Every July the UPTON BLUES FESTIVAL is a weekend of live music that fills the streets of Upton upon Severn, with three Main Stages, an exclusive Campers Campsite Stage and 12 independent venues. We’ll take you from Blues Rock to Bluegrass, Country Blues to New Orleans, Acoustic to Soul with a Sunday gospel choir all thrown into a single long weekend – 150 bands and every performance is FREE! With three official stages and twelve pubs/venues taking part, the whole of Upton throngs with live music lovers.
In July you might, like me, have read adverts like this for the Upton Blues Festival. It’s been going since 2002 and although I am not absolutely sure I want to hear 150 blues bands in one sitting I was intrigued enough to want a look and the news that it was all free was a major attraction for me and probably a lot of other cash strapped punters. First, I needed to get there and guessing that parking was going to be a major hassle, I drove towards the nearest village, to park the motor and transfer to two wheels but just before I got to Welland I was surprised to find myself on Castlemorten Common, scene of the infamous rave in 1992. What started out as a small free festival for travellers not only went down in history as the biggest illegal rave ever held in the UK, but resulted in a trial costing £4m and the passing of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. The resulting publicity also had drastic consequences for the “alternative” lifestyle of the so-called New Age Travellers who started the event and for the underground rave movement who gate-crashed it. Anyway it seemed like an auspicious place to leave the motor and head off to a massive, free, blues festival!

maybe at a big anti-war demo.
After a quick blast down the lanes I hit the first signs of humanity on the move. Cars parked on the verges, hundreds of no parking bollards and then finally a roadblock to sort out the visitors from the residents and the performers trying to get to their gigs. I locked my bike to a park fence and dived in. The first two venues I spotted were the Meadow Stage (a sort of mini Hyde Park), which was featuring The Wldflwrs playing really convincing covers of The Band’s greatest hits to a large appreciative audience sat in the sunshine. Nearby a large church was home to the Acoustic Roots stage where a couple of hundred people were sat listening to a skillful dobro guitarist. Then I headed down the packed street to the centre of town and the seething mass of humanity that is the beating heart of the festival. The last 50yds from the Anchor Inn to the Riverside Stage is just one seething mass of humanity. The pubs are all full and mostly have a blues band playing. All the concession stands have queues and I don’t think I have ever seen so many people crammed into a small street except
I admit, I didn’t last for long but it was mind blowing that this little festival, conceived round a pub table by 6 people who all threw in a £10 to set the ball rolling in 2001, had grown into this monster. Still, I was very confused by the economics of the event. How did they manage to pay for it all and keep it free? I was even more surprised, when I got home and started poking about on the internet, to discover they are a charity and not only do they run the festival at a profit but local organisations can apply to them for small grants to support other projects! Eventually, I phoned the director Grahame Bunn who explained that the combination of parking fees, camping fees , profits from their bars etc etc managed to make it all possible. I suspect that a lot of volunteer local labour and some very astute book-keeping must also play a part!
I cycled back through the lanes and by chance discovered two miles down the road in a large 15 acre field another festival was going on! MABFEST. “Join us for a three-day celebration of psychedelic sounds and dub rhythms amidst the stunning backdrop of the Malvern Hills. Featuring legendary acts along with a host of other dynamic performers, plus workshops, a Jam tent welcoming bands and festival goers to jam together, festival cafe, bar and spaces to chill out.” Yes a proper old school hippy festival featuring such legendary bands as Kangaroo Moon, Ozric Tentacles and Zion Train. There must be something in the water round there – of course it’s the Malvern Water! Elizabeth I drank it in public in the 16th century; Queen Victoria refused to travel without it. Cheers.

Between the thought and the action falls the shadow
Words words words.
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a government report.
(Hamlet, TS Eliot)
Most of the necessities of life that used to require physical effort have been taken over by machines, so if we wanted to we could almost reduce the function of our bodies to a support system for our brains, like *Winnie in Beckett’s play *Happy Days, buried up to her waist in the encroaching sand and then up to her neck by the end. The necessities of life no longer keep us grounded in physical activity, though many people in their spare time still satisfy the left-over instinct for exercise through outdoor activity, sport and the gym. What we do at work is less and less about hand-eye coordination and the subtle combined use of mind and body, of momentum and balance and craft skills; it’s more and more about providing digital services through virtual media - words, money, maths and visuals, all of which are speculative illusions and out-oftime non-physical re-presentations of maybe real things, but not the thing itself, addictively filling the headspace available. Add to that, almost every function in the home has been automated, while transport and travel is rapidly becoming effortless. We neither know nor care about what is happening off-screen in the here and now, let alone being competent to do anything about it. We could just exist as talking heads on prosthetic bodies, controlling narrowing horizons in our heads and in cyberspace with keyboard skills, bespoke stimulants, evacuants and extra sensors, stuck in a flat on the nth floor of a dystopian future - if only the climate would keep its cool.
Historically the centres of consciousness seemed to be the heart and/or other centres or chakras up and down the body, but now they’ve all migrated to our heads, and coalesced behind our eyes. Our consciousness is taken up with our abstract codes for reality, with disengaged morals, with theories and possibilities, with words instead of muscular actions. The Cartesian split has come true and our European minds are not only separated from our bodies but also from the natural world, which is buried in a mass grave beneath the tarmac and concrete where most of us now live - in the towns - despite Nature being the ultimate evolutionary provider of everything, physically and psychologically. To lose touch with our constitution is not wise.
We have lost touch with our own nature but also with Nature. The biodiversity and climate crises don’t affect us in the UK in any obvious day-to-day way and so we have little reason to mitigate them, and certainly no idea how. “What can I do?” you might say with a despairing gesture. The twin threats work on a time scale of decades; they creep up on us. Occasionally there’s a spectacular event but it comes across on-screen as sci-fi, or a disaster movie. It’s a media storm of words and diagrams, apocalyptic scenes and unprofitable guilt which is happening to someone else - it’s the News or just another beautiful Attenborough
documentary. Having green sympathies and out-of-focus opinions, complaining, curating a low carbon footprint and taking part in reactive protest is not enough. Relying on hi tech to for instance sequester the CO2 is la-la-land. There’s a commercial market for solar, wind, nuclear and EVs, but there isn’t a plausible market for CO2. There aren’t that many fizzy drinks in the Universe. The carbon crisis is a large scale nightmare requiring big business and government action. Give up? No! It’s still possible to improve your local biodiversity and mitigate nearby pollution and flooding in person. To make a difference. “What can I do?” has several answers; the simplest is to plant trees. A maturing Oak has 2,300 co-dependant species. A shelter belt percolates 50 time as much rain to the deep aquifers as a sheep field. Trees not only help to rebalance the planet, planting them helps to rebalance your thoughts with your actions. Don’t be a *Winnie. Staying indoors, staring at a screen and feeling depressed, then throwing orange paint at carbon neutral pictures won’t save you or the planet. And what did the pre-petro-chemical era *Rokeby Venus (c.1650) ever do to you? Positive restorative action is within the ability of most individuals. Don’t be defined by your enemies’ agenda - you’ll always be returning serve, playing with the black pieces. The Iraq war protest, the largest ever in British history had nil effect. Instead, put your body on the line in a different way and ground yourself - for instance - by putting trees in the ground. Change yourself, change the planet.
PS. Declaration of Interest: For those within reach of the Brecon Beacons you could do worse than contacting www. stumpupfortrees.org who have grown, planted and maintain 440,000 broadleaved trees so far, since 2020, largely using volunteer labour. I am a trustee.
*PPS. Excuse. In the past referring to Happy days and the Rokeby Venus might have implied that I snobby H.C. know things you don’t. However these are good things to know about and its 5 secs away on your digital device to know more about them than I do. Hugh Colvin
Dear Broad Sheep,
I wish to write a response to ‘PetrusOnus’’ article in the August edition of the magazine and wondered if this may be passed on to him or her.
I agreed with a lot of what was written in the article ‘Sacrifices to the Sun’, about everyone taking responsibility for what we can each do. We are a family who camps, cycles, have never taken our children on a foreign holiday, still driving cars which although are diesel are both over 20 years old to reduce the waste of scrappage (I remain unconvinced by electric cars) and we only shop in charity shops or second hand from Vinted. But I feel an extremely important point needs to be made...
Firstly your knowledge of the inefficiencies of wind farms and the resulting pylons needs to be widened. At their best they work 30% of the time, with a 25 year life expectancy and the farm planned for Radnor Forest would see 42,000 tonnes of concrete poured into the ancient hills never to be removed. It is simply not nimbyism to not want 31 turbines at 220m high with a constant whirring and shadow flicker from the blades across your house, let alone the visual impact. To simply say people are grumbling is quite frankly disrespectful to those fighting to keep hillsides, tourism and rural areas free of industrialisation. Perhaps you may like to not jump on Ed Milliband’s faux green bandwagon and do some research into wind farms (and this email comes from a Labour voter I assure you, and shock horror Guardian reader so just the demographic that Broad Sheep likes!). Re-think is a fantastic group of campaigners - do please have look at their literature and please read articles by journalist ‘Jac o the North’... you will have your eyes opened on just how corrupt the murky wind farm industry really is.
A small suggestion for a further article may be looking at the unregulated world of mobile home sites, many in the Marches; as one caravan park opposite New Radnor goes from 12 to 50 static caravans purely for holiday purposes. Not helping our housing crisis at all which you so rightly wrote about in the article.
Many thanks for reading this.
Dear Sophie,
Sophie Hodge
In general, I accept that there is a downside to wind generation even to the point where, in an earlier, unenlightened time of my life, I campaigned against the ugliness of a proposed wind farm in the hills west of Welshpool. It seems to me that this unsightliness is your principal objection, to which, like anyone else with a case to make, you have attached every imaginable argument and negative aspect of their construction and operation. I note however that, unlike your ally in this cause, Donald Trump, you do not cite the killing of birds (perhaps because you appreciate that if the anti-birddeath card were to be fully played, it would lead to the destruction of all the nation’s domestic cats, which kill millions more birds than wind-farms do.)
There are also anomalies in your case, where you state that turbines create a “constant whirring and shadow flicker from the blades across your house” while you also claim, “At their best they work 30% of the time.”
You may consider that the issues involved in this debate are finely balanced, but global warming is real and it will have a finite conclusion if it isn’t somehow reversed. The final question is: Do we want a world slightly blemished by the presence of wind-turbines and pylons? Or do we want a world where there are no tourists left alive to care about the scenery?
PetrusOnus
Thank you for taking the trouble to read and comment on my last piece.
I will concede at once that I am not an expert in comparative energy generation, and I am also aware that in this field, as in every human endeavour where large sums of money are involved, there is a recognisable element of corruption. But all the statistics I’ve seen show that energy generated by wind turbine, over its 20/25 year life-cycle produces immeasurably less CO2 per KWh than natural gas. Nuclear is far cleaner in this respect than gas, but as a Guardian-reading, Labour voter, I doubt you would support its use any more than I would.

A sort-of re-make of the 1989 Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner comedy drama, War Of The Roses, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman as the angst driven couple whose seemingly charmed union hurtles downhill as he loses his architect’s job whilst her chef’s career rapidly ascends. Scripted by Warren Adler (who wrote the book on which it’s based) and Tony McNamara (who penned another great Coleman vehicle, The Favourite), it has some great one-liners, e.g. ‘Your capacity for need is bottomless’ and never a dull moment courtesy of Jay Roach, best known for his 2019 hit, Bombshell which only occasionally resorts to some admittedly hilarious slapstick. There are also strong supporting roles, most especially for the ever-reliable Alison Janney as Mrs Rose’s acerbic lawyer (and her dog!), played by Danny Devito in the original, and scene spotters may recognise many of the locations in and around Devon’s Salcombe Bay. All in all, a hoot.

The now commonplace but believe me, unsatisfactory world of online dating is the creation of Korean writer/director Celine Song whose last film, Past Lives had a weightier take on modern romance. Set in Manhattan where competitiveness is the norm, Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey, A Bigger Splash) plays Lucy, star negotiator of an upscale agency combining online with dating husbandry (sic) where we find highly groomed, dissatisfied, and morally disagreeable 30-somethings who basically want tall, slim, rich partners for whom marriage is a rarely achieved goal. Lucy herself leads a loveless existence until she meets Harry, brother of the groom at one of those weddings, (Pedro Pascal – a rather worrying doppelganger for a young Burt Reynolds) awkwardly coinciding with the re-appearance of penniless John, an ex– (Chris Evans, Spiderman) who she still has feelings for. Song, who once worked for a dating agency, knows the territory and turns it into a highly entertaining rom-com with added emotional depth.

Imagine a dystopian future heralding the end of the world – massive earthquakes, wildfires, mass starvation and worst of all, wobbly internet – and you’ve got the basis for horror-meister Mike Flanagan’s version of one of Steven King’s less frightmarish novels. But wait, billboards and T.V. ads saying ‘Thanks Chuck!’ are also appearing all over the place and this is all actually the finale episode in the life of bank employee Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston, best known for T.V’s The Night Manager) but kicks off the film, followed by two earlier acts showing Chuck’s life from childhood onwards. It’s a mischievous, occasionally confusing conceit but writer/ director Flanagan and an inspired cast including Star Wars’ Mark Hamill as Chuck’s grandad and Karen Gillan (Guardians Of The Galaxy) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Triple 9) as a separated couple who get back together in the face of global meltdown pull it off, but Hiddleston is the real star, especially when he’s bizarrely dancing up a storm!

FROM time to time in his role as gastro-tipster to the readers of the Woolly Organ, Mr Pernickety relishes the prospect of setting out to eat in a place where he is guaranteed outstanding nourishment. Finding himself in need of a lift after an especially gloomy medical procedure, he decided to ask his old friends, a pair of retired (though not retiring) Opera Singers to join him and his Lovely Companion for lunch at the Cider Barn, a couple of miles south of Pembridge on a lane that snakes prettily down towards Weobley. Mr P had eaten at the Cider Barn only a few times since he reviewed it in 2014, when he gave it a warm, enthusiastic write-up, which ended “… and Mr Pernickety truly hopes that, notwithstanding the lovely but hard-to-find location of the Cider Barn, Sophie Griffiths-Goddard (the Chef) will prosper as she should.”
In the decade since, Sophie Griffiths-Goddard, then a twenty-four year old, qualified doctor, is still in business and has become Sophie Bowenwhile the restaurant, despite being more-or-less in the middle of nowhere, has been notably successful and is regularly fully booked. Sophie’s culinary reputation has also grown exactly as Mr P had predicted.
This time he found himself drooling at the thought of eating there again, and he was confident his guests, enthusiastic gourmets who didn’t know the restaurant, would love it too. The OS’s, a tenor, whose voice with the richness of soft fruit has filled cavernous opera houses from Sydney to New York, and his soprano spouse have shown Mr P and the LC some fine hospitality in the past, for the Soprano is an inspired cook herself, This was a chance to reciprocate.
Besides, the Tenor, with thespian credentials grounded in the RSC, is well-stocked with enough scurrilous theatre tales (along with a range of opinions as combative as Mr P’s own) to fill several hours at the dining table.
The restaurant, as its name suggests, is housed in a fine old timber-framed building with stone footings, set in a peacefully, isolated meadow behind the old Dunkertons’ Cider mill. The Barn was packed, and as warm and welcoming as ever. Mr P and his guests were offered a glass of cider or apple juice as soon as they walked in, especially welcome on a hot day. They were shown to a generous table by a window with a good view of the meadow.
In his previous review Mr P had cavilled a little about the rowdiness of the place, but the issue had not been addressed. It was clear that quiet, nuanced conversation wasn’t going to be easy. As Mr P has frequently advised in these circumstances, some napery, wall-hangings and flat-weave rugs on the open floors would improve the acoustics.
When the menu arrived, Mr P was a tad deflated to find that it was based on traditional Sunday Lunch, somewhat precluding some of Sophie’s more adventurous flights. Nevertheless there were interesting starters. The LC chose Salmon Rilette. She especially liked the bite and contrast of citrus purée and toasted linseed. The Soprano described her Carrot and Orange Velouté as deliciously smooth, the pork and leek croquettes that came with it as slightly over cooked on the outside, but tasty.
The Tenor’s Pork and Pistachio Terrine with Mushroom Duxelle was “Very fruity,” he said, smacking his lips. Mr P loved his Summer Salad with Pine Nut Ssamjang and lovely crunchy Potato Tuile - a super combination of unexpected flavours. Mr P was delighted to see his guests so happy with what they had eaten; lunch had got off to a good start.
For most country restaurants, “Sunday Lunch” is the week’s banker, and that means a specific offering – the reason the French call the British the “Rosbifs.” The chef at the Cider Barn knows the punters want this traditional fayre, but she also seeks to put her own stamp on it - a potential risk in an old-fashioned endroit like Herefordshire.
However, Mr P judged that she pulled it off. He had Free range chicken breast with raisin and seed stuffing and chive emulsion adding deliciously unusual overtones, and succulent spicy veg. He ate this with a glass of strong Pinot Noir, of whose origins he failed to take a note, supplied by John Villar. The LC and the Tenor enjoyed their Roast Shoulder of Pork lifted by a fine caramelised apple sauce. The Tenor extended the apple connection by drinking a glass of Dunkerton’s dry cider with it. The Soprano went off-piste with roast mullet and anchovy emulsion. She loved its honest freshness and crispy skin.
Mr P and the Tenor wanted Lemon Meringue pie for dessert, but were offered a polenta alternative, which was dry and didn’t really work for either of them, while the LC happily gobbled up an Eton Mess.
Overall, lunch at the Cider Barn was well up to Mr P’s high expectations, with service that was impeccable and charming. Next time, though, he’ll go for dinner to enjoy a good run at the full gamut of Sophie’s inventiveness. Mr Pernickety

IT is now over 30 years since, in England, the water industry was privatised. And, in all that time since the sell-off, the water companies have been allowed to get away with a crippling failure to invest, and a failure to carry out even the bare minimum of measures to prevent sewage spillage and the despoliation of our waterways.
Back in the 1990s, publicly owned utilities were being sold off at breakneck speed. And many people, seeing the shares up for sale, were only too keen to get their hands on them. If one privatised outfit did not prosper, they reckoned, you could buy into another. So, gas and electricity were duly flogged off. And some bright sparks in government thought that it would make sense to sell water off as well. When privatisation was inflicted on much of Britain, Wales was somehow spared, due to the foresight of its politicians, it seems.
In the last few years water users in England have had to watch helplessly as nearly all the rivers and waterways have been fouled and polluted by sewage. The sanctions available to discipline the polluters have been minimal, not least because the funding of the regulator, the Environment Agency, was viciously cut back in real terms under a decade and half of Tory rule.
Nearly 20 years ago, back in 2006, a research team led by Professor David Hall at the University of Greenwich judged that, “… the idea that a privatised water system can deliver new capital from shareholders for investment is a dangerous illusion: it does not happen.”
And, now, in the mid-2020s, the Greenwich team are no less critical. “After 33 years when the private owners have been allowed to take so much money out of the system,” they say, “it is not plausible to argue that there can be some ‘better’ regulation that will transform this situation. A rapid transition to public ownership is needed to end the large-scale extraction of money, as well as providing long-term advantages of democratic oversight and transparency.”
The Greenwich academics have concluded that privatisation, instead of supplying extra capital, allowed shareholders, over 33 years, to extract tens of billions of pounds. “The shareholders …decided to take out dividends with a cumulated real value of £72.9 billion, over 10 times the value of earnings retained on the balance sheet.”
Last year the Guardian judged that private sector provision of water services in England is an oddity in the world. Nine out of ten countries, it said, run state-owned water operations. In Europe, it found that England was the only nation to have sold its water resources – including pipes, reservoirs, boreholes and treatment plants – to private owners, mostly a collection of sovereign wealth, infrastructure and pension funds.
It argued that the decision to put water – a natural monopoly - in private hands, defied the Thatcherite logic of competition and efficiency. “There was never any possibility of pitting rival companies against each other to raise standards. No other water supply is competing for a household’s business.”
An independent commission of academic experts on the water industry in England has recently concluded that, England should now follow the Welsh model of ownership. The team refer to a wide-ranging people’s commission on water arguing that “…public ownership of the water industry in England and Wales is the best way to cut bills, to reduce pollution, and to stimulate investment in repairing infrastructure.”
One of the academics, Ewen McGaughey, of King’s College London, has said, “We all want clean water. And in the latest YouGov poll 82% of the British public said that we should bring our water into public ownership. We should move to a new, modern, public water system because this is the best way to cut bills, stop pollution, invest in repairs and give everyone a voice. We can have clean water or privatised water, but we can’t have both.”
An official inquiry into the water sector, headed by Sir Jon Cunliffe, was, perversely, barred by ministers from considering public ownership. It also called for the regulator OFWAT to be junked and for big rises in water bills for the rest of this decade. In the wake of that report, environment secretary, Steve Reed, sided with Cunliffe on ditching OFWAT, but was vague about how to replace it. For now, he and Keir Starmer will doubtless heap blame on the water industry and on the previous government.
In July, the environmental campaigner, Feargal Sharkey, gave vent to his contempt for the government for its lack of action on the water industry during its first year in power. He too called for environment secretary Steve Reed to go. Sharkey alleged that the industry’s record was a story of corporate greed, manipulation, and profiteering. Hands up, anyone who disagrees!
