The Big Bucks

Y unsuccessful attempt last month to discover a hoard of Viking gold (see May Ed) has put me in a really bad mood. It ill behoves someone of my superior brainpower and obvious creative skills to be dumpster diving in the bins behind Premier. As from today I intend to buckle down and find a surefire (possibly legal) method for making my next fortune. Surely if Trump and his nasty crowd of sycophants are all billionaires it must be possible for me to pick up the odd million.

You might imagine the most obvious method for a longhaired guitar player, like me, to strike it rich would be to write a hit record. Sadly it seems the Tango went out of fashion in 1932 and because of my current lifestyle in a tiny border town I don’t have much experience of guns, hoes and gangs that a serious rapper needs to sound authentic.

However, it struck me that back in 1960, before I had read ‘On The Road’ and started hanging out with a nasty crowd of beat musicians, I used to be quite sporty. Once, I even won a medal for the Pole Vault! Perhaps now is the time for me to return to the world of sport, especially since the Olympic Committee has decided its OK to earn a bob or two. I wonder how the pole vault has been progressing since I abandoned it? Lets have a quick Google. Bloody Hell!! Apparently the current big name is Mondo Duplantis and he can clear 6.27 meters (that’s twice the height of our bungalow) and he makes over £1 million a year including sponsorship and advertising.

Things really have moved on haven’t they? I wonder what kind of dosh other sportsmen make these days? How about cycling? That could be the sport for me although I would obviously have to be allowed to use my electric bike. The current cycling whizz kid is the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar he pulls in a tidy £6.5 mill and even Brits like Adam Yates and Tom Pidcock are clearing over £2 mill. That sounds tempting, although to win the Tour De France you do need to race over 2,000 miles in 3 weeks, without any drugs, which could be asking too much. The tennis players seem to do even better Jannik Sinner pulls in £24 million a year and it is refreshing that unlike other sports the women get a fair crack with Aryna Sabalenka cashing in at £11 million.

All this makes me wonder

how much do those overpaid, poncey, footballers make? In 1960 the average footballers wage was £20 per week. Christiano is on a cool £200 mill per year and Messi is doing okay on his £100 million. Even Haaland is making £45 million per year in the Premier League.

Any of the above figures would suit me fine but I guess these guys have to do an awful lot of running around, which I don’t really fancy. What I need is some sport that can bring in the big bucks but is a bit more sedentary, like snooker or bowls. You can sit down when motorcycle racing, but, have you seen it on telly? It looks very bleeding dangerous. When local hero Chaz Davies was contesting World Superbikes a couple of years ago I used to watch it on TV through my fingers (just like Al does when she is watching gruesome detective stories on Netflix).

Therefore, I think it’s going to have to be motor racing. Lots of money sloshing about, you can sit down in a comfy seat and do it, plus I have masses of experience having driven roughly half a million miles since passing my test in ’60’s when the best paid driver, Stirling Moss, made £8,000 a year. These days Max Verstappen makes £50 million, Lewis £45million and even Kimi Antonelli still in his first year in F1 makes a tidy £1.5million. Since I have clocked up the equivalent distance to the moon and back and Kimi at 18 hasn’t even got a driving licence, I reckon I should earn, say roughly, 50 times as much as that precocious brat. Yes, that would do nicely. If I pull it off, the drinks are on me.

Money can’t buy me love

MOST Broad Sheep readers will recall those weekday evenings five years ago when we were encouraged to stand on our front doorsteps and clap for the NHS. Few regret that show of solidarity, though for this writer the management of the local NHS trust leaves much to be desired. In particular, Herefordshire County Hospital, financed through Gordon Brown’s egregious Public Private Partnership Initiative.

If you are short-cutting away from the Hospital, using the Union Street / St Guthric Street rat-run, proceed with great caution, lest a huge khaki-coloured angular object parked near the curb should cause you to crash. Though pulling yourself from the wreckage you’ll only be yards from A&E.

The unlovely two-storey-high structure is Centrica Business Solutions new Energy Centre. It stands on what used to be a tranquil walled garden, part of which, according to the council’s archaeological unit Hereford Through Time, was once the site of a 12th century Christian Grandmont priory. Other religious orders connected with the site include St Dubricius (6th century) and the lost Benedictine Priory of St Guthric (8th century). Building on hallowed ground was not unknown. A veritable archaeological tapestry lies beneath the ground here. Such a pity that the hospital authorities don’t mark the area’s unique significance with an information panel.

On the other side of the wall, the car park at the rear of the former Odeon cinema in Commercial Road (presently the County Bus Station) is scheduled to be vacated once the long-awaited Transport Interchange in front of Hereford Rail Station is completed. Hereford Civic Society had sensibly suggested that the vacated site could become affordable housing and even put forward a draft scheme. Another suggestion was for a Nurses Hostel. But the County Council’s solution is to make it the site of a multi-storey car park, to compensate for the 400 parking spaces which will be lost when the remainder of the Merton Meadow land is developed with housing. At the extreme west end is a Listed two-storey Regency dwelling – once the Governor’s House - attributed to John Nash and the sole survivor of the City Gaol.

Formerly known as The Ritz, Commercial Road’s stylish cinema opened in 1938. It was designed by Leslie H. Kemp for the Oscar Deutch entertainments empire and many of its Art Deco flourishes are said to have been ‘borrowed’ from Eric Mendelsohn’s iconic De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill-on-Sea. Around this time, Deutch was opening one Odeon a week – many of them in the Midlands. In parallel, he also commissioned the group’s London flagship, the gaunt polished black granite Odeon Leicester Square. In 1972 Hereford’s Odeon was ‘twinned’ and its lower level became Lovejoys night club.

Since 2016 it has been the headquarters of the American Freedom evangelical church.

Herefordshire Council needs to demonstrate ‘historic pride’ for some of the Listed buildings it owns, such as woebegone Churchill House (rumoured to be about to undergo refurbishment in preparation for its sale) and take a leaf out of Friends of Castle Green’s book by making it the subject of a Community Asset Transfer like The Pavilion. A quarter of a century ago the Victorian mansion was purchased ‘for the enjoyment of the people of Hereford’.

Finally, a brief mention of an exhibition marking the 10th anniversary of the beautiful restoration of the 15th-century Masters House in Ledbury, originally the residence of the Master of St Katherine’s Hospital and now an actively-used part of the market town’s library facilities. Opening hours of the Ledbury exhibition are irregular, so visitors are advised to telephone 01432 383499 first. Nick Jones

St Dubricius

a view from the marches

Reasons to Roam

THE true joy of roaming is in the profound sense of freedom it allows in planning one’s own route over the surface of the earth, choosing whichever leads to the most intriguing end. There is a warm tingle to be had in sitting on a springy, sheep-grazed riverbank, having a drink or cooling your feet in the glittering flow, wondering which way to follow its twists and turns. There is a big, spectacular buzz in sitting on a hill top, where the earth meets the sky, sweeping your eyes over a full panorama of the land below, knowing you can scramble down the hillside with nothing to stop you in any direction.

Forty years ago, when I first walked a hundred miles from Chepstow to Montgomery in the mid-Marches, I was taking advantage of the rights of way accumulated in the creation of the Offa’s Dyke path. The national trails in this country have gone a small way to granting to many of us the freedom to walk away from roads and traffic. They provide the added bonus of the walker not being made to feel a criminal for being there, as they might in the privately owned, legally restricted 80% of rural England and Wales.

On the fifth day of my journey through the Marches – Hay to Kington – I recall with elation an interlude when I’d stopped for a breather on the western slope of Disgwylfa Hill, east of Newchurch. I stretched myself across a patch of turf between bunches of gorse and bracken on the gentle slope, exhausted by a brisk morning’s walk from Hay. In a blue sky, a strong August sun warmed the ground where I lay, feeling utterly free, encroaching nowhere I should not have been. I was kept company by a few rabbits and a flock of grunting, munching sheep, scattered across the hillside, unworried by my presence. I closed my eyes, lulled by the lark, the golden plover and the keening buzzard. Within minutes, I was slumbering deeply.

I’ve no idea how long I’d been unconscious before I was woken by the squeal of an anguished rabbit. I turned my head to see. a few yards away, a buzzard grasping the wriggling rodent with big black talons on bright yellow feet, before bearing it off into the blue – a vivid view of nature in the raw. It seemed that the bird had ignored my motionless presence. Witnessing this little drama, I felt a closeness to Mother Earth, a part of the living landscape, which I have never forgotten.

I could have been anywhere on Disgwylfa Hill – it is higher ground, designated as land with the Right to Roam. The arguments are morally strong for allowing this kind of freedom to exist everywhere in rural England and Wales, without impeding the production of food or the protection of any special needs of nature and wildlife.

However, the ownership of land is a deeply held, emotionally volatile principle in the psyche of modern western man, although, as a concept, it is just a few

thousand years old. For the preceding nine hundred millennia, sapiens has existed in simple, non-proprietorial harmony with the Earth. That continued to be the case in what we now call America, before we Brits, the French and Spanish, in Trumpian conquest mode, arrived to steal and annexe the land from the indigenous people. The Brits on their own did the same in Australia, to perpetual devastating effect on the people there.

Men like Mr Farage in their blunt and simple way, would claim that this view is anti-British, that I harm our country by criticising the actions of our ancestors. But then, these critics may be unaware of either the concept, and value of self-examination or Socrates himself, who first proposed it.

Land ownership is not a natural law, it is a human construct, based on mythical law, created to underpin individual’s power. But it has come to be seen among traditional Englishmen as a ‘Human Right’. Hence active supporters of the Right to Roam are perceived as aggressive, bearded lefties, yelling Marxist slogans, engaged in a kind of class war.

The truth is that the vast majority of those who support the Right to Roam in England and Wales are considerate, compassionate lovers of Mother Earth who simply ask for recognition of their right to commune with her.

Majority opinion in England is still, for reasons of old-fashioned, dumb deference, on the side of those who own the land. They argue that uncontrolled dogs will damage livestock, and mindless ramblers will trample over crops and ground-nesting birds. However, in Scotland, where a general right of access already exists, there has been far less damage or trouble than was predicted before the change in the law.

I’ll Get Rich... Or Die Trying

PETER Mustill isn’t the only 70-something old codger bent on trying to make some serious dosh in his declining years although until now I’ve been more exercised by too many friends and colleagues from past decades having popped their clogs, and even in the past few months others have passed on or been diagnosed with terminal illness. It’s also true that beyond age 65 health issues seem to dominate our lives and I was recently reminded that my compadre Dr Sam Hutt – a/k/a bawdy C&W singer Hank Wangford – on meeting up with pals and peers advised us to open conversations with, “Apart from your health, how are you?” Or failing that, set a 10 minute limit on such potentially depressing discussions.

Inevitably, I’ve become mildly obsessed with my forthcoming departure from this mortal coil, not least because it looks like I’ll be spending my remaining years as a miserable old singleton. Indeed I’ve regularly been attending a wonderful local group called Liminal Space (c/o wingsofchange24@gmail.com) which encourages us to approach death with a positive and practical attitude. However I’ve now decided* to make the most of and in fact profit from this somewhat grim inevitability by becoming a social ‘influencer’.

Do any of you internet fiends follow such influencers via your busy Tik Tok or Instagram accounts? Personally I’ve never seen the point of avidly watching some trout-pouting bimbo or trimly bearded lad-dad and rushing to buy the products they peddle online, and am frankly saddened that millions of impressionable and not just youthful souls have the time and the mental capacity to buy into their schtick. But this apparently is the modern world so never one to miss an opportunity to embarrass myself in pursuit of inappropriate hipness, I think I’d best join their ranks.

My pitch will be pimping funeral directors nationwide, woven willow caskets and green burials, will-writing services, equity release scams, sorry, schemes, funeral celebrants, the Top 40 crematoriums with nearby pubs for wakes, and probably cryogenic freezing outfits for those rich and daft enough to believe that their bodies can be exhumed when the elixir of permanent life has finally been discovered. Duh. I might throw in plastic surgery for those of us who find it unacceptable that sagging bodies and crinkled faces unavoidably signify that we’re on the downward slopes of our three score years and ten, and maybe retirement homes for those who can no longer be arsed to open a tin of pilchards for our supper and launder our incontinence pads.

My only problem is that I’m already wrestling with the ever-increasing complexities of FarceBerk which I use solely to promote my unpaid scribbling (see below) so I’ve no idea how to set up a social media site where I can flog all this rubbish and I don’t really know anyone under the age of 25 who could show me the ropes. But if all else fails, I’ve got another Get Rich Or Die Trying scheme up my sleeve: I’ll become a Death Coach. After all, I do know

a Life Coach, the lovely Fiona McDonald, a good friend of myself and the much-missed Nicola Humphries of this parish who unceremoniously thrown on the scrapheap after a fine career as a T.V. producer realised that she could cop £200 – £300 a month telling a subscriber when to put their bins out, how to deal with a dripping tap (i.e. call a plumber) and what to wear for that all-important first date with some bloke (or blokette) they’d met on an internet site.

Having also found myself on the scrapheap after a so-called career in print media – thanks internet, thanks Covid, thanks wilful tunnel vision – whilst admittedly it’s a bit more morbid than being a death influencer, but as a death coach I could advise my subscribers on what music to have played at their funeral (Sid Vicious’ My Way?), how to make the most of their remaining years whilst avoiding bankruptcy, alcoholism or Class A drug addiction and if all else fails to excite them, the most cost-effective countries for assisted dying (hint: not Switzerland).

So if you’re at all interested, I’ll shortly have my website built and will be promoting in my next blog and unlike Fiona, my charges will start at a more realistic £350/month per subscriber because I may not have them for that long and I really must get that Maserati Coupe and Suzuki GSX–R1000 to make a fool of myself in and on whilst I’m still able to.

* Just kidding

THE SALT PATH (12A) – 115MINS

The concept of long treks undertaken to overcome personal trauma is well-trodden path (sic), think Reese Witherspoon in 2014’s Wild or Martin Sheen in 2010’s The Way but closer to home and based on a true story we find middle aged husband and wife Ray (Jeremy Isaacs, The White Lotus) and Moth (Gillian Anderson, Scoop, X-Files) embarking on the 630 mile coastal path from Minehead to Poole with only a tent and pocket change to sustain them. Why? Because due to skullduggery they’ve lost their home, the bank’s foreclosed on them and they hope they’ll find solace and acceptance on such a journey, which becomes even more prescient when Ray discovers that he’s got a rare terminal disease. Long, steep hills, iffy weather and Ray’s progressively worsening health make for some courageous and believable responses from actors at the top of their game and the stunning coastline adds considerably to a thoroughly engaging dissertation on hard won redemption.

THE PENGUIN LESSONS (12A) – 110MINS

Redemption also comes in the form of the eponymous penguin, nicknamed Juan Salvador, who disillusioned, ex-pat teacher Tom Michell (Steve Coogan), discovers covered in oil on a Uruguyan beach in 1976. To impress the woman he’s trying to seduce, he cleans up the traumatised bird in his hotel room and tries to return him to the sea, but Juan’s having none of that and the consequence of this finds Coogan in his most beguiling on-screen partnership since T.V’s The Trip with Rob Brydon. Not only does Juan’s touching attachment help Tom lose his inherent cynicism, but also beguiles his unruly students at the posh Buenos Aires school run by its uber-strict headmaster (Jonathan Pryce, hilarious). And along the way Tom becomes a political activist against Brazil’s military coup, all of which provides ample opportunity to display the deadpan humour and immaculate timing exemplified in previous outings such as Philomena and Greed, which his regular scriptwriter Jeff Pope and Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo makes full use of.

Jup Jup Thai Restaurant, Ludlow

LAST year, one of the many victims of the greed and incompetence of major pubco, Punch Taverns, was the Chang Thai restaurant, a former pub in the middle of Ludlow. The pubco has refused to repair the crumbling edifice and the adjoining very popular Globe bar with its sunny garden. The tenant who moved out was the same Adam Tutt who is shortly to be deprived by Punch Taverns of the charming Blue Boar in Mill Street. It seems that the owners of the heinous pubco are determined to blight the centre of this fine town. Mr P was sorry to see the demise of the Chang Thai where he had eaten often over the last 16 years. It is true to say that the standard could vary widely, depending on who was wielding the wok in the kitchen.

Real Thai cuisine is known for its subtlety and delicacy of flavours, juxtaposition of textures and painstaking preparation. It isn’t an art acquired quickly. Outstanding Thai Chefs are rare, and many restaurants identifying themselves as Thai are riding on the back of a well-established popular taste for eastern ethnic food in general.

With this in mind, Mr Pernickety gave a guarded welcome to the appearance of Jup Jup Thai in Tower Street. Now he has finally taken the plunge in reviewing it for fastidious readers of the Woolly O. With customary modesty, Mr P, claims no great expertise in the subject of Thai Food. He first experienced it in the late ’70s, at The Busabong in Chelsea’s Fulham Road. Regrettably, his only surviving memory of the event was that one of the other five around the table was the late scribbler, Martin Amis, on whom the young Mr P failed to make the slightest impression.

Mr P subsequently became more familiar with the intriguing cuisine and delicate flavours of Siam at another place in South Kensington, called, he thinks, The Bangkok. What he learned then was that Thai cooking is known for its unique balance of five taste sensations in each dish or in the overall meal: sweet, sour, salty, spicy and bitter. Beyond the flavours and health properties, Thai cuisine is traditionally made more engaging by being garnished with flowers, carved fruit and vegetables to create an edible work of art.

Feeling hopeful, Mr P booked a table at Jup Jup for dinner for himself and his Lovely Companion. Jup Jup has recently had an exterior makeover in pale satsuma – a warm, fresh look. Inside bare floorboards and simple deal tables seem to match the eastern food. Mr P and the LC were shown to a table near the middle of the restaurant, amidst several other crowded tables, one of such exuberance that all the diners wanted to talk at once. Sitting down, Mr P observed, not for the first time, that in such gatherings, the volume of laughter is in inverse proportion to the quality of wit that has prompted it.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a soft surface in the place to soak up resonating guffaws. Mr P suggests that the owners drape the ceiling with eastern cottons, like a tent roof, while covering the walls to make the level of sound tolerable, if they want their customers to enjoy talking quietly to one another.

In choosing their food, to start, Mr P made the mistake of ordering a platter containing a large quantity of stodgy fried and breaded things (although the Chicken Satay and its peanut sauce were good.) Next time, Mr P will order two or three individual tapas of varying textures.

The LC has always liked Thai Green Curry and ordered a main course of Sea Bass in a green curry sauce with two green vegetables and aubergine, she was pleased with this; the fish, she said, was fresh, delicate but not overpowered by the sauce. However, after that dish and the tapas she said she felt (although she certainly didn’t look) like a tubby owl.

Mr P’s Duck in Tamarind Sauce was disappointing. The duck breast wasn’t just deep fried, it was overcooked, chewy and oily. Duck has a delicate, distinctive flavour which Mr P loves when it’s handled well, which isn’t easy. That evening at Jup Jup, they hadn’t pulled it off at all. Mr P felt disgruntled; he finished his Pinot Grigio, wincing at the racket from the raucous table, but having recently vowed to be kinder to those he encounters, he wanted to be generous in his conclusions; to that end, he will come back and give the place another chance when the ceilings have been suitably muffled with oriental cottons.

Trump Blocks His Ears Against Global Heating News

HE has all the finesse and subtlety of a two-yearold having a tantrum. While Europeans and British people looked on in disbelief, the US president caused mayhem on financial markets by suddenly imposing huge tariffs on imports to the USA. But more important for the world at large is the way Donald Trump has lashed out at official scientific research into the widespread evidence of global warming that has come from climate science over the last two decades.

One key body that has been impacted in America by Trump’s climate science denialism is the NOAA – the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, one of the world’s most important sources of climate and weather research. In March, hundreds of employees were fired from the NOAA.

In protest, thousands of US scientists signed an open letter to Congress arguing that the dismembering and dismantling of that body, and of other leading scientific institutions, would amount to an “abdication of US leadership in climate science”, in which it plays an enormous role. Huge cuts in the monitoring of climate change in the USA have also affected a series of weighty official reports dating from 1990 and known as the National Climate Assessments. They have dealt with disaster planning, health policy and so on.

In April, work was underway on the sixth Assessment when scientists volunteering their time to submit research began reading email messages telling them their services were no longer required. The next report in the series is due for release in 2028. It was ordered by Congress, so it could emerge eventually, in some form or other. But scientists in this field are now asking how a credible report can be produced without any experts to compile it.

One prominent body representing environmental boffins is the Union of Concerned Scientists. Its vice president of science and innovation is Melissa Finucane. She fears that whatever is published in place of the next National Climate Assessment may be sub-standard.

“One might be concerned that the administration will replace it with something much less robust…potentially with junk science,” says Finucane. “I absolutely hope that the work that has been done can continue in some way, but we have to have our eyes wide open.”

Another researcher whose work has been disrupted is one of nearly 400 scientists working on climate change whose roles were terminated by email. Rachel Cleetus described the dismissal of these scientists as senselessly taking a “hatchet to a crucial and comprehensive US climate science report.”

Cleetus said, “We had, of course, been dreading this.” She also expressed fears that the Trump administration might try to replace valid research with work that would not stand up to scrutiny. “There’s a risk that they just try to inject some junk science and create their own version.”

But while some scientists have expressed anguish, others are seeking ways of filling the gaps left by the federal cuts. In May, two major US scientific societies - the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society - announced a new home for scientific research about the impacts of climate change, in the form of space in the organisations’ learned journals.

The president of the American Geophysical Union, Brandon Jones, said “It’s important to have that highquality data that has been generated from research and then obviously gone through that very rigorous peer review process that is a part of the scientific method to provide high-quality data for decision-making as it relates to climate resiliency.”

“There’s no question that climate change is happening, and there’s no question that the cascade effects throughout the natural and physical world and into our human existence is here, and it’s going to continue in very adverse ways.” Jones stressed that the space on those websites cannot fully replace the National Climate Assessment. Rather, he suggested, it could provide another venue for sharing crucial, vetted climate research that can inform decision-making, and help in giving early warning of major global change.

In the journal Science, a round-up of the planned cuts to federal climate and science programmes sounded a note of real alarm. It suggested that, if the wholesale slashing of federal climate science were not reversed by congress, the impact on US government weather and climate programmes could be crippling.

It quoted a senior former official of the NOAA’s Office of Atmospheric Research. Craig McLean, who worked at the Office until 2022, said the severity of the cutbacks would amount to “…a huge blow to the effort to understand climate change…It wouldn’t just gut it. It would shut it down.”

Scientifically, he added, “…obliterating the Office of Atmospheric Research would send the United States back to the 1950s—all because the Trump administration doesn’t like the answers to scientific questions NOAA has been studying for a half-century.” Julian O’Halloran
