The Big Top

WAS going to write about Jimmy Donaldson, the 27-year-old online content creator and entrepreneur known as MrBeast. (His YouTube channel, to which he posts his increasingly elaborate and expensively produced videos, has 400 million subscribers – more than the population of the United States of America and equivalent to the total number of native English speakers currently alive.) But then, you wait all year for the circus to come to town and then 2 come along at the same time so, send in the clowns, its time to take a seat in the big top.

If you have been in Hereford lately you may have noticed a silver flying saucer has landed in that barren parking landscape next to Hereford football club. Inside, said spaceship, No Fit State Circus has been putting together their latest show. No Fit State was born in Cardiff in 1986 when five friends who loved to juggle introduced a new kind of circus to Cardiff. “To have an official juggling club was a great excuse to get minibuses from the university so we could go to festivals, so we did a lot of that,” said founder Tom Rack. “We started street performing and doing little shows, so we might even get paid a little bit.” The group taught themselves other skills including using unicycles, stilts and tumbling, making the most of skill-sharing opportunities at circus festivals where they met like-minded people from across the UK. When university finished, instead of going their separate ways, the five friends decided “let’s do this for a year, let’s just have a go. As young people in the 1980s, we were coming out of university with no jobs in Thatcher’s Britain. We were going out on the streets, just to top up our giro and earn enough for a few pints in the evenings.” The group signed up to Margaret Thatcher’s Enterprise Allowance Scheme, each taking home £40 a week to help fund their circus business, along with help from family and friends. Forty years later they are still at it.

There is still a little bit of Juggling in their latest show Sabotage but the most impressive thing about the show is their use of the 4 rigging towers that surround the stage. Members of the cast who are not performing can be seen scurrying up and down these towers to act as a counterbalance to the performers who

can be zoomed up into the air at any moment. The music is another outstanding feature and many of the troupe are also musicians and it is not at all unusual to see a performer leave the ring after a series of gravity-defying manoeuvres, head to the band and pick up an instrument. At the end when the troupe come out to take their curtain call you cannot believe how few of them there are to have produced a show that is so big. If I have any criticism it is reserved for the state of the facilities outside the Big Top which resemble a bar tent that has been artfully placed in a reconstruction of The Battle of the Somme and a dumping ground for 100 used Portaloos. Meanwhile, back in sleepy Presteigne, we have been graced by a visit from the Swiss Circus ‘Nicole and Martin’. This tiny jewel has visited Presteigne a number of times in the last ten years and it bears no resemblance to The Somme. Every aspect of their set up is immaculate. The tents, the trucks, the caravans they live in and the shows they perform. Back in the day Nicole and Martin’s two young kids used to enliven the show, but these days they are grumpy teenagers and have their own fish to fry. Every night N & M tell a different story, based on traditional folk tales but told with humour, music (they both play an array of instruments) plus lots of acrobatics, juggling and clever minimal sets. It goes down a storm with both the adults and the little kids in the front row. If you have never seen them try and catch a show next time they are here. Meanwhile they are off to Germany and then a first visit to Sweden and Norway.

So, I am sorry about missing out MRBEAST but here is a taster of one of his puerile videos. The Beast buys a complete large Supermarket, and all its contents fits a load of cameras and then locks a volunteer in it and agrees to pay him 10,000 dollars a day, in cash, to live in it, using only the contents of the store to eat, sleep and do his business. The volunteer is intent on raising a million but of course his lifestyle soon begins to disintegrate….

Here’s your £40 now go buy yourself a circus

A Coffee Conundrum philosophy

THEY come in all shapes and sizes, from the greasy spoon variety to the daintiest tea-rooms, from roadside caravans to market stalls. We’re talking cafes. But for my money, the daddy of them all is to be found hidden from public gaze in magnificent country house hotels. Of course they don’t call them ‘cafes’, never having heard of the term. In fact they don’t call them anything. It’s just assumed that their illustrious clientele is genetically programmed to know that the finest tea and coffee and equally fine service will always be available in such places of quality.

[Some years ago, in search of morning coffee, I visited one such establishment in North Wales. The splendid 18th century mansion, once a private home, offered a choice of rooms in which to take elevenses. But which one to choose? A waitress, dressed in black with starched white apron, came to my assistance. ‘I would recommend The Boudoir, sir - it has the best view of the peacocks.’ Breeding, don’t you know?]

Recently I sat comfortably ensconced in one of my all-time favourite cafes. A cosy place to be. No peacocks, alas, but many other delights: a welcoming and bustling feel to the place, friendly and efficient staff, imaginative food, a total absence of ghastly music, and even a choice of seating - armchairs, benches, plus a couple of booths offering a degree of privacy. Yes, a cosy cafe.

Sitting there anticipating a cup of their exceptionally fine coffee, I found my thoughts meandering around the idea of Perfection. What, I wondered, constitutes The Perfect Cup of Coffee? Sounds a simple question. But simple it isn’t. Not by a long chalk. The more you think about it the more complex it becomes. You’re soon swimming in deep philosophical waters.

The problem is we’re not talking about a single item. There’s the cup and there’s the coffee. But that’s just the beginning. There’s the person who made the drink, the magician operating the coffee machine. Plus the person who grew the beans, and the person who roasted them.

Are we done? Far from it. We have to consider a whole series of ‘what ifs’. For instance, even if the coffee itself was tip-top, what if the cup was dirty, or badly chipped? Or under-filled, or over-filled? Or the handle poorly designed and difficult to hold? What if the table wobbled, or was in need of a clean? Or what if the person bringing the coffee was off-hand, with the grumps turned full on? What if they spilled the drink in the saucer? Or what if you found yourself sitting next to some specimen whose table manners put you in mind of feeding time at the monkey enclosure? Is it still The Perfect Cup of Coffee? Surely we’re done now? If only...

A tricky ethical dilemma is about to threaten your enjoyment: what if we knew that the beans were collected using child labour, with the children badly treated and paid less than subsistence wages?

You realize that the physical ‘cup of coffee’ in your hand is part of a long chain of factors which have come together to produce the final product. It’s hard to know where the cup of coffee begins and ends. As with all things in life, everything is connected to everything else. It seems that the very idea of perfection is slipping away from us. Perhaps it’s an illusion, existing only as a philosophical or theological concept. In the final analysis maybe perfection is not attainable for the human animal.

A relative of mine used to say that however bad things are, they are never so bad that they can’t get worse. Our question, however, is precisely the opposite: is it possible that everything could always get better and better and better, ad infinitum? If so, then while improvement is always attainable, perfection, logically, is not, at least not this side of eternity. But maybe imperfection should be welcomed for its potential to promote improvement.

Optimism or pessimism? We’re reminded of the old chestnut that whereas the optimist believes we live in the best of all possible worlds, the pessimist fears that this may well be so.

In this age of global chaos and angst, with ancient alliances in tatters and human destiny seemingly in the hands of a few deranged individuals - not to mention the threat of global warming - pessimism and optimism have become urgent talking points. Is it all too late? Are we, to quote the Dad’s Army character - ‘all doomed’?

But here comes the coffee. Time to stop fretting. Time to start enjoying the moment, tucked away in this splendid cosy cafe.

I don’t believe it! There’s no sugar, and you’ve brought... TEA!

THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND (15) – 139MINS

Charles Heath (Tim Key), a reclusive, essentially lonely lottery winner living on the titular Wallis Island hires Herb McGwyer (Tom Badsen, T.V’s Mandy), a peevish folk-rock singer to perform a concert solely for him. What Herb didn’t know was that his ex-lover and musical partner, Nell (Carey Mulligan) and her newish husband are also invited and James Griffith’s film is a bittersweet, often very funny account of how these four characters adjust to their somewhat surreal confinement. Laidback Nell is almost the opposite of Herb but when coerced by the irritatingly verbose Charles to duet together, the old magic returns and, by the way, their performances are convincingly melodious. Overall the film has a certain and engaging poignancy but happily avoids mawkishness.

For those, who enjoy a good post-apocalypse movie, e.g. me, director Danny Boyle and write Alex Garland reprise their success with the second follow-up to their 2022 smash, 28 Days Later , although it’s actually 23! There are shades of The Road, Children Of Men and World War Z here, and with the consequence of the deadly virus which escaped from a British laboratory still raging a group of survivors exist on a rather different and heavily defended island. However when a father and son, (Aaron Taylor Johnson and newcomer Alfie Williams) decide to leave for the mainland, literally all hell breaks loose. It’s a real seat-edger with a fine cast including Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer and Jack O’Connell, stunning cinematography, a great soundtrack and even some poetry! Also well worth catching this month are F1: The Movie, Holy Cow, and rare screenings of the hilarious Withnail And I

The Green Dragon, Hereford

HEREFORD was once Mr Pernickety’s Metropolis, then a dull but prosperous little city with its own independent department store, Chadds, and a branch of Woollies and BHS. These have gone, along with a lot of other independent and multiple shops, thus creating gaps in the town’s shopping streets like sporadic decayed teeth with an air of general neglect about the once confident city.

Throughout the country there has been an obvious and significant change in the way in which people buy the things they need, or think they need. These days, a large proportion of retail sales are channelled through Mr Bezos or his Chinese counterparts. No government has had the raw pragmatism to recognise this irreversible change and its effects on the nation’s High Streets. In the interests of fair trade, online retailers should pay the same amount for their premises as any other retailers, whether through rent, or – more applicable to government – through business rates. But these retailers are powerful, influential operators whom governments are reluctant to cross. It would be a service to the public if High Streets were made cheap enough to accommodate small, innovative independent retailers selling products with a strong element of human input and natural material, rather than mass produced plastic stuff from China.

Another palpable change in Hereford is that it has become a dejeuner desert. Mr P found to his dismay a glaring absence of places that serve lunch, apart from the dreaded faux-Italian chains. The Woolly Organ’s food correspondent struggled to find anywhere interesting to eat lunch on a Tuesday. It’s fair to say that the town’s two excellent, independent burger joints were open, but barely a single ‘restaurant’. Even the big Brasserie at The Green Dragon – which Mr P has recommended in the past – no longer serves weekday lunch. Evidently the businessmen, lawyers and ladies who used to lunch now make do with a Tupperware box of sandwiches. In his research, Mr P was sad to find that Cotto, a family-run Italian restaurant in which he and the wrinkle rocker spent a jolly evening and recommended a year ago, has closed. A regrettable loss to Hereford.

However, last week, when seeking a midday nosebag to review with his always demanding, Lovely Companion, the only civilised place they could find offering lunch was the Garrick Lounge in the Green Dragon. This well-revived hotel, clearly aware of the local problem,

has carried on serving weekday lunch there. This is clearly a compromise, making that spacious but intimate room something of a random hotch-potch of mismatched and unsuitable furniture – unstylish, clunky tables between broad, deep sofas – an obvious half-measure which, if they plan to go on serving full meals there, they should attend too.

Mr P arrived at about 2:30, with the LC fairly ravenous after a busy morning of auction viewing. It seemed for a moment that they had missed the boat (although the website suggested that food would be served there all afternoon). But staff were helpful and rushed off to find a menu and make sure they would be served. The menu was short and surprisingly original. From a choice of small plates and main courses, Mr P and his LC chose small servings of Mac & Cheese bites with Salsa, and Breaded ‘Shrooms with garlic mayo as tasty, inexpensive starters. The LC went for Cajun Chicken Burger with Cheddar, BBQ sauce, baby gem and chunky chips – all met with her approval, and Mr P’s when he pinched a small sample. (Mr P has recently created his own Cajun spice blend which he uses to spice up his pulses and thinks he’s a bit of an authority.) For his own part, Mr Pernickety was especially pleased with his uncharacteristic vegan choice of Roasted Aubergine with Curried Chick Peas and Butter Beans – a dish full of flavour with unusual textures and positively memorable. There is clearly a skilled, original chef lurking in the back among the knives and skillets.

There’s a good wine list and a full gamut of coffees of varying frothiness. Mr P and the LC will certainly lunch there the next time the urge to visit Hereford becomes irresistible, in the hope that the feng shui and interior treatment will have been sorted out, while Mr P continues to be grateful that the Green Dragon, once the worst hostelry in Hereford, was bought six years ago and so whole-heartedly redeemed by its current owners.

Mr Pernickety

Gung-ho for Reactors!

Starmer & Miliband Rip Up the Rules

IWAS lounging around, or possibly almost asleep, thinking of writing an article about grossly overpaid water industry bosses, when I was wrenched into reality by a morning news bulletin. It announced that Britain plans to build another gigantic nuclear power station, this time at Sizewell, on the coast of Suffolk.

The prospect of a huge new generating plant on the east coast has been looming for years. But hearing about the official go-ahead still had the power to shock.

Have we not learned anything at all from almost seventy years of nuclear blundering? TV programmes about nuclear power in Britain used routinely to show footage of the late Queen Elizabeth, then more or less in the first flush of youth, opening the UK’s first nuclear plant in the 1950s. Was it Calder Hall? Or Windscale?

Despite the fact that news of untoward events at Windscale was routinely suppressed, we know at least that the site became so notorious that its name was eventually altered - to Sellafield. A place that I suspect even most people in Cumbria had never heard of.

Anyway, nearly 70 years after the young queen opened the world’s first nuclear power plant, we are still no nearer knowing what to do with all the highly radioactive and toxic nuclear waste it will produce. Except that we will somehow bury it in the ground, or store it in cannisters, maybe above ground, at one of our decommissioned nuclear power stations.

If that sounds vague, it’s because it is. And, in decades, no real progress has been made on how to dispose of all that highly radioactive material.

Given the troubled history of nuclear power in the UK in recent times, it is perplexing that anyone in government should want to pour billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money into another huge new nuclear project. The most recent comparable plant is Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

Even energy geeks must have lost count, a decade or two ago, of the delays and staggering cost overruns that have bedevilled Hinkley Point C. The company at the heart of the project is EDF – Electricity de France. In 2007 its then boss, Vincent de Rivas, liked telling electricity consumers they would be able to cook their Christmas dinner on power from Hinkley Point by 2017.

That must go down as one of the more absurd pledges by any energy boss in the history of nuclear power. Far from getting close to hitting the 2017 target, the company will now be lucky if it opens Hinkley Pont C before the 2030s, according to industry watchers. And this is the same company that is masterminding the Sizewell C project in Suffolk.

Sizewell C, we are told by the government, will cost around £10 billion and take ten years to build. But nuclear power stations have often been a bottomless pit for the governments investing in them. I would wager the contents of my piggy bank that both those numbers will double during the next ten years.

But, before we move on from Hinkley Point C, how do its numbers look in comparison with the optimism of Keir Starmer and energy secretary Ed Miliband? As I write this in mid-June, the size of the workforce at Hinkley Point stands at 27,000. Remember that Starmer and Miliband are suggesting that Sizewell C can be constructed with a workforce of 10,000.

Starmer has ushered in his energy policy with phrases like “slashing red tape”, which are none too reassuring for those who insist on careful regulation of this potentially hazardous industry. In February Starmer said the Labour government would “rip up rules to fire up nuclear power”.

Campaigners have objected to what they see as Starmer’s “cynical approach” and they accuse him of borrowing extreme language from far-right pressure groups. They have warned that weakening regulation at nuclear plants would put public safety at risk.

Of course, in the Brave New World of Keir and Ed this is not the only energy scheme to have been given a resounding launch. We have been told that this government is also going all out for something called carbon capture and storage.

So, instead of living on an overheated planet, we just bury all our greenhouse gas emissions. Deep underground. Somewhere. Wow! We must have got that brilliant idea from how we plan to deal with high level nuclear waste!

An Alexander teacher, accredited by and member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique, with over 40 years experience, I am currently offering lessons in Malvern and surrounding areas. Alexander work can help with back pain, joint pain, neck pain, as well as enhancing skills, e.g. in performing arts, yoga practice, etc. The lessons help you to become aware of faulty habits of body use, including inappropriate tension or misdirected energy. You learn to help yourself - it’s really a reeducation process rather than a therapy.
