with scantily clad ‘models’ their boss, a lecherous, drooling, life-size fox, instructs them to go on a team-building retreat thus providing numerous opportunities for Dupieux to apply his darkly hilarious narrative humour. Tasteless of course, but huge fun. Mark Williams

The White Horse Inn, Clun

TO the inhabitants of the small town of Clun - Mr Pernickety conjectures - it is just a place where they live, a distinct cluster of dwellings and people subject to the random acts of kindness, petty envies, mutual solicitudes and casual calumnies to be found in any similar-sized settlement anywhere in the world. A long time ago, before Shropshire County Council morphed into a gang of self-aggrandising, inept property speculators of dubious motivation, Clun was a proper town, with butchers, banks, car dealers, library and timely bus services to Knighton, Bishops Castle and cities beyond, all now heavily pruned to reflect the inconveniences of modern life.

Nevertheless, to the visitor, especially the English visitor, Clun exerts a particular nostalgic charm with a gentle air of pre-war peace about it, where the young River Clun flows beneath the arches of its beautiful 15th century pack-horse bridge. (On this bridge in early May each year, the Ice Maiden of Winter, somewhat tardily slugs it out with the Green Man of Spring, an unequal, patriarchal ritual in which the male Spring always wins.)

The dwellings of which the town mainly consists are of stone or pleasingly painted render, interspersed with a few small shops – a hardware store with a window display of rat poison and besom brooms, craft centres reflecting the inescapable wackiness of the towns of the Marches, and shops selling walking sticks and ‘gifts’.

By the bridge Mr P found The Postcard Café serving what looked and smelled like top-notch cakes, soup and savouries on rustic tables set amid rails of vintage clothing and shelves of ancient books and tasteful brocante. Mr Pernickety will surely return to review it for his readers. There appear to be just two pubs in the town. There was a third, a large establishment dominating the centre called The Buffalo which was bought some time ago by owners who evidently chose to best protect their investment by leaving the place empty, providing nothing to the town in terms of amenity or housing for the last fifteen years or so. You have to admire them; it takes true bollocks to be that brazenly greedy and unconcerned for your fellow men.

Of those that remain, The Sun is a bright atmospheric place, warmly decorated with a stylish but grounded feel to it. At the moment it serves only pork pies and crisps and what-not, but Mr P was told it will offer full meals again soon. The other pub, The White Horse Inn is a thoroughly honest earthy establishment which serves its local community as well as curious visitors without any compromise of its core function. Mr P, his Lovely Companion, his brother, a grizzled retired BBC broadcaster, and his wife had booked a table for Sunday lunch.

They arrived at the pub (which brews its own distinctive ales) to find it packed, being exactly what Mr

Pernickety believes a pub should be – a place of meeting, exchanging news and humour, sharing meals and enjoying truly good ales. Mr P’s party was shown to a small table in a light dining-room which, in a good way, had absolutely nothing stylish about it. The floors were were faux woodgrain, walls plain and pale with nothing hanging on them that anyone would want to look at, beyond a few encouraging certificates of excellence from the West Shropshire branch of CAMRA. Lighting was basic and music non-existent. This old fashioned, genuine boozer simply doesn’t do pretension. Mr P’s party shared starters of heavily breadcrumbed mushrooms and prawns – unsophisticated, and very munchable.

Two of the party had roast pork, one had roast beef, and the LC who claimed her sense of taste was deeply compromised by some seasonal ailment, ordered ham, egg’n’chips, because, she said. she liked the texture of the chips. The Grizzled Bro said that his beef, although not as rare as he had hoped, was by no means overcooked and was a good example of this staple Sunday fare. The pork eaters both enjoyed their meat, served with stuffing and good, hard crackling. Yorkshire puds were served indiscriminately, although Mr P considers that they only belong to beef. Similarly, the beef came with a ball of stuffing which really belonged to the pork. The vegetables, red cabbage (good), carrots and broccoli weren’t overcooked, tasting firm and fresh. Mr P and the GB drank good Chilean merlot, and the sis-in-law liked her small glass of pinot grigio. They were all too full for pudding, but Mr P can’t imagine they would have been bad.

All round they’d enjoyed a more than satisfactory English Sunday lunch. The White Horse doesn’t remotely pretend to be a gastro-venue for Kensington escapees slumming in the sticks. It aims to serve good English cuisine, which it certainly does. Only when Costa Blanca Paella and Jamaican Goat Curry appear on the menu will Mr P be on his guard.

SIMON THE PIPER Simon is a full-time, professional Highland Piper and he has been playing for over 20 years. He is the appointed Civic Piper to the City of Herefordpossibly the only civic bagpiper in the UK and is also the Pipe Sargeant for the Henllys Pipes and Drums in South Wales. Simon has performed at many high-profile functions in and around Herefordshire and these include the opening ceremony for the Knife Angel’s visit to Hereford Cathedral in 2021 and recently appeared on TV piping around the county for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our dismal summer - and the failing Gulf Stream

AROUND 50 years ago, my classmates and I had it drummed into us that our climate in Britain is the product of prevailing south-westerly winds and of the Gulf Stream, a current that had long brought warm water from the tropics to north-west Europe. But today those “warm wet south-westerlies” are a fading memory.

It’s quite true that Broad Sheep country had some warm sunny weather two or three months ago. But from then on, up until early August, as I write, it’s often been grey, damp, and chilly. I keep thinking it must now be October or November, so long is it since we felt a ray of warm sunshine.

Again, anything resembling a prevailing wind seems to be a thing of the past. Nowadays the wind comes from somewhere different almost every day of the week. Is it the south-westerly winds that are meant to bring the warmth and wetness here? Or the Gulf Stream? It doesn’t much matter! They have both gone on the blink.

The Gulf Stream is part of something called AMOC –the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. For our purposes here in Britain, it and the Gulf Stream can be considered as more or less the same thing. Whatever we call these currents, in the age of sailing ships skippers knew about them.

A Spanish navigator, Juan Ponce de Leon, understood them back in the early 1500s. And they were so important that in the 1700s Benjamin Franklin, that key figure in the birth of the USA, actually drew a chart showing how they worked. Who knew that? Wow, that guy Franklin really was multi-skilled!

After Franklin and his chart, it took another couple of centuries for researchers to be able to record what the Gulf Stream was doing on a daily basis. By 2004 scientists had set up an array of devices across the Atlantic to do the measurements.

This rather new technology has confirmed that the Gulf Stream is gradually weakening and that it is possible that, sometime in the coming decades, it could reach a tipping point where it switches off altogether.

Indeed, a team of geographers at University College London, led by Dr David Thornalley, have concluded that the Gulf Steam System, or AMOC, is now weaker than at any time over the last 1000 years.

They find that these warming currents have been slowing down and declining since the end of the Little Ice Age. And when did the Little Ice Age end? Only a few weeks ago, if you ask me! Actually, it is said to have ended in the mid to late 19th century. But could we see another Little Ice Age? If the Gulf Stream were to collapse, another Ice Age could not be ruled out!

There weren’t cameras around for most of the last Little Ice Age, but in the 17th century there were artists who painted vivid scenes on the frozen Thames, with firm

ice across the river, for several weeks at a time, providing a solid base for markets to be held on the Thames, from London Bridge as far upstream as Vauxhall.

The diarist John Evelyn recorded in 1684 a river covered by “sleds, sliding with skates, and “…horse and coach races, puppet plays and interludes…” So, while painters and diarists tell us what that Little Ice Age was like, how do we know when the Gulf Stream began to slow down?

In the 20th century scientists already had a good idea, through analysing tree rings, ice cores, ocean sediments and so on. And from 2004 onwards a new system of floating devices in the Atlantic has provided a direct up-to-the-minute record of changes in the Gulf Stream.

Announcing the UCL study of 2021, Dr Thornalley stated that the warming of the surface waters of the Atlantic in the 20th century was unprecedented in the last 10,000 years. He underlined that “…whilst climate modelling has long predicted a slowdown of the AMOC (including the Gulf Stream), as a result of human-induced warming, this study shows the increasing evidence in support of the modern Atlantic Ocean undergoing unprecedented changes….”

Information about the measurement of change in the Atlantic has been published by the Natural Environment Research Council. It warns that “…if the AMOC (including the Gulf Stream) were to shut down, winter temperatures in northwest Europe might fall by as much as 4 degrees C over a period of only 10 years. Once past its tippingpoint, the AMOC might take 100 years or more to recover.”

Brrrrr! The scientists have little idea when such a collapse might happen. But the fact that they are openly discussing it is, in itself, worrying. However, don’t let’s be alarmist! I am certainly not predicting a New Ice Age. Not firmly predicting it….At least, not before next year.
