Several Circular Song Cycles
1. Ludlow Brewery to the Tally Ho via Clee St Margaret
Okay, we are setting off on the first of Pete’s circular cycle rides with added music. It’s hot so pack a water bottle. The bar at Ludlow Brewery is full of people but you are not having a pint as you have a load of cycling to do! Come out of the Brewery, head down to Corve St turn right and then fork right (never mind the NO ENTRY signs).
Turn right into Bromfield Rd, under the railway bridge and left at the mini roundabout, then onto Fishmore Road. After 1/2 ml, Pearce Cycles is on your right (stop here if you need any spares) and then take the right fork signposted Clee St Margaret. You are now in for a sharp climb followed by a long slow climb, which rewards you with stunning views in all directions. Just stick on this delightful quiet road for 7 or 8 miles until Clee St Margaret, then keep turning left till you are on the road to Abdon. After 1/2 mile take a left turn to Boulden. Keep your eyes open for the stunning simplicity of the 12th century church, Heath Chapel on your right. In Boulden it’s time to stop and have a drink and some excellent nosh at the Tally Ho. Then pedal on, via Sutton and Hayton. It’s pretty gentle all the way back to the fork by Pearce cycles, and from there you know your way. If you play your cards right, it will be music night at the Brewery. Gigs in August include Presteigne’s own Press Gangers, Remi Harris and also The Dirty Rockin Scoundrels. On September 20, The Blues and Roots Club feature The Bob Stills Band.
From Ludlow to the Tally Ho: 10.2mls 630ft up 791ft down. From Tally Ho to Ludlow: 8.4 mls mostly flat (use this route both ways if you hate hills!)
2. The Boat Inn Penalt and into The Forest Of Dean
This route begins and ends at the picaresque Boat Inn on the Wye at Penalt. It takes in a chunk of the Forest of Dean. If you choose to go deeper into the forest don’t blame me if you get lost. Start in the car park by the footbridge at Redbrook and head back down the main road towards Monmouth. At the end of the village turn right and up the long hill to Newland, then Clearwell Castle. A quick burn down the B4228 brings you
to St Briavels. In the pretty village centre is the excellent George Inn. Head out the back of the pub and follow your nose downhill ...zoom, then turn left at the main road, and you’re at the Bigsweir Bridge. Cross the river, turn right and it’s just a flat 3.7 ml stroll back to the Boat. The first bit is tarmac, but when the road heads off uphill you can continue on a track just 50yds up from the river. However, if you care to ignore the slightly threatening notices from the fishing community, you can avail yourself of a trim grassy motorway right alongside the river. The day I was there not a single fisherman to be seen the entire length. Try to hit the picaresque pub on a Thursday, as that’s music night. Ist Thursday Guest Band night. 2nd Jam session. 3rd Guest Band night. 4th Folk session. From Redbrook to the bridge via Clearwell: 9.6mls 771up 771 down. From Bigsweir to The Boat: 3.7mls flat.
3. The Six Bells and back via The Bridges, Rattlinghope
This route is on quiet lanes, but unfortunately there’s no clever way of escaping Bishops Castle without plodding along the A488 for the first mile. So, out of the Six Bells, down to the 488, turn left towards Shrewsbury. At Lydham, just after Harvest Wholefoods, turn right down a single track lane, straight past Linley Hall on your left, then turn left sign-posted Cold Hill and The Bog(!) and after 1/4 mile fork right for Cold Hill. From here until the main road to Rattlinghope I saw not a single motor. In fact, one of the farmers en route was so confident that nothing was coming he had parked his trailer of hay in the middle of the single track road while he unloaded it. So, a couple of right turns on this fabulous little lane then hit the main road just south of The Bridges at Rattlinghope. As always on a sunny day, lots of hikers and bikers at this recently renovated pub. To get back to B.C. I recommend a slightly different route. Go back down the road towards B.C but take the 3rd on the right, rather than the 2nd you came in on. This leads up over the hill to Norbury. The right turn in Norbury brings you back to Linley Hall and you know where you are. Best time to hit the Six Bells is 4.30 on Sunday. Grab a pint and the music starts at 5.00.
Upcoming bands: August 17 Dangerous Dave, 24 Eddie Gartry, 31 Shades of Grey and September 7 our band, Little Rumba. From Six Bells to The Bridges: 8.7 mls 620ft up 394ft down. From the Bridges to Six Bells: 8mls 354ft up 581ft down. Don’t miss the Sheep Music gig celebrating new bar/storage shed. Pub quiz, and children’s games. Live music featuring 8 piece Dutch band - Broken Brass and local heroes Home of the Free. August 16th Wents Meadow, Presteigne.

A Brief History of Beer
THE Department of Irrelevant Studies has been investigating the art of brewing beer; which is, of course, easy – the brewing, obvs, not the investigating, which is deep and taxing. The fluid has been around for a long time. Cavepeople discovered it when first they left a few seeds to rot in a coconut-shell of water in the back of the family cavern, returning to it in a drought, swigging the contents, then lurching confidently into the night to tangle with a sabretooth tiger. Ug is now a fossil covered in toothmarks but it was great while it lasted. Investigators of step pyramids in ancient Egypt have been surprised to find, in those little rainbowy bottles of Egyptian glass dating from the time of early pharaohs, residues of fermented barley that can only be left over from prehistoric potations of wreck-the-hoose. And by the time history rolls round to the Vikings, the prevalence of ale was driving the world just about mad. The monks of Northumbria quaked at rude songs sung in time with the oar-beats of longships reeking of fermented grains. True, the beer was probably more like rotting porridge than the bright and sparkling substance inhaled by the modern toper; but it was beer, and it had Arrived in Britain.
Brightness and sparkle in beer is fairly new. Until a hundred years ago most pubs brewed their own, and in the less prosperous corners of this green and pleasant some pretty murky brews, flat, instinct with acetone and toxic yeasts, would arrive in the mug. Bad beer eventually drove out good. The age of homebrew petered out, and the age of the big battalions and their massproduced hogwash took over. There was good stuff – Bass, obviously, and Young’s in London, and Adnams in East Anglia. But the greedier brewers, more interested in what their product cost than what it was worth, invented the pressurised metal keg. Before long the world was hipdeep in fizzy bat’s urine like Watney’s Red Barrel, with Camra fighting a rearguard action in trenches full of the hiss of steam engines, the tramp of morris dancers and the drone of Fabian Society meetings.
It was into this unpromising universe that Peter Amor launched himself some forty years ago, when he took over the Nag’s Head in Canon Pyon and started brewing. The Nag’s Head begat the Wye Valley Brewery, and the Wye Valley Brewery begat a host of imitators, many of them brilliant, up and down the Marches, as well as Butty Bach, the bitter of choice, refreshing carol singers, cricketers and rock and roll bands the length and breadth of the debatable lands between Wales and England.
New and sinister things, however, had begun to happen. A generation unused to nut-brown beer served at room temperature was seduced by the industrial brewers to a lot of pale-yellow fizz with origins in southern Europe, where it had been brewed for a populace with tastebuds wrecked by sour ruby from the dry hills. There had also come into being various craft beers, confected from weird ingredients by neophiliac brewers for drinkers with an exaggerated sense of fashion. The word ‘bitter’, long used to describe, er, ordinary beer, became deemed to mean ‘nasty’ and became subject to trigger warnings. Something had to be done.
So a lot of beers previously known as bitter have come to be described as ‘amber ale’. The weaker among them are known as session beers, the idea being that you can absorb the seven-pint aperitif while hanging on to something resembling consciousness. The Wye Valley Brewery, surfing the zeitgeist as usual, have not been slow to catch this wave. In tribute to Amor’s brewing roots they have changed the name of their Wye Valley Bitter to Pyoneer (geddit?) and reduced the alcohol content from 3.7% to 3.1%. Frankly it is a handy wee drop, though nothing will ever equal the quiet majesty of Butty Bach. Beer is no longer an adjunct to fighting sabre-tooth tigers or barbecuing Northumbrian monks. But it has hung on to its idiosyncracies; and in spite of the efforts of Carlsbergs and the rest of them, diversity rules up and down the pubs of the Marches, provided you choose your pub with a bit of care. Take the New Inn in Pembridge. No? Well, how about the Corners in Kingsland, or for a more diverse experience the Barrels in Hereford or the Sun in Leintwardine –
What? Oh. Had lost the thread. Pint of Butty Bach, please. Cheers.

Cultural leviathan
THE rise-and-rise of East London’s former brownfield enclave of Stratford seems to be unstoppable. The late Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Royal Stratford East; the 2012 Olympic Park, including the late Zaha Hadid’s curvaceous Aquatics Centre; the 1650-capacity ABBA Voyage Arena; the 80,000-capacity London Stadium –which doubles as West Ham’s home ground; Allies & Morrison’s London College of Fashion. Last year saw the completion of Sadlers Wells East, a stunning new performance space for Sadlers Wells Ballet (designed by the Irish practice O’Donnell + Tuomey), probably the largest all-brick creation since Colin St John Wilson’s British Library opened at St Pancras in 1998. In close proximity will be the BBC’s new Music Studios, due to relocate from Maida Vale next year.
And now, dwarfing them all, comes Stratford’s Cultural Leviathan – the V&A’s £65-million East Storehouse - New York architects Diller Scofidio & Renfro’s competitionwinning 16,000sq m space, housing a quarter of a million art objects and 350,000 books (the UK’s Austin-Smith:Lord were Executive Architects) which opened its doors to the public at the end of last month. Externally, its fortress-like facades give little away: this is certainly not Stratford’s answer to Bilbao’s Guggenheim. The new Storehouse is part of East Bank, the planned £1.3bn arts, culture and education expansion of Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with V&A East Museum scheduled to open next Spring.
DS&R’s bold competition-winning approach was to revive the concept, much favoured by amateur Victorian collectors, of a great Cabinet of Curiosities (Wunder Kammer): huge awe-aspiring themed displays, spread around three levels of the central atrium, of some of the parent V&A’s prized items. The huge space is reminiscent of that cavernous warehouse in the conclusion of Raiders of the Lost Arc. An unexpected funding ‘windfall’ came from the sale of Blythe House, a redundant west London storage space which formerly held many of the V&A treasurers.
One of the new Stratford landmark’s star exhibits will undoubtedly be the fully-preserved 500 sq ft office suite
and boardroom designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s for the American businessman and philanthropist Edgar J Kaufmann, who was the original commissioning client of Falling Water, probably the most famous private house built in the 20th century. The museum acquired the office suite in 1974. The commission came at a time when Lloyd Wright was much taken with oriental designs and patterns. The result (now re-assembled by craftsmen in the Stratford Storehouse) is an intricate marquetry mosaic of nearly 200 panels of veneered Cyprus plywood.
Trophy hunter Last year (under the headline Father Figure) I paid tribute to the 91-year-old Belgian Marcel Raymaekers, the probable originator of the now-popular architectural salvage movement. Now a second contender has emerged, in the unlikely figure of the British Modernist Sir Frederick Gibberd, designer of Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral (consecrated in 1967), aka Paddy’s Wigwam. During a recent episode of Michael Portillo’s long-running train journeys series on TV, viewers were given a whistle-stop tour of Harlow New Town, master-planned by Gibberd in the 1950s. In a quiet rural hamlet near the Modernist new town Portillo discovered Gibberd’s Essex hideaway holiday home, surrounded by 9 acres of landscaped gardens. And there, nestling amongst the trees, was a pair of 22’-high Corinthian columns, complete with capitols. Even the normally unflappable Portillo was taken aback. “How on earth did these get here?” he asked his guide. “Sir Frederick had been commissioned to re-design the frontage of Coutts Bank in The Strand, replacing its classical façade with modern glass. So he had them taken down and transported here to his garden outside Harlow!” Rather like the ‘lost’ Euston Arch, one wonders what happened to the rest.

a view from the marches
Sacrifices to the Sun
OUR ancestors, clad in bear skins and plastered with woad, historically paid elaborate homage to the Sun. Perhaps they understood intuitively mankind’s finely balanced relationship with the mighty golden orb. We should take heed of the Pagan view of the sun for, not only does it supply us and the world with all the energy we need and consume, it also has the power to fry us to a frazzle if we don’t look after Mother Earth’s strong protective shield from its most destructive rays. But this protection has been significantly compromised over the last century or so by the level of heavy industry that has taken over the world.
I would guess that most readers of this thinkingperson’s guide to entertainment and mind-improvement in the Marches, are not climate change deniers, especially those who regularly read Julian O’Halloran’s authoritative column in this paper which warns us of potential ecological disasters.
And like me, these readers probably know that they are doing nothing like enough to prevent these disasters. We are suckers for the cheapness and convenience of plastic water bottles, bubble wrap, outdoor chairs, and cheap faux-crocodile handbags. And thousands of other objects which we could easily live without. Drinking from plastic bottles of Coca Cola makes you fat and flatulent and creates indestructible waste – all environmentally damaging. But we are reluctant to give up few, if any, of these conveniences. We are spending too much time in cars when we could be on trains, or we take cheap EasyJet flights to places we don’t really need to go. We grumble about the ugliness of wind farms on prominent hilltops. We campaign against the use of pylons to transport cheap natural energy from where it is made to where it is needed. We object to the disruption to some bird species that would occur if a power generating barrier was built across the Severn estuary, although the rise in the earth’s temperature may well make these birds extinct long before homo sapiens.
While these thoughts may depress readers, for which I apologise, they are not alarmist; they are essentially optimistic in recognising that we can change ourselves and our attitudes enough to save our precious planet, before Elon has to whisk us all off to Mars. Despite the loudly expressed doubts of the wise old Statesman currently infesting the White House, there is an overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and won’t be escaped if we don’t act forcefully against it NOW.
At least one of the great successes of the beleaguered High Street in the last twenty years has been the growth of the charity shops, which exist primarily to recycle clothing and other household stuff – sometimes several times over – that would cost the environment to produce new, while providing a substantial income to some of our finest national and local charities.
There are other ways in which we need to be more tolerant and forgiving in seeing our fellow sapiens retain their survival vigour. The most crushing factor in the lives of the poor in Britain is the desperate lack of housing that was brought about by a former government’s extraordinary decision to sell off the nation’s council house stock in the 1980s – a policy which I was deeply disappointed to hear Michael Heseltine defend strongly when he appeared in an awkward interview with Matt Frei at Hay Festival last month.
The perpetrators of the policy were either just too dim to see the obvious consequences of depriving the nation of an admirable source of truly affordable housing, or they simply didn’t care in the face of political expediency. The nation is paying the price now.
It is very tough for people to make a living or bring up children when they have no permanent home, and this leads to a great number of social problems that have to be paid for elsewhere– in health care, social care, benefits, law enforcement and related costs.
It’s not fair or reasonable anymore to deny the possibility of new housing because it will spoil one’s view, which is an inevitable result of dealing with this catastrophic crisis. There will always be a plethora of other views to enjoy. No doubt early nineteenth century toffs in London moaned about fields on the outskirts being blighted by row upon row of workers’ little terraced houses in Fulham, where now they can’t wait to snap them and house their daughters in them.
In any case, there is no reason why affordable rented housing should look hideous. It’s a matter of spending judiciously on architects’ design and imagination. I don’t want to see new building in open fields beside my home, but I must accept that it’s vital for our population that we make these compromises with our own sense of self-importance. A pragmatic and generous acceptance of this reality would make our country a far better place for all of us to live.

FRIENDSHIP (15) – 100MINS
As distributors roll out their animations and super heroics aimed at kids, it’s slim pickings for grown up films during summer’s dog days but there are a few notable exceptions and this excruciatingly funny bromance is one of them. Tim Robinson, who you may’ve seen in his bonkers Netflix series I Think You Should Leave, plays somewhat boring everyman Craig failing to adequately bond with his son and immune to the needs of his wife (wonderfully deadpan Kata Mara) who accidentally hits on his wisecracking T.V, weatherman neighbour, Austin (Paul Rudd, The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Craig is frankly smitten with Austin’s lifestyle – he has a rock band for example – and conversely Austin rather takes pity on Craig and brings him into his aimable social fold… until he doesn’t. And when Austin says he’s backing off Craig gets desperate, triggering some toe-curling comedic exchanges executed with a fine deftness of touch by big-screen debut writer/director Andrew DeYoung.

Another tale of unpredictable same-sex alliances, although in Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s directorial debut it begins as a dissertation on the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship. So we have cantankerous, sardonic wheelchair-bound Rose (Fiona Shaw) seeking salvation from her mysterious, maybe psychosomatic illness at an expensive clinic on the Spanish coast whilst being attended to by her 20-something daughter, Sofia (Emma Mackey, Barbie) who we gradually discover has demons of her own. A chance meeting with a free if darkly troubled spirit, Ingrid (Vicky Krieps, Corsage) releases Ingrid’s uncertain sexual and emotional needs, all the while overseen by the equally needy and critical Rose. Better known as a screenwriter – e.g. last month’s The Salt Path – Lenkiewicz’s script tantalisingly unpeels the emotional onions of the three protagonists and the performances are equally measured and ultimately revealing, but for me it’s seasoned actress Shaw who steals the show with her finest screenwork since T.V’s Killing Eve

The Swan Hotel at Hay-on-Wye
THIS month Mr Pernickety returns to the Swan at Hay for the first time in over ten years, He hadn’t heard that it had changed ownership since then, sold by the notorious Mackintosh family to The Interesting Hotels Group, a disparate collection of hotels around the UK, including the enjoyable (although not perfect) Llangoed Hall. However, The Swan’s website is reticent about this and mysteriously describes itself as ‘a privately owned, independent hotel’. The previous owners, the Mackintoshes, were a predatory clan who would seek out a licensed premises which they could buy cheaply, get the licence removed so they could sell it on as a private dwelling for at least twice as much as they’d paid. They did it with The Ancient Camp Inn at Ruckhall near Hereford and tried very hard to do the same with the Bull’s Head in Craswall. Here, thankfully, they failed as the authorities held firm, knowing that there was a need for a pub in that remote place. It was bought by some top-notch operators who serve wonderful food, much of which they produce on their own farm, and still keep the lovely ancient bar much as it has been for centuries.
But back to the Swan, where years ago, Mr P had a great evening, watching sublime lyricist and singer, Kit Hesketh-Harvey and his accompanist perform their wonderful repertoire. (Mr P suggests that readers watch him on YouTube.)
And in Mr Pernickety’s 2010 Guide to Eating in Hay, he reviewed The Swan, then run by Mr & Mrs Mackintosh and their daughter. It was not recommended. To quote: ‘The main dining room, despite being a highceilinged, well-proportioned space with fine tall windows overlooking the gardens has a slightly desperate air to it. The chairs look faintly French Empire, standing on an unattractive hotel carpet, beneath chandeliers with a hint of Hyacinth Bucket.’”
On this occasion, Mr P’s Lovely Companion, who had never set foot in The Swan, entered by the Market Bar, a rough jumble of ugly lumpy furniture that might have escaped from a Blackpool boarding house,
‘Oh Dear!’ she murmured to herself, sensing a less than glamorous evening ahead. She was, as ever in such matters, astutely observant. The most interesting thing about this member of the Interesting Hotels Group is that since taking over the place, the new operators have contrived to make it even drearier than it was when the last owners had it. The main dining room has been repainted, there are new plastic flowers on the windowsill, the same or similar manky old carpet is on the floor and the mean little chandeliers dangling from the ceiling remain. If the room had been full (an unlikely circumstance) the noise under the high ceiling and unbaffled walls might have been intense, at least enough to drown the monotonous beige music fuzzing from loudspeakers. The chairs and
tables were what Mr P believes are described as ‘contract’ – plain, dull and uncomfortable. In the room adjacent to the dining room there was a clutter of discarded, unused furniture, as if someone hadn’t got round to cleaning up after a party. This ambience was bound to affect a punter’s enjoyment, and Mr P is no more immune than any other.
Gloomily, he and the LC opened a menu, she chose Sweet Potato Falafels (with humus, apricot relish and pomegranate dressing, £9) and seemed to enjoy them.
Mr P did enjoy his Crispy Chilli and Mango prawns with Sriracha Sauce and Fresh Lime, which offered some interesting flavours. For a main dish he chose Pork Saltimbocca with Potato Gratin (£23). The pork was a tad dry, and slightly overcooked, but enjoyable enough. It had the demeanour of a Brakes Bros dish, but Mr P was assured that there was a real, live chef in the kitchen.
The LC somewhat to Mr P’s (unexpressed) disapproval chose a Mexican Chicken Burger with Guacamole and whatnot (£17). Mr P regrets that nearly all restaurant chickens have spent only few brief weeks of incarcerated existence before being dispatched. But the LC liked it and ate it all.
To end up they shared a Rhubarb Trifle (£7}, a sweet gooey concoction topped with nasty whipped cream, perhaps from an aerosol which, like the furniture in the bar, looked as if it had come from a Blackpool boarding house. Not a great climax or taste treat to lift the spirits in such dreary surroundings.
The Swan is a handsome stone building, completed in 1812 as a coaching inn. It’s listed Grade II and has been restored, retaining its original sash windows and fanlights. But internally it has been sadly misused for the last few decades. It would be a wonderful thing if some chaps like those who have transformed the formerly lack-lustre Rhydspence could come in and give it the treatment it needs. In fairness, the food was tolerable, if expensive, but, in essence, the place is a Jumbo Blanc, a wasted asset; and a big shame for Hay. Mr Pernickety

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Lord David Lipsey who drowned whilst swimming in the river Wye at Glasbury on 1 July. Lord David and his wife Lady Margaret were our first patrons. More important however is the loss felt by his wife, Lady Margaret and the family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

Labour Ditches Green Plan - As Reeves and Starmer
Abandon the Environment
THE Starmer government has had a long hot summer. Surely, in Broad Sheep country, it never gets that hot! But the weatherman on the BBC this morning, seemed quite emphatic. The hottest part of Britain today would be east Wales!
Where exactly is East Wales? I thought about this for a good thirty seconds, until I concluded that where I live is more or less surrounded by East Wales. Hell’s bells! We are all going to fry in an inferno! If I still lived in London, I could catch a bus to somewhere near Jermyn Street, where there used to be a gents’ tropical outfitter, called Airey and someone-or-or-other.
Airy clothes, or Airey clothes, sound like just what I need. But does any part of Broad Sheep country have a gents’ tropical outfitter, or indeed any kind of outfitter? Especially now that most people needing an item of clothing probably get M&S to deliver it to their front door. I think I once saw a gents clothing store in my nearest city, Hereford. But the apparel on display looked heavy, tweedy, and as though it would be stiflingly hot, even on a normal autumn day. Not really my cup of tea.
A heatwave may not be the perfect time to discuss Winter Fuel Payments. But someone ought to say something. The Winter Fuel Payment was never exactly a bonanza. But it was paid to millions of us pensioners each year, come hell or high water. A small but useful wodge of tenners, £200 or £300 or so. But then a new government came along, and they knew better.
So, in an act of daylight robbery, or maybe a mugging on a very dark night, the Winter Fuel Payment was snatched away from us. After an almighty political row, much of the payment, was grudgingly handed back, though not to all of us. Better off people would get the dosh, but then have it taken away again by the taxman. The sound and fury that accompanied this humiliating U-turn gave rise to a very rare sight.
It was an image of that most senior, cool and assured cabinet minister the chancellor, Rachel Reeves in tears, sitting next to the Prime Minister, while Starmer appeared oblivious of her misery. Whether or not you are an habitual Westminster watcher, this was a gripping, and even jarring, news event. The floodlights of media attention had suddenly thrown into sharp relief an act of gratuitous government meanness.
Some Labour activists will have been especially infuriated by the Starmer-Reeves antics. A while back a group of young people in their 20s and 30s mounted a demo at a Labour Party office in north London It was hardly a seismic event. And I doubt if it got any national news coverage. But these demonstrators had spotted
something which I think most Labour supporters had not really woken up to.
Their party was in the process of dismantling an environmental program which Labour had launched, with a huge fanfare only two years earlier. The Green Prosperity Plan, as Labour leaders dubbed it, had provided some badly needed positive news for the party after a dismal by-election defeat at Hartlepool. And the Plan had been seen as the ideal getaway vehicle to help the party depart at high speed away from the Jeremy Corbyn era and surge forward towards a middle-of-theroad future.
No doubt there was great glee about the Green Prosperity Plan among senior Labour folk. But it seems that, when the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, and her team scrutinised it, they began to see it as a potential disaster area. Reeves had laid great stress on the idea of sound money and balancing the books. But she and her advisors feared that the Green Prosperity Plan, with a price tag rising to £28 billion a year, might be like an iceberg capable of turning the good ship Labour into the Titanic.
The Labour constituency office which those protesters targeted was in the seat of the Labour leader himself - Sir Keir Starmer. These environmentalist activists, under the title of Green New Deal UK, may not have won national headlines, but they were, arguably, ahead of the game.
They had identified in the Labour leadership a willingness to tack and to trim, and to throw out principles and plans, where these got in the way of realpolitik. OK, maybe this is what politicians do. But, for anyone paying attention at the time, the cynical way in which the Green Prosperity Plan was junked was a harbinger of the future - and of Labour’s summer of disastrous headlines, which few would have guessed was possible at the time of Labour’s gigantic election victory in July last year.
