ENMU-Ruidoso works closely with the local New Mexico Workforce Connection office in Ruidoso to help those seeking work in areas such as cyber security and renewable energy. The Workforce Connection serves as the district headquarters for eastern New Mexico and provides employment services to rural areas like Corona. Not all information need be academic or skill-based. movies made in New Mexico. Started in October 2009, a comedy, documentary, drama, film noir or musical is shown each month in the Village Hall. Westerns are particularly popular and the discussions afterwards are telling of the state of ranching and rural life today. The movies are free and Friends of the Library serve popcorn and drinks to the audience. Corona residents are equally involved in the development of ENMU-Ruidoso. Leaders like Betty Ann Bell travel to Ruidoso to serve on boards and let the community know what Corona wants and would like to see this community college bring to this village. As long as there is a desire and a need, ENMU-Ruidoso is committed to serving all the residents of Lincoln County, whether it be scholastic, professional or just for fun.

Busting myths about domestic violence Myth: Alcohol abuse causes domestic violence. Fact: Although there is a high correlation between alcohol or other drug abuse and battering, it is not a cause and effect relationship. We know that frequency and severity of abuse increases, and often dramatically, when the abuser is intoxicated but the abuser is also violent when sober. Abusers commonly use being drunk or high as one of many excuses for their violence and as a way to avoid responsibility for their violence. Stopping the abusers’ drinking will not stop their violence. Substance abuse and domestic violence are co-occurring disorders, meaning they happen together at the same time, but one does not cause the other. “The higher incidence of alcohol abuse among men who batter results from the overlap of two separate social problems. Domestic violence, in its many forms, is part of a batter’s ongoing pattern of abuse and it has little or no distinguishable connection to his use of or dependence on alcohol,” said one of the Nest’s therapists, Maurice Gudgel.
We would like to thank our generous sponsors for a successful 2012 tour Site Sponsors Buy Ruidoso.com Century 21, Aspen Real Estate Fusion Medical Spa Mountain Top Inc Patrick Coyne DDS.,Inc. Southwest Personal Fitness Spencer Theater Visit our web site www.altoartists.com
Often, victims believe the violence is their fault. This is usually the result of much conditioning by the abuser, who blames the victim for his violence. The survivor sometimes rationalizes that they should not have argued with the abuser when he was drunk - “I should have known better.” “It is one of the hardest lessons we teach survivors at the Nest, that they are not responsible for being beaten,” explains Gudgel. “I would always get scared when we were going somewhere where there was alcohol, because he became a different person when he drank. Eventually he went to treatment and got sober. This was the hope I held on to. The first time he beat me while he was sober was two weeks after he returned from treatment. It was worse because I knew alcohol wasn’t to blame, it was just him,” shares a domestic violence victim living at the Nest who wishes to remain anonymous. The Nest Domestic Violence Shelter is located in Ruidoso Downs. Help is available. Please call our hotline, toll free at 1-866-378-6378. All services are free and confidential.

5 reasons yoga can help in your daily life By Shiva Reinhardt Blue Lotus day Spa and yoga studio I can certainly understand feeling intimidated when you can’t do a pose the person next to you seems to be easily doing. But this is where yoga actually starts – in the mind. The word yoga means “union” and people give it many interpretations but I interpret that as union between the body and the mind. When your mind starts giving you resistance like “You’ll never do that pose!” notice that your mind is doing its thing (thinking!) and let it go. Focus back on your breath and your body. In this way we start to give our thoughts, whatever they may be, less importance. So let’s get on to the 5 reasons, shall we? 1. Increase flexibility equals easier to do everyday tasks like washing your own back, painting your own toenails, putting on your own shoes, etc. 2. Increase strength equals lifting the kids or grandkids, groceries, opening doors for yourself, etc.
3. Clean out the cobwebs. When we put our bodies in the weird pretzel positions of yoga, we reach into places that never normally get reached into and bring blood flow and circulations to vital organs and stressed out muscles. 4. De-stress the mind. While you’re focusing so hard on trying to balance in Tree pose, you literally CAN’T think of anything else. Restores your mind to a place of peace so when you do come back to your regularly scheduled problems you can look at them with a fresh perspective. Also, you’ll do less emotional eating 5. Keep or restore range of motion, heal or prevent injury. Every day we do our habitual movements. Yoga breaks us out of those patterns and moves the body in new and healthy ways, breaking up adhesions, scar tissue and keeping you supple so when you have to perform an unexpected movement it won’t break you.

reenergize at destination sanctuaries By Debbie Haines Nix Sanctuary on the River, Inspired Living Center The word sanctuary triggers introspection. Imagine a place designed with you in mind. A relaxing space where your vision will become clear. The sanctuary philosophy at most destination spas is unique in its approach with regard to living a life in balance. Programs are designed with a clear focus in mind, specifically, living an authentic life. This pure and simple aspiration is challenging given the fast pace of everyday living. Retreats, workshops and seminars typically offered are your catalyst for learning, growth and experiencing a sense of peace. The experience promises to assist you in shaping a distinctive yet simple path for living a life of your own choosing based on a new understanding of living authentically. Each destination spa has its own
focus and style but all are casual in their approach upon arrival. You are invited to take the time to set your own pace and quite simply, “Peace Out”. Sit by a river, on top of a mountain, or in a fountain garden and journal, meditate or simply enjoy the natural setting. Spa services are a big part of the experience not to be viewed as just a relaxation opportunity. Most services have a specific healing component and can change your view of how our Western culture treats many ailments. During your time at one of the many destination spas in the Southwest, you will embrace a new appreciation for choosing mental and physical wellbeing and the beauty of the area. Visit www.destinationspagroup.com and find a spa experience that is the perfect sanctuary for you. Bowling: Not just for adults By Todd Fuqua Not too long ago, league play used to be the bread and butter for the Ruidoso Bowling Center. There are still plenty of leagues – Tuesday afternoon seniors, Tuesday and Wednesday night mixed and a Thursday Men’s league, but center owner David Cecil said he’s working harder to bring in more youth and families to the lanes. “We had a great summer, hosting all kinds of birthday and office parties, family reunions, and lots of kids’ groups from Alamogordo, Cloudcroft, Las Cruces and El Paso,” Cecil said. Among the things the bowling center has done to attract the family dynamic is restrict smoking in the building, even though there’s a very popular bar and grill located there. He did it five years ago, before the State of New Mexico banned all smoking inside public buildings, includ-
ing bars and restaurants. He’s so keen on bringing in younger bowlers because of the competition for their time. “With all the other sports out there, it’s been hard to compete for the recreational dollar,” Cecil said. “It’s a good activity. Families and parties come in and like to compete with each other. “Also, you don’t have to do it out in the hot sun,” he added. “You also don’t have to go looking for the ball, it always comes right back to you.”

My name is Antonio. I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when I was three years old. I count carbs to stay alive. I count carbs to figure out how much insulin to give myself. The insulin I give myself is given by my insulin pump that is about the size of a cell phone that I wear around my waist. The insulin is given through a tubular cord that goes into my buttocks that I need to change every three days. If you have read this far and you have diabetes, continue on because this is the right story for you to read. I am excited to share with you what I have found out in my research. This story is about type one diabetes and the latest advances in research and technology. Did you know that you can get type one diabetes when your immune system, which usually fights off bacteria accidentally kills cells in the pancreas that produce insulin? Sometimes your pancreas will produce little or no insulin. So when you have no cells producing insulin, you get diabetes. I’m excited about the prospects of Dr. Aaron Kowalski who has type one diabetes and works on treatment therapies
at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF states progress is advancing on a couple of fronts. One of the devices he is supporting is called the JDRF Artificial Pancreas. The FDA has approved trials for people to wear these devices. The artificial pancreas is a device to help people with diabetes automatically control their blood glucose levels. The insulin pump is a way to manage diabetes without having to give shots every time you eat. With the insulin pump you enter the amount of carbohydrates by just checking the label of what you’re going to eat, and entering it into the pump. When you get the insulin pump you can sync it with your meter to receive your blood glucose number at the pump. If it is synced, when your blood glucose is high it will know how much insulin to give to make your blood glucose go down. I have the insulin pump and it works very well for me. I would recommend it to you if you have diabetes and are reading my story. There is also a device called the insulin pen. The insulin pen is a needle that is used to inject yourself with the insulin needed. The insulin pen is comprised of an insulin cartridge and a dial to measure the dose given. The pen uses disposable pen needles to give the dose of insulin. The pen was introduced and marketed as the Novopen. There are scientists, doctors and researchers working on cures for diabetes. Since I was little I have been hoping for a cure for diabetes, so I do not have to wear my pump and give myself shots. I have great hope in the future of diabetes research.

Tips for healthy knees Catherine Greseth Ruidoso Physical Therapy It’s that time of year again, school is back in session and that means kids are back in action. Ideally, everyone should regularly get three types of exercise to prevent injury to all parts of the body, including the knees: • Range-of-motion exercises to help maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness. • Strengthening exercises to keep or increase muscle strength. • Aerobic or endurance exercises (such as walking or swimming) to improve function of the heart and circulation and to help control weight. Weight control can be important to people who have arthritis because extra weight puts pressure on many joints, including the knee. To keep knee pain and other musculoskeletal pain at bay, it’s important to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle, exercise, get adequate rest, and eat healthy foods. It’s also important for runners and other athletes to perform physical therapist-approved stretching and warmup exercises on a daily basis – especially before beginning physical activity. Although all physical therapists are prepared through education and experience to treat people with knee pain, you may want to consider: • A physical therapist who is experienced in treating people with orthopedic or musculoskeletal problems. • A physical therapist who is a board-certified clinical specialist or who has completed a residency or fellowship in orthopedic physi-
cal therapy, giving the therapist advanced knowledge, experience, and skills that may apply to your condition. You can find physical therapists that have these and other credentials by using Find a PT, the online tool built by the American Physical Therapy Association to help you search for physical therapists with specific clinical expertise in your geographic area. General tips when you’re looking for a physical therapist: • Get recommendations from family and friends or from other health care providers. • When you contact a physical therapy clinic for an appointment, ask about the physical therapist’s experience in helping people with TKR. During your first visit with the physical therapist, be prepared to describe your symptoms in as much detail as possible, and say what makes your symptoms worse.
