UITE by chance when we were recently clearing out our bookshelf I ran across a book called ‘Marrakesh to Mt Molloy’ written in 2004 by an Australian woman named Myra Hill-McLeod. It was in fact a series of diary entries about her travels mostly in the East between 1968 and 2004. I was intrigued to see that she was in Afghanistan in 1970 (when I was there myself) and even more intrigued by the hand written inscription on the title page Memories of Kandar (?) Cheers Pete from Myra. Since I have written and still perform a song about Kandahar I just had to read the book although I have no memory of where it came from. It reminded me how much I enjoyed a good travel yarn and especially the fantastic 1965 book written by Dervla Murphy, Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle, about her overland cycling trip through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Then last week I discovered a great series of YouTube films called Itchy Boots by a Dutch woman called Noraly Schoenmaker and realized that here was the natural 21st century successor to Dervla’s crown. If you already know these films then just mutter “Ah Pete, always late to the party” and move on – but, if not allow me to introduce you to a massive body of fine films that ramble all round the world. Noraly was originally a geologist working internationally for a dredging company but what she really wanted was to be a full time travel blogger. In 2017 she sold her house and motorbike and went to India. In North India she rented a motorbike and set off to explore the Himalayas and realized that motorbikes were the key to her destiny. She bought brand new, Indian built Royal Enfield Himalayan, kitted it out and named it Basanti. She also bought a Go Pro camera and started a YouTube channel, Itchy Boots. Since then, she’s ridden well over 100,000 miles in more than 70 countries, documented in 8 series of YouTube videos.
My intention last week was to watch all her films and write about them for B.S. but I hadn’t realized how many there were –literally hundreds! So I started by watching all of series 1. India to Europe 36,000kms passing through Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, the Oman Iran Central Asia Turkey and Europe. (By the way have you ever seen pictures of Ashgabat, Capital of Turkmenistan? All the buildings are white
marble and only white cars are allowed in the city!!) I realized I wasn’t going to be able to watch all the vids in a week so I skipped Patagonia to Alaska and began looking at some more recent stuff. As the years have gone by Noraly has got better and better at making these films, which now feature live commentary, multiple cameras and even a drone she can operate from the motorbike. However the most extraordinary feature of the films is Noraly’s apparently endless patience and good humour. Whether stuck underneath her crashed motorbike for a couple of hours in the African outback or waiting 3 days at some North Asian border town for a visa, she never seems to lose her rag. Everyone she meets along the way gets met with the same courtesy, laugh and smile. I imagine some of the dodgiest moments must be at police roadblocks in volatile areas of Muslim countries North of Afghanistan where a lone woman on a large motorcycle is rarer than the Yeti. Still somehow she manages to charm one and all.
Over the course of the series she gets through 4 or 5 different motorbikes ending up with a 1987 Yamaha Ténéré XT600z, called Frankie, which she had rebuilt by a German engineer. It seems to be ideal for her in both seat height and weight. The nearest she gets to throwing a wobbly is when someone tries to steal her beloved bike which happens in Iraq and I am mortified to say also in Swansea! In both cases she gets it back within a few hours. She also ends up with 2 million subscribers to her channel, which provides her with the dosh to keep on riding round the world. It’s a common phenomenon with travellers that one gets hooked on the whole business and 8 years in Noraly shows no signs of slowing down and I for one can’t wait for her next installment. Hey, hang on, one just popped up, series 8 episode 78 - In this episode, I want to ride my motorcycle from Gilgit, to the Kalash valleys in the west of Pakistan. It’s 400 kilometers and I hope to ride this in one day. But nothing goes to plan.

‘Not for the feint-hearted’
THE concept of Community Asset Transfer (CAT) first surfaced in the Midlands around 2008, following rumblings of discontent about redundant inner-city buildings standing empty when they could usefully be brought back into service as ‘community’ assets: teaching / recreational spaces; modern lending libraries; social / indoor sports centres etc. In many cases, a pilot study concluded, the local authority owners didn’t have the personnel or funding to achieve such laudable targets. But the changes didn’t happen overnight, with one CAT pioneer describing the challenge as ‘not for the feint-hearted’.
Seventeen years on, and successfully achieved CAT schemes are now in their hundreds. The Pavilion on Hereford’s Castle Green, which last month saw the successful completion of its £2.1m refurbishment, following formal transfer by the local authority owner, is the city’s most ambitious, with all credit going to Friends of Castle Green for masterminding the 28-month project. Project architect was Oliver Steels of Errand Studio. The Stronger Hereford campaign initiated no fewer than 15 major projects – some CAT category - ranging from the current re-configuring of both the Shire Hall (to become the City Library) and the old Broad Street Library (to become a City Museum), to greener travel systems, a cycle track and a skatepark. The Pavilion will be Herefordshire Council’s 25th successful Community Asset Transfer.
Along with Sir Robert Smirke’s mock-Jacobean mansion The Fosse overlooking Hereford Castle’s moat, the tastefully refurbished Castle House Hotel and Hereford Cathedral School’s award-winning Moat teaching block, the copper-clad riverside Pavilion now completes a stunning architectural quartet. The newest addition but certainly the oldest.
According to FoCG, former uses of The Pavilion have included: a public bathhouse; a Regency Reading Room; living accommodation for Castle Green’s groundsman, a training centre for the city’s Youth Canoe Club, an extension to Hereford Art College, offices for the community newspaper In Our Time and a Hoople Staff Training Centre. The new lessees intend to use it for a broad-ranging programme of sustainable community activities; as a historical introduction for visitors to one of the city’s most complete architectural areas; a café / coffee bar for exploring tourists; and to be hired out for social functions. Doubtless the community’s hugely popular Guy Fawkes Night celebrations will be retained. The amalgam of styles and constructional details is delightful; the copper burnishing is inspired.
One local CAT contender that tragically slipped through the net is Churchill House, the Grade II listed
villa overlooking Churchill Gardens which is likely to be put up for sale by Herefordshire Council, despite the stated condition (at the time of its purchase) that it was ‘for the enjoyment of the citizens of Hereford’. It endured half-a-dozen unsuccessful community uses – from a Period Costumes Museum to a picture gallery celebrating the life and works of the artist Brian Hatton. All were miserable failures. There is no record of whether HC offered Churchill House to community groups on the College Estate before making the decision to sell.
Aural enhancement Castle Green is rich in historical fragments – more than any other part of the cathedral city. But visitors need assistance, such as the admirable Guild of City Guides, founded by Jean O’Donnell. So why doesn’t Stronger Hereford produce an audio-guide for visitors, perhaps scripted by local historian David Whitehead, with commentary by the county’s very own Shakesperean actress Alexandra James? There’s Jemma Pearson’s famous statue of Edward Elgar leaning on his Sunbeam bicycle in the Cathedral Close; the Junior School’s half-timbered Tuck Shop; the aforementioned Fosse; the former Castle’s 5m-high man-made ramparts (no trace remains of the castle itself); the nation’s only Admiral-less Nelson monument (in 1809 the committee exhausted its budget on the construction of Thomas Hardwicke’s column and couldn’t afford to commission a likeness of the naval hero); the delicate Victoria footbridge; Castle Street’s rash of Grade II listed town houses; and Church Street, the city’s favourite pedestrianised shopping area.
And now a gleaming copper-clad Pavilion. Nick Jones
Dear Editor,
I have recently read the review of The Swan at Hay in your 2025 issue.
Speaking as someone who, along with my wife and other of our friends, patronises and thoroughly enjoys The Swan, I was taken aback by this piece.
Firstly, it was headed “Food,” but having begrudgingly conceded that the food was “tolerable,” the author proceeded in most of the rest of the article to lambast the furnishings.
My wife and I have stayed in many more lavish and luxurious (and significantly more expensive) hotels, but The Swan remains for us among the most pleasant to overnight and eat in. “Mr P,” who, I take it, has not stayed here, does not mention the friendliness of the staff (who coped splendidly when under Covid restrictions), the lovely garden, the excellent and convenient location in town, let alone the quiet, pleasant bedrooms. Clearly his criteria for judging the hotel were sadly limited.
The Swan in my opinion is not a “shame” for Hay, but one of its great assets, and it is not The Swan but the reviewer that is in need of a new direction.
The persona “Mr Pernickety” - ie fastidious and nit-picking - is preening and self-indulgent, which might make for “a bit of fun,” but in this case it might damage a decent establishment. I go to enjoy myself, not to be out to find fault, whilst a reviewer should be impartial to be worth his, or her, salt.
D G Matthews
Mr Pernickety is always sorry if a reader finds fault with one of his reviews. He apologises to Mr Matthews and to any other readers offended by his ‘preening’, which was certainly unintentional.
Mr P considers it his job to offer potential clients an overview of the whole eating experience at a particular venue. Food is only part of this; as important is ambience, as expressed in lighting, the visual appeal and comfort of the furniture, colour and style of decoration and the suitability of any music being played.
Mr P has re-read his review and stands by every word of it. However, if Mr Matthews enjoys the surroundings at The Swan as they are, then The Swan is for him. It is not for a humble hack to tell him where to eat or sleep.
Nevertheless, Mr P makes no apology for a balanced and objective review. If readers want reviews that make no criticisms, they need look no further than their local glossy County magazine, which will publish puffery and never tell the readers what’s wrong with a place. Or ask Chat gpt to write a review of Dining at The Swan.
Meanwhile, Mr Pernickety acknowledges Mr Matthews’ guidance on the tricky task of restaurant reviewing.
Mr Pernickety
AT a time of uncertainty and gloom around most of the world, including our own little archipelago, reasons for optimism aren’t easy to find.
Many sane, free-thinking individuals like myself have existed in a state of chronic depression since 2016. During that year, an ill-conceived and ultimately non-democratic British referendum prompted a nervous Government to make plans for quitting Europe. I describe the vote as undemocratic because in those countries that regularly hold referenda, a majority of at least 50% - if not 66% - of all those eligible to vote (whether or not they choose to do so) is required to alter that nation’s constitution. Under the crass terms of our referendum on Europe, when the whole electorate was asked, “Do you want to alter the British Constitution and leave Europe,” just 38% said “Yes please.” This led to one of the most undemocratic courses of action ever undertaken in the United Kingdom.
Later that same year, to the dismay of all fair-minded and compassionate people, Donald Trump was elected President of the United States for the first time.
Both these major public votes were dominated by ugly displays of mendacity, insult and naked tribalism. They were not driven by logic and debate but by self-interest and bigotry. Tribalism is a regressive human trait – an enemy of evolution. It is an innate human characteristic which, if sapiens is to succeed in the experiment of human existence, must be consciously identified and expunged from our lives. This is not to deny our human nature, but to build on our evolutionary imperative to become part of a better species of homo sapiens. You don’t have to be a woke liberal to think that not going to war is better than seeking violent confrontation. In this too, though. there are reasons for hopefulness. It can be seen that the large majority of us who do not harbour psychopathic leanings towards violence, passionately desire to live in a peaceful world. Despite this, self-serving leaders and wannabe leaders systematically manipulate the public by increasing polarisation of ideas, instead of fostering toleration, compromise and forgiveness. In reality, there is far more common ground among humanity then there is difference.
Very few Brits, even among wokest lefties, think that uncontrolled numbers of non-nationals entering the country is a good thing, while we suffer from the great lack of social housing that was spawned by the ‘Right to Buy’ policies of the 1980s.
At the same time, the majority of British people have benefited, and positively enjoyed the cultural and job-filling bonuses derived from the way in which we have welcomed a wide diversity of peoples into Britain. Anyone who has spent time in a care home, or a hospital will be aware of the essential roles they’ve filled. Although we have welcomed this diversity, there are those who still resent people of different ethnicities, but they are becoming fewer as older bigotry dies out; which is another reason to be cheerful.
A recent rash of destructive Nationalism that has prompted the painting of red crosses of St George on traffic roundabouts is a sign of aggressive tribalism. Nevertheless, pride in British culture and achievements –call it Patriotism – need not be these things. Especially if we remain open to applauding the skills, talents and ethos of other British ethnicities. Those hostile to an influx of eastern Europeans will nevertheless cheer on a talented and intelligent tennis star like Emma Raducanu, while, seventy years after the arrival of the Windrush, and all the ugly prejudice that accompanied it, those who resented its immigrants cannot deny the success of many black politicians, musicians and entrepreneurs, nor the great boost given to English International football and the Premier League by the skills and strategic talents of black footballers, and in some cases their impressive stance over social issues. I have the impression that to be black in Britain, although not yet perfect, is much less uncomfortable than it once was – another reason for optimism.
Brits can be proud, too, of their creative record in the arts, sciences and financial activities, which still give a lead around the globe. That we have seceded manual manufacturing jobs to other, poorer nations is an inevitable result of changing demographics, although there is something that could be done to rebuild and employ labour intensive craft skills here by choosing things that we use in our domestic lives which respect this human input in a way William Morris and Bernard Leach encouraged. The use of everyday objects that reflect the craft and artistry of other human beings is good for the spirit and can deliver valuable pleasure every time they’re used and handled. Since the start of autumn I’ve been using a salt-glazed, stone-wear bowl made in Radnorshire from which to scoff my morning porridge. This makes it taste better, and simply picking up the bowl always delivers a little frisson – well worth the premium paid over the cost of a mass-produced vessel.
In the Marches we can be proud, too, that during H-Art week there were hundreds of creative venues in which to indulge a love of things created by human hands and minds – woven, sculpted, painted, turned, carved and thrown – all offering reasons to be cheerful.

Film of the month is the darkly comic thriller from one half of the maverick Coen brothers, Ethan, co-scripted with his wife (and co-editor), Tricia Cooke. It follows glamorously gay private detective, Honey O’Donahue (Margaret Qualley, The Substance) driving around 1970s Bakersfield in her fab Chevy Camaro following leads on a few grisly murders – well one may not be – pursuing a lustful affair with a female cop (Aubrey Plaza, T.V’s The White Lotus) and dealing with her wonderfully dysfunctional family all of whom are ultimately connected to a gleefully corrupt and sexually rapacious evangelist, Rev. Drew Devlin (Chris Evans (Materialists, Capt. America). The script is frequently laugh-out-loud hilarious, the plot clever and twisty, production design spot-on and with typical Coen skill, a relentless pace. It’s also interspersed with another Coen trademark, eye-watering violence and perhaps with a nod to avowedly bi-sexual Cooke, some steamy sex scenes incited by Honey, none of which detract from the film’s huge entertainment value.

Normally I’m wary of historical dramas, especially ones adopting soapy formulae, but having read an interview with Downton’s perennial scriptwriter Julian Fellowes I had a perverse personal interest in spending 143 minutes in the vast company of actors who have variously populated his period oeuvre. Those familiar with Downtonism will get the background to this (alleged) concluding episode but basically it’s the 1930s, the owners of the elegant, titular pile (Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern) are in dire financial straits and trying to stall the inevitable. There are of course major sub-plots involving both snooty aristos and conniving servants but the joy – yes, gulp, joy – of the film is derived from Fellowes’ witty script and the performances of the many prominent actors – many reprising previous roles some, like Paul Giametti and Arty Froushan (as Noel Coward) and a scene-stealing Simon Russell-Beale are new to the game in which as one character puts it “… the past is a more comfortable place than the future.”

15 years after their last concert, the legendary mockumentary band Spinal Tap reform for a stadium gig in New Orleans… only because ‘An Evening With Stormy Daniels’ had been cancelled! So we have a plumper, visibly aged trio of Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Nigel Tuffnell (Chris Guest) still trying to big-up their failed, heavy-metal existence and once again being grilled by documentarian Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner). In fact after so far having got through 11, or is it 12, drummers, they haven’t entirely abandoned musical careers… if you count pub folkies and a mariachi bands as careers. Scripted by Guest, McKeen and Reiner, who again also directs, this consists of excruciatingly funny claims of past successes, an inherent lack of self-awareness coupled with the inevitable onstage blunders and with straight-faced cameos from the likes of Paul McCartney and Elton John, it’s dialled up to 11.

IT’S good to see a hopeful new eatery taking root in tricky local soil, like some fresh young flower pushing forth with the question “Will I survive in feeding the fickle folk of the Marches?”
Mr P has spotted a recent arrival in Hereford’s Bridge Street, Mea Via Pasta Bar. Five months ago Naples-born Sonny Castaldo, an imaginative purveyor of freshly made pasta, decided to upgrade from his busy space in the gloom of Hereford Butter Market (those responsible for which, Mr P suggests, should visit Shrewsbury Market Hall to see how it could be done.)
Bridge Street is in a quarter of Hereford optimistically named “Left Bank” when it was redeveloped twenty-five years ago. It’s now a skeleton of its developers’ hubristic dreams. The concept was a vanity project undertaken by Dutch woman, Monique Heijn, wife of a Dutch retailing magnate, Albert Heijn. Mrs Heijn had previously been married to two Herefordshire men – a farmer and a lawyer. She had now returned to the county to show her new husband what a fine place it was to live and, perhaps, to do a bit of flaunting. In a flurry of development, she and her husband bought, built and refurbished dozens of major properties in the city, including the old, dilapidated motorcycle dealers by the bridge. The Left Bank was planned as a complex of restaurants, bars and speciality shops. Glamorously conceived, they opened in 2000 but, with no identifiable personality, they didn’t find traction with the local community and soon failed. The Heijns, disillusioned and, presumably a little out of pocket, disposed of the Left Bank in 2007. It’s hard to keep track of the traders who have come and gone since, but into one of these vacant slots , Signor Castaldo has moved his pasta making paraphernalia and done up the dining space in a relaxed, soft focused way to deliver the best his cucina has to offer.
Mr P has long been a fan of the robust flavours of Italian cuisine and has experimented widely with it, sometimes to his own detriment. Once, as a young man in a student restaurant south of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, looking for a cheap dinner, he saw something on the menu he hadn’t tried before.
He summoned a waiter. “Omelette a Piacere, per favore,” he ordered in his best cod-Italian, wondering what he was going to eat.
“Si signor, questo?” the waiter asked expectantly.
“A piacere!” Mr P uttered testily, stabbing a finger at the word on the meu.
“Si! Questo?” the waiter came back, more testily, just as Mr P realised, with reddening face, that “a piacere” was Italian for “of your choice.”
Prompted, perhaps, by his own rufescence, Mr P mumbled sheepishly, “Al Pomodoro, per favore.”
There were no such scenes when Mr P and his Lovely Companion dined at Mea Via in early September. Walking up from the bridge on a quiet Thursday, they passed several deserted snackeries, or face-stufferies, to fi nd
Mea Via, warm, busy and pretty much full. Luckily Mr P had booked in a pseudonym (his own) and sat with his LC at a small table next to the wall. There were soft circular wall-lights and surfaces of beige and brown, not colourful, but restful. The place the service exuded the reassuring ambience of a family run trattoria.
Sonny, the young chef/proprietor arrived in 2017 to work at England’s Gate in Bodenham before seeking more adventure in London, at Italian and Japanese restaurants. With love and natural talent, he honed his skills in pasta making, creating his own strongly distinctive sauces, often with a an unexpected and uplifting Japanese accent.
Mr Ps’ only complaint about the wonderfully unusual menu is that the print was so small, he could barely read it with his knackered old minces. With the LC’s help, his choice of starter was Suppli – a breadcrumbed tomato and rice croquette filled with smoked scamorza cheese and bursting with flavour, like the LC’s Korokke, a Japanese potato croquette with nduja sausage dressed in Katsubishi citrus mayo – surprising and delicious – she said happily.
For her main course she enjoyed the contrasts in her Green Pappardella with red onion ragu, ricotta and pine nuts. Mr P’s tagliatelle, light, fresh and eggy, came with a pork ragu, smoked aubergine and ricotta – a delicious feast. Just as sensational was a shared side order of Fried Courgettes served with lemon and a blend of seven Japanese spices – a real taste bomb. With his meal, Mr P relished a glass of full, rounded dark berry Primitivo, his favourite grape.
To end their dinner, he and the LC shared a Tiramisu –always a reliable test – that was made delicious and extra creamy by the use of egg yolks only. It was as good as Martyn’s at The Angel in Ludlow.
The chef here is a Maestro in the making.

YOU may say what you like about the Green Party and its shortcomings, but something they are not short of is leaders. The only one of them I have met in recent times is Natalie Bennett, who is now in a comfortable seat in the House of Lords. I recall her as affable, antipodean and matey.
I must correct myself, because I think I may also have met Caroline Lucas. I am not saying she is not memorable, but she had an obvious problem in being spread far too thinly.
She was just too busy being both party leader and, for some years, the Greens’ only MP, albeit with an extremely desirable seat on the south coast, only an hour or so’s travelling time from Westminster.
Today’s Green Party has just four members in the commons. Their new national leader is Zack Polanski. The Observer describes him as “a 42 year-old gay Jewish vegan”. Compared with Lucas and Bennett, Polanski is flamboyant, or at least noticeable.
Of what relevance Polanski’s sexuality is, I have no idea. The Observer rather coyly tells us that his “family partner” is called Richie. Polanski’s eating habits are obviously more germane to his role as leader of the Greens. By which I mean that no hack from a tabloid has yet managed to discover that he has a secret predilection for steak, or some other equally unsustainable foodstuff.
The Observer also calls him a populist. Does that mean that he is someone who courts popularity? I guess it must do. But isn’t that what all politicians do?
To be fair to Polanski, he does at least seem to have won some media attention. And that is quite a useful start if you are in a party that is trying to get elected, or at least to seriously grow its numbers in parliament.
A distinct plus point for Polanski is to not be part of the previous joint leadership of…er… Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns. Does anyone know anything about them? Presumably, even among the Greens, not nearly enough people had a detailed knowledge, or even a clear image, of them.
Otherwise, how come they and their supporters were so comprehensively trounced by Polanski and his backers in the Green Party leadership election at the start of September.
So how does Polanski compare with other leading figures among the Greens? And what did we know about those other leading people? The problem the Greens have had up to now is they have been so keen to be politically correct, and not in any way like other Westminster parties, that they have in the past gone for a kind of collective leadership.
The problem with that, if you have only four MPs in the commons, is that almost all the members are at the
of them to shine, to win column inches in the papers, or gain airtime in the news bulletins.
But Zack and his Westminster colleagues should not lose heart. In my early days in journalism the Lib Dems were a tiny group in the commons, varying from half a dozen to maybe 18 or 20 in number.
But one of the most striking outcomes of the 2024 election was that the Lib Dems were returned in big numbers. They became by far the biggest liberal parliamentary party in living memory, unless you were alive sometime in the nineteenth century, or the early twentieth, many decades before the liberals amalgamated with the social democrats.
At the last election the Lib Dems won 72 seats, which made them very comfortably the third largest party in the commons. OK, I know I should be writing about the Greens, but the UK’s first-past-the-post system makes the leap from a small handful of seats to several score remarkably easy.
While the Greens have only four commons seats right now, it will take only a small percentage increase in their numbers to win them scores of seats next time around. Always assuming, of course, that there is no sudden renaissance for the Scottish National Party. And assuming also that Labour somehow manages to stop shooting itself in the foot, as though it has some kind of death wish!
The Tories and the smaller parties have all been given a fair wind by Labour’s incredibly dull performance in the last 15 months. And it is anyone’s guess how long Labour’s dismal showing will continue. But it looks as though it will take something large and seismic to get Keir Starmer’s party back on track. And I hardly dare even mention the existential threat to all the established parties now apparently posed by Nigel Farage and his Reform Party.
