Community Drug Coalition of Lea County reminds everyone about National Impaired Driving Prevention Month As we gather with friends and family to share in the holiday season, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month reminds us of the importance of celebrating safely. Every year, accidents involving drunk, drugged, or distracted driving claim thousands of lives, leaving families to face the heartbreak of losing a loved one.

Alcohol and drugs present serious risks to all drivers. It is well known that drugs, including some prescription medications, can impair the skills necessary for safe and responsible driving. Families play an essential

part in stopping impaired driving. By talking about the risks and setting clear expectations, parents and other caregivers can help their children stay safe, sober, and focused on the road.

Hubbard Museum of the American West announces new public hours The Hubbard Museum of the American West announced new hours for public visitation to New Mexico’s first Smithsonian Institution Affiliate museum. The new daily public hours will be 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The daily schedule was approved by the Ruidoso Downs City Council during its regularly scheduled meeting on Dec. 10.

“With the recent expense savings measures enacted by the city council that included a reduction in staff, the elimination of one hour per day of public visitation was the best use of the employee hours available to the museum,“ said Jim Kofakis, museum director. “The council also voted to maintain the seven days per week schedule as recommended by the museum staff versus a five day schedule to diminish the potential impact on services provided by the museum to the community.”

The museum will also be present-

ing to the city council a revised facility rental rate schedule that will include weddings, parties and other social functions as well as a revised meeting room rental policy that will take advantage of the high-tech capabilities of the Johnny & Marty Cope Learning Center. In addition, a strong push with area schools to take advantage of the “Joan Dale’s Magic Bus” field trip grant program will be launched. To date, more than 1,000 students from the local area, as well as schools from as far away as Elida, Roswell and Las Cruces have taken advantage of the transportation payment provided by the program.

Six F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 309th Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., stage at the end of the runway at Holloman Air Force Base, Dec. 7. The 309 FS deployed 18 F-16s and 190 supporting personnel to Holloman AFB to test infrastructure, range, and airspace capabilities to support the F-16 formal training unit, which will be moving to Holloman AFB. Birth of a new movement Cyber security boot camps

By Andrea Reed As the Mayan calendar draws to a close, supporters of the Birth 2012 movement (www.birth2012.com) are organizing small and large birthday celebrations around the globe to rejoice in the birth of a new era on Dec. 22 which includes a local opportunity to celebrate as well.

The purpose of the birthday celebration is not to give in to apocalyptic fears as the Mayan calendar comes to an end, but to promote a collective shift to a new way of thinking. Organizers recognize the power of this once-in-five-thousand year’s defining moment and hope to unify people globally around a commitment to create a world that works for all. An era that is healthy, sustainable, peaceful and prosperous.

To kick off the birthday celebration, people are invited to share in “Three Days of Love” beginning Dec. 20. Individuals are invited to pledge to three days of words and actions of love (http://threedaysoflove.com) to help “create the right spirit of generosity for the beginning of a new era.”

On both the 21st and 22nd, there will be more than 40 major celebrations and numerous smaller community events that bring together cultural and religious leaders, authors, social change advocates and artists together

for meditations, prayers, songs and practices.

In Lincoln County, there will be free opportunities to gather for this intention including the Winter Solstice celebration at the High Mesa Healing Center from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 21 at 101 Mader Lane in Alto, as well as a larger birthday celebration held at Smokey’s Garden at the Smokey Bear Ranger Station on Mechem Dr. Dec. 22 from 5 - 8 p.m.

The birthday party at Smokey’s garden will include music, refreshments, campfire and children’s activities. It is an outdoor event so guests are encouraged to dress warm. Volunteers and donations are still needed.

Along with this movement are key phrases to help guide us through the seasons of this new era. The first is the Winter of Wellness in which we can focus on our personal health, the next is the Spring of Sustainability in which we work toward promoting a healthier environment from water to waste, followed by the Summer of Peace promoting cooperation and learning how to successfully address conflict and the final season is Autumn of Abundance in which we harvest the rewards of our efforts toward a better world.

An intensive one-week class in cyber security will be offered at ENMU-Ruidoso from Jan. 7 through 11. Protecting SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems will be emphasized. Upon completion, students will receive an INFOSEC approved certificate, preparing them for entry-level jobs in governmental, private and military computer security fields. An introductory online class is required before the boot camp to prepare students for more advanced concepts and the CompTIA Security + test.

Eligible students may apply for financial aid through ENMU-Ruidoso Community Education. A SESP (State Energy Sector Partnership Program) grant will cover all costs of the program. For those not qualifying for the SESP grant, funds through the New Mexico Workforce Connection are also available.

Salt Flat, TeXas – A combination of lack of moisture and unseasonably warm weather in far West Texas and southeastern New Mexico has prompted Guadalupe Mountains National Park fire officials to elevate the park’s fire danger rating to HIGH. The rating helps describe the general conditions over an extended area. The HIGH rating indicates that all fine fuels, such a grass, can ignite easily and fires can start quickly from most causes; fires can spread rapidly and short-distance spotting is common; high intensity burning may develop on slopes or in concentrations of fine fuels; fires may become serious and their control difficult unless they are attacked successfully while small. High winds are predicted for this weekend which has prompted the need for heightened awareness about the local conditions and increased potential for wildfires.

Previous years, including 2010 and 2011, experienced similar conditions, which led to the start of early fire seasons. In 2011, large fires were being reported in February and the fire season continued through August.

“This is looking to become another extended fire season, mostly due to the lack of moisture, and the likelihood

of little, if any, significant moisture between now and spring. We may be responding to wildfires during winter and early spring” said park Superintendent Dennis A. Vásquez. Park officials are asking everyone to be vigilant and help minimize the risk of wildfire by following some simple tips: • Don’t park vehicles on dry grass.

• If you smoke, do so in areas that clear of vegetation and dispose of butts in your vehicle ashtray or in receptacles only.

• Remember, it’s illegal to possess or use fireworks on public lands.

• Be aware of your surroundings – fires can start easily and spread quickly.

Artist’s works on display in the library – Enjoy the paintings

A perusal of Jacqueline Kastor’s artwork at the Ruidoso Public Library shows that Jacqueline’s subject matter is varied.

The versatile artist shows her love for the beauty in life as she draws and paints from personal reflections and experiences.

“My interest in New Mexico and the arts is fueled by the unique beauty of the mountains, the deserts and the people of the Southwest,” comments Kastor.

After studying with several artists/instructors, she realized that “...an artist must be ninety percent self-taught in order to grow and develop a personal style.” Kastor is especially interested in the style of French impressionists, such as Monet, and the early Taos artists, like Fechin. Her goals include developing her strong sense of color and interest in texture and design.

Kastor enjoys painting in many mediums and styles.

From her viewpoint, “…to experiment with the extensive variety of materials and subject matters is truly a joy.

I want to focus on painting more of the area in Lincoln County for now. I started with the painting “Sierra Blanca from Monjeau.” It is hanging in the permanent col-

lection of the Ruidoso Convention Center. I have always felt it is a blessing that I get to see the world through an artist’s eye and I like to share some of that with others.

Most of my work is in oils, although there is some of my artwork in the library painted in acrylic and pencil.”

From 1985 through 1998, Kastor and her husband, Gary, were involved with their shop, “Jacque’s Garden Gallery” located in Ruidoso.

She continues to participate in the floral business, but at this point in her life, her purpose is to record though paintings her wonderful visions, both real and dreamed. “Anything to do with the beauty of life, paint, flowers and my family is what I’m all about.”

The best things in life are free As I attempted to write this week’s article on health and wellness, I got a little side tracked as I found myself compiling a list of things in life that I enjoy for free.

It’s not my usual style with recipes, tips and ideas, but writing this list definitely brought a smile to my face and I hope some of these ideas bring a smile to yours. Smiles are always good for the body, mind and soul.

• The sun, kissing my skin • Observing a random act of kindness • The aroma of Café Rio (Midtown, Ruidoso), although I do have to pay for the pizza, the aroma is always a wonderful experience, as the smell comes from the blend of all the items being created, not just my one pizza • Someone offering me a warm and sincere smile • Giving the smile right back • A hug • The twinkle of our magnificent skies at night • Touching a fuzzy kitten • Watching someone else’s child throw a tantrum (really, life is that tough at 4 years old, thank goodness that’s not my child) • Watching a child get excited • Sitting next to the warmth of a fireplace • Watching a butterfly • Snowflakes • Exercising • Friendship • Taking a nice nap • Standing up too fast and experiencing a head rush • Forgiveness (both giving and receiving) • Nothing on my To Do list • Looking at the clouds • The feeling of a cool breeze on a hot summer day

Roswell rancher honored for landscape restoration efforts

ALBUQUERQUE – Rancher Ross Chesser was presented the 2012 Restore New Mexico Award today at the New Mexico 2012 Joint Stockmen’s Convention in Albuquerque for his work to improve range conditions on his ranch and BLM public land allotment near Roswell. The annual award recognizes exemplary efforts to restore New Mexico’s landscapes to a healthy and productive condition.

Ross Chesser has been ranching and farming in the Roswell area for about 50 years. Since 1997, he has also been the grazing permittee on the Huggins Draw BLM allotment located north of Roswell. Mr. Chesser was one of the first permitees in the Roswell Field Office to participate in the Restore New Mexico Program. The first treatment was completed in 2007 which targeted mesquite.

This proved to be a remarkable

success that changed a shrub dominated environment to a rolling, black grama grassland.

To date, about 8,300 acres of mesquite have been treated so far with additional acres planned for the future.

Today, range condition ratings on the allotment are in the high-good to excellent range.

“As result of his dedication to improve productivity and rangeland conditions, even during our extended drought conditions, it is a pleasure to present Ross Chesser with the Restore New Mexico Award,” said Aden Seidlitz, Associate State Director of the BLM. “Ross has exemplified a high level of stewardship by treating mesquite and invasive plants on his private land and BLM allotment and also adjusting livestock numbers to protect and preserve the range resources he relies on,” he added.

Norovirus cases seen throughout NM

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed that cases of norovirus have been occurring around the state. No deaths have been attributed to these infections, but several hospitalizations have occurred. The department is recommending that everyone take precautions, especially around the very young, elderly and immunocompromised who are at risk for more serious illness due to norovirus infection.

“Washing your hands is one of the best ways to protect yourself from norovirus,” said State Epidemiologist Michael Landen, M.D. “If you have norovirus infection, stay home to avoid passing it on to others and definitely keep away from people in long-term care facilities.”

To decrease the risk of getting a norovirus infection, the department recommends that you: • Wash your hands with soapy water for 20 seconds · After using the bathroom · After changing diapers · Before preparing foods · Before eating • Wash your hands more often when someone in your household is sick.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces with a

household bleach solution immediately after vomiting or diarrheal accidents.

• Avoid preparing food for others while you have symptoms and for at least three days after you recover.

• Avoid visiting loved ones in longterm care facilities if you are ill.

Noroviruses are viruses that cause gastroenteritis and inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is often mistakenly referred to as the “stomach flu.” Common symptoms of norovirus infection include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping. Less common symptoms can include low-grade fever or chills, headache and muscle aches.

Symptoms usually begin one or two days after exposure to the virus. Most people recover in one or two days and have no long-term health effects.

Dehydration can be a concern in the very young, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems.

Noroviruses are very contagious.

They are found in the stool (feces) or vomit of infected people. From there, noroviruses are transferred to food, water, or surfaces by the hands of infected people who have not washed adequately after using the bathroom.
