The Voice Choice
THINK I must have been bitten by a choir when I was at school because apart from Ladyship Black Mambazo and Sweet Honey From The Rock (who aren’t really a choir anyway) I have never been that enthusiastic. But there is no getting away from it, choirs are seriously on the up and up. Ten years ago Broad Sheep listed just a handful of choirs in the Music Workshop section but last month there were 23 and, assuming another 20 or 30 not in our listings, that’s over 50 choirs in the area. That’s a lot of people bawling their lungs out on the Borders. What’s more, they are not by any means all the same. There is a wide variety of musical genres and approaches to music making. Over the last few days I have spoken to people from a number of choirs, until I finally called it a day yesterday evening and switched on the telly. What do you think was playing on the channel it was set to? Of course, Fisherman’s Friends - a film that has a lot to answer for! Here are a few examples of the diversity available locally.
Natural Voice Movement For the last 30 years Whitton Voices have been meeting in Presteigne every Tuesday evening. The choir is led by Sue who also runs choirs in Bishops Castle and Clun. Sue, and her friend Polly who leads the Ludlow Larks and a choir in Tenbury, are both successful performers in their own right and subscribe to the Natural Voice ethos that says - ‘Many people are excluded from singing groups if they do not have music reading skills. We believe that vocalising, creativity and song should be accessible to all.’ They both agree singing is in itself good for both mental and physical health and are not particularly focussed on performing, although Whitton Voices have sung at a number of events.
Cantorion Y Gelli This Welsh speaking choir grew out of Welsh language classes and although only 4 years old has performed at two Eisteddfods. The choir is non profit making, has 24 members, rehearses in Hay on Wye and is committed to helping keep the language alive. They are singing in Presteigne on March 21st at St Andrew’s Church. Mothers in all Weathers Olivia runs choirs singing world music jazz and folk in Leominster, Erwood and Rhayader and also believes in the health benefits of regular singing and the sense of community that these choirs can encourage. Olivia has also started a group for all mothers who like to walk and who like to sing! Based at Willey on a Wednesday mornings, it is a singing walk, followed by tea and singing round the fire.
The Fisherman’s Mates Quite a few choir leaders I spoke to mentioned how difficult it is to attract enough fellas to fill out the bass and tenor parts. No such trouble for the rise and rise of Shanty groups. The Lower Deckers in Church Stretton, The Press Gangers in Presteigne and many more

including The Hay Shantymen are flourishing. The Shantymen are now on their ‘difficult 2nd album’ and are happily doing a dozen or more gigs each year. Formed in 2016 and now twenty strong they have played at Latitude Festival, Falmouth Shanty Festival, Brecon Jazz and of course Hay Festival. The choir are keen on the performing side of things but although they don’t have to learn Welsh they do need to remember the lyrics and parts to some 45 songs with no bits of paper allowed onstage! Don’t miss them providing the music for a a demonstration of synchronised swimming in the River Wye during Hay Festival! The Pop Choir This is another massive growth area with franchises like Rock Choir, Pop Choir and Some Voices organising choirs all over the country. Rock Choir claims to have 400 different choirs. No such business opportunities for my mate John, who just has one - The Presteigne Pop Choir. John’s real interest is in finding good pop songs and then arranging them to his liking. When the choir started he hoped he could sell some arrangements to other choirs but apparently that’s illegal. Still that hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm and the choir is an excellent social meeting point and sounds great. Go on Then What with Hay Climate Choir, Kington’s 60 strong Choral Society, Centurion Llandrindod specialising in early music and Gather Round and Sing For Fun in Presteigne you are spoilt for choice. Take a dekko at the Music Workshop pages at the end of the music listing and get stuck in. I can guarantee you will discover you have the voice of an angel, you’ll forget all your problems and probably meet the love of your life!!!

new towns
Patchwork quilt
ET UP by the Labour government in September 2024 two months after coming into office, the Lyons’ New Towns Task Force identifies 12 sites, 3 of which (starred) it highlights as its top priority. They are: Adlington, Cheshire; the Brabazon West Innovation Arc north of Bristol; Crews Hill, Enfield* ; Heyford Park, Cherwell; Leeds South Bank*; Victoria North, Manchester; Marlcombe , Devon; Milton Keyes (extension); Plymouth; Tempsford, Beds* ; a waterfront extension to the GLC’s late-60s Thamesmead ; and, closest to home, diminutive Worcester Parkway, where 10,000 units (plus a 25MW solar farm) have been magically tacked on to this rural park-and-ride backwater. Some of the homes won’t be ready for occupation for another 16 years. “Funny?” as Dud might have said to Pete.
Certainly the most ambitious, both in terms of planning and end-use employment prospects, is the Malayan YTL Consortium’s 7-year-old Brabazon West Innovation Arc (master planners: Feilden Clegg Bradley), initially comprising 6,500 housing units, but with the potential to grow to 25,000 and already being deemed a ‘New Town’ (MK peaked at 130,000). Established high tech businesses include Air Bus, GKN and Rolls Royce.
The government Task Force says it wants the Bedfordshire, Enfield and Leeds developments to be ‘economically-viable communities’ and sees Adlington and Marlcombe as ‘stand alone’ developments, in the style of Harlow or Milton Keynes. But do any of the 12 rank as true new towns, in the mould fashioned by Herbert Morrison? Rather surprisingly the report is silent on why no co-ordinator like the late Fred Lloyd Roche has yet been lined up (architect-planner Roche ably master-minded both Runcorn and Milton Keynes). Roche, Freddie Gibberd (in Harlow) and Berthold Lubetkin (up in Peterlee) went with the prevailing architectural grain: low-rise, low density, traditional materials. A natural ‘shoe-in’ for the Lyons Task Force to recruit would have been Tom Bloxham CBE, founder and driving force behind developer Urban Splash, which came within a whisker of winning the coveted Stirling Prize for Architecture two years ago for its restoration

of Sheffield’s 60-year-old Park Hill housing estate – the totemic industrialised building landmark they couldn’t destroy!
‘Hands on’ construction industry experience is clearly no longer an essential pre-requisite. With the exception of ex-Housing Minister Nick Raynsford, most of the 10 members of the Lyons Task Force seem to have had more experience sitting at building society boardroom tables than climbing ladders or walking on scaffold boards.
Barely 10,000 social homes are currently being completed annually, due (so the Task Force claims) to the lack of social housing providers - a suggestion contradicted by 150-year-old Peabody Trust’s track record; with ‘an ageing workforce’ and paucity of raw materials (such as cement, would you believe) also being cited by Housing Minister Steve Reed. Labour’s wildly ambitious - some would say ‘reckless’ - election promise to deliver a total of 1.5m new housing units before the next Election will require at least 300,000 completions annually until August 2029. It is currently achieving just over 230,000. Right now, Mr Starmer, the numbers don’t add up.
Missing from the roll call is the Duchy of Cornwall’s traditional-style housing at Nansledan near Newquay (currently 640, but planned to rise to 4000); Poundbury barely gets a mention (2750 homes occupied and a further 550 planned); and there is no reference to the 2500-unit sustainable housing development The Crown plans at Faversham in Kent; or the 950 units already under construction on the Thames Estuary at Dagenham Green (underwritten by Peabody), set to peak at 3,500, including 1640 affordable homes. Ironically. Nansledan is the only township which properly conforms with the term ‘new town’ yet it’s not even mentioned. A late entrant is former Guardian investigative journalist and green activist Shiv Malik’s ‘Forest City’ east of Cambridge, featuring a necklace of newly-planted pockets of woodland, sheltering modular timber-framed homes, with an ultimate population of 400,000, yet it doesn’t even feature on Hunt’s list.

Borderlines Film Festival
IT’S that time of year when the Marches are flooded with a hugely diverse array of films old and very new – yes, it’s the Borderlines Film Festival. This year the organisers have grouped together certain strands: Comedy, Rural and Child’s Eye View so if you download the catalogue (at https:// borderlinesfilmfestival.co.uk) you can see for yourselves if they rock your boat but I’m going to concentrate on fare that I’ve been lucky enough to see and certainly rocked mine.

For starters there’s Father Mother Sister Brother the long-awaited return of Jim Jarmusch (Down By Law, Broken Flowers) which as its title suggests is a meditation of family relationships, most notably the strains between parents and offspring. Yet again the ever quirky Jarmusch has recruited Adam Driver (c/f Paterson) for the opening sequence as the father and his sister (renowned American T.V. actress Mayim Bialik) visiting their possibly dementia-suffering dad (another Jarmusch regular, Tom Waits) which is at once both wittily droll and moving and sets the tone for the rest of the film which, despite a starry cast including Cate Blanchet as the prissy daughter of an imperious Charlotte Rampling is very much an ensemble piece. And as with all the Borderlines films I’ve hitherto reviewed in these pages, e.g. One Battle After Another, The Choral, H Is For Hawk this is another you should not miss.

I will say the same for Bugonia , which I gave a one-line recommendation for last December and marked a magnificent return to quixotic form of Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Alps). Here Emma Stone (co-star of Lanthimos’ The Favourite) plays the predictably hard-nosed boss of a big pharma outfit who a conspiracy theorist (Jesse Plemons, Power Of The Dog) is convinced is an alien bent on destroying our universe. He persuades his less-thancommitted cousin (Aiden Deblis) to help him kidnap her prompting a frenetic, darkly hilarious rollercoaster involving

drugs, some violence and a seriously dramatic haircut which all ends utterly unexpectedly.
Going considerably back in time you can see the first and indeed one of Jean Luc Godard’s finest works, A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) which features the gloriously louche, fedora-wearing Jean-Paul Belmondo, Gitane constantly hanging from his lips who after a murderous crime spree hides out with his American girlfriend, elfin-like Jean Seberg, in her Paris apartment. Co-written by another of French cinema’s greats, Francois Truffaut (400 Blows), the hugely engaging Breathless turned both actors into instant stars and defined what became known as French cinema’s ‘nouvelle vague’. So it’s no coincidence that Borderlines are featuring it alongside Richard Linklater’s latest homage of the same name. His Nouvelle Vague is essentially a sparky, often amusing account of the making of Breathless with a host of – to us – little-known French actors including Guillaume Marbeck as Godard and Aubry Dullin bearing an uncanny resemblance as Belmondo, and seeing the two films in tandem will be a treat for committed cineastes.
A more straightforward comedy, Is This Thing On? features hubby Will Arnett (T.V’s Arrested Development) about to get divorced from his harassed wife (Laura Dern), and who accidentally turns to stand-up comedy as an emotional balm and gets rather good at it. Based loosely on real-life comedian John Bishop’s career and directed and co-written with Arnett by actor Bradley Cooper, (A Star Is Born), who has a scene-stealing minor role. With warts ’n’ all close-up camera work by Mathew Libatique, it has great one-liners and contrasts to a couple of other Borderline’s offerings which stem from marriage breakdowns, French director Anna Cazenave Cambet’s Love Me Tender and taught Icelandic drama, The Love That Remains
Finally some other notable mentions include If I had Legs I’d Kick You starring an often under-appreciated Rose Byrne (Spy), as a put-upon mother with an absent husband, ailing daughter and a meddling therapist (U.S. talk-show host Conan O’Brien) who albeit with strained good humour watches her world in one respect quite literally crashing down around her. And Borderline’s reputation for stunning documentaries is maintained with the likes of Our Land about the right to roam movement, and Iron Winter which chronicles the daunting task of herding 2000 wild horses during a fierce Mongolian winter.

Top Tories Mimic Farage in Lurch to Climate Denialism
BACK in the day - well, nearly twenty years ago - the Climate Change Bill was passed overwhelmingly by the House of Commons. There were so many votes in favour of it that it was much easier to count the tiny handful of MPs who opposed it.
I will confess that I have had to look up the names of those who could not stomach what became the Climate Change Act. That’s because this tiny band of politicians have left little trace in my memory, and maybe in the minds of most other people who are not lifelong Westminster-watchers.
There were just five opponents of the Climate Change Act. Philip Davies. Christopher Chope. Is there a flicker of recognition? Andrew Tyrie – a former employee of British Petroleum? (that figures, I guess.) Peter Lilley – a right-wing one-time cabinet minister? He will be recalled by some political wonks. And, last but not least, Ann Widdicombe!
She will be best remembered for her slap-down of a fellow Tory, Michael Howard. In her view he had “something of the night about him”. She came up with this killer phrase not off the top of her head but after running it by colleagues over some weeks, and getting nods of approval.
To sum up so far. About twenty years ago, the Climate Change Act was passed by a massive majority of MPs, with only a tiny ragbag of Tories opposing it. Since then, year by year, the evidence for man-made climate change has got stronger and stronger.
So, what impact has this mountain of evidence had on the Conservative Party? Defying science, logic and common sense, the party led by Kemi Badenoch has turned a somersault and decided to oppose measures to combat global heating. Instead, it has begun to mimic the denialist antics of Nigel Farage and his Reform UK Party.
The daft thing about this is that Kemi Badenoch, and her climate spokesperson, Claire Coutinho, concede that global heating is going on, and that we, the human race (plus livestock) are causing it. So the guilty parties are –most of us!
But where Badenoch, Coutinho, and their fellow Tories fall down is over what to do about climate change. Their answer to global heating is – a deafening silence.
An academic expert on climate change at the London School of Economics, Bob Ward, has penned a withering critique of the Tory stance on climate change under Badenoch. He says the Tory leader has claimed that, in taking strong action to combat global heating, the UK is out on its own.
He says, it is “…disappointing that Ms Badenoch now promotes the myth that other countries are not cutting their emissions.”

Trying to put the record straight, Ward draws on figures from the European Commission. These show that, compared with 1990, by 2024 emissions in France were down 28.8 per cent. In Germany they were 45.4 per cent lower. In Italy 26.5 per cent. And in Japan they were down by 17.9 per cent.
While Kemi Badenoch was in government she and other Tory leaders signed up to a raft of high-minded pledges to combat climate change, but, since the Tories became the main opposition party, they have totally binned all such ideas. One example is the use of heat pumps. I have no real idea how they work, but according to most climate change experts they are a key weapon in the armoury of any government trying to cut dependence on fossil fuels for heating and lighting.
However, the Tory leader suggests the UK’s rate of deploying this technical fix is painfully slow. At the present rate, she claims, installing enough heat pumps to meet Britain’s required target will take 300 years. I have not had time to check her numbers, but let’s assume that Kemi is right.
I am no mathematician, but my off-the-cuff conclusion would be that we therefore need to go ten times faster at installing such systems, so that we meet the target in say 30 years, rather than 300. Yet Badenoch’s perverse conclusion seems to be that we should junk such technology or put it in the box marked “impractical” or too difficult.
The LSE academic, Bob Ward, suggests the Tory leader’s facts, arguments and conclusions, are riddled with falsehoods and misunderstandings. “Overall,” he says, “it is extremely disappointing that the leader of the Conservatives relies on so many false claims in making the case for abandoning climate change policy.” I have nothing to add.
