A look at the year revealing a community of creators in the mountains, the deserts and all around

By Rosalyn Stevenson In 2013, the Ruidoso Free Press printed in the Zine about 51 stories with photos from this writer, mainly interviews and chats with some amazing people.

Amongst these stories have been, to name a few, a writer known across the nation who is almost as much a legend as those she writes about (Elizabeth Fackler); artists whose works will be visible in the museums of the area for generations, perhaps centuries (Peter Rogers; William Goodman; Ven Voisey; Jessica Kirkpatrick; Derek Chan); American crafts men and crafts women and artists who labor with their hands and the materials of the earth to bring beauty into the world (Georgia Stacy; Mike Lagg; Steve Sabo; Jerry Longbotham; Yolanda and Robert Espinosa; Zoë de Negri; Lay Powell; Rory Combs) artists from near and far whose one passion is to express the ineffable for those of us who cannot (James Tsoodle; Cheryl Gaer Barlow; Kathleen Cotton) contemporary artists living quietly in country studios who are gaining world recognition through their work (Paula J. Wilson) and many more.

We have learned that a little boy drawing at the kitchen table with only a pencil and a piece of writing paper as tools can grow up to be a master draftsman, an artist who brings honor to the title “American Western Artist” (Virgil Stephens).

We have learned that a young girl who was rejected for art school because she had no money for a proper portfolio and who dropped out of high school because of the despair, can go on to become

a recognized, sought after sculptor, whose works are collected by celebrities (Misha Malpaca).

We have met a female woodcarver who did not let loss of her sight keep her from touching and carving wood (Madeleine Sabo) and a young man who, though he is known nationwide as a tough mountain boarder, is not afraid to sit on the couch and knit with his grandmother, and is brainy enough to make a business of the hats they make (Matt Silva).

We have been introduced to filmmakers who break new ground as they strive to advance the tech-

nology of film making through digital media (Jay Tavare; Brett Nichols; Alan Trever; Dusty Deen).

We have seen job creating programs in the film industry developing in junior and high schools (Desert Lights Film Festival) and in local branches of universities (Roswell, ENMU and Ruidoso ENMU).

We have met a man who is so modest in his demeanor you would never guess that he was the man who dealt the World Series of Poker for many years (Gary Morgan) and his brother who is a regular on New Mexico movie sets (James Lane).

Through these stories and many others, we have come to see that our part of the Southwest in New Mexico is positively brimming over with interesting people. The community of creators is alive and well in the mountains and the deserts, in the high and the low places, the visible and the hidden places, and we have seen that artists of high reputation (Susan Weir-Ancker) can and do attract teachers and artists of world-class ranking to the area to enhance and enliven even more this broadly diverse community (Joe Bova, Fulbright Fellowship winner).

The response to these stories, from the artists and the public as well, has been tremendous and I am pleased and proud to have been able to work with the Ruidoso Free Press to shine the light of public recognition on the people who agreed to be interviewed by me in 2013.

The year 2014 promises to be just as full of insight into creative, interesting and colorful lives!

New Year’s traditions around the world

United States

Probably the most famous tradition in the United States is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, New York City, at 11:59 p.m. Thousands gather to watch the ball make its one-minute descent, arriving exactly at midnight. The tradition first began in 1907. The original ball was made of iron and wood; the current ball is made of Waterford Crystal, weighs 1,070 pounds, and is six feet in diameter.

Another American tradition is the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The Tournament of Roses parade that precedes the football game on New Year’s day is made up of elaborate and inventive floats. The first parade was held in 1886.

A traditional southern New Year’s dish is Hoppin’ John – black eyed peas and ham hocks. An old saying goes, “Eat peas on New Year’s day to have plenty of everything the rest of the year.”

Hogmanay (Scotland)

New Year’s jokes

The birthplace of “Auld Lang Syne” is also the home of Hogmanay (hog-mah-NAY), the rousing Scottish New Year’s celebration (the origins of the name are obscure). One of the traditions is “first-footing.”

Shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve, neighbors pay visits to each other and impart New Year’s wishes.

The Edinburgh Hogmanay celebration is the largest in the country, and consists of an all-night street party.

Oshogatsu (Japan)

The new year is the most important holiday in Japan, and is a symbol of renewal. In December, various Bonenkai or “forget-the-year parties” are held to bid farewell to the problems and concerns of the past year and prepare for a new beginning.

Misunderstandings and grudges are forgiven and houses are scrubbed. At midnight on Dec. 31, Buddhist temples strike their gongs 108 times, in an effort to expel 108 types of human weakness. New Year’s day itself is a day of joy and no work is to be done. Children receive otoshidamas, small gifts with money inside. Sending New Year’s cards is a popular tradition – if postmarked by a certain date, the Japanese post office guarantees delivery of all New Year’s cards on Jan. 1.

Spain

The Spanish ritual on New Year’s eve is to eat twelve grapes at midnight.

The Netherlands

The Dutch burn bonfires of Christmas trees on the street and launch fireworks. The fires are meant to purge the old and welcome the new.

Greece

In Greece, New Year’s Day is also the Festival of St. Basil, one of the founders of the Greek Orthodox Church. One of the traditional foods served is Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake. A silver or gold coin is baked inside the cake. Whoever finds the coin in their piece of cake will be especially lucky during the coming year.

His fiction has been reprinted in The Best American Short Stories and The Prize Stories: The O’Henry Awards.

He has twice won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, was awarded a Major Artist Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council in1991 and was recipient of the 2004 Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award.

Stevenson: Lee, of the many awards you’ve received, which is the most valued by you?

Abbott: The Distinguished Alumni Teaching Award at Ohio State University. I’m very proud of that. It meant that I was having an effect in the classroom. In other words, I was having the same effect on my students that great teachers had on me as I tried to learn the writer’s art.

Stevenson: What great teachers are you referring

to?

Abbott: Specifically two or three people from

New Mexico State University where I got my B.A. a guy named Mark Medoff, a playwright and screen writer, and a considerably less well-known man, James Leary, who was my undergraduate adviser, a terrific man who wrote pulp fiction. He wrote for True Confession Magazine. He wrote stories like, “Venusians Made Me Their Love Slave.”

The nice thing about working with Jim was he didn’t give a hoot about my “artistic” ambitions. He insisted that I be first and foremost an expert craftsman. That was wonderful training, great discipline.

He was also the first one to turn me onto Eudora Welty, who became one of my gods. Back in the day they had what was called “The Cabman Records,” which were recordings of writers. He happened to have a record player in his office, so he put on “Why I Live At The PO” by Eudora Welty, and I was hooked.

Also people in the classroom who had time for my silly questions, had time to read the really juvenile drafts of things that I hope have been shredded somewhere along the line. They put great books in my hand, they made me understand and claim citizenship in a literary universe that I had not had

before. I was just a kid from Las Cruces, well out of the literary main stream.

John Cheever is another influence. I’ve taken to describing myself as the child of the backstreet liaison between Eudora Welty and John Cheever. If you can understand that, you are well on your way to understanding my sense of humor.

called: “Identity Card” by F.M. Esfandiary. I liked it enough so she gave me a second book of his called, “The Beggar,” followed by “The Flowers” by Jean Genet. I don’t know what she saw in me that she thought would be an audience for these very peculiar volumes.

The second thing was, a book store opened in Las Cruces called: “Books Galore and More” run by a woman named Arlene Belkin. I started wandering in there with some regularity. I don’t know what I was looking for necessarily, but Arlene would put a book in my hands in exchange for whatever money I had stolen from my father’s wallet.

Then she gave me “Absalom Absalom” by William Faulkner, and a strange thing happened. What was I, 13, 14, something like that, I was a normal, red blooded American boy who would much rather be out playing baseball than reading, and yet, there I was, “Absalom Absalom” in one hand and the dictionary in the other hand, reading two or three sentences and looking up the two or three words I didn’t know, committing them to memory. I can still remember - miasma, effluvia, things like that.

Those are words that are just not in a 13-year-old kid’s vocabulary. There was something compelling about the narrative, the drama on the page that made me stay and do all this work. So I’d have to say that having the good fortune of wandering into that bookstore and having that relationship with Arlene was indispensable to my development.

Abbott: My parents for all their faults were readers. Books, magazines and newspapers were in the house. I think that at some point I must have looked around and said to myself, “That must be a pretty beguiling activity, because these people could be doing something else and yet here they are book in hand.”

Contemporary American Author matize it, but it was a very weird mixture. Our mother was drunk by 6 o’clock in the morning at the moment my father was going off to work. The house was gloomy, dark and I felt there were secrets everywhere that I was not privy to. And they were scary secrets. But owing to the sort of boy I was, I sublimated everything and internalized all their trouble. I acted out in school. In fourth grade I ran away from school every day for about four months. Mr. Taylor the principal would come to the edge of the playground and say, “Lee if you leave the school grounds I am going to have to report you as truant, then you’re going to be in real trouble. Why don’t you just come to the office with me now and take a couple of swats and we’ll start all over. So I’d say, OK. I liked Mr. Taylor… nice guy. He later became the school superintendant in Las Cruces; he was sergeant in the House of Representatives in New Mexico for many, many years.

I would also routinely disfigure myself, cut myself, give myself haircuts without benefits of mirrors, was angry, got in fist fights all the time. It took the light and steady touch of a lot of interested grown ups to steer me in the right direction.

I remember being in the seventh grade and taking what was called “Fused English,” which meant taking three hours of English each day, having to write. I liked it, got patted on the back for it. I learned lots of valuable lessons about teaching by being exposed to people who gave a hoot about what happened in the classroom.

Stevenson: What role does the writer play in today’s America?

Abbott: That’s a really big question. First of all when I sit down at the keyboard or with a pad of paper and a pencil I’m not thinking about my role as a writer in America. I’m just thinking about how to make a good story, and dealing with the troubles peculiar to that. Better minds than mine have argued that the writer is America’s

conscience. I can see where that might be true. I’m just trying to account for the here and now as I understand it and can imagine it in the lives of others.

No matter the here, no matter the now.

I’m pretty much the writer I am on the page now because of a discovery I made about myself 40 years ago. I was asked to participate in a symposium for Harper’s Magazine.

The question was what it meant to be a Southern writer. First of all I disabused them of the notion that I’m a Southern writer. I’m a Southwestern writer, if these distinctions matter, and I just don’t think they do. But it gave me an opportunity to really come to grips with the question of how do I end up sounding how I sound? And it came to me that that is the direct result of admitting to myself that I was not an Ernest Hemingway, not a Faulkner, not a Fitzgerald and I was not anybody else. I was just a kid who knew two or three things. One of them was, I knew my landscape. I know that six or seven hundred square miles between Lordsburg and Lubbock, say, of desert. I know the language there that’s spoken, and that’s the language that showed up on my page. And that’s the landscape against which all the really important things ever happened to me, all the firsts – first love, first sex, first death, first disappointment, first triumph. All the firsts happened in that spare and austere world.

I can’t sound like anybody else. But I did. Early in my career I published maybe a dozen stories that were all well put together, but that had nothing that mattered at their core. They were just skills that I was displaying.

Stevenson: At present you live in Billy the Kid Territory in New Mexico. If Billy the Kid happened to take one of your writing classes, what advice would you give him?

Abbott: I’ve seen some of the Kid’s writing. He wrote a letter to Lew Wallace, the governor of New Mexico asking for a pardon, and it was actualContinued on pg. 9

New Year’s happenings around Ruidoso By: Hilary Romig Bring in the New Year with a memorable celebration. This year, residents of Lincoln County have many choices when it comes to choosing a place to go out for New Years’ Eve. In Midtown, Grace O’ Malley’s pub is hosting an Old West-themed party.

Tickets are $20 per person, though tables are for sale as well. The party is for adults 21 and over and there will be a DJ, a chuck wagon buffet, dessert and a champagne toast. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Also in Midtown, Lucy’s will be open with their regular hours and WPS will start their night at 6 p.m. with a $20 cover charge. “There will be a live band from 8:30 until closing. At midnight party favors and free champagne will be given out,” said Wayne Shockey. WPS has a capacity limit of 200.

Another celebration in the area will be held at Cree Meadows. The

party starts at 7 p.m. and goes until midnight. “Tickets are $25 for singles and $40 per couple. We will be having the Terry Bullard Band play at 7:30,” said Cheryl Lucero of Cree Meadows.

On the menu there will be numerous choices of appetizers and a champagne toast at the end of the night. For more information call: 575-257-2733.

Rio Grande Grill and Tap Room will be open past midnight.

The Inn of the Mountain Gods will be starting their celebrations at 7 p.m. with a Rhythm and Blues theme.

Fishing report for Southeast NM Bataan Lake: Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs and Power Bait. A few fish were also taken by anglers using spinners. No reports on other species.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 20 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and copper John Barrs.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and garlic scented PowerBait.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Trout fishing was good using garlic scented PowerBait, salmon eggs and small spoons. No reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: Trout fishing at the Devil’s Inkwell was good this past week. Anglers did well using rainbow and chartreuse PowerBait.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, garlic cheese, PowerBait and small spinners.

Chaparral Park Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good for anglers using PowerBait and salmon eggs fished just

off the bottom.

Stevenson: Is political correctness hurting American literature?

Abbott: Yes. It’s a form of censorship and I’m opposed to censorship.

We have an amendment that protects our right to say any thing we want.

My test is: is it accurate? There are no words to be afraid of, only untruths can hurt us.

Stevenson: How can you sum up what you want to say to people through your writing?

Abbott: I don’t really have any-

thing to say. I just have experiences to share. They are imagined experiences for the most part, shaped into what I hope is a compelling narrative.

I want to do to strangers what stranger’s books did to me as a child. I can remember being very small and reading books about Blackbeard the Pirate. You have to remember this is in Las Cruces.

There is not a body of salt water anywhere near the place, and yet there I am on what amounts to the bounding main, the breeze in my hair and a pirate’s patch on my eye, enjoying the heck out of myself. I was transported. I mean to do that to strangers. I want to ravish them as I was ravished.

Julian Lennon talks new documentary and app, collaborating with Steven Tyler

Music from Another Room — After taking a break from music for more than a decade, Julian Lennon restarted his recording career a few years back and, earlier this year, released his latest album, Everything Changes. Now, the elder son of John Lennon is giving fans an in-depth look at the making of that album, and at his life in general, in a new documentary titled Through the Picture Window that’s been incorporated into a recently released multimedia app available for Apple and Android devices.

Lennon tells ABC News Radio that the documentary gives “folks a look at who I am these days, because… I’ve

been out of the public eye for a good 15 years-ish. So, this is for those who want to know a little view through the picture window at what I’m up to and who I am and what I do these days.”

In addition to focusing on Lennon’s musical project, it also delves into his work as a photographer and his philanthropic efforts through his White Feather Foundation charity.

The flick includes interviews with various musical friends and collaborators, including U2’s Bono and Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler. After Tyler tapped Julian to sing backing vocals on a song for Aerosmith’s latest studio release, 2012’s Music from Another Dimension, Lennon asked the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer if he’d contribute to his own album, Everything Changes.

After working out scheduling issues, Tyler and Lennon, along with their respective songwriting collaborators Marti Frederiksen and Mark Spiro, got together and banged out an original tune called “Someday.”

The song features lush, swirling production reminiscent of psychedelicera Beatles and even includes a refrain taken from the Fab Four’s “Baby You’re a Rich Man,” a song Julian’s dad wrote.

Julian says his favorite part of Tyler’s contribution to “Someday” was “his rap-rant at the end of the song, where he shows his voice off and his techniques,” adding, “He’s just an absolute classic, a brilliant, brilliant [singer]... It was an absolute honor to have him come play on the album.”

Not only does Lennon’s new app

feature the Through the Picture Window flick and Everything Changes, but it also houses an alternate, acoustic version of the album, as well as official videos he created for all 14 songs on the record.

Julian tells ABC News Radio that fans also will be able to keep up with all the latest news about his various activities via the program. The app also offers links to his official website, his Facebook page and the White Feather Foundation’s site; direct access to purchase Every Changes via iTunes; and lyrics and sheet music for Lennon’s album.

The acoustic edition of Everything Changes also can be purchased separately as a digital download, as can a DVD version of Through the Picture Window.

Meanwhile, Lennon will be attending next year’s South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, where he’ll take part in an interview and performance event. The conference will run from March 11 - 16.

Lorde sets new digital sales milestone

According to Yahoo! Chart Watch, the singer’s chart-topping, Grammynominated hit has now sold four million downloads. That makes the New Zealand star the youngest artist in digital history to have scored a fourmillion-seller.

Stoney Creek Records — Randy Houser’s career kicked into overdrive this year thanks to his two number-one hits “How Country Feels” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight.”

That means he didn’t have much time to spend at home with his wife, Jess, and young son, West. Now that things have slowed down for the holidays, Randy says he and family are falling off the map to spend time together.

“Most people probably won’t know where we are,” Randy said earlier this month before going underground for the holiday.

He added, “There’s a lot of things I feel I missed out on with my little boy and my wife. I think the biggest thing is while I have a month off, we’re just gonna spend that together and play catch up.”
