K-BOB’S® experiences major growth despite economy The business model of offering good, fresh food at affordable prices is resonating in smaller to midsize communities in the south and southwest. The K-BOB’S Steakhouse brand has seen aggressive growth over the past 12 months despite the current economy and rising gas prices.

Already this year, K-BOB’S opened two new locations and renovated two existing units. Wharton, Texas, just outside of Houston on Highway 59, and Woodward, Okla., are now the homes of the new restaurants. These openings follow four other openings over the past 12 months in Fredericksburg, Portland, Rockport and Calallen, Texas. Plans are in place to open one more unit before the close of 2012 in eastern New Mexico.

K-BOB’S has partnered with Heritage Partners of Chicago to fund this growth over the past 12 months, with additional funding committed for

26 stores over the next five years.

In the first five months of 2012, K-BOB’S same-store sales jumped 2.55 percent over 2011 and showed a system-wide sales improvement of 26.6 percent.

Ed Tinsley, past chairman of the National Restaurant Association and Managing Member of Tinsley Hospitality Group LLC, the franchisor of the K-BOB’S Steakhouse brand based out of Santa Fe, comments: “We are seeing a renewed vigor in our brand, our company culture and our menu.

The Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame & Western Heritage Center sponsors the “Staked Plains Roundup” event each year that shares the awareness of our history and culture. They introduce elementary students to the way of life of those who settled Lea County with demonstrations on how the settlers survived on what they made for themselves.

AF to develop waste-to-energy facility on Holloman AFB The Air Force Real Property Agency announced June 21 that the Air Force intends to enter into exclusive lease negotiations with New Generation Biomass, LLC, for the development of a 20 megawatt biomass/ waste-to-energy facility on approximately 80 acres on Holloman AFB. The property is managed by the 49th Wing at Holloman AFB. This is a single parcel of land. The lease is not expected to result in an annual rent payment or in-kind consideration exceeding $750,000; therefore, this is intended only as a courtesy Congres-

sional Notification. 10 U.S.C. 2667(h) (2) provides an exception to use of competitive procedures for the lessee when it is determined the public interest will be served as a result of the lease. The Air Force intends to commence negotiations soon after receipt of notification.

The Chamber Music Festival strives to bring the best in classical chamber music to the Ruidoso area for the education and enrichment of the lives of Lincoln County students, residents and visitors to the area.

This past year, the arranged for the Amelia Piano Trio to visit our area and provide 5 school concerts and an evening concert for the public.

Accepting the award representing our grant of $2,000 is Dan Hood.

This year, they worked to improve the baseball field so that the little league teams would have a safe place to play baseball. They were awarded a grant in the amount of $8,000.

Hubbard Foundation Grant Program Grant proposals are accepted until July 31 from counties, municipalities, public schools and 501-c-3 non-profit organizations in Chaves, Curry, Eddy, Lea, Lincoln, Otero and Roosevelt Counties. Successful grants from $1,000 to $20,000 will be awarded in November, 2012.

Proposals should improve the quality of life in a specific area. Requests for general operation, personnel costs or personal grants will not qualify. ‘Fight like a girl’

August 30, 2005 is a date burned into Debra Gotovac’s memory. It’s the day she was told she had breast cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and seven years later, she’s a survivor.

She’s also the owner of horse, Swingin Daddyo, who’s earned more than $700,000 in race wins.

“It seemed like whenever I wore my breast cancer t-shirt he won,” says Gotovac, whose shirt’s words say, “Fight like a girl.” The shirt was so effective she made sure others had one during races. Those who surround Swingin Daddyo’s history have connections with breast cancer. His breeder, Linda Alumbaugh was diagnosed with the disease, along with trainer Brad Bolen’s mother.

“I was speaking with Brad one day while I was taking a round of chemo. When I told Brad where I was he told me his mom was there as well, receiving her chemo. I looked and Willa Dean Bolen was right beside me. We got to know each other while

we were both taking treatment that day,” says Gotovac. Tragically, Bolen passed away several years ago as her breast cancer metastasized to her brain.

In the horse racing business for more than ten years, she’s an active owner who doesn’t stand on the sidelines. Gotovac used to donate a percentage of her wins to breast cancer issues. She’s hit a dry patch lately but it hasn’t stopped her from giving to the cause.

She currently has nine horses at the Downs and will participate in Saturday’s festivities. Swingin Daddyo, retired from racing, will be present in all his glory.

Gotovac speaks about what she’d like women to know. “The first thing I’d tell women everywhere is to go for their annual mammogram and do monthly self exams. If they do find something and are told it’s nothing to worry about, get it checked in six months. And build a support system and have faith. Miracles still happen.”

Gotovac is proof positive.

Debra Gotovac’s most important horse has been Swingin Daddyo with a racing resume’ that includes 28 starts with six wins and earnings of $718,108. Swingin Daddyo won the 2010 Rainbow Derby, placed second in the 2010 Ruidoso Derby – missing first by a neck – and qualified for the 2009 All American Futurity and 2009 Ruidoso Futurity.
