AST year I wrote an editorial about Itchy Boots, a Dutch YouTube blogger who since 2017 has been riding her motorcycle all over the world. She recently took time out to recuperate in Holland, get some dental work done and avoid the worst of the Mongolian winter. She is now back in the land of yurts and yaks. In the intervening period I have been trawling round other people’s blogs. Despite my avowed disapproval of people who constantly have their noses stuck in their mobile phones I seem to have caught a similar disease. Perhaps describing these bloggers to you will purge me.

Motor Cycle Travellers The most interesting bike blogger I Marc discovered was Marc Travels, a rather lugubrious German who in 2020 ended his 15 years as a professional musician and rode off into the sunset. Something of a ladies man, Marc decided to embark on a number of epic rides first on his old Honda Dominator and then on a brand new electric motorbike. The swap to electric meant he was constantly worrying about where he was going to find the next charging point (or female companion). That being said he did make it round Europe and as far as China and India where he fell in love with an Indian motor cyclist. They set off but the girlfriend, Candida, hit a monkey, crashed and broke her leg. He left her to recuperate and embarked on an African trip. Annoying wheelie addicts Paul’s channel features stunts, close calls, run-ins with the police. He regularly posts videos about dirt bikes, supermotos and tests the limits of his motorcycles. Allow me to translate this intro for you. Paul is really talented bike rider but an exhibitionist who makes videos of himself riding up staircases, along the top of tiny walls, through parks on pavements - in fact anywhere he can cause major annoyance. Slightly Strange Ashley is a popular solo female vanlifer who left her conventional job to live full-time on the road in a self-converted Ford Transit. She documents her travels, DIY builds, and off-grid adventures across the UK, Europe, and Africa. Her channel focuses on solo travel, wild swimming, surfing. hugh’s bit On Spiders and A.I. 24th April 2008: In the angled light of dawn there’s a silver sheen to the hills. The grass on the slopes is covered in spun silk because today is the day the money spiders’ migrate. Tiny red and brown microdots wait to be swept into the air aboard silver threads, casting their fate to the winds now that the conditions are right.

After taking to the air they never touch down except to lay their eggs and then the next year the hatchlings in their turn climb the slopes, the trees, the bushes to launch themselves into the breeze. They live their whole lives aloft and adrift, suspended from trailers of spider silk which they spin out endlessly into the upper air. They are carried along by updrafts and breezes and even differential electric charges.

They feed on flying insects even smaller than themselves.

The commoner species spin out long single threads, which generate sufficient friction to ride the airwaves but there are other rarer species which weave exotic paraglider’s wings to a variety of exquisite patterns, comparable to the many configurations of plankton. They are found where the winds are gentle, navigating with tiny iridescent aerofoils along deep Bornean valleys and airless city canyons. They are Queen Mab’s off-spring, cousins of Peaseblossom and Mote, Titania’s gossamer creatures. They are the bringers of dreams.

15th April 2012: I had a dream the other day, My spectacles had run away.

The spectacles were a kind of arachnid machine, all legs, spokes, fine tubes, a cross between a tiny tricycle, a pair of glasses and a spider. On each pair there were 3 tiny spoked wheels; the front one ran on an axle mounted where the pads normally sit on your nose, with a mudguard that’s like the front of an Italian three wheel motorbike from the fifties (see 1954 classic film La Strada). Then there is a wheel at the back on each side under the loops that normally go over your ears, but no ears are involved at this time. The loops are like bicycle mudguards. Just at the back of the two rear axle hubs on each side there’s a wiggle of micro-glass piping with a little hammer in it, the hammer and the anvil of the ear-bones. The brain is a walnut in a half shell worn like a crash helmet suspended in the middle from a lattice or web of fine high tensile wires that criss-cross the contraption. The wires are a network of nerves radiating from the spider brain. Some of the brains wear spiked German

helmets. Retractable hypodermics and poison darts are secreted in the minute piping that makes up the bodywork.

There were dozens of them in my dream, ranged in a sort of battle order: bifocals, half-moon glasses, rimless SvenYoran Eriksons, heavy Ronnie Barkers, National Health John Lennons, some of them held together with traditional pieces of grubby elastoplast, like in the Lord of the Flies. They faced an army of evil dark glasses which also had ear and nose piercings, lots of gold bling and customised body work, tiny pointed flames coming out their exhausts. There were some binoculars in the background as a kind of heavy artillery, and one block buster telescope like Big Bertha from World War v.1. The female spectators paraded up and down like at Royal Ascot – tinted glasses with eyelashes along the upper rims, and aerodynamic fly away microlitic butterfly wings inlaid in mother of pearl like Edna Everidge, diamonds out wide in the top corners, occasionally tip-toeing into flight like dancing white storks.

The spectacle army was accompanied by paragliding eyeballs and decorated eggs with multicoloured sails, which exploded unpleasantly and released a foul smell if they were knocked out of the air. Here endeth my dream.

23rd May 2022: Imagine a spider’s web woven perfectly across a dome; it is the nervous system of the philosopher who sits patiently at the hub of the Duomo or the dome of St.Paul’s floating in space on an invisible trapeze. Apparently gravity free, they swing in long, slow arcs above the space, sifting the air, waiting for the seismic quiver of the apparatus to signal the arrival of another atom of evidence, a neutrino, an idea, an inspiron, air-fishing for motes, spores, living microdots and specks of dna in the breezes. Evidence of the future, seeding rumours, and always the tiny messengers, the aerial spiders, carrying whispers to the prophet’s ears. The natural scientist knows the earthquake long before it happens …

Below the acrobat a powerful light shines on a raised circle of shallow water, maybe 6 m. in diameter, so that the reflections of the surface endlessly dapple the dome.

The water trembles with the footsteps of the tourists, the struggles of a drowning moth, the traffic outside, a baptismal dip of the fingers, a sudden breeze through an open door or the darting motion of waterboatmen. It registers distant explosions and trembles fiercely in response to the bass notes of an organ recital.

24th May 2022: There’s a fisherman’s web strung across the rim-fall of a flat world’s oceans.

THE INVITE (15) – 108MINS

Essentially a longer remake of the Spanish film The People Upstairs, Olivia Wilde’s third directorial outing is an often wince-making comedy of social and sexual mores. Wilde, whose last work as an actress was ironically in I Want your Sex, also co-stars as Angela, the eager-to-please wife of Seth Rogen’s unfulfilled - in several senses - husband Joe who arrives home from work to discover that he’d forgotten that their noisy upstairs neighbours, Hawk (Edward Norton) and Piña (Penélope Cruz), are coming to supper. An evening of combative, whip-smart dialogue ensues which whilst somewhat reminiscent of Polanski’s claustrophobic Carnage descends into sexual provocation which Joe and Angela variously succumb to and are embarrassed by (as were some audience members when I saw it). However what’s undeniable is the chemistry between both characters and actors and in particular Rogen and Wilde have never been better and the overall result is consistently hilarious and remarkably engaging.

The woefully under-screened comedy-drama The Last Viking is my best foreign language film of 2026 thus far but this comes a decent second and stars the much-garlanded Jodie Foster as eminent Parisian psychologist, Emily Steiner, who believes that the alleged suicide of her patient, Paula, was in fact murder. Foster’s flawless French is of course matched by the equally esteemed Daniel Auteuil (Hidden, Jean de Florette) as her ex-husband and eye doctor, Gabriel, who she consults about her involuntary weeping and enlists in her efforts to seek the truth. But they’re aggressively thwarted by Paula’s family, notably her widowed husband, Simon, (Mathieu Alamrick, Grand Budapest Hotel) and the theft of a tape of her last session with Paula. It’s a distinct pleasure to see Foster and Autueil by turns determined and self-deprecating playful but whilst the outcome of their characters’ efforts may not satisfy all viewers it’s nonetheless a sprightly, unique and, yes, psychological whodunnit.

grass roots Found in Our Rivers - Otters, Fish and Even the Odd Lamprey

F

IRST of all, I must admit that this article started out as a piece about otters. I decided to learn more about otters after my dear friend and neighbour Celia told me that, near to the end of June, as she occupied some spare minutes on the banks of the River Lugg one evening, she happened across an otter.

I understand that this otter, having little else on its agenda, opted to fill in time, floating, splashing and generally keeping cool. But as I checked on the internet for the habits of otters in the rivers in my area, I came across some references to a very different and rather less attractive species.

For those unfamiliar with the River Lugg, that I live close to, it is a tributary of the River Wye that meanders through mid-Wales and Herefordshire. As I googled and searched, I found references to things that I had hitherto thought of as fish.

These occupants of our rivers had come up in history lessons in my schooldays. They are lampreys, and, according to our teacher, a certain English king, in the early Middle Ages, had taken a great liking to them, not as pets, I mean, but to eat.

In fact, he had devoured them on an almost industrial scale. The king in question being Henry the First. I had heard of some other monarchs in the early Middle Ages, like the Conqueror guy that led the Norman invasion of Britain, and I dimly recall a pair of rulers called Stephen and Matilda, rivals that spent most of their time trying to destroy each other.

Around that era, there is also Richard the Lionheart.

At school, he is presented as a hero. But, in today’s era of political correctness, he can surely be seen only as an appalling and bloodthirsty imperialist and religious zealot.

Getting back to lampreys, I can say, in all honesty, that the lamprey addict, Henry the First, had almost totally passed me by. There is not much of a detailed record of Henry the First’s lifestyle, but learned people have put together some facts about him and concluded that it is likely that he died from eating “a surfeit of lampreys”.

I have long thought that lampreys sounded rather delightful, but, as I googled them, I got a shock. I had Lamprey

assumed that they looked like whitebait, those little fish, fried in a light batter, that you get in Italian restaurants.

But the reality of the lamprey’s appearance is actually quite disgusting! It can hardly be described as a fish at all. Indeed, it looks like something from a terrifying nightmare.

In The Times recently, readers have been treated to an image of something called the silver-cheeked toadfish. The reason for this is that said toadfish have been cropping up in the Aegean Sea around Greece and its many islands. Apparently, these toadfish think nothing of taking a bite out of the leg or arm of any person innocently splashing about in the briny and invading their space.

Do they attack hapless bathers in large numbers, as piranhas are reported to in Latin America? I am not sure, but, judging by the look of the toadfish, you are advised to avoid it, should you happen to see one heading for you and looking hungry.

As if that might not be off-putting enough, the toadfish is said to be highly poisonous to eat. A mug shot of one in the paper does make the toad fish look unpleasant and threatening, but even it is less disgusting in appearance than the lampreys that Henry the First reputedly could not get enough of.

Apparently, lampreys have been around for millions of years. They even predate dinosaurs. It is hard to fathom the thought processes of lampreys as they first began to devour their neighbours all those many years ago. So, I do not attempt to.

At this point, I should stop rambling and try to recall the train of thought that took me from otters in the River Lugg to the habits of such deeply unattractive creatures as lampreys, toadfish and piranhas. In the creative process I should have roped in Charlie, another friend and neighbour.

He is in great demand as a convenor of poetic gatherings, and as an author of tales of mystery, imagination and horror. For those that like to be terrified, he can scare the living daylights out of you, even more than lampreys and toadfish are likely to.
