Altrusa home tour raises funds for mammograms The Ruidoso Altrusa club is holding its second annual, Lincoln County home tour Sunday Dec. 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. as part of their annual fundraising campaign to provide low-cost mammograms for Lincoln County and Mescalero residents.

Last year’s tour showcased four homes in Alto and Ranches of Sonterra. This year’s tour of beautiful homes will showcase five homes; four of which are in Alto and one in Outlaw. These festively decorated homes may be toured on one’s own and in any order. Addresses and directions are printed on each ticket.

There will be light refreshments served in the home and a drawing for a beautiful Christmas wreath will be held at the completion of the tour.

Tickets may be purchased from any Altrusan or by calling Helen at 259-

5689. Ticket price for the gorgeous and elaborately decorated homes is $20. Proceeds from this Altrusa fundraiser will help support the many charities in Lincoln County to which Altrusa contributes.

Altrusa is a worldwide nonprofit organization. Altrusa of Ruidoso, NM, chartered in 1970, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of members whose goal is to improve the quality of life in our community.

Altrusa members work to support literacy and help community through service projects and volunteerism.

Some of our projects include Annual Low-Cost Mammograms,The Nest, Lincoln County Food Bank, scholarships for returning students and the Back Pack Food for Kids Program.

A sprinkling of holiday recipes and ideas Moist Oatmeal Cupcakes Pumpkin dunkin delight Ingredients ½ cup unsalted butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup old-fashioned oatmeal, not instant 1 ½ cups boiling water 2 eggs 1 ½ cup all purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup shredded coconut

1 cup raisins ½ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup sliced almonds

Pour the boiling water over the oatmeal and set aside.

Blend sugar and butter thoroughly.

Slowly add eggs and continue to blend. Add oatmeal and then slowly add the rest of the items, waiting until end to add raisins and shredded coconut.

Fill cupcakes liners or muffin tins 3/4 full and bake at 350° F for 25 minutes.

Easy holiday salad recipe Family Features

If time and money are in short supply, use creativity to turn small splurges into celebrations. Consider recipes that won’t break the bank nor leave you exhausted afterwards. This recipe features affordable imports – butter and cheeses from Ireland, where cows are grass-fed and milk from small farms is used to make prized dairy products.

The family holiday dinner: Keep the main course simple with a no-fuss roast. Make a splash with this festive salad featuring creamy and elegant Cashel Blue Irish farmhouse cheese.

Serve on your best china.

Pear, Roast Onion, Hazelnut and Cashel Blue Cheese Salad 1 red onion, peeled Olive oil salt and pepper 3 pears (not too ripe) 2 tablespoons Kerrygold unsalted Irish butter 2 ounces hazelnuts, lightly toasted, halved 5 ounces baby greens (watercress, baby spinach and frisée) 10 ounces Cashel Blue cheese, crumbled Dressing: 2 ½ teaspoons white wine vinegar ¼ teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and pepper

4 tablespoons hazelnut oil 2 tablespoons light olive oil 1 ½ teaspoons superfine sugar (or to taste)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Halve onion and cut it into crescent slices. Put into a small ovenproof dish, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Roast about 20 minutes, or until soft with slightly caramelized tips. Keep warm. Whisk dressing ingredients together. Halve and core pears, then cut lengthwise into slices slightly thicker than ¼ inch. Melt butter in a frying pan and quickly sauté on each side until golden. Don’t overcook – they should still hold their shape. Toss salad greens with nuts, using most of the dressing; divide among six plates. Add pear and onion slices to each plate and scatter with cheese. Drizzle each plate with the rest of the dressing. Serves six.

Recipe by Keli Cox Ingredients 1 29 oz. can pumpkin 1 c. sugar 1 13 oz. can evaporated milk 3 eggs 4 tsp. pumpkin pie spices ½ tsp. salt 1 box yellow cake mix 1 ½ sticks (3/4 c.) butter, melted 1 c. pecans, chopped Combine pumpkin, sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, pumpkin pie spices and salt in mixing bowl. Beat well. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch glass pan.

Sprinkle cake mix over

pumpkin mixture then, sprinkle on the pecans. Pour melted butter over all.

Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Watch closely at end. Burns easily.

Serves 12 to 15.

Santa Claus is preparing for Christmas with some high altitude training in Ruidoso. Santa will be at the Ruidoso downs Walmart every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Christmas.

Walmart is also providing those who wish to tell Santa what they want for Christmas a free 5x7 photo taken with Santa.

to go through the purse to obtain cash and valuables that can be pawned. The purse is often discarded in a dumpster, storm drain, low roof, or over a fence into a yard. The purse, if recovered, will often be found anywhere from a block away to a mile from the scene of occurrence.

The following are suggestions offered to help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of this crime: 1. Carry as little paper currency as possible. Rely on credit cards and/or personal checks for large purchases. Credit cards and personal checks can be replaced, but money can’t.

2. Carry your keys in your hand; they make an excellent weapon to protect yourself. Don’t carry your keys or important medications in your purse. The loss will prevent you from driving, entering your home, reading necessary documents, or taking important medication for your health.

3. Beware, if you are knocked down and you chose to struggle for the purse, the criminal could become more determined and cause you extreme physical harm to accomplish the act.

4. When shopping, never leave your purse unattended. Never leave it on a restaurant seat, in shopping carts, public restroom floors, dressing rooms, or under your seat in theaters. Wrap the child restraint on a shopping cart around the purse handles to make it hard for the thief to grab and go.

5. If your purse is stolen and someone telephones to request you respond and get your purse, don’t. Let the police pick it up. It could be the thief looking to rob you of more valuables.

6. The target areas for pick pockets are back trouser pockets, and suit coat and sports jacket pockets, located both inside and out. A pickpocket generally avoids front trouser pockets, and especially buttoned or zippered pockets.

7. If you have to carry your wallet in an unbuttoned jacket, coat or pants pocket, be sure it holds only what you can afford to lose. Keep money, credit

cards, IDs, in your front pocket or any buttoned or zippered pocket. Some people even place a rubber band around their wallet, because the rubber band creates friction and rubs against the fabric of your pocket if someone is attempting to remove it without your knowledge.

8. Never pat your pocket to see if your wallet is there; this lets a criminal know the exact location of your valuables.

9. When driving in your car, keep your doors locked and keep the purse on the floor behind your seat.

You don’t need someone smashing your window and taking your purse from the front passenger seat.

10. Never keep PIN numbers, account numbers, or any safe combination numbers in your purse, if you do, the thief could benefit from this information.

11. Always assume the purse snatcher or purse thief still has your house and car keys. Change locks immediately. It may save you a bigger loss in the future.

12. A purse snatcher can be anyone – a man, woman, or child. They are not the stereotypes television often portrays.

13. Never leave your purse near your front door. A person knocking on your door could see the purse and force their way inside to get it.

14. Keep the purse flap closed and secure when in a crowded area. It will keep “sticky fingers” out.

15. Purse theft can happen anytime, anyplace. Constant vigilance is needed to deter criminals. Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to who is around you & what activities are happening. Don’t leave the safety of a building or your vehicle until you have ensured all is secure and safe. Trust your instincts; if you feel uncomfortable with a place or person(s), get away.

16. Park in a well-lit areas, don’t wander into risky areas alone or at night.

17. Keep a list, separate from your wallet, of contact numbers to report lost credit cards.

Black Friday kicks off the busy holiday shopping season. It also starts the highest theft time of the year.

Phone theft, pick-pocketing and purse snatching are always more common and significant during the holidays. These crimes can be classified as either a crime against property or a crime against person depending upon the circumstances involved during the commission of the offense. In the case of purse snatching, it can produce long term effects in the victim. The loss alone cannot be measured in just the financial loss of the purse, but there is the distrust in walking unharmed in public and in our own familiar surroundings.

It is time consuming when you consider the notifications to various companies and organizations to replace important documents. Credit cards must be canceled, work identification replaced, drivers licenses duplicated, check books reordered, house keys and locks replaced and old photographs of loved ones may be lost forever. The threat of identity theft makes these losses even more traumatic. Additionally, with all our data and information saved on our phones these have become one of the top targets for theft. Behind the increase in crime: A lucrative market for used phones.

Thieves can sell pilfered devices to local merchants or street-corner middlemen – or hawk them on sites such as eBay.com, Amazon.com or Craigslist.org, where a used iPhone, for instance, can fetch several hundred dollars. So if your phone or tablet is lost or stolen report it immediately.

Purse snatching is a crime that usually focuses on the elderly and citizens with one or more physical difficulties that would hinder their ability to fight back or give chase. The criminal depends on speed and the element of surprise to accomplish the act. Some purse snatchers prefer to attack from behind, knocking the victim to the ground. This is dangerous to the elderly or persons with a health disability.

The thief will not usually keep the purse more than five minutes after the crime. An arrest with the purse in their possession is the kind of evidence the thief does not want. They will need only enough time

AAFES Chief visits Holloman HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE —The senior enlisted advisor for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service visited Nov. 7 and 8.

During his visit, Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Pearson toured Exchange facilities, met with Airmen and community members and addressed Exchange-related issues.

“This is my first time visiting Holloman AFB and I have been excited about this visit from the time I arrived,” said Pearson. “Each group I have interacted with today has been truly wonderful.”

The Exchange is a joint non-appropriated fund instrumentality of the Department of Defense with a retail mission to provide quality products, services and food to servicemembers, their families, Reserve and

Guard members and military retirees.

Exchange sales generate earnings to supplement Air Force Services programs as well as Army Morale Welfare and Recreation activities.

Pearson is one of 72 active duty servicemembers assigned to AAFES, which carries out this mission while employing more than 42,000 civilian associates worldwide.

“For every dollar earned, 67 cents comes back to the military community from the MWR dividend. Last year, Holloman activities got back more than $436,000, so shopping at the Exchange is a win-win,” said Pearson. “You get great products at a great price and your money comes back to the installation through the dividend.”

Thanksgiving – not just a holiday As the Thanksgiving holiday passes by, I can only think about how being thankful plays a major role in our personal health and well-being.

We often see the benefits of consuming healthy foods to contribute to our health, but what we put into our hearts and minds may have equal or even more value to a healthy life. By taking a moment in which to be thankful, our brains can make a shift in a positive direction and we can experience more happiness in our lives. There are numerous studies out there concluding that a positive attitude is beneficial in healing, as positive thoughts can create a boost in our immune system.

While many of us are thankful for the blessings of life, such as waking up every morning or feeling the love of friends and family, there are little things throughout our day that commonly go overlooked.

In order to assist with the process of gratitude, here are a few helpful thoughts that may help us find more things for which to be thankful, therefore enhancing our experiences of happiness for health: • Keep a journal that includes a list of things you are thankful for and add to it each day.

• Find a minimum of five things that make you smile throughout the day (with this mindset, you may find that you do not stop at just five) • Be grateful for gifts such as our five senses (touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight) and pay attention to how these senses help us enjoy life, such as the

• A commonly ignored opportunity to be grateful is when we forget to be thankful for the things we didn’t want. An example of this is when we have an expectation of life, and life takes us in another direction leaving us feeling disappointed that we did not experience what we wanted, only to notice later that life worked out anyway by rerouting us in another direction.

• Realize that the more blessings we count, the less time there is to notice what we think might be wrong.

If we incorporate thoughts of gratitude into our everyday life, we can create a habit that will enhance our experience in life, and as we only get one; let’s not miss the opportunity to observe life’s blessings.
