A wildland firefighter and contract photographer for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, Greer is nationally known for the quality of her images, her ability to capture the life of those behind the lines and the capricious nature of fire itself. Salvation Army’s annual bell ringing campaign will begin Thursday

The familiar sound of bells ringing and red donation buckets will begin for the local Salvation Army Thanksgiving Day to kick off the winter annual fundraising season to help Lincoln County residents in need.

The Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers Friday, Saturday, Sunday in two-hour shifts at Walmart, Walgreens, Lawrence Brothers and downtown. One hundred percent of what is collected stays in Lincoln County. The main goal of the organization goal is to collect enough so our fund never runs dry. This year the group’s funding made it almost to November and they hope to collect more this year so we never have to turn anyone away.

People in need go to Ruidoso Downs First Baptist Church and fill out an application. Once the application is approved, a check is made out to the need. At no time does cash change hands and all requests are followed up on. Local organizer, Darien Ross said, “Many circumstances can befall upon a person to become in need of Salvation Army assistance. I believe that we are seeing more elderly people because their fixed income doesn’t go as far as it used to in addition to losing large amounts of their retirement savings during the recession.

All of the money raised is distributed locally to those in need from the local Salvation Army headquarters,

located at the First Baptist Church on Highway 70, Ruidoso Downs.

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, performing evangelical, social and charitable work and bringing the Christian message to the poor, destitute and hungry by meeting both their physical and spiritual needs.

The organization states that its ministry extends to all, without discrimination.

By Eugene Heathman Editor Steady streams of enthusiastic skiers will ascend Ski Run Road Dec. 7 to the slopes of Ski Apache.

Tourists and locals alike celebrate the much anticipated opening day with base conditions rivaling other ski resorts in the state.

“Our average daily number of 400 skiers per day expected this weekend is about the same as last year, once the season kicks in, we will average between three and four thousand skiers per day,” said Justin Rowland, sixth year director of operations on the mountain.

Ski Apache is one of six ski resorts in New Mexico to open in December, according to Ski New Mexico.

“Consistency is what tourists rely on such as opening day and a high level of guest services.”

Rowland said. “While some resorts are deciding whether or not they will open, people rely on our consistency when making their vacation plans, otherwise tourists may decide to go somewhere else.”

Affordable family fun will dominate opening weekend at Ski Apache. Yvette Avalon of El Paso brought her young children to Ski Apache for their first ski lessons. “I have been skiing here for a long time but I brought my children here to learn how to ski this weekend, the weather is beautiful and everyone is so nice,” Avalon said.

According to Ski New Mexico, the national average cost for a family of four, with three nights and two days lodging and skiing is $3,785 compared to the estimated vacation cost in New Mexico of just $1,158.

Avalon also

said, “El Paso is so close that my family can afford to come up here often.” Driving time to Ruidoso, from most parts of New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma is less than nine hours, which makes it convenient for families who wish to avoid the hassles and expense of air travel.

Ski Apache will return for its 51st year on Sierra Blanca with three new chair lifts for the 2012 season. The new season boasts a brand new Doppelmayr Gondola. Home to the first and only passenger gondola in the state of New Mexico, the new eightpassenger gondola climbs 1,646 feet to the mountain’s peak in just eight minutes, almost twice as fast as its predecessor.

As the new gondola carries nearly 2,000 skiers and snowboarders up the ski resort per hour, two new Doppelmayr chair lifts, one triple and one quad, help Ski Apache achieve the highest lift capacity in the state with another 3,600 guests ascending the mountain per hour.

“We are happy to invest in something that has proven such a valuable asset not just to the tribe but to the surrounding communities as well, particularly considering the effects on the region from the Little Bear Fire,” said Frederick Chino, Sr., president of

Adding to the new amenities at Ski Apache, favorite events including the Torchlight Parade, Music on the Mountain, terrain park competitions, and the Dummy Gelunde Downhill Race return to the mountain, creating a winter wonderland full of fun and entertainment.

New events for the 2013 season include Sisters on Snow, which appeals to women looking to improve slope-side skills from intensive instruction, and the Big Mountain Challenge for two-person teams of intermediate skiers and boarders, with prizes to the top six finishers.

Starting Dec. 7, the mountain is open seven days per week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All lifts and the gondola will be open by Christmas 2012 along with Ski Apache’s two terrain parks featuring five standard and one rainbow box, three flat rails, one battleship rail, one flat-down-flat rail and one A-frame rail.

Lift tickets are $54 for adults, $47 for seniors (60 years and older), $43 for military personnel, $45 for teens (13-17 years) and $34 for children under 13. Group ticket discounts are also available in addition to individual ski and snowboard equipment rentals, $20 for adults and $12 for children.

Lifts run daily including holidays and more than 100 instructors are available for lessons, along with Flaik GPS systems making it possible to locate children and guests on the mountain in real time, while also providing a chance to track the day on the mountain, recording information such as lifts used and runs explored.

Inn of the Mountain Gods delivers food for the hungry

By Eugene Heathman and Sue Alborn Charles Meeks of the Inn of the Mountain Gods and Elk of the Mescalero Tribe delivered four tons of food Friday amongst the St. Josephs Mission in Mescalero, Gateway Church of Christ in Ruidoso and the Lincoln County Food bank in Ruidoso Downs. The Inn generously makes the annual delivery to help hungry residents of Lincoln County and Mescalero each year before Thanksgiving.

The Lincoln County Food Bank is celebrating 26 years in Lincoln County.

In 2012, more than 200 new families have applied to receive food from the bank.

On July 31, 1986, thirteen founders met for the first time to establish a food agency serving Lincoln County residents. These ambitious souls included: Phyllis Boverie, Sister Rose, Rosina Boyd, Sarah Jackson, Father Dave Berg, Antonio Lujan, Verna Adams, Rigo Chavez, Marie Griego, Dr. Eugene Sellers, Esther Sellers, Betsy Seiler and Dorothy Belle Knapp. Available for distribution after this meeting were potatoes from Murphy’s Wholesale Produce and hamburger meat from Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce. Plans were made for the contents of a future food box, logo, brochure, and muchneeded volunteers.

Today, 26 years later, the Lincoln

County Food Bank has been in continual operation and grown to a ninemember board and 60 volunteers. The Food Bank provides food boxes to an average of 210 families monthly, serving more than 600 individuals. Proof of residence in Lincoln County (by a utility bill) plus a photo ID are the sole requirements for a food box. The boxes now contain approximately $50 in nutritionally balanced food items plus fresh produce, milk, eggs, pastries and bread as available.

Completely staffed by volunteers and a volunteer board, no one is paid for their services nor reimbursed for their expenditures. The Food Bank is totally reliant upon donations from the community and all money contributed buys food or pays two bills: telephone and insurance. Thanks to the many generous civic organizations, churches and individuals, the Food Bank has promise of another 26 years in operation.

Please consider a donation to help us provide food for the holidays to those who would not have a Merry Christmas otherwise.

The difference in music

Visualize seeing Big Bugs, Dreamboat Crusaders, and AquaMarinez all coming together in the small town of Carrizozo. Now if you are picturing humongous tarantulas, people sailing on our many open bodies of water with mermaids tagging along, you would be just a bit off in your imagery.

On Nov. 12, three different bands stopping in from California and New Jersey came to play in the small town of Carrizozo while on tour. “We love playing in places like this, this is everything for us. I always play in New York, and it doesn’t feel as good as this feels. It feels so, I don’t know… real.” said Marina Benedetto band member of the AquaMarinez.

“We love to create spaces for everyone to be creative and not feel like you have to fit in to a certain group. No pressure to make money or anything like that, just to have fun.” said Jessie Gold, band member of the Dreamboat Crusaders. “I love to go on mental adventures, and when other people join me.” said Jesse Marie Di Carlo-Wagner, band member of the Big Bugs.

“I am focusing more on the visual side of the performance to make it more interesting, more of an all-around art project.” said Amelia Juniper Radtke band member of the Big Bugs. “I’m really into taking people into different places, mentally.

Like if you are at a show and put into a trance, that is what I try to do with my music.” said Gold. “I want to portray freedom and things that are way bigger than us and our lives.” said Benedetto.

“I feel like if you’re coming from a more disenfranchised place, a place of more exclusion or oppression. It is harder to get out there. I would say that music is more of a straight white man’s world, so I’m really into putting

on shows where it is queer people, women, you know a place that we can share with each other and also just build and grow in a climate where it is without judgment and exclusion.” said Gold.

Special holiday programs set for Living Desert Zoo and Gardens Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will be hosting several special events throughout the holiday season.

First is the Holiday Bells Concert on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 2 - 3 p.m. in the Visitor Center, featuring holiday hand bell music performed by the Touch of Joy Ringers.

Holidays with the Animals will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 1 - 3 p.m. Children can make holiday cards and treats for their favorite Living Desert animals and there will be free face painting.

On Dec. 16, the Assai String Quartet will perform special holiday music from 2 - 3 p.m.

All of these programs take place in the Visitor Center and are offered free of charge.

People may also leave donations of non-perishable food items, new books and toys under The Giving Tree

through Dec. 16. Donations will be distributed to Jonah’s Food Pantry, the Battered Families Shelter and Christmas Anonymous.

Regular admission fees will apply for those wishing to enter the zoo (children 6 and under free, 7-12: $3, 13 and up: $5). The zoo is open every day except Christmas from 9 a.m. until the last entry at 3:30 p.m.

When women transition from the shelter to their new apartment or home, they are usually starting from scratch. Many do not have even basic kitchen equipment, so the Nest staff tries to piece together a “starting over kit” that might include dishes, glasses, towels, quilts or pans. Fort Stanton Cave Study Project honors two with Caver Hall of Fame awards

For nearly two years, Adam Lenzo has been helping deliver Senior Care Food Boxes to some of the 40 recipients that receive a box each month.

As part of his home school curriculum, Adam needed to write a letter to a business. This is also part of his service to community for Boy Scouts. Adam decided to write to Thriftway manager, Duane Purnell and tell him about the Senior Food Care Box program that helps low income elderly with 30 pounds of

FSCSP volunteers have mapped, surveyed and explored this unusual region for almost five decades! Approximately 20 miles of underground caverns and cave passages, including the now ten mile long Snowy River Passage, have been mapped. Incredible beauty and yet some of the roughest going because of break downs, and meandering and fragile passages have presented challenges at every turn.

The goal is to continue recognizing these contributions and to encourage younger folks to follow in their footsteps. This research and exploration is exciting and every expedition fielded yields incredible results and challenges.

Each year there are three ten-day field expeditions with dozens of volunteers coming from Arizona, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.

Warm Coats for Kids drive underway With the winter storm season on the way, the Optimist Club of Ruidoso has launched its annual Warm Coats for Kids drive across Lincoln County and Mescalero. Donated new or gently used warm coats for children and youth are being accepted at various business and institutional locations with a marked Christmas paper wrapped box in Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs.

Coats are collected, cleaned and distributed to children and youth around Lincoln County and the Mescalero Reservation. Cash donations

toward the purchase of new coats are also accepted.

Families needing coats should contact Christian Services at 2574381.
