The Snidow Museum of Art announces its inaugural exhibit in partnership with The Hubbard Museum of the American West

By Eugene Heathman and Sue Hutchison Beginning in August, SMA will showcase Gordon Snidow’s documentation of the American West through his eyes. Dedicated space at the Hubbard Museum of the American West in Ruidoso Downs has been offered with the exhibit running through October.

The Snidow Museum of Art is finalizing negotiations and will announce soon their interim location to the Ruidoso Free Press. With the capital campaign in full swing to secure funding for the permanent site on Hwy 48 in Alto, SMA will begin its mission of providing a community resource during fundraising. The Snidow Museum of Art’s mission is to construct a one-ofa-kind museum to celebrate Gordon Snidow’s contributions to the humanities. “I don’t ever want the sun to set on the American Cowboy’s way of life,” says Snidow. The final location will offer community venues unmatched in Lincoln County and will offer classroom space, civic event locations and will host traveling art exhibits.

Situated along the junction of Highway 48 and 220, and Gray Fox Lane near Ruidoso is the proposed Snidow Museum of Art. With tall, whispering pines, Little Creek flowing on its border, gentle slope of the land, natural beauty awaits guests. It’s as if this plot of land was created specifically to become home to an international art destination.

to paved, ample parking areas, complete with walkways, handicapped and RV/bus parking. A drive-through road makes exits simple for large vehicles.

Outdoor and indoor spaces are compatible, making the museum a place for a variety of events to thrive.

The Snidow Museum of Art is a community-minded destination. Large, open spaces, conducive to social events as well as educational classes, invite the public to enjoy SMA year-round. The allure and quality of six available social areas offer the community spectacular venues for weddings, receptions, special events and parties. There is no comparable venue in Lincoln County.

Gordon Snidow, local and worldrenowned contemporary western artist, is the inspiration for the birth of a new museum. In mere months, the conversation between two friends last summer has developed at a gallop into a working project. The museum is becoming reality as architects and the SMA board of director’s works together in finalizing the concept which will bring international notoriety to Lincoln County.

Snidow’s love for art developed at an early age. In grade school he showed remarkable artistic talent. Continuing through high school, his abilities were commissioned in various ways; school administrators capitalized on Gordon’s talents and he redesigned his school’s logo. Upon commencement, Gordon’s parents, when faced with their son’s desire to be an artist determined nothing would stand in his way.

Ruidoso Art Festival celebrates 41 years The Ruidoso Fine Art Festival, first held in 1971, is recognized by the Harris Poll as one of the top Juried Fine Art Shows in the United States. This year’s featured Lincoln County artist will be Michael Hurd, son of famed artists Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth.

He will be signing prints of his painting “Winter Bramble” on July 28. Lincoln County is proud of the Hurd-Wyeth legacy. In 1995 Michael was named “New Mexico’s Distinguished Artist.”

Waddie Mitchell was a real cowboy who became a world-renowned cowboy storyteller and poet, enchanting contemporary audiences with tales of life in the rugged West. Nicknamed “Waddie” (a synonym for ‘cowboy’) by his father, spent most of his time with real cowboys and at night listened to their stories and memorized their poems. He dropped out of school at age 16 to become a full-time wrangler and chuck wagon driver. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. on a 24,000-acre ranch where he broke and trained horses for the U.S. Cavalry. He has won numerous honors for his poetry and storytelling, and was inducted into the Cowboy Poets and Singers’ Hall of Fame.

Musical theater comes to the Warehouse in Ruidoso An actor from California and a church reformer from Texas are bringing an original two-man play about the amazing Wesley brothers to the Warehouse Sunday, July 29.

“John & Charles: Sing Lustily and with Good Courage” is a two-man musical drama depicting a conversation the Wesley brothers might have had in their later years. They will discuss dramatic and often tragic events that led Charles to write his hymns, and then they will sing some of them.

“John & Charles” will entertain and inspire anybody who believes the

church should be a force in the world rather than merely a passive presence.

Come and meet John and Charles Wesley, and prepare to be thrilled as they “sing lustily and with good courage!”

Mariachis and the full moon walk in Carlsbad

On Wednesday, Aug. 1, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will host a performance of Mariachi music by the local group Mariachi Unido beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Full Moon Walk will follow with the entrance time limited to between 8 - 8:30 p.m. The Mariachi performance is free; however, regular entrance fees will apply for the Moon Walk (adults $5, children 7-12 $3, children 6 and under free). Docents will illuminate the animals but adults may carry a flashlight to use on the trail. For more information, call 575-887-5516.

Glencoe farmer’s market opens

This year the 1st Farmer’s Market in Glencoe began July 18 from 9 - 11 a.m. to farmers/gardeners that have enough fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, squash, onions, garlic, lettuce and cabbage) to sell for Wednesday’s market.

In the weeks to come the group anticipates that there will be more farmers/ gardeners participating as the season ripens local fruits and vegetables. Reminder for H.S. graduates – GEAR UP Aug. 1 deadline

The Aug. 1 deadline is fast approaching for 2012 public high school graduates in Chaves County to take advantage of the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) scholarship to help pay for their college education.

GEAR UP Scholarships are available to 2012 graduates of Dexter, Goddard, Hagerman, Lake Arthur and Roswell high schools who were enrolled during the 2010-2011 academic year.

ENMU-Roswell officials say this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Attending ENMU-Roswell is free for GEAR UP students, but the scholarship can also be used at any degree granting institution in the U.S. To obtain the scholarship

award, graduates must take their original high school transcript, their birth certificate and a class schedule or bill from the college they will attend, in addition to the Scholarship Acceptance form, to the ENMU-Roswell Financial Aid office.

Priority status will be given to students who submit their information by Aug. 1. The form is on the website, www. roswell.enmu.edu. Click on the GEAR UP slide from the home page.

Graduates can also call 624-7294 to speak with an advisor or call the Financial Aid office at 624-7039 to ask questions about the GEAR UP scholarship. GEAR UP is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored by ENMU-Roswell.

Traditional Western medicine and/or complementary or alternative treatments: How do I choose?

By Jennifer Chadwick There seems to be a majority of individuals now that are choosing complementary, herbal, alternative, and/ or homeopathic treatments. Some people choose these options in addition to traditional western medicine, and others choose it in place of traditional medicine.

The problem is that many healthcare providers are ordering tests and medications for their patients, and their patients do not disclose what all they are actually doing. For the most part, this is not a major problem, but in some cases, it can present conflicts in treatment. There are some herbs that conflict with medications for heart conditions or high blood pressure. Oncologists prefer that their patient do not take any herbal or homeopathic medicines while receiving chemotherapy. Part of the problem is that there is little research on some of the herbal or supplemental products and their interactions with prescription medications, and rather than create a potential problems, physicians discourage their use.

Herbal products that can cause problems with blood pressure and heart medications include Hawthorne

Berry and Licorice. Saw Palmetto and Garlic should not be taken if you are on anti-coagulants such as Coumadin (Warfarin), or Plavix. Omega-3 Fish Oil supplements can prolong bleeding time as well. Many traditional healthcare providers are unfamiliar with herbalprescription interactions. However, most stores that sell herbal products have a guidebook that you can look at to determine if there are potential interactions between your herbs and supplements and prescription medications.

Alternative or complementary treatments such as acupuncture, massage, Reiki and healing touch, yoga, Tai Chi and biofeedback have no known negative side effects, and can frequently assist in managing side effects of chemotherapy or radiation treatments, as well a promote an improved sense of well-being that can aid in recovery of many diseases.

The most important thing you can do is to be proactive in your own care, do your homework in evaluating herbal or homeopathic products and supplements, and be honest with all your healthcare providers.

Free community health fair scheduled The annual free Community Health Fair will be held this Saturday, July 28 at the Roswell Boys and Girls Club, 200 South Garden from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free services offered will include blood sugar and cholesterol screening, height, weight and blood pressure checks, EKG’s and body fat analysis. Individuals who want blood sugar screening should not eat or drink after midnight for best results. Physicians and registered nurses from the community will be available to answer questions and provide counseling services for those who attend.

Numerous exhibitors will provide educational and resource information. There will be many free items for children, so plan to attend! Free immunizations for children 2 months to 18 years old will also be given by the Roswell Health Office.

Basket weaving at the Rascal Fair Rascal Fair is sponsoring a basket making class Saturday, July 28 at White Oaks with Nancy Louise Groethe.

Nancy will guide the students through the construction of their own traditional egg basket which they will take home at the end of the class. Nancy is a skilled basket maker and gifted teacher who will share her knowledge of basketry construction, tools, materials and her recipe for native walnut dye which she uses. ‘Stop the Presses’ The Cloudcroft Light Opera Company (CLOC) will present “Stop the Presses” at the open air Zenith Park Pavilion on Aug. 31st and Sept, 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m.

The CLOC was organized to provide entertainment for the local visitors to Cloudcroft and was so successful as to enable the organization to evolve into providing scholarships for the local high school graduates and monetary help during the year to selected events for the enjoyment and education of our young adults. I saw a sign on a cemetery fence a while back that read, NO BURIALS WITHOUT PERMISSION! and I remember thinking to myself, “Is this really a problem? Are people actually burying their dead relatives in the middle of the night?”

“Well Ed, Aunt Ida’s dead. What’cha recon we should ought’a do?”

“Ain’t but one thing to do, Earl, I figure. You best fetch them shovels

and lanterns, and we take her down to the cemetery tonight and burry her proper.”

“That’s good thinking Ed. Ida always said that you was the smart one --but what should we do about her mean old dog?”

“Here give me one of them shovels . . . Thump! . . . I think that’s what she would have wanted.”

Wonderful watermelon An excellent way to stay hydrated during the hot summer months is to enjoy plenty of watermelon. This delicious and sweet gift from nature is a great source of beta-carotene, vitamin C and potassium. The rind can also be eaten and has valuable amounts of chlorophyll which is beneficial for our immune system. The black seeds contain curbocitrin, which is assistive in strengthening our kidneys.

When choosing the perfect melon, you will want to choose one that appears a little heavy for its size to ensure proper juiciness and sounds hollow when thumped.

Choose a melon that has a yellowish or cream colored bottom which will reflect its ripeness, and stay away from melons with green or white bellies.

Here are a few other fun facts about watermelon: • They contain 92 percent water and have less sugar than an apple.

• They are applauded in the medical world for their anti-cancerous properties.

• They are nature’s simplest hangover cure.

• They’re beneficial when fasting, and detoxifying the body.

• They can assist with healthy weight loss.

Watermelon can be enjoyed all by itself, frozen in chunks as a snack or added to make a beverage.

Strawberry melon pops - mix three cups of watermelon chunks and two cups of fresh strawberries (minus the green tops) in a blender then pour in an ice tray. Wait half an hour or until mixture has a somewhat firm consistency then add popsicle sticks and freeze for two hours or until fully frozen and serve.

Cucumber melon juice - add contents of watermelon, (scraping inside of watermelon rind for maximum nutritional benefit) and peeled cucumber to juicer and then “juice.” Next pour over ice and serve or pour in a pitcher and refrigerate for later. If a juicer isn’t available, this recipe can be turned into a frozen beverage by adding watermelon, cucumber and ice cubes into a blender and mixed until a desired consistency is reached.

Free fiddle concert in Carrizozo On Sunday, July 29, Russell Burris and the Triple RRR Express will play their toe-tapping fiddle music from 5 -7 p.m., at McDonald Park in Carrizozo. Flying strings will get everyone up dancin’! The Carrizozo Woman’s Club will sell cold drinks and burgers hot off the grill. Bring a lawn chair or kick off your shoes and dance in the park!

As always, this Carrizozo Music in the Parks concert is free.

Fiddler Russell Burris has played music all his life. Hailing from a Silver City ranch, Russell started playing for dances and in clubs in high school, then paid his way through NMSU with his flying fingers. He won the Arizona State Fiddling Championship three years in a row and is a national fiddle contest judge.

Russell, now living on a ranch outside of Capitan, has played in clubs and for dances all over the Southwest and plays often at Laughing Sheep Farm in Lincoln,

and clubs in Artesia and Roswell. The other ‘R’s are Ron Becker from White Oaks on lead guitar, and Tim Rice from Capitan with guitar and vocals. Ron has toured Europe, worked for music studios in LA, and loves the creative aspect of music. Tim Rice plays everything from jazz to country and sings a ‘mean’ ballad.

Triple RRR Express plays western swing, a few Mexican tunes and some old-time cowboy tunes that were popular in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Come join us for a varied and fun concert.

Plan to come early and browse the shops and galleries along historic 12th Street.
