Walking across America By Karen Boehler For the Ruidoso Free Press ALONG U.S. 380 – If you drove on Highway 70 from Hondo to Ruidoso last week, or anywhere along U.S. 380, you might have noticed a lanky, bearded man walking west along the side of those roads. Maybe you waved as you passed by, or stopped to see if he needed any help. Or maybe you were the person who hosted him for a night in Ruidoso, the motel operator who put him up in Carrizozo, or the restauranteur who served him a meal. If so, you got a glimpse of a nearly seven-year project that sees Dan Knabb walking across America. He’s not doing it for fame or glory. He’s not doing it to raise money for a cause. Asked, why he’s doing it, “I don’t really like to answer that question because people are looking for an easy an-

swer,” he said. “I guess the easiest way to put it is I just wanted an adventure.” He began his walk April 19, 2007, in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., and until December of that year, the 22-year-old slowly made his way toward California. A standup comedian by trade, he picked roads that went through cities that had comedy clubs, which took him along older highways, such as Routes 30 and 40, then – from St. Louis on – old Route 66. “Kind of all over the place,” he said. He financed the trip from money he’d saved, donations from parents and relatives and cash gifts along the way. But those first seven months were walked alone. Although he met people along the way, he was carrying See WALKING, pg. A3 RY! LUXU

Fox Cave embarks on dinosaur park By Erik LeDuc Reporter erik@ruidosofreepress.com Fox Cave is expanding yet again, this time moving forward on a purely recreational endeavor - a dinosaur park and system of walking trails anticipated to meander across about 50 acres behind the historic retail site. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” said Arnold Duke, owner of the business. “I think it will complete the cave project - we really want to put that cave on the map and make it a major attraction for people to come and see.” The cave is certainly more visible than it used to be, as workers wrestled the near-lifesized replicas into position alongside the highway, accompanying a buffalo statue and larger-than-life cowboy that have been in place for a time. The truck is the first among many more to come, and dinosaurs won’t be the only large cargo delivered, Duke added. “There are some trails there now, but they’re a little bit rough,” he said. “We’ve just purchased the largest backhoe we can buy, and we’ll be moving some earth.”
A trio of sculptors, scattered around the states, are working on many more models - some to scale, some full-sized - to be installed along the trails as work continues - workers should be starting on the major earthworks next week as the backhoe comes in, he said. When finished, it still won’t be the easiest trail - “we’ll make a better, cleaner and easier path to navigate through our land,” he said. “It may not be for everyone, but for those that are able to do it, I think it will be a great experience - kids are going to love it. Dinosaurs don’t go out of style.” Duke added that there will be several styles of animatronic dinosaurs as well - some will blink and sway its head, others will breathe and a few will walk - there’s even a riding model being constructed, he said. “They’ll have full movement and noise.” While there is no set date on the project’s completion, Duke invited visitors to stop by and check out the cave’s growing herd of saurians, as well as other activities and gifts in Fox Cave. “It may take a year to See FOX CAVE, pg.
