EMS conference an economic boost
By Sue Hutchison Reporter suehutch@valornet.com Firefighters, emergency medical personnel and nationally recognized presenters descended upon Ruidoso last week for the Region 3 Annual EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Convention. More than 1,200 participants registered to attend, according to Jim Stover, EMS coordinator for Lincoln County and Region 3 board member. In its 17th year, the conference attracts speakers, many of whom ask for the privilege of presenting information at the Ruidoso Conference. “Around 60 to 70 percent of EMS workers who attend also use their vacation time and bring their families,” says Stover, who notes that most EMS personnel

Training races for two-year-old Quarter Horses will be held May 7-9 at Ruidoso Downs after a very successful debut last year. The 300-yard training races begin each morning at 8:30 a.m. and post times will be 18 minutes apart. There will be a maximum of six horses in each race. The entry deadline for training races is 11 a.m. on May 3, with a $50 entry fee for each horse. A welcome barbeque for horsemen will be held at the chapel following the training races on May 9. The training races precede the trials to the $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity on opening day, May 25, of the summer season. The two-year-olds in the training races are also pointing to the $2.4 million All American Futurity on Labor Day. The All American Futurity is the world’s richest Quarter Horse race and boasts the largest purse for a two-year-old racehorse of any breed in North America.

idoso and we’re thankful for their wonderful support,” says Jan Elliott, Region 3 director. “They are so easy to work with and we’re always glad to come back to Ruidoso each year.” Elliott states that in 2010, more than 3.2 million in tourist dollars was injected into the local economy because of the conference. Firefighters learn extrication in the parking lot at the Ruidoso Convention Center, along with EMTs (Emergency Medical Technician) getting practice with skills presented by the newest techniques. Inside the convention center, dozens of booths showing the latest in technology along with cutting edge vehicles and flight systems are presented. Vendors enjoy coming to Region 3’s conferences. “It’s the biggest and most attended in all of New Mexico,” says Spencer W. Harris, executive territory manager for Laerdal Medical Corporation. “Region 3 takes good care of their vendors and offers the best exposure for our products.” Because of their stellar reputation and results, Region 3 has been asked to take charge of the statewide EMS Convention in Albuquerque in July. There are some who want to move the conference back to Clovis, but most agree that the Sacramento Mountains and Ruidoso offer the best location for the annual event, according to Elliot. Those who wish to offer opinions or learn more about the conference are encouraged to visit Region 3’s website: www.region3.org and contact the board of directors at the information listed.
