Feature Hero wins All American Derby

By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com Leave it to the slowest qualifier to be the fastest in the final. Winning handsomely Another win for trainer Juan Gonzalez By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com A raucous, and record breaking crowd at Ruidoso Downs racetrack that celebrated the end of the yet another record breaking $2.6 million All American Futurity this Labor Day, when Handsome Jack Flash proved to be the best investment Norma and Brenda Alvarez ever made. The gelding – bred and owned by Debra Laney – became part of an entirely woman-owned partnership when the Alvarez’ decided to buy in for $20,000. Giving the horse over to trainer Juan Gonzalez was their

second great decision. All these choices fell into place Monday, when Handsome Jack Flash pulled away from the cavalry charge that had formed about 150 yards from the gate and won the big prize by a neck in front of more than 24,000 race fans. “It was my first All American ride and I was nervous before the race, but settled down once we got into the gates,” said Jockey Jaime Parga Leos. “My main concern was that he got away good and not like he did in the trials. Once he got the lead, he just kept giving me all he had.” See HANDSOME JACK FLASH, pg. B3

Getting a ‘MindUP’ for education

By Eugene Heathman Editor eugene@ruidosofreepress.com With New Mexico schools being ranked last or near last in the nation for overall quality, Governor Susana Martinez has been paying special attention to developing ways to bring up the quality of New Mexico education. During a visit to Ruidoso High School last week, Martinez announced that a new education reform initiative will pay 400 New Mexico teachers an additional $5,000 to work with students in struggling schools or to help students earn Advanced Placement (AP) credits. For the class of 2012, more than 4,800 students participated in AP courses, but just less than 2,500 successfully passed. Students who successfully complete AP courses and exams receive credit toward graduation and credit toward a college degree at almost any university in the United States. “Our teachers who take on the biggest chal-

lenges and deliver results for our students deserve to be rewarded,” Martinez said. “We need those teachers who are successful to share their practices in our struggling schools so that we can spread success across our state. We also want to help those AP teachers who are preparing our students for success at the next level and saving families money on tuition.” Little did the governor know that some added star power would be in Ruidoso to discuss the possibilities of introducing an innovative yet globally successful program to help lift New Mexico schools, particularly in rural areas for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade out of the doldrums: Goldie Hawn, an American actress, film director, producer and occasional singer. Known for her roles in television’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and films like Private Benjamin, Foul Play, Shampoo, Overboard, Bird on a Wire, Death Becomes Her, The First Wives Club; See GOLDIE HAWN, pg.
