In today’s world, the lines between craft and art are not so much about materials, but approach and intent. Curator gives details on curating process

“I think of curating as a kind of story telling, whether it’s about a particular medium, a historical period, an idea, an artist, etc. I try to be objective, but being human, my perspective inevitably leaks in, not only through the objects I choose and what I say about them, but what I exclude. Every object has a thousand stories to tell, from the social conditions of the period from which it originated to the nature of the materials used, but my task is to narrow down those various and sundry anecdotes and facts into one cohesive theme.

Curating is as much about what you don’t show as much as what you do include.

When I’m putting a show together using the permanent collection, I typically start with an observation. Though I use databases to compile convenient object lists, I insist on going through collections by hand, because that’s when I typically notice intriguing details that pique my curiosity. If I find something that catches my attention, I’ll write it down for future reference. As I get more familiar with a collection, I’ll revisit these notations to see whether there are any relationships or themes I can explore. I’ve always liked exploring unexpected connections, so often times the pieces I choose for a show may be quite disparate aesthetically. Typically I choose about twice as many works as I’ll end up using for a show; I’ll whittle it down as the theme gets tightened. The research is great fun, though I usually only use about 10 percent of the information I find for the actual labels and exhibit text. Laying out the actual show usually involves several preparatory drawings (often done on either photocopies of the actual gallery floorplan, or, when I need to be more specific, on Microsoft Publisher), but even during installation itself things are subject to change; works in person look very differently than they do on scale drawings. Label writing is, in my experience, one of the most challenging writing endeavors, as you only have a very limited space in which to convey compelling information. Rather than tell five stories hurriedly, I always aim to tell one story well for an object. With every show I tell myself that I can’t say everything; limiting my scope gives me coherency, and leaves the opportunity for future curators (or me) to approach the same works from a different perspective.

In terms of contemporary art, I’ll admit that this is a relatively new field for me, so my process is very much evolving. So far what I’ve been doing is get-

ting acquainted with the art scene itself in order to see what’s going on, rather than developing a show idea first and then seeking out artists who fit it. When I find a particular artist or set of artists that intrigues me, either for their process or their ideas, I look for related works. I certainly have particular genres or ideas that interest me, but in this case I feel I have to know what’s out there first before I can start developing themes.

In terms of upcoming shows, most of them are still in an inchoate state, but I’ll list a couple here: 1. “Subject to Change” – this show will look at the permanent collection through the lens of flux; the various members of the senior staff will propose suggestions for pieces, which I’ll synthesize into the final selection. The show will be divided into three sections, though there will be overlapping. The first part will look at instances of general or “universal” change such as the change of seasons, times of day, etc., to underscore the omnipresence of flux in our lives. The second section will consider examples of historical change such as shifting tastes in fashion or important historical moments, or even technological developments. The final section will consider art itself as flux, whether it’s through tracking an individual artist’s stylistic evolution, or confronting the effects of age on a work of art, such as discoloration, craquelure, and so forth. This exhibit is currently scheduled to open in late October 2013.

2. “Giving” (I haven’t come up with a decent title for this one yet). I’ll be looking at prints that were given as gifts to artists, friends, and so forth. I came up with this idea when I was looking at one of our Rockwell Kents in storage, and noticed a hand-written inscription on it addressed to Howard Cook, another artist in our collection. I started wondering how many other prints had similar gift inscriptions on them, and started writing them down. I thought it’d be an effective way to both human-

ize the artists in our collection and to underscore their connectivity with the larger art world. This show won’t be happening until 2014.

3. “One Time Only” – this selection will be looking at monotypes from our collection, as it was a quick way to get a variety of pieces up on the walls. This will be hung in Horgan Gallery in late October/November 2013.

Those are some ideas I’m working on in the short term. Looking to the future in terms of our permanent collection, I’d like to consider the Ashcan School, Henriette Wyeth, Howard Cook, the Index of Spanish Colonial Design in New Mexico, and other major Continued on next page

The rest of the staff and I also want to reinterpret the Goddard collection, placing more emphasis on his team, and particularly Esther Goddard. As for the Aston, I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around that animal yet, but I do want to underscore the relationship between those objects and their donor, Rogers Aston.

In terms of bringing in loaned materials, I’m interesting in working with artists who use new media such as video and sound (not unlike Ven Voisey), along with traditional media. I like challenging visitors with the unexpected, and encourage them to find new connections between unlike materials or things, or to at least consider them.”

Bingham notable passes Vera Lasiter Jones September 4, 2013

By Gwen Jones Poe Vera Jones of Bingham, N.M., and her husband, Sam Jones, owned and operated the Blanchard Rock Shop for some 30 years. The Hansonberg Mining area in the Oscura Mountains provided opportunities for rock hounds, students, professionals, movie makers and sportsmen. Many students from New Mexico Tech in Socorro explored and studied minerals coming from the mines located just five miles south of the shop located on Highway 380. Rock hounds from across the country visited and collected specimens from the multiple claims and lasting friendships were made. Sam Jones was a skilled heavy equipment operator and helped oversee the area for the Mining Company in operation and other claim holders. He maintained roads and safety features.

The mining area dates to civil war time when lead was the major product but more than 50 minerals are identified in the area. Collectors are crazy about galena, fluorite, barite, quartz and more.

Historically, Bingham was once a thriving community with a school, post office, and store in the bean farming and ranching belt. Vera Lasiter with her family moved from Arkansas to New Mexico. They were dry-land bean farmers in the Gran Quivera area. Sam Jones and Vera met and married in 1937.

Following military service in WWII they settled in Socorro with their three children. Sam was a heavy equipment operator and Vera worked as a nurse.

Through the years of trucking ore from the Blanchard Mine to the San Antonio mill, Sam and Mrs. Ora Blanchard became friends. She lived in a small house near the mine and had a small building on the 5 acre parcel she had acquired on Hwy 380.

Sam had a terrific kinesthetic awareness and could level fields, grade or improve hillside roads with great skill. He was also a “water witch” and located water for Mrs. Blanchard on the five-acre parcel. To date, it is the only “good” water in the area. With water, the shop began to develop.

Mrs. Blanchard gave Sam the first right of refusal when she passed and Sam became a part-time resident.

Changes began to occur. Vera and Sam moved to Bingham and lived in the small shop building, added plumbing, fences, camping spaces, road equipment, orchards, gardens and animals.

Then came a nice mobile home and they converted the small building into a full-fledged rock shop and tourist attraction. They were both avid adventurers and collected snakes for display. They had a large round pit to house the snakes and ranchers were always eager to have Sam visit and pick up snakes. His nickname was “Rattlesnake Jones.”

He was featured in a National Geographic magazine article and also in a film, “Animals nobody loves.”

Vera was always his right hand helper. They were kind to traveling strangers, generous with needed help and with their time. Bingham was like an oasis for family and friends. Everyone saw the “welcome mat” and Bingham was a destination. Sleeping outdoors, collecting minerals, caring for the land, playing with the chickens or bobcats, playing cards or dominoes was always tops on somebody’s list. Vera Jones was 92 when she passed in January and her spirit lingers.

She will always be remembered.

The heart of the Bingham Rock Shop continues with Allison Cameron as the ‘new’ owner. Cameron came as a caretaker to Vera when Sam passed away in 1995 and shortly thereafter bought the property. Cameron says one never knows who will show up to do some rock hounding. She has had the President of Congo, the drummer from Pearl Jam and the drummer from Texas Playboys.

She thinks she also had Ted Turner and Jane Fonda, but the couple left in a huff when Cameron said they looked like Ted Turner and Jane Fonda. Bicyclists, joggers, horseback riders and walkers also show up along the long stretch of Highway 380 and take a breather at the Rock Shop. Cameron feels at home “three miles from the middle of nowhere” and is never lonely. There are visitors every day and Cameron loves to entertain. Her new San Diego transplant husband felt that one reason Cameron wants him around is to take down the hundreds of miles of Christmas lights she puts up each year. As always, if the gates are open, stop by for a visit, a story and an unforgettable experience.

Lincoln National Forest’s Michael Salmon – recipient of the 2013 Gifford Pinchot Excellence in Conservation award CARLSBAD — The 2013 Gifford Pinchot Excellence in Conservation Education Award for the Southwestern Region was presented to Lincoln National Forest’s Fire Prevention Officer Michael “Fish” Salmon.

Salmon is stationed on the Guadalupe Ranger District and was one of the Southwest Region’s high-achieving contenders for this year’s prestigious award.

The nomination cites, “Michael has organized the annual National Environmental Education Week event in Carlsbad for the past 16 years. This event has enhanced the environmental awareness of thousands of 5th graders and increased their love and respect for the outdoors.”

Each year, he has had to face unique challenges and sometimes overwhelming obstacles, but through extra effort, perseverance, and the rewards of strong relationships with local partners, Salmon has led the community of Carlsbad through 16 consecutive annual events, known as “National Environmental Education Week.”

The resounding success of this ‘hands-on’ learning experience in a natural environment, has positively affected more than 16,000 fifth-graders.

Salmon also teaches environmental education to the community’s older children and adults of all ages, by sharing fire curricula with teachers, sponsoring Project Learning Tree workshops and teaching a fire lab

which targets 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Upon receiving the award, Salmon – also known to many as ‘Fish’ – said, “It’s all about the kids… at the end of the day, they’ve got a smile on their faces from ear to ear – as they’re leaving, they keep looking back at me saying, ‘Thank you Mr. Fish, thank you Smokey!’”

Some of the partners Salmon works closely with include: Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Geological Survey, Soil and Water Conservation District, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Navajo Refining Company, NM Wildlife Rescue, Rainbow Recycle, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Zoo-to-You, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research, Carlsbad Wastewater Treatment Plant, Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Cave & Karst Research Institute, the Living Desert State Park and many others.

“On behalf of the Lincoln National Forest, and the Southwestern Region, we are very proud of Michael’s achievement,” said Travis Moseley, forest supervisor on the Lincoln National Forest.

Jim Gumm, Guadalupe district ranger, echoed the expression, adding “Michael has worked tirelessly to make the National Environmental Education Week conference a reality, and 16 years of successful events is truly a demonstration of commitment to our youth and our community of Carlsbad.”

Paul’s presentation, “What’s Buggin’ Your Trees?” will consist of a slide show, photos and an array of physical samples of trees, bark, needles, leaves and the insects and disease symptoms that result from infestation.
