COUPLE of weeks ago I encountered the most amazing downhill run - the cyclists equivalent of a fantastic ski slope. I decided there and then this would feature in my next pub to pub cycle guide so here we go.

Clun to Bucknell 500ft up 700ft down 7.4 miles But first, I know you guys need a drink in Clun to get you in the mood. You have two choices, The Sun and The White Horse. The White Horse has a good looking menu of pub grub favourites although what intrigued me the evening I was there, were a rowdy bunch of lads, who had just finished work, and who were downing pints followed by Baby Guinness (a shot glass 3/4 full of Tia Maria with a topping of Baileys!) Who knew that this was a thing? The barman assured me these days everyone (except me) was drinking this sickly sounding brew. Enough Baby Guinness shots of this nonsense it’s time to go. Head out of Clun on the Knighton road but turn left on the edge of town signposted Church Bank & Hobarris. You then have to endure 3/4 of a mile of pain until you get to the top of Hand Causeway where you get a stunning view back to Clun and beyond. Then you are on an empty lane that races you downhill with practically no traffic for 6 miles all the way to Bucknell, where you can fall giggling into The Sitwell Arms. Oh I forgot to mention halfway down you need to turn left to Chapel Lawn.

Bucknell to Lingen Flat 5.6 miles Once you have calmed down in the garden next to the Sitwell Arms you could head off to The Sun in Lentwardine but for a change lets go to The Royal George at Lingen.

The next bit is a nice flat gentle ride. Cross over the railway lines and head out on the B4367, after a couple of hundred yards there is a sneaky little left turn into a narrow lane. When you come to a fork - turn right cross the River Teme and you will emerge by Brampton Bryan’s fabulous church hedge. Cross straight over the A4113.

Carry on to the end of that road then a quick left and right and you are on the main road to Lingen. The Royal George in Lingen is the perfect place to while away a summer’s evening. It has a jolly nice garden out the back and tables and French parasols out the front and thanks to the newish owners some rather posh grub.

Kington to Gladestry 4.8 mls 404ft up 167ft down Then to Huntington 1.6 mls 184ft up 49ft You are feeling woozy …. We are going back, back, back in time… one century… two centuries….three centuries. To a time before there were bicycles. Wow, we are in 1767 when what is now The Tavern in Kington, named Herefordshire CAMRA pub of the year 2025, was called the House in the Fields until the 1850s when it was renamed The Railway Inn. Thankfully all the customers from the 18th century are still there sitting outside the pub in the sunshine commenting on the townsfolk as they pass by. Inside, nothing has changed but after a quick pint we have no time to linger because we are off via The Royal Oak, Gladestry to the 17th century and thence to the sleepy little village of Huntington. The best route is to leave Kington on the Hergest road and after 3/4 of a mile take the first right turn signposted cycle route 825. A charming, quiet lane leads you all the way to Gladestry and The Royal Oak a traditional 17th century, family run Welsh inn, sitting ready to catch the exhausted Offas Dyke walkers as they tumble down from Hergest Ridge. Then if you backtrack half a mile, along the lane you have just cycled, you can turn right up the hill to Huntington and, provided its after 7pm Wednesday to Sunday, you can meet Landlady Jane and enjoy the delights of The Swan. Unchanged since a refit in the 1950s, this 17th-century cottage pub is blissfully free of such new-fangled gimmicks as food, TV, pool or fruit machines. In the quarry-tiled public bar, the counter front incorporates 17th-century panelling and the bar-back shelves are topped with more such panelling. A big The Tavern Landlady old stone fireplace, settle and quoits complete the scene. It’s perfect.

philosophy Plumbing the Depths

T

HE show was about to start. The audience was settling down. Any minute now the house lights would be dimmed, the curtain opened and the performance would begin. Except it didn’t. Instead a lone figure appeared on stage, microphone in hand, with the following announcement: “Ladies and Gentlemen, there’s been an awful accident right in front of the theatre. Umpteen vehicles in a pile-up. Many casualties. Ladies and Gentlemen, is there, by any chance, a philosopher in the audience?”

This overworked anecdote has gone through various incarnations attacking a range of targets from crystal healers and acupuncturists, to white witches and astrologers. The allegation is clear enough - there are certain activities which are obviously of no practical use in the ‘real’ world. And, apparently, one such is philosophy. Harmless enough as a hobby, like stamp collecting or growing prize-winning leeks, but let’s not pretend it’s anything more.

To be told that ANY of one’s interests is a waste of time is hurtful enough, but if that interest has been a lifelong companion, fulfilling so many existential needs, and moreover has put bread on the table, well, that becomes an entirely different matter. Which brings me to think about philosophy - and plumbing. Yes, plumbing. Mary Midgley, one of our more original moral philosophers, was spot-on in seeing a link, unlikely as it might appear, between these two activities.

You don’t need a plumber until something goes wrong. Then you very much DO and you call upon their skills and experience to fix the problem. [Mind you, sometimes it may be tricky to know just where to turn for help. We once had a bathroom tap that refused to stay turned on. It would slowly but surely turn itself off.

On this occasion we were unsure whether to send for a plumber or a priest. A haunted tap maybe? Woody Allen was once asked what he thought was life’s ultimate puzzle. His immediate reply: how to get a plumber on a Saturday.]

We digress. The man on the stage [remember him?] asked if there was a philosopher in the house. A joke, but a joke not only with a sting in the tail but also hinting at a reasonable question: where DO you go to find a philosopher? Of course, you’ll discover some ensconced in universities. But what about the pub, the factory, the supermarket? Are these also the natural habitat of The Thinker? A famous Oxford don [whose name escapes me] when asked what exactly he did for a living, finally stopped using the word ‘philosophy’ because he dreaded having to hear the reply ‘I’ve always been a bit of a philosopher myself.’

Mary Midgley: Philosophical Plumber

Some years ago, a man - whatever happened to this fine fellow? - had a brilliant idea: he set himself up as wait for it - an Emergency Philosopher. Not only that, he used his van to prove the point. Proudly emblazoned on the side were the words MOBILE PHILOSOPHER. The implication was clear: philosophy, like the plumber, can come to your aid, it can help you straighten your ideas out, unblock your assumptions, tie up loose connections.

There’s a serious question lurking just below the surface here: is philosophy a specialized activity, the province of an intellectual elite, or is it part and parcel of the experience of ALL the passengers on the proverbial Clapham Omnibus? JB Preistley held strong views about this. He maintained that the ‘intellectual’ and the folk in the pubs, factories and supermarkets shared at least one common characteristic - they all experience those human feelings, fears, hopes, etc. that are part of what it means to be human, and out of which philosophical thinking emerges. Is it possible for anyone to go through life without EVER speculating about that life’s mysteries?

Seems unlikely, unless you share Kierkegaard’s bleakly pessimistic view that many people simply ‘sleepwalk through life’.

If Priestley is correct then the ability to ask philosophical questions can rightly be seen as a basic human trait, an integral part of all of us, irrespective of age, education, religion, etc. Of course, the outstanding feature of the professional philosophers is that philosophy occupies their entire working life. It’s what they do - and get paid to do - whereas the rest of us are likely to become involved as part-time practitioners. Often a question will be prompted by some crucial event in our personal lives - a tragedy, a challenge of some sort, a life-changing decision to be made, and so on. Or by some global disaster over which we seem to have no control. And so it is that in those moments, we start to ponder, to reflect, to analyze, to regret.

So back to our original question - ‘Is there a philosopher in the audience?’ You bet!

Letters Dear Editor I read the letters in your June issue with interest and other less complimentary responses. Without addressing any of the issues raised I feel they were a deliberate attempt to curtail freedom of speech under the guise of more worthy professed motivations. The trend to try and curtail freedom of expression is on the increase in my opinion and appears to be spreading into every aspect of public life including a regional What’s on magazine.

I have been reading Broad Sheep for over a decade now and whilst not always agreeing with opinions expressed by contributors have found it entertaining, informative and of course free in every sense of the word!

Opinion pieces do sometimes betray mild tho’ rather innocuous political leanings and this is wholly acceptable in a free society. We are not forced to read it.

I commend you for publishing the letters but would encourage you to continue producing your excellent magazine which is all about promoting the arts, learning and enjoyment and resist any attempts to police your output. We are lucky to have you.

I read Mr. Barrett’s letter and thank him for bringing up such important issues.

I agree with him in abhorring all forms of racism, including antisemitism. All hate crime is wrong and should be prosecuted.

The state of Israel has been accused of numerous war crimes and there is a warrant for arrest of Netanyahu. He should be tried in the international court, where he has right of defence, and an appropriate verdict will be given.

Meantime, the suffering of the Palestinian people shames the world; I urge the international community, including our government, to isolate Israel whilst it continues its present repressive and aggressive policy, until there are genuine moves towards peace with justice for the Palestinian people.

I am glad that myself and Mr. Barrett can express our views without fear of state reprisal. I hope for a happier future world where all people in all countries will exercise this human right.

O, was it worth the wait? With a potential annual throughput of almost 1.25 million passengers a year, Hereford’s new £10-million Hub is very small beer compared with something like New York’s Oculus transport interchange (250,000 daily). Hereford’s impressive total is due, in part, to student commuters (Folly Lane and NMITE campuses) and would have been even larger if council planners hadn’t rejected an offer from Midland Railways to extend the line from Hereford Station to Rotherwas.

Size isn’t everything. London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 currently has the dubious distinction of qualifying as the world’s largest Transport Interchange (TI) by dint of the air passenger numbers it handles: 30 million annually. But Hereford Station’s numbers are nonetheless impressive and doubtless one of the reasons why the local pressure group Rail for Herefordshire has been campaigning for improvements for over a decade.

‘Lack of vision’ In 2022, Herefordshire Council spent £800,000 on an initial design concept, (briefly exhibited in a lacklustre exhibition in the City’s Town Hall). RfH opined that the scheme demonstrated a remarkable lack of vision and would come to be regarded as ‘a lifetime opportunity wasted’. Hereford Civic Society were equally unimpressed.

Given that funding would probably have been available from the Historic Railways Trust, it is equally puzzling why the designers opted to site the new structure away from T M Penson’s 1856 Tudor-Gothic Grade II listed station, (in which the great I K Brunel is thought to have played a minor engineering role). And it ignores the shamefully dilapidated condition of the station’s first floor, now used only by pigeons. It is arrant nonsense that a listed structure must remain ‘inviolate’ from any 21st century additions; the late Nick Grimshaw’s all-glass Eurostar terminal at Waterloo sits happily alongside its Victorian neighbour.

HC also declined to improve the design of the scheme’s odd boomerang-shaped weather canopy (described by one councillor as ‘a wind tunnel’). And it is now being suggested that the relocation of the County Bus Station, presently behind the former Odeon cinema in Commercial Road, cannot be achieved before 2030. Four years seems an awfully long time to move a dozen clapped out metal bus stands. One wonders if it will ever happen.

The concept of the Transport Interchange – allowing travellers to effortlessly transfer from one mode of transport to another – is nothing new. Brunel’s Paddington Station (which opened in 1854) was a pioneering TI, where travellers were offered connections between long-distance steam and underground electric trains; buses, coaches and Lisbon’s Metro interchange simulates a forest of steel and glass palm trees

handsome cabs. The far-sighted engineer even insisted that the station should have access to two freight-carrying canals.

This correspondent’s favourite interchange? Santiago Calatrava’s exotic Gare do Oriente on the banks of the Tagus in Lisbon, created for that city’s World Trade Expo in 1998 and looking for all the world like a forest of glass and steel palm trees. It features a Metro station, a highspeed train hub, a bus station and a shopping centre.

The world’s most expensive? Probably the same Spanish architect’s $4bn Oculus transport interchange (2016), on the site of the former New York World Trade Centre (described by the New York Post as ‘a self-indulgent monstrosity’).

Most futuristic? Almost certainly the late Zaha Hadid’s curvaceous Riyadh Metro interchange in the Saudi capital’s King Abdullah Financial District, completed in 2016, with its white perforated Airtex-like cladding providing solar shelter.

It’s hard to objectively describe Steven Spielberg’s latest work but conversely that’s part of its appeal. It does however further Spielberg’s fascination with alien life bonding with humankind, e.g. Close Encounters and E.T. But here alien life itself is more muted when weather girl Margaret Fairchild (an Oscar worthy turn by Emily Blunt) begins speaking in tongues, and Russian, after having experienced Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs). Aided by cyber-security expert Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor, Prince Chuck in Netflix’s The Crown) and his girlfriend (Eve Hewson, Spielberg’s masterful Bridge Of Spies), their efforts soon come under the scrutiny, and then murderous intent of government agent Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth at his vilest), who’s determined to stop them revealing the existence of alien life. What ensues is an ethically complex and seat-edging chase thriller with huge dollops of potentially life changing, yes, disclosures about UAPs that could forever affect the world as we know it.

Well down on their moral heels are Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy as Lord Chauncey and Lady Savage running a crumbling, financially impoverished 19th century pile with Jack Farthing (The Riot Club, TV’s Poldark) as Chauncey’s mega-duplicitous butler, Halifax. The unexpected prospect of a visit from the wealthy and genuinely noble Lord and Lady Devonshire throws them into a flurry of largely unaffordable activity driven by their desperation to impress and thus improve their social standing and finances. Set against a backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion and the ‘French Pox’, it’s a tale of naked social climbing and brilliantly realised by cinematographer Adriano Goldman (TV’s The Crown) and production designer Gary Richardson (Paddington), it’s at once hilarious, satirically topical and utterly engaging as we find ourselves, perhaps paradoxically, willing the Savages to succeed in their appalling endeavours. The ending I will not divulge but the performances and writer/director Peter Glanz’s admirably flab-free pace are gloriously entertaining.

W

HEN Mr Pernickety arrived in the Marches quite a long time ago, he was energetic, inquisitive and eager to embed himself in Herefordshire’s bucolic traditions. Always drawn to things pastoral, he appreciated the connection between the local rich red soil, the crops that thrived in it, as well as the products created from them. There was no view he loved more than that from a high spot – like the top of Fromes Hill in May – overlooking a patchwork of dark red plough, hop-yards restrung, the pink blossom of the county’s orchards, the white blossom of ancient hedgerows, dark green pasture and – more recently – big yellow flags of rapeseed bloom. All these are capable of producing a whole menu of fine food and drink, waiting to spring forth after the summer months.

The fulfilling task of turning the fruit of millions of indigenous apple trees into a breadth of flavours of cider was to Mr P, one of nature’s great gifts to the county and so, economically, it has been, through the mighty Bulmers operation and the consistently high standards of Westons who together dominated the sector when Mr P arrived. While just up the road was the small Symonds factory which had created the much loved and slightly feared Scrumpy Jack. Mr P in his research of these local products was excited by the authenticity and colourfulness of the Golden Valley’s cider made by the Gwatkins.

Their perries and ciders have an engaging handmade quality to them. Just before Mr P moved to Herefordshire Ivor and Susie Dunkerton founded a cider press near Pembridge, seeking the highest standards and producing pure organic ciders and perries which became widely available. Dunkerton’s have now decamped to a shiny plant near Cheltenham and have increased the range and output – a good place to visit.

After his early discoveries, Mr P’s curiosity drew him towards an historic now illegal cider product called Applejack – technically distilled cider. Known sometimes as Cider Brandy or to Francophile Mr Pernickety as Calvados.

Only a couple of English bodies including King Offa’s distillery at the Bulmers cider museum had licences to distil cider into cider brandy. In recent years their still and the remaining stock from King Offa’s distillery were acquired by the always enterprising Ludlow Distillery (makers of Ludlow Gin). This enjoyable cider brandy which improves with age is available at the distillery shop by Ludlow Farm Shop – one of a handful of places in England.

However more pertinent to Mr P’s brief this month, he writes about a comparative newcomer in the cider world. A farm gate sign to Newton Court Farm Cider shop appeared around the millennium. Much later, when Mr

P began to see their ciders and perries appear on local eating house menus he tried them and liked what he drank, in particular Newton Court perry, Panting Partridge. This is a pleasingly understated drink with the character of a good white wine, rather than a cider and best served as such. Very refreshing and avoiding a cloying over-sweetness of less subtly produced perries.

When he discovered the cider shop had morphed into a capacious restaurant, he felt 25 years on that it was time to give the place a try.

His friend the Wrinkle Rocker asked if he could come too. The WR drove to Newton Court; Mr Pernickety was relieved to arrive as the car had lost its silencer, making the usual witty cut and thrust of their conversation unintelligible. He was also amazed to find the car park full on a Thursday lunch time (the restaurant closes after lunch everyday) It is clearly a popular family destination.

Housed in a large modern barn, it’s a well-lit, reassuring space, comfortably furnished and genuinely welcoming.

Mr P and his guest, hardened old eaters both, felt quite at home. The menu is a good choice of popular dishes around average price with the sensible options of small plates and good extras like skin on fries and aioli. Mr P and the WR chose to try the more exotic dishes in the WR’s case, a Newton Court Reuben. He’d had these in New York he said, but some core ingredients have been changed. The usual corned beef had become thinly sliced sirloin and he felt there was a shortage of Pickles. He enjoyed it well enough but felt it had been misnamed.

Mr P’s chicken Kyiv was a bit of a disappointment too.

The breaded chicken had been cut in half depriving him of the first cut and spurt of garlic butter although when it came to it there wasn’t much garlic butter, which is its USP. Maybe the chef feels it’s safer to appeal to blander pallets. He may be right.

This is not to say that Mr Pernickety and his guest didn’t enjoy the meal – they both did. Everything was fresh and well prepared, the coffee was outstanding and they easily heard each other’s satirical wit, while Mr P topped off HIS lunch with a delicious Raspberry Cheesecake. Two happy men left Newton court that afternoon.

grass roots Keeping The Sea at Bay - A Losing Struggle Against Coastal Erosion

T

HE coastline of Britain is under assault. I don’t mean from motorbikes or careless tourists, but from the seas that surround us. As you look at a map of the British Isles you can’t fail to notice the incredible amount of coastline around us.

More of it, surely, than around any other part of Europe. Clearly, I must exclude Greenland. At the time I last checked, that still belonged to Denmark, despite Donald Trump’s clumsy attempts to colonise it.

In an era of growing extremes of weather, the shores around the UK face a real struggle to survive the battering they take over many months of each year. If you look at a map of parts of the coasts that are under this assault, you can quickly see the extent of British territory that has been taking a battering.

I had reckoned the areas that are under threat of erosion, and indeed that are undergoing it at present, might be just confined to a couple of counties. But on looking closely, I can see that there are quite large stretches of land that are being abandoned by people that have lost homes as they fall into the sea, or as the occupants give up the struggle to remain and continue to try to stay in place, because inhabiting them has just become too risky.

At a rough estimate, there are many miles of coast, from Durham all the way down to Dorset, that are suffering ongoing coastal erosion. The problem is that you cannot just build defences that could be capable of holding back these raging seas. In England, each stretch of coastline is given a category that attempts to summarise the strategy being adopted to defend it against the waves.

This latter approach means – “Forget it! There is nothing that can be done.” Anyone having a home on such a bit of coast is effectively being told that it’s game over.

I am sure that, at first sight, this strategy may seem to many people to be pure defeatism. Surely, one might think, modern building methods and construction techniques must surely enable us to prevent houses and even stretches of road from just falling into the briny! The real problem is that in many places the cost of such a reclamation strategy is going to be prohibitive.

A group called One Home has very helpfully produced a summary map that demonstrates that, in England alone, there are fairly significant stretches of coast that are under threat or actually subsiding into the North Sea or into the channel. And this does not even include the hundreds of miles of coastline beyond England’s borders.

Climate change and the resulting rise in sea level is causing England’s coast to erode faster than ever before.

2022 was the warmest in England since records began over 300 years ago. As the world warms, and storms intensify, ice melts faster and the oceans expand, causing sea levels to rise.

This exacerbates coastal erosion because sea level rise and more violent storms create larger waves at higher elevations that batter the coast. England’s crumbling cliffs mean up to 80,000 homes are at risk of falling into the sea by the end of this century.

There is no insurance or compensation scheme available for those that are affected and home-owners may eventually have to pay for the demolition of their property. One Home suggests that from North-East England to Devon and Cornwall, 21 communities are at risk from coastal erosion in the next 75 years.

One Home tells us that sea level rise, and the increasing number and intensity of storms means that “some shorelines, such as in East Yorkshire and in Norfolk, are losing up to four metres of land every year. In addition to erosion, One Home tells us that “… low-lying communities are also vulnerable to flooding from the sea with many homes facing regular flooding because of sea level rise and tidal surges.”

The impacts of climate change, which are predominantly caused by burning fossil fuels, are accelerating as carbon pollution continues to accumulate in the atmosphere. Therefore, preparing coastal communities for inevitable changes is essential to limit the harm caused to people, wildlife and the economy.

One Home also suggests that some property agents may deliberately hide or minimise the risks facing those that buy seaside homes after doing little or no research about erosion risks. “So,” says One Home, many buyers are likely to be “…unaware of the dangers they will soon face. So, whilst many estate agents are happy to sell the seaside dream, in reality it can turn out to be a nightmare.”
