The Trinity Christian Academy is a very new private school in Carlsbad and they are exceeding both the enrollment they expected and the education they promised to the students’ parents. One of the pressing needs the staff and Board of the Academy see is to provide laptop computers for each classroom teacher.

With a laptop and internet connection, the teachers can mine the riches of the internet in preparing and presenting current material to the students.

The Junior Service League of Hobbs – through the Foster Care Closet program provides supplies for immediate care of children who are removed from their home and placed in foster care. With Superstar Shoes, these ladies partnered with the Hobbs Municipal Schools’ Mentorship Program to provide shoes to up to 200 students who otherwise would not have them. This organization of ladies was founded in Hobbs in 1956 and worked hard to support children in Hobbs. Accepting the award representing the grant of $5,000 is Lindley Burnett.

Senators praise Sand Dune Lizard listing outcome U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall welcomed a decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to forego adding the Dunes Sagebrush (Sand Dune) Lizard to the Endangered Species List.

The Senators, who learned of the decision this morning, have been actively engaged with the administration as it determined whether listing the lizard was the best course of action based on science and in light of collaboration at the local level that led to Candidate Conservation Agreements. “This is a great example of how voluntary cooperative agreements are being used to help protect a habitat and a species, while allowing oil and gas development to continue in southeastern New Mexico,” Bingaman said. “I hope this process can serve as a model for the future.”

“It’s the result of months of collaboration and serves as a testament to the positive efforts of New Mexico land agencies, ranchers and oil and gas producers who reached a compact that simultaneously protects the local economy and the lizard. The endresult proves that overheated political rhetoric and conflict are not the most effective way to resolve disputes over conservation, and I hope it will serve as a model for future agreements.”

Last year, the New Mexico Senators urged the FWS to delay its decision on the lizard for a few months if it needed more time to analyze the related scientific data.

The FWS honored that request.

Then in April, following meetings with FWS leadership, Udall and Bingaman praised the agency’s efforts in working with ranchers, the oil and gas industry and the New Mexico State Land Office to protect the lizard, and urged the completion

of similar agreements in Texas.

Later in the month, at a hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Udall also discussed the conservation efforts underway in New Mexico with testifying FWS Director Dan Ashe. The Sand Dune Lizard is found only in the shinnery oak dunes of southeastern New Mexico and adjacent Texas.

After initially proposing federal endangered species status for the Sand Dunes Lizard in 2010, pursuant to a litigation settlement, the FWS worked with businesses and local interests to establish additional Candidate Conservation Agreements that will stabilize the species’ population, foster habitat restoration, and allow the oil and gas, and agricultural industries to continue to thrive. More than 90 percent of the lizard’s habitat in New Mexico is protected through the agreements.

The Center for Excellence in Hazardous Materials Management in Carlsbad is the unified permit holder under the CCAs and manages the conservation efforts with FWS and CCA participants.

Mountain Top Mercantile renovates in Cloudcroft

By Sue Hutchison Marc and Belinda Bailey have been busy this spring. Not that they’re not busy the rest of the year. Most mornings at o-dark-thirty will find Belinda at the Mercantile ovens baking pies, artisan breads and doughnuts. The Mercantile has no heater.

The ovens do nicely, in addition to creating an inviting scent each morning. The bakery counter’s display cases empty quickly. Locals know to come early. Travelers have been known to wait until one of the numerous daily batches of baked goods comes out of the oven.

The Baileys bought the mercantile seven years ago. Groceries, produce and sundries, the shop served a vital function for Cloudcroft’s residents.

Ideas began to form and they decided they’d grow the shop into a family friendly destination. “We want everyone to have an old-fashioned experience,” says Belinda, and the Baileys took off in the direction of renovation.

They closed Mountain Top Mercantile early spring, 2012 and began to transform the interior. Expansion of offered services with a family touch was the goal. Several additions have found a new home at the mercantile and have been incorporated. A newly surfaced floor, new shelving and reorganized space were part of the plan.

They reopened April 10 to serve the community.

The Baileys are proud owners of a “new” soda fountain. Built in the 50s, they found it online and brought it to Cloudcroft. In addition to making milkshakes, all the components work and their plan is to create drinks reminiscent of the 50s and 60s. Floats, freezes and shakes, they stock Blue Bell Ice Cream and they’ll attempt to

make what their guests request. The surrounding wood-slab bar was made by a local artist. Baileys invite guests to slide chairs under the bar and enjoy old-fashioned hospitality.

A new deli counter is opposite of the soda fountain. Marc, a certified Angus Beef dealer/carver, can trim out rib-eye steaks to specified thickness at his customer’s request. “If we have it in the store, we’ll do it for you,” he says, and will make sandwiches to order, regardless of what’s on the menu board. He’ll also custom slice Boar’s Head deli meats at his customers’ request. Visitors may eat in the newly designed table area between the deli and soda fountain.

A vintage pot-bellied stove invites guests to sit and enjoy the mercantile.

“We have wonderful customers,” says Belinda and the Baileys like to cater to the locals. “As long as people are coming in, we’ll stay open.” The first weekend after renovation, their bakery counter emptied over and over. Locals and out-of-town regulars kept Belinda baking her signature pies, breads, pastries and doughnuts all weekend.

Future plans include an outdoor dining area and expansion will include an arcade to offer families a place to enjoy. The Baileys realize the need for the community to have a pharmacy, and have entertained the idea of placing one in a corner the mercantile.

Cloudcroft’s Mountain Top Mercantile is located at 105 James Canyon Highway, the main road through the town. Baileys welcome visitors and want to provide a place for friends to relax and pass the time. For hours, baked good or deli orders and information, phone 575-682-2777.

Presence in daily life

By Shiva Reinhardt My main philosophy is that Presence or Awareness Heals. In my yoga classes I teach this in every breath. We start with a meditation checking in with the body and all the sensations there.

Next we move on to the mind, watching our thoughts and noticing what is happening there. And finally noticing our emotions and mood, just assessing what is true for you in that moment.

This practice helps to bring the attention fully into the present moment. We continue this practice throughout the class, mostly focusing on noticing what is happening in the body as we move it in different ways, as well as noticing what thoughts come up to distract us and what emotions bubble up in each pose.

This is one practice that is really training the mind to be present in every single moment of the day. If you are practicing presence when you leave the house, you will be right there when you lock the door—not thinking about what’s coming next, or worrying about

that phone call you just finished – but right there, turning the key in the lock.

So later when you get where you’re going you won’t fret over “Did I lock the door?!”

One of the most important times we can use presence is with our friends and loved ones. Think back to the last time someone really and truly listened to you—eager to hear what you were going to say next. When that happens we feel really cared for, and very safe.

This is the gift you can give to your loved ones. By being truly present with what they are saying—not rushing to tell them about the time that happened to you, or thinking about something else while they’re talking.

Try it next time a friend is telling you a story. Look at them talking.

Breathe deeply. Listen to the words they’re saying and hear the emotions that come through the story. Feel the care in your heart for your friend. You are doing Love-asana, my favorite yoga pose.

Grant funding available for Rural Cooperative Development USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner announced that his agency is accepting applications for the Rural Cooperative Development Grant (RCDG) program.

“Cooperative enterprises often lead economic growth and job creation in rural areas,” Brunner said. “USDA is offering grants to help organizations start co-operatives and expand existing ones or help develop other business opportunities in rural areas.”

USDA is offering the Rural Cooperative Development Grants (RCDG) to non-profit corporations and institutions of higher education. The grants also may be used to conduct feasibility studies, create and implement business plans, and help businesses develop new markets for their products and services.

One-year grants up to $175,000 are available. In most cases, grants may be used to pay for up to 75 percent of the cost of establishing and operating rural cooperative development centers.

Recipients are required to match 25 percent of the award amount. The grant period should begin no earlier than Oct. 1 and no later than Jan. 1, 2013.

In 2011, New Mexico awarded two grants; one to Capacity Builders, Inc. of Farmington to establish the National Center for Rural and Tribal Cooperative Development and one to the Center of Southwest Culture, Inc. of Albuquerque to assist them in continuing the development of cooperative enterprises in northern New Mexico.

Free 3rd annual Ruidoso classical piano recital Bryan Hutchinson will be presenting his third annual classical piano recital on Sunday, June 24, at 3 p.m., at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 1211 Hull Road in Ruidoso.

On the program are solo piano works

by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel, Bela Bartok, and Franz Liszt. The concert is free and open to the public, there will be a reception following. The intention of the recital is to encourage lovers of music, new and old, to enjoy a casual afternoon of classical piano works. Hutchinson feels that especially now, in a time of community loss and grief due to the Little Bear Fire, there is the hope that people will find the time to opt for an hour of peaceful distraction and enjoyment.

Music does not rebuild homes or take away the sadness of loss, but it does work towards soothing the soul and offer a respite from the daily challenges of life.

Hutchinson holds a Master’s Degree of Piano Performance from Michigan State University, a Bachelors Degree of Piano Performance from New Mexico State University, with additional study at Eastern New Mexico University and University of New Mexico. At ENMU he completed all requirements for the piano pedagogy degree; 4 semesters of Pedagogy and supervised teaching, Child and Adolescent Psychology, History and Nature of Piano, and Pedagogy of Theory. He has performed in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. He has accompanied several university choirs and orchestras, various other chamber ensembles, and competed in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition with “Trio Sonor”.

In addition, his accompanying experience includes Bachelor, Masters, Doctoral, and Faculty recitals; pianist for ballet and opera; and many other instrumental and vocal recitals. Post-graduate study includes Aesthetics of Music, Ethnomusicology, and Collaborative Music. He has played piano for 39 years, beginning at the age of 8 years old. He is the pianist at First Christian Church in Ruidoso, and maintains a private piano studio, with students of all ages.

By Sandi Aguilar A cornerstone of Lincoln County for more than 20 years, ENMU-Ruidoso aims to continue its support of creating lifelong learners. Rising attendance and rising student needs have created the need for additional funding. The ENMU-Ruidoso Foundation, beginning May 2011, has been charged with raising funds from private sources with the purpose to expand scholarships, classrooms and activities available in Lincoln County. Development Director Rhonda Vincent, begins her fundraising message with a quote from Warren Buffet, “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

The first tree of $10,000 was provided by an anonymous donor and has spurred the community of philantrhopic giving. Matched by a triple grant from his former company, Steven Miller donated $7,000 and other substantial donations have come from Dr. and Mrs. Clayton Alred and Dr. Clara and John Farah. A van has been purchased with these funds.

The most recent endeavor for philantrhopic inspiration is to create a field flowing with hundreds of American flags. More than 500 flags will be displayed along Highway 70 in front of the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack on Fourth of July. “Each ENMU branch has a foundation or alumni association that helps with getting gifts and grants from individuals and organizations. The ENMU-Ruidoso Foundation is relatively new and this is our first big fundraiser.

The Field of Flags if our visual pledge to higher education,” stated Vincent. The flags have been on sale since Memorial Day and can be purchased through July 4. After placement in the field, the flags will be available for pick up July 7. Vincent said the location in front of the racetrack was chosen first as it was along Highway 70 so thousands would be able to see the display driving into town and secondly for those thousands of visitors in the stands to recognize the community support of ENMU-Ruidoso.

Injury prevention through yoga

By Shiva Reinhardt As an adjunct to your physical practice of running, walking, biking, hiking, or other sport of choice, yoga excels at working out the kinks that accumulate over time from making the same motions over and over again.

When we use the same muscles, in the same way repeatedly it can lead to overuse injuries or strain.

I stretch after my workout. Isn’t that enough?

Usually a quick stretch is not enough to release tight muscles and bring breath and energy to them.

Taking five minutes to stretch after a workout is better than nothing, so

please keep doing it! What makes yoga different from your basic stretching is the focus and the breath awareness.

As athletes, you are asking your body time and again to ignore the aches and pains and keep going. In yoga, we do the opposite. We attend in exquisite detail to each little ache and pain, send our breath to those areas, consciously relax the tight spots and let go of the control we’ve been holding over our bodies for so long. Over time your body can lose sensitivity and awareness, from pushing through the pain for so long, that finally when the moment of injury comes, we push through even that and end up in a bad place.

Through yoga awareness of breathing into our bodies, we breathe life back into those places we ignored during that long run. And awareness is one element that allows our body’s own healing mechanisms to come forth. When you can actually feel the tight places that threaten to become injured, the nervous system and brain can take that knowledge of those painful places and adjust your movements or call for rest when needed which can keep you from becoming injured in the first place.
