Survivors inspire global movement for breast cancer cure

By Eugene Heathman Just five years ago, little did I know the totality of breast cancer and the inspired drive of survivors and families of those stricken by the disease to find a cure would find its way so close to home.

I recognized the movement as a worthy cause and donated a few bucks here and there, wore pink on designated days to show my support and even did the walk with some people from work. That was about it.

Then one day I get a phone call from my mother stating she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, a double mastectomy would be needed… in five days.

It wasn’t my body but I was mortified, five days from now my mother’s body, her womanhood was going to be cut away and thrown in the trash followed by several months of chemotherapy which I coined as poison treatment.

My mother, who has led a perfectly healthy life with nothing more than the occasional bout with flu, was not only in immediate danger but her entire core being would be changed forever.

Still, I did not quite understand the totality of breast cancer with a global perspective until my mother was wheeled into the operating room.

Although I had cleared my reputation and adolescent misgivings and adult wrongs with her, I still could not stop

the overwhelming wave of guilt, why her? I am the one who lived hard while young, punished my body on the rugby pitch, the ski slopes and the lake. Sometimes, I even punished my body harder at the pub thereafter. It was I who deserved such a fate, not her.

Living 200 miles away didn’t help matters during her grueling treatment and subsequent ‘mini-stroke’ she suffered while home alone. Nothing short of a miracle occurred by her not seriously injuring herself while a concerned family member broke into her home after she lay semi-conscious, unable to answer the door.

Quite frankly, I felt helpless.

Should I relocate? What sort of care could I even provide if I were there?

I had no idea though I put the offer on the table; mom politely declined the need for me to move. Perhaps we would drive each other nuts.

What I did develop from this experience was a fresh perspective on the urgent movement to develop a cure for breast cancer, inspired by survivors and by the friends and families of those who have fallen to this deadly disease. Although I am not a fan of giving money to the administrative machine, it’s the movement on the ground, the resolve to fight at the community and individual level that inspires me to walk with my mother at least once per year as she counts one more year of being a survivor rather than one year closer to death.

ENMU-Roswell student organization sponsors run/walk for cancer fund

A committee of ENMU-Roswell students is hosting a special event in October to raise funds for the Chaves County Cancer Fund. The Outrun Fear Organization is sponsoring a Run/Walk Haunted Trail at Cielo Grande Park at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The event is part of “Paint the Town Pink,” a community wide effort to raise awareness about breast cancer and solicit donations for the Chaves County Cancer Fund (CCCF). CCCF provides financial assistance to local cancer patients, who need help covering expenses, like rent,

car payments and utilities while undergoing treatment.

The cost is $20 per running/walking participant and includes a T-shirt and goodie bag while quantities last.

Additional donation levels are available: Platinum ($500+), Gold ($200), Silver ($100) and Bronze ($50). The Theatre Guild (at NMSU-A) is hosting Celia – well known singer, songwriter, comedienne – for a benefit concert to help offer scholarships to NMSU-A theatre students. The concert will be Saturday evening, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rohovec Theatre. New acting class at ENMU-Ruidoso A new class has been added to ENMU-Ruidoso Community Education. Jennifer Fountain, theater instructor at NMSUAlamogordo, will teach an intensive, oneday acting class on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at White Mountain Annex.

The class covers the basics of acting but at an advanced level. Topics covered include relationships between actors, actor and director, ways to turn rehearsals into joyful events, physical movement and breathing exercises, improvisation skills and script analysis, use of action-based acting styles and oneon-one monologue and scene work coaching.

Fountain graduated from the Professional Actor Training Program at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival with a MFA in performance and worked as assistant director and stage manager for a small theater in New York.

With more than 20 years working as an actor, director and stage manager and a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, Fountain brings insights and practical experience from both an actor’s and director’s point of view. All experience levels are welcome.

Water conservation, the Ruidoso way, every day

By Angie Fernandez I often try to find the blessings in each obstacle I face, as I find every obstacle is a blessing, (frequently too disguised to realize it).

A great example of this would be the Little Bear Fire, which greatly affected my community in various ways. As my heart went out to those who suffered losses, I could only be grateful for the community in which we live. What I saw was an outpouring of love from my community and our neighboring counties, as we worked together to help those in need. Various groups and committees banded together, as new committees were formed. Those who are often too busy for committees, were able provide what they could.

We saw clothes, shelter, food, time and money donated as well as many brilliant thoughts shared. I now see what my community is made up of, unselfish and giving individuals.

I now ask my community to come together once again, this time in an effort to conserve water. The water currently available on our planet is all there is and we must work together to make it last. As the Village of Ruidoso moves into phase 5 water restrictions we experience the necessity to do more to conserve it, other than just following the given guidelines. Water conservation should become a way of life so our

children can learn to protect this natural resource as well.

Here are a few thoughts: Can I use less water pressure each time I wash my hands? Can I use minimal water pressure when brushing my teeth? Can I talk to my local landscaper to find out what can be done to keep my yard beautiful and green? Can I take a shorter shower?

Can I wait for it to be “brown” before I flush it down? Can I examine my clothing to see if they still look, smell and feel presentable before I throw it in the washing machine?

Can I wash my sheets, towels or comforter less often? Could I attend a water harvesting class at ENMURuidoso? Can I invest in a rain water catchment system? Can I Google other water conservation ideas?

As each of us is on a different path and are most definitely entitled to the “pursuit of happiness”, let us remember that we can all make an effort to do what is right for our children, grandchildren and our fellow mankind. We don’t have to do it all, but we can learn to do what we can.

Golden Aspen Hog Battle BBQ Championship There is nothing better than the smell of BBQ cooking on a cool crisp morning; 20 competitive cookers arrived in Ruidoso for the first International BBQ Cookers Association State Championship. The aroma of New Mexico red chile beans filled the air. Cookers prepared their chile beans throughout the night for turn in at 11 a.m. to the judges (headed up by Bobby Olguin, Star of the New Mexico Chefs program on PBS).

Mike Gains, a native New Mexican, and his son Ryan took top honors in the Chefs Choice Categories. Mike took a second in Chile Beans first in Green Chile Cheese Burger while Ryan took first in Chile Relleno. It is not to hard believe that these guys take competitive cooking serious and know how to cook the real deal. Mike was raised in Socorro, just a few miles from the home of the two most famous green chile cheese

burgers in the U.S. – the Owl Bar and the Buckhorn Tavern where Bobby Olguin won the Green Chile Cheese Burger throw-down against Bobby Flay, the Famous Food Network Chef.

Congratulations to Mike and Ryan for making New Mexico proud.

Kevin Zamora from Tularosa took a second in GCCB while Marco Morales from Las Cruces placed in all three categories’ with a second in Chile Relleno. Al Serna, another Las Cruces team gives these native New Mexico teams bragging rights. Yes, a few Texan teams slipped in there for some wins but they may have been from New Mexico originally.

Country artist David Ball has a knack for writing tunes with strong melodies which he sings with contagious ease and affection. His sweet, warm tenor has been likened to that of George Straight’s, and at times sounds like Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buffet and Willie Nelson. Red Feather Theatre Company to open 2012-13 season with

By Desirae Stephenson Have you ever wondered what’s going on within the walls of the Red Feather stage? Have you been curious when their next production is? Do you love Shakespeare? Well then you might want to consider coming to see Red Feather’s next production, Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

The Tempest is a hilarious, dashing and romantic play. The main character is a sorcerer named Prospero and his daughter Miranda. They live on a mysterious island in the middle of the ocean. They’re waited on by unusual beasts and magical spirits. The plot of the play thickens when Prospero puts his evil plan of revenge in motion. Those who humiliated Prospero and banished him and Miranda to the sea to drown are brought to the island by a spell and to where Prospero lives.

The Red Feather Theatre Company is working very hard bringing Shakespeare back to life. Endless hours of rehearsals are spent trying to understand the words and action. Since The Tempest is full of music, our very own Jacob McCaw has been working diligently composing music that will be performed.

Another unique thing about The Tempest is that Red Feather has filmed the first scene of the play, directed by our very own Diego Rojas. You may have seen some of his brilliant work last year when he made trailers for Playwrights Nights. I think Diego is a superb self taught director from being in his short films last year and this.

I know that lots of effort is put into making the film as good as possible and it is funny, tense, gory, sad and very entertaining.

Who all survives Prospero’s wrath? Who falls in love? Who plots their revenge? Who dies? Who lives? Those are all very good questions. The best way to get the answer is by attending the play. The Red Feather Theatre Company hopes to see you next month at The Tempest. The play is showing on Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in Ruidoso Schools Performing Arts Center at 125 Warrior Drive. Advance tickets are being sold locally at Can’t Stop Smokin’, Zocca Coffee,

Golden Yarn and The Ruidoso Chamber of Commerce. Advance tickets are $10 and include and intermission treat by Zocca Coffee. Tickets will be sold at the door for $12.

The 10:30 a.m. show will be attended by students and any of you in the community who would like to come for that performance. Zocca Coffee will not be serving on that show as students and others are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and bottle of water.

The intermission will actually be a short lunch break for the Nov. 1 performance only.

Is photography ‘art’? Musings on what I do...

Good-meaning friends have in the past, presented me with the question: “Is photography art?” Before I became a photographer, I had never thought of photography as not being an art form, considering it just another way to bring beauty into our lives; or a different perspective through the eye of someone whose focus is to do that. And isn’t that what artists do? The fact that we can even ask the question indicates that there is a possibility. Not unlike the questions “Is there a God?” or “Are my lug nuts on tight?”

Of course, there are many types of photography. Some photographs speak, some keep track. Some are interesting and some are boring. Some are humorous and some are just stupid. There are as many different types of photography as there are reasons for painting.

So of what value are paintings and of what value and importance are photographs?

I like to photograph what I see when I suddenly find myself saying…

“Oh my God, that is so beautiful!”

I don’t plan to say that, it just happens. I recognize that, and I stop so that hopefully I am able to capture that moment that gave me the inspiration to say what I was feeling. I find a need to capture the essence of my exclamation.

And sometimes it means I have to turn around. I have to walk into a field and get down on my knees to get just the right shot to share what I see and “feel” in that moment.

Sometimes I catch myself laughing.

What’s so funny about a grocery cart in a meandering arroyo in Albuquerque?

Who knows? Why do I like upsidedown junk cars in an empty field?

Why does a dumpy little trailer in an immense expanse of gorgeous scenery make me stop? And what is that young foal thinking as it looks at my lens?

After miles of a never-ending junk yard in Farmington, I can’t stand it anymore.

I have to stop. Is it beautiful? It’s some-

thing... indescribable. And the photograph has to relay that feeling.

And sometimes it takes a little planning, like after a thunderstorm.

You can see where it is still raining but the sun is shining - like when you were little and used to run through the sprinkler, but “Morning Blues” if you stopped for a secAwakening the recognition of what is ond and got in just the right spot, you there all the time.
