SIDNEY MYER ASIA CENTRE As the name implies, the Sidney Myer Asia Centre houses the Asia Institute as well as other Asian Studies-related institutions. It houses classrooms as well as the Carrillo Gantner Theatre. Nation Fender Katsalidis created it. It is intended to meet the demands of both a university's teaching and exhibition space, as well as the executive offices of an education/business company, Asialink. The building will be placed on the University's main entry axis and will constitute the southern edge of a masterplanned principal entry plaza. The general color scheme of the building is bright, with the exception of the Spirit Wall in the corners, which serves as a buffer between the Potter and the Alice Hoy Building on Monash Road. • The splendid water feature at the entrance of the SMAC designed by FIona da Preu. •The Spitit Wall in the north-eastern corner was designed by Akio Makigawa
SIDNEY MYER ASIA CENTRE SITE SELECTION MATERIAL TRANSITIONS There are three ground materials stitched together around the corner (towards to the entrance of Unimelb along Monash Road). Note: more information relate to materials refers to page 8.
Before COVID-19, this corner was a very busy junction because it is directly connected to one of the entrances to University of Melbourne Parkvill Campus. Pedestrians needs to pass through this corner towards to different places and stay here for a while waiting for traffic lights. Images by Tianyi Liu

These places are waiting areas, and carrying a large number of pedestrians almost every day espcially during teaching period, open days and other specific periods.
Trees are planted on both sides of Swanston Street to provide shade in hot days. However, there is no natural or artificial canopy for shading and rainwater collection in this corner. Considering the large pedestrian traffic over there, a canopy should be set up over here.

SITE ANALYSIS THE SPIRIT WALL Artist: Akio Makigawa Location: Melbourne, Australia Design and Construction Period: 1999 - 2001 Structure: Corten Steel Structure Photos from Tianyi Liu Monash Road
Spirit Wall is installed on the facade of the Sidney Myer Asia Centre and surrounded by Swanston Street and Monash Roads. This monumental sculpture adds to the artistic fabric of the neighborhood and serves as an important landmark at the entrance to the Parkvill campus. During the nonepodemic period, the junction carries a large number of pedestrians every day. Spirit Wall was Akio Makigawa's last work during his lifetime and is defined as the sum of his sculptural career. The work coalesces the symbols often used by the artist. The pods and buds represent birth and growth, while water symbolizes life. The five simplified houses refer to the five continents of the world, while the ring is a symbol of the Eastern Paradise.

PRECEDENT 01 FRAME SCULPTURE This large steel sculpture located at a large garden near Wetherby, and it was designed by Chris to act as the focal point in a very large open garden. The garden has fantastic open views across the North Yorkshire countryside and the Frame is designed to emphasise these views, creating a picture of the ever changing view from the main house. The gently raised landform crescent was formed to encompass the frame and semi-mature trees were planted within the garden.

Location: Beijing, China Client: M WOODS Design Firm: Vector Architects Principal Architect: Gong Dong Site Architect: Dongping Sun Design Team: Dongping Sun, Yinxi Lu Structural Consultant: Lixin Ji Design Period: 01/2016 - 02/2016 Construction Period: 02/2016 - 03/2016 Structure: Steel Structure Photos credit: Xia Zhi
How we see the evolution of the city
Keep the original architectural appearance
The overlapping of new and old
All steps (design+construction) must be completed within 40 days
Limited Counterfeiting
A More Lively Condition Material Palette The design team chose "galvanized iron wire mesh" as the material of choice due to the critical condition. For one thing, it has the translucecy we were looking for and it has a "light" status. Secondly, it is a "self-supporting" tensile material, se the use of this material allows design team to eliminate the need for longitudinal keel construction, while the necessary transverse keel can be easily fixed to the original structure, thus reducing the cost and time of construction. In addition, the translucent quality of the metal mesh makes a hue difference to the north facade of the original building entrance. During the daytime it guides the sunlight and enlivens the north facade, which was originally covered in shadow.
M WOODS Entrance: The overlapping of new and old
A public space for passerby to rest and children to play
The starting point of the design is 'how we see the evolution of the city'. Over the past 20 years, China's urbanization has undergone a rapid process of development in which a large number of old houses, streets, neighborhoods, and even topography have been mercilessly erased and replaced with a "new look" of new planning and design. Today, more and more people are aware of the problems that this approach brings, as the spaces around us become more and more alien and uniform, and our emotions become more and more detached from the habitat we live in. The factory we are dealing with this time is not a heritage or heritage-protected building, but we believe that every era of architecture, even the most ordinary construction, is a very valuable part of the city, bearing the traces of time. Therefore, our strategy is not to change the original building, but to use a new layer of translucent material on top of it to create a superposition of the old and the new. This is to use the translucency of the new material to create a new state of the city together with the old building, rather than to create a new existence by demolishing and renovating the old building. While experiencing the new, people can still feel the old behind it and read the historical information derived from the city step by step.

DESIGN CONCEPT The design concept is to deepen the sense of pedestrians passing by and looking at the site from all around through strong contrasts and to provoke deep thoughts about time and life, which echoing Makigawa's beliefs conveyed through the Spirit Wall.

1.Concept Modelling in Rhino 2. Randering the Design 3. Physical Model in 1:20 However, Solutions that do not take into account the details of the construction usually result in a series of situations that do not meet expectations.
I modeling , randered the design projects and even finished the physical model as soon as I determined my final design expectations. However, the process is direectly from the design concept to the fianl outcome without any thinking and test that whether the design expectations can really be implemented into the site. Then I was try to research some construction methods relevent to my design concept, but I do not quite understand because of the lack of relevant experience and professional knowledge. Therefore, I carried out a series of material test, and the test result also proves that the presentation of design concept and final outcome needs to be coordinated and perfected step by step through detailed design.
MATERIAL BOARD
Mirror Polished Stainless Steel In order to continue the characteristics of big contrast of the ground material, the use of mirror-polished stainless steel to compare with the existing weathering steel can form a strong visual effect and make the "new" and "old" coexist in a unified space.
Rusted Corten Steel Weathering steel is widely used in outdoor sculptures, furniture, etc. because of its resistance to rust and its distressed appearance, especially works that want to convey the concept of time. The weathering steel bench designed here is to act as a sort of elements extension of The Spirit Wall. Image from Google Images
Recycled Timber Timber is widely used in street furniture because of its high comfort and strong naturalness. Benches made of wood have obvious advantages over steel seats in the sun, and are more comfortable
MATERIAL TEST - TOUR STAINLESS STEEL WORKSHOP
FURNITURE FACTORY
The studio is filled with a large number of stainless steel with different treatments
There are many ways to connect wood to each other, such as: nailing, mortise and tenon construction, special glue for wood products, etc. One of the strongest ways is mortise and tenon construction
Stainless steel that has been welded (spot welded) but not subsequently treated

MATERIAL TEST - SKELETON
Physical Model Scale: 1:10
I chose to use wood instead of stainless steel pipe here because of the difficulty of using real stainless steel pipe to make the skeleton.
The structure without Skeleton is very easy to bend even if it is squeezed by hand
Tester Height: 1.67m Tester Weight: 52kg The structure with keel can easily bear the weight of an adult of 52kg or more.
