Tres Amigas to provide update on Clovis Project at 2013 Pure Energy Expo The 2013 Pure Energy Expo will feature representatives from Tres Amigas, LLC, to provide updated information about the company’s “superstation” that will unite the nation’s three power grids and will be built in Curry County.

David Stidham, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Tres Amigas, will talk about the latest news on the company’s progress toward helping “the country achieve its renewable energy goals and facilitate the smooth, reliable and efficient transfer of green power from region to region,” according to its website.

The 2013 Pure Energy Expo will take place Oct. 15-16, in Clovis at the Clovis Civic Center, 801 Schepps Blvd.

“I will discuss the progress of our planned construction for Phase I - the connection between the Eastern and Western grids, as well as present design concepts for our Phase II that will connect the Eastern and Texas grids,” Stidham said. He said construction contracts are being finalized for the project and Phase I is expected to be completed in early spring 2016 while Phase II is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

By Janie Smith The glory days of the American cowboy spanned a twenty year period from 1866 to 1886. These were the days of open range and huge cattle drives from ranches in the Southwest to railroads to the north for markets back East where beef was at a premium.

The open range came to an end in the late 1880s with the introduction of barbed wire and federal laws that restricted grazing. The huge cattle drives ceased and the American cowboy went from being a mounted horseman driving cattle to a working cowboy who, among other chores, was building fence lines, doctoring sick cattle, roping and branding calves. It was from these working ranch skills that ranch rodeo developed, and ranch rodeo still brings out real working cowboys to compete.

Unlike professional rodeo, a ranch rodeo focuses only on the skills a working cowboy uses every day on the ranch. These events reflect everyday practices on a ranch such as cattle penning, roping and branding cattle. On Labor Day this year there was a ranch rodeo held in Carrizozo. The arena there is not fancy and the bleachers were hauled in with a truck. The arena was dusty and even the local fire department’s application of water would not last long. An hour before the ranch rodeo was scheduled to start the pickup trucks and horse trailers started to pull in. ranch horses. There was nothing fancy about these outfits. They came from working cattle ranches where fancy is as fancy does.

There are not many real working cowboys left these days even in good years. Because of the extended drought in the Southwest, many ranches have drastically reduced their herds and downsized their operations. Most ranches in New Mexico only employ one or two employees and hire extra hands in the spring and fall if extra help is needed. The life of a working cowboy, or in some cases, a working cowgirl, entails long hours. hard physical work and low wages. You might say that the occupation of a working cowboy is a labor of love. This was emphasized at the ranch rodeo where the cowboys ranged from a man with a college degree to a young woman who grew up on a ranch to a young teenager whose career dream was to be a working cowboy.

The Bullock Cattle Co. is a ranch north of Roswell. Owned by 43-yearold Mikel Bullock; this ranch runs about 350 cattle and has one employee, a 22-year-old woman, Lacey Davis. Davis was raised on the Camaleche Ranch which is 55 miles northeast of El Paso. At the age of three she was on horseback and has been riding ever since. Since Bullock stated that

all of the ranch work was done on horseback, this means long hours in the saddle for both Bullock and Davis on most days. Both are up at 5 a.m., every day, and the day ends at sundown. When Davis was asked why she wanted to be a cowgirl she replied, “I cannot imagine doing anything different. I love working with horses and cattle”. Asked the same question Bullock responded, “It’s something that’s in your blood and you love to do.” For both of these people the cowboy life is clearly a labor of love.

The same sentiment was expressed by Richard Dunlap , who has a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from New Mexico State University. While Richard is not a cowboy on a ranch, he was raised on one and has always been drawn to the working cowboy life. His job at the Corona Range and Research Center run by New Mexico State University entails overseeing research projects and taking care of the cattle and sheep.

He said that he attends ranch rodeos because they are authentic. When asked why he wanted to be a cowboy he said that is all he ever wanted to do. Dunlap did get a college degree, but he is using that degree to follow his childhood dream of following the cowboy life. He has a wife, Amanda, and three young sons. These sons will no doubt one day follow in their father’s footsteps.

ing in his father’s footsteps is Danny Roper, who is 14 years old. He was at the ranch rodeo with his grandfather, David Roper. This is an old New Mexico ranching family having ranched since 1915. To this family, ranching is a way of life and they consider themselves stewards of the land.

Danny has helped on the ranch since he was a very young child. This day he was competing in the ranch rodeo as a working cowboy. While Danny is young he is no stranger to hard work and knows what is in store for him as a working cowboy. It is clear that ranching is what he wants to do for the rest of his life.

Thirteen cowboys and one cowgirl rode into the arena at the start of the ranch rodeo. They formed a semi circle as the officials drew lots to pair up teams which would compete for the high score. There in that dusty area were images of the old west.

They represent the simple values that have been largely lost in America today: hard physical labor without thought of great monetary gain, an independent spirit, love of the land and the open spaces and a respect for themselves and their fellow men and women. Sitting there on their honest working ranch horses were the real working cowboys and cowgirls in America, proof that it is possible in today’s world to follow a dream and make it a reality.

Government shutdown forces closure of Guadalupe Mountains National Park SALT FLAT, Texas – Because of the shutdown of the federal government caused by the lapse in appropriations, the National Park Service (NPS) has closed all 401 national parks, including Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

All visitor facilities including the Pine Springs Visitor Center, campgrounds and roads – except for U.S. Highway 62/180, a thru way – are closed. The park will remain closed until the government reopens.

Park Superintendent Dennis A. Vásquez said that park visitors in all overnight campgrounds were given until 6 p.m. on Oct. 3 to make travel arrangements and leave the park. In addition, all park programs and special events have been canceled, including: participation in the Dell Valley Fair and Hudspeth County Chili Fest in neighboring Dell City, and, potentially, Fall Colors, which normally takes place from mid-October through mid-November. Repairs to park trails and roads from the recent flash floods has also been discontinued during the shutdown.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park hosts 595 visitors on average each day in October; nationally, more than 715,000 visitors a day frequent the National Park System. The park will lose an estimated $161 of entrance fees each day of the shutdown and an estimated $116 in other fees. Nationwide the NPS stands to lose approximately $450,000 per day in lost revenue from fees collected at entry stations and fees paid for in-park activities such as cave tours, boat rides and camping. Gateway communities across the country see about $76 million per day in total sales from visitor spending that is lost during a government shutdown. Visitors spend about $10,919,000 a year in the communities around Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

In Guadalupe Mountains National Park, 29 employees are on furlough because of the shutdown and another two Student Conservation Association interns are similarly affected. Six employees remain on duty, providing security and emergency services.

Nationwide the shutdown has also furloughed more than 20,000 National Park Service employees; approximately 3,000 employees remain on duty to ensure essential health, safety, and security functions at parks and facilities. About 12,000 park concessions employees are also affected.

Because it will not be maintained, the National Park Service website will be down for the duration of the shutdown. NPS.gov has more than 750,000 pages and 91 million unique visitors each year.

LCHS schedules Tour of La Luz Pottery Factory

By Mary M Serna Restoration Director St. Joseph Apache Mission The Lincoln County Historical Society has scheduled a tour of the historic La Luz Pottery Factory for Oct. 19. The factory grounds are located in La Luz on Fresnel Canyon Road. La Luz is between Alamogordo and Tularosa along U.S. 54. Pete Eidenbach, professor of Anthropology and New Mexico History, New Mexico State University, Alamogordo, will be conducting the tour. The tour will take place, rain or shine.

Lincoln County residents who may wish to car pool to the grounds will meet at 8:15 a.m. at Carrizozo History Museum, 103 12th Street, in Carrizozo or may meet at 10 a.m. at La Luz Pottery Factory in La Luz. The tour will begin at 10 a.m.

The La Luz Pottery Factory, one of the most important historic sites in Otero County, was built in 1930 by Rowland Hazard III from Newport, R.I.. The factory is listed on the New Mexico Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register in 1979 and was donated to the Tularosa Basin Historical Society for long-term preservation and interpretation. The La Luz Pottery property contains 235 acres with water rights and the extensive clay pits. In 1967, it had eight structures in various structural conditions, ranging from two occupyable residential houses to ruins of industrial facilities. The most prominent structure is, undoubtedly, the firing kiln with its tall brick chimney which still contains 4000 roofing tiles from the last firing, probably in 1949.

These Spanish-style red barrel Mission tiles were used throughout the region on residences in La Luz, Tularosa and Alamogordo and are a wellknown feature of St. Joseph’s Mission church in Mescalero, designed and built by Fr. Albert Braun. Architect John Gaw Meem often specified these La Luz roof tiles in his designs, which included Albuquerque’s Little Theater, the first structure built by the WPA in Albuquerque. La Luz Pottery also

printed an elaborate catalog which illustrated all the available ceramic products, had a showroom on 52nd Street in New York City, and sold ceramics in at least 44 states throughout the nation and in four foreign countries.

Fall Open Art Show The Llano Estacado Art Association presents the 2013 Fall Open Art Show, which opened yesterday at the Center for the Arts, 122 W. Broadway in Hobbs. The show is free and open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 23.

Categories for awards include (1) oils and acrylics, (2) watercolor, (3) pastels/drawing/pen and ink, (4) sculpture/pottery/turnings, (5) graphics which includes silkscreen, mixed media, collage and photography and (6) three dimensional which includes enameling, glass, metal, jewelry,

plastic, mosaic, wood and fiber. Cash awards will be $150 for Best of Show, $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place in each category. Ribbons will be awarded for honorable mention. A plaque will be presented for the People’s Choice Award voted by those attending the exhibit.

All entries were completed within the previous two years and are original works of art.
