O lets cut through the bullshit and look at the evidence. 1. THEY know where you are all the time because of your bloody mobile phone. (Tip: I navigate round this problem by not carrying my mobile phone with me. This means they think I’m sitting at home when I’m actually in Pembroke Dock. The downside of this is nobody can phone me and I can’t phone them). 2. THEY know what you like, buy and lust after from your Google searches. They know who your friends are from your Facebook account. They know all about your repugnant views from your Twitter account. They know how much money you owe from your online banking and where you went on holiday (Disneyland Florida? Get a grip!). 3. THEY know all about your viewing and listening habits from the internet connection to your Freeview box, which means they know I watch Mystery Diners every night. Have you seen it? It’s brilliant. They get a call from some uptight restaurant owner and they fill the restaurant, kitchen, and the car park up with hidden cameras and then sit back and watch what goes on when the owners are not there. The cooks are spitting in the food and the waiters are nicking money from the tills and the barmaid’s boyfriends are a gang of Hell’s Angels who are coming in after hours and drink all the ‘top shelf’ booze and shag in the toilets. The manager is selling off the fresh fish in the car park and they confront them “Hi, I’m Charles somebody or other from Mystery Dinners and we have been filming you for the last three days” It’s great! Now where was I. Ah, yes. 4. THEY are slowly cutting off all Arts Funding except to the National Theatre and The Royal Opera House and forcing us to watch live theatre in our local village halls piped straight from that lot in London. That and global streaming of major pop concerts and sporting events will soon be our only source of culture - live theatre and live bands? Hey man, that’s so last century! 5. THEY are just on the brink of another revolution in robotics and driverless cars. So that will probably mean we become extraneous extras in the world of travel and the workplace. CONCLUSION So there you have it. We have arrived at the year 2000019 hundred and eighty four. The Brave New World is upon us and THEY have got us all trussed up into moronic, constantly electronically surveyed, drone package. But here are my questions. Now they’ve got us what do they intend to do with us? Who are THEY and are they happy with the strange new world they have created? Robots and Mushrooms T HE Great War is 100 years old: the first automated conflict; 16 million mass-produced deaths. Welcome to the modern world. Sci-fi plots often feature rogue computers and dysfunctional robots, self-aware automata who turn against their human masters, liquidate scores or millions and take over the world. Hal in 2001, Yul Brynner in Westworld, Maria in Metropolis, Enola Gay at Hiroshima. Ray Kurzweil thinks that machines will soon acquire consciousness. I am not looking forward to the selfconscious machine-gun. How will its violent software distinguish between the good, the bad, the innocent and the ugly? Robots are a short-sighted idea; they are only distinct from machines in that they fulfill our abiding desire to create obedient “life-as-we-know-its” that we can control without the obstruction of morality – imitation humans, puppets, blow-up dolls, slaves. The dead give-away is that for no good reason we give them arms and legs and creepy eyes. Thats not how real robots operate, the Mars Rovers have wheels, not feet and 4 of them to boot. No wonder we shrink from the results of our illicit desire for a mechanical domestic slave and fear that our submissive will come alive, turn on us and become a dominatrix. At its most theatening it’s the Terminator; at its most ridiculous the Japanese have created a robot that plays the violin. Unsurprisingly it plays that most expressive of human instruments - like a robot.

These images express our deep unease but they distract us from the real thing. Self-perpetuating, selfaware, artificial automatons, “malign ...systems that advance their own logic to the detriment of human freedom and autonomy “ (Max Weber) are already embedded all around us; indeed they took over the world long before WW 1. The robots that we should truly fear are covert - the multi-nationals, the churches, internet corporations, governments and Al-Qaedas. Their influence is much more invasive, insidious and widespread than the individual clanking one-place-at-a-time old-fashioned knights in armour, the half man, half machine Robocops that are the stuff of

our comic-book archetypes. They don’t need mere arms and legs – instead they have hidden mycelial networks. Through the centuries systems with the right evolutionary ground rules have outlived their creators and their original purposes and outstripped their founding morality. Once shot of those limitations they have found ever more effective ways of crippling our bodies with wage-labour, addling our brains with drugs, keeping a cyber-eye on us and defeating our consciousness with formulaic pap, all in the supreme interest of their own self-perpetuating software. They evolve according to Thatcherite logic and twisted neo-Darwinian rules in stock exchanges, law courts, laboratories and boardrooms and only where necessary do they use obvious force: The ground rules - the sociopathic primacy of the individual, human nature red in tooth and claw - often incorporate a multi-cellular design like Al-Qaeda, early Christianity or the prerevolutionary Communist party. Each cell/ franchise is self-governing and adapted to its local conditions, so that the organisation is doing many things in many places and its relations with the shadowy core are only encrypted to a very few agents, Lenin, St.Paul, the CEO, or Osama BinLaden Mk4. The cellular structure develops into nests of offshore companies in the capitalist network, or individual guerrilla cells which can be lost without damage to the core - like the “independent” catholic dioceses which can each go bankrupt so as to avoid paying paedophile damages. Their products now permeate our bodies and our minds, like drugs and like viruses, like religion: Pfizer, G4, Google, Sky(-net), Apple, Scientology, Trafigura, Monsanto, the NSA, Centrica, (is there an Eccentrica?). We are all caught in their subliminal webs. The systems herd us like sheep, and twine themselves into the human mind like ivy, like heroin, like the multi-valent mycelia of a fungus. They are parasites that have market-evolved to outlive their dazed feed-stuff, their exhausted customers, as well as the individual regimes of their temporary Popes, PMs and CEOs. Their willing servants are ciphers like Cameron, Obama, and Merkel, and the Miliband that is to come. They feed us, at least in the developed world, and farm us into our dotage (Big Pharma’s big opportunity) - but the worst aspect for the fattened-up western consumer is that their crafted viruses infect our consciousness from birth. They change who we are, and how we think, and what we feel, minute by minute. The largest biological entity on the planet is a parasite - a honey fungus, 3.5 miles across and approx. 5,000 years old, that lurks underground in the Malheur (= bad luck) National Forest in Oregon with just a few tell-tale mushrooms showing on the surface. It has cyclically nurtured and destroyed the forest above it many times in its long and malicious life. In parallel : the oldest and original multi-national is the Catholic Church. Fuelled by self-hate, (what else is the doctrine of sin, celibacy and the catch-all Original One of just being born?), revelling in torture and masochism (Christ on the Cross and all those martyrs and heretics) it has nurtured and devoured countless lives in the last 2,000 years as it

has evolved from a humanist liberation cult to being the distilled mumbo-jumbo of government, and an analog of pyramidal Capitalism acording to the usual ground rules and structures, including its own secret police - the Inquisition. There it still squats like Smaug, atop its pile of ancient treasure, deep in the vaults of the Vatican, putting up churches like mushrooms across the globe - the original market-evolved, supra-national control system, still paying homage to its new testament leftist founder in the same twisted way that the Chinese government still pays homage to Mao, whilst violating nearly everything he stood for. There have been brief periods when a privileged few gained some independence of thought, if not action, and rose above the colonialisation of the mind. However we are again losing that hard-won freedom to the extended viral reach of cloud-based capitalism and its culture, which is increasingly unfettered by any national, legal or technical boundaries or vestigial religious morality, because there is no longer enough resistance from communities, borders and countries, from socialism, the enlightenment or humanism, and there are too few places left either to speak or to hide. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re damned, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doomed, We are no longer consumers, we are the consumed. Yippee! THE LUDLOW FRINGE FESTIVAL is putting out a call for artists to exhibit as part of the Fringe Art Trail, which runs from 13th June to 5th July, and to take stalls at the Ludlow Fringe Festival Artists’ Market, which takes place in Ludlow Town Square on the 20th and 21st June. Exhibiting artists will be offered space in abandoned rooms, cafes, galleries, public spaces and historic buildings. All media welcome - painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, applied arts, film makers, performance etc. The Artists Market provides an opportunity for all artists to showcase and sell their work. TRASH (15) Echoing feel-good elements of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and certainly not to be confused with Andy Warhol’s similarly-titled 1970 sleazerama, this joint Brazilian/ British production seamlessly directed by Stephen Daldry (BILLY ELLIOTT) centres on three young ragamuffins who stumble across a cash-filled wallet in the garbage dump they forage to help support their families. The boys, played by uniformly charismatic unknowns, naturally spend the loot but then discover that the wallet holds considerably greater value to a corrupt politician who naturally wants it back. Badly. Helping the youngsters achieve what they suspect is political justice are Martin Sheen as an American priest and his assistant (Rooney Mara), with a nifty cameo by CNN’s famous international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour. INHERENT VICE (15) In a role utterly unlike Theodore in last year’s HER, Joaquin Phoenix plays stoner private dick, Doc Sportello, tracking down ex-girlfriend Shasta Fay (a luminous Katherine Waterston) and the property magnate she’s been screwing (Eric Roberts) in late ‘60s California. Based on Thomas Pynchon’s picaresque novel it coalesces a hippie-hating cop (Josh Brolin), a spaced-out snitch (Owen Wilson), Sportello’s uptight DA lover (Reese Witherspoon), a philosophising marine lawyer (Benicio Del Toro) and laugh-out loud Martin Short as a sex-addicted coke-head: it all inevitably becoming borderline baffling. But it’s director Paul Thomas Anderson’s funniest work yet and just as compelling as his last, THE MASTER – also starring Phoenix. THE WATER DIVINER (15) The WW1-based drama is also co-star Russell Crowe’s directorial debut and a fine piece of work it is. Crowe plays Australian farmer Joshua Connor, whose four sons are missing, presumed dead in the monumental Battle of Gallipoli. Connor travels to Turkey to bring their bodies back home where we’ve seen him searching for water on his arid farmland, the metaphor for his sorry quest. In Constantinople he falls for his beautiful hotelier (Olga Kurylenko) and receives unexpected help from Turkish army officer (Yimaz Ergodan) who despite having been on the opposing side, has sympathy for “The only father who came looking” for his sons. EFORE Mr Pernickety launches into this month’s tale of disappointment and unfulfilled promise, he would like to draw the attention of his readers to the possibly exciting news that the once Michelin-starred La Bécasse in Ludlow’s Corve Street is to reopen. After the place had been traded – it has to be assumed unsuccessfully – by receivers on behalf of the creditors of the company which had previously owned the restaurant, the former proprietor, Alan Murchison, who also cooked at its sister restaurant, L’Ortolan in Berkshire, has now reacquired the lease and is moving to Ludlow to be head chef and to operate La Bécasse himself. Perhaps he will benefit from the recent announcement that Ludlow has been named one of the ‘50 Best Places to Live in Britain’ by the Sunday Times and the resulting influx to the town of pensioners seeking Nirvana and fine cuisine. Back to the realities of the present, and the irritating way in which some new restaurants launch themselves on a skilfully managed rising tide of hype, which attracts large numbers of well-disposed punters to come and sample their fare. At last year’s Ludlow Food Notveryfestival Mr Pernickety saw the Executive-Head-Chef of Momo No Ki, Christopher Burt, demonstrating his new style of far eastern cuisine while talking convincingly about it and the ingredients involved. Mr P noted Mr Burt’s trade-mark butcher’s-boy hat and the heavy tattoos on his forearms (over which he speculated whether or not Mr Burt could peel them off and put them in a drawer before going home to visit his mum). Although Mr P is wary of trade marks and any other indicators of ‘brand’, to the point of paranoia, Mr Burt’s chat suggested he knew what he was talking about; his new ramen noodle bar sounded fresh, original and exciting, especially for out here in the sticks, and Mr P made a note to visit the restaurant next time he was going that way. One of the Pernickety issue had given their father and his Lovely Companion tickets to see Paul Foot (the standup comedian, not the late investigative journalist) who was appearing at Theatre Severn in what the locals call Shoes-Bree. They took the opportunity to have an early supper before Mr Foot started strutting his stuff (and strut he did!). Even at half-past six, Momo No Ki was filling up. The place is wedged in a complex of interconnecting, co-owned eating and sluicing venues – C21 Bar/Night Club, The Peach Tree (a well thought of restaurant in its own right) and Havana Republic – and punters are free to roam from one to the other. Mr P and the LC were seated near the front, which overlooks Abbey Foregate. They couldn’t see how far in the restaurant extended before morphing into one of the other elements of Mr Burt’s eclectic domain. Generally, the decorative effect was that of Habitat meets somewhere in the Far East, with small, semi-stylish uncomfortable chairs, grumpy-looking staff wearing headsets, all busy in a clackety-clack sort of way. The menu looked fun but tricksy, with an exhaustive key to contents, while offering a choice of noodle type, choice of sauce, topping and ‘protein’ (like bellypork, chicken or tofu). Mr P, not wanting to be late for the stand-up gig

thought it would take too long to work through these unfamiliar elements, so he and the LC decided (mistakenly, as it turned out) that they would get a better overview of the kitchen’s capabilities if they opted for the ‘Platter of the Day’, containing, the menu claimed, ‘sweet’n’sour ham hock, firecracker steamed rice, togarashi tempura monkey tunk pork ribs, sushi of the day and shrimp cracker nachos’. A large tray of stuff arrived and took up most of the small table at which Mr P and the LC were perched. They were given chopsticks, dishes and finger bowls (Mr P could have used a broad headed power shower to deal with the mess he got himself into dealing with the Platter). The three sushi’s each were delicate and delicious – a good start, he and the LC agreed. But it went downhill from there. With his chopsticks Mr P clumsily extracted lumps of ‘protein’, whose identity on the menu he had forgotten, from a pond of sickly sweet brown goo. He guessed it was chicken – it might have been anything. Only when he looked at the menu afterwards was he reminded that it was ham hock. The same sauce, with the addition of a binding agent which looked like sawdust, also coated the chunky spare ribs. This made them extra chewy and contained an additional strange and not in any way enhancing flavour, which Mr P failed to identify, unfamiliar as he is with togarashi tempura monkey tunk. He and the LC didn’t finish their allotted portions. The presumably once crisp shrimp crackers were served in a salad which had rendered them soggy and not at all enjoyable, while the indecipherable goo in which the protein languished was beginning to cloy. It being the season of abstinence Mr P and his LC weren’t drinking alcohol, but they felt that no wine would have had the muscle to mitigate the experience of eating at Momo No Ki, which was one of major disappointment after the artful media campaign and presentation of the place and its concept. They were charged £28 for the platter, £3.50 for Extras – in their case, a jug of tap water; Fizzy water came at £4.95 a litre, and apple juice at £3.80 a pint. The menu says nothing about a service charge. Mr P left a tip with a woman at the till, who called him, ‘My Love’, which is, he feels only just a little better than being called ‘Mate.’ www.misterpernickety.com

EOPLE who watch “Country File” on TV may have seen a recent episode following the story of a newly qualified farm vet called Oliver, who couldn’t afford to buy a local house on the open market. For people working with animals and on the land, living close by is essential. You can’t buy a cheap house in a town many miles out of the area and then ‘commute’ to an emergency calving at 2.30 in the morning. A farm vet will be on 24-hour call regularly and in an emergency, has to be within easy reach of local farms. So the much talked about affordable-housingshortage is a growing problem for people who are young, possibly paying back university fees and working in rural communities. In this case, Oliver found an affordable house in the area through the Addington Fund – a small social trust that provides a small number of houses for people working in and for agriculture. It was originally set up by church groups in the wake of the Foot and Mouth epidemic. ____ In Herefordshire, Canon Frome Court is both housing association and farming coop. The farm itself seems much as a well-organised mixed farm would have been back in the 50s and 60s, with a mixture of dairy, sheep, chickens, orchards, goats, ducks, arable crops and walled garden. The tractors are quite small and old fashioned, but on the other hand a large array of solar panels and a substantial woodchip boiler/green heating system brings the community bang up to date. In all there are 19 self-contained living units ranging from 4-bed family homes to small, single apartments. These homes are not too expensive, but again they’re not available on the open market. You have to apply and attend workdays before being invited to buy a home here. And Canon Frome is more for the diggers than the dreamers … most people of working age have a full time job and/or a young family to look after, but even so everyone helps regularly on the farm and also attends meetings and a weekly shared meal. It’s a system that works beautifully for the right people. ____ Home Presteigne is a cooperative organisation for housing. It provides a framework for people to plan, build and refurbish homes at a local level with a focus on making homes more energy efficient and affordable to live in for people on low/local incomes. It was registered as a Community Benefit Society (coop) in 2013. To build affordable houses you either need funding, or a resourceful Plan B. In the absence of funding, Home Presteigne have come up with Plan B. It began with a proposal from a member of Home Presteigne who originally joined the coop as a representative of the town council. In 2014, Nicola Humphries offered Home Presteigne a piece of land in exchange for refurbishment work on her house.

with 300mm depth of Eco Loft insulation, provision of an insulate cover for the top of the loft stairs, improving the kitchen and installing a more efficient heating system including new radiators that are especially popular with the cat. Much of the work was carried out by volunteer labour with paid assistance from Presteigne based tradesmen. More technical work was carried out by a local plumber, and electricians who all live and work in the town. In exchange for the improvements made to Ivy House, the far end of the garden will be donated to Home Presteigne to provide a building plot for two houses. The next stage will be to prepare a planning application. If successful, Home Presteigne will make two 2-bed houses to be sold or let at affordable rates to local people. Again, local tradesmen and building materials will be used wherever possible and the homes will be built with maximum insulation for very cheap heating bills and minimal energy waste.
