These people are the real heroes,” said Coleen Widell, Executive Director for HEAL. “Regardless of age, you too can be a hero,” encouraged Harvey Twite, Director of Programming and Operations for KEDU Radio, as he kicked off the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon. 2013 recipients were the BJH Mescalero Agency and Fire Team at Ski Apache, Carl and Lisa Bartley, Kristyn Arnold, Teambuilders, Harlan Vincent, Pete and Cheryl Blanchard, Brendan Gochenour, Dorylnn Simmons, Smokey Bear Hotshots, Godfrey Gomez, Dr. Stephen Rath, Perry Champion, and Corina Montoya. The teary-eyed audience was especially moved to celebrate the life of the late Champion. Our community was impacted by Champion through his morning show on KBUY Radio, fine dining at Mountain Annies and his general sense of hospitality. Champion always gave to others and expected nothing in return. “He was a man who inspired us to do, give, and love more, and to have fun doing it,” Harold Oakes, award presenter, said. Aging infrastructure and disaster cleanup projects continue for village By Sue Hutchison Reporter suehutch@valornet.com Presenting more than 10 projects to keep the village water running as smoothly as he can, Randall Camp, village utilities director delivered updates to council members last Tuesday. With aging infrastructure difficulties presenting themselves daily to utility staff, Camp says his staff does their best to stay on top of leaks. “If it isn’t broken, it isn’t ours,” he’s said when referring to the myriad problems both he and the utilities staff deal with regularly. Also on his plate are mitigation efforts from recent disasters: fires, floods and freezes. With both Grindstone and Alto dams needing attention, along with daily water leaks in the village waterways, the small utilities staff is busy round
the clock at times. Recent efforts to repair a water pipe held together by logging chains had water turned off for more than 10 hours, however Camp says they avoided a pending disaster by installing a new pressure release valve on 5th Street last Tuesday. “Always plan on being surprised when you dig in Ruidoso,” said Camp about his crew’s recent discoveries on 5th Street. Enduring 14 degree nighttime temps, the crew continued working until the job was finished and water flow was restored to residents and businesses. Although some citizens said they were not notified of the pending water outage, utility workers logged an account of door to door visits and made public service announcements available to alert neighbors. March Madness at the Roundhouse By Eugene Heathman Editor eugene@ruidosofreepress.com With just more than one week left in the 2013 legislation, the winds of March will be blowing through the roundhouse halls as legislators once again, scurry to tidy up more than 1,200 pieces of legislation that have been introduced during the 60-day session. Just 20 bills have passed both houses, with two bills making it to the desk of Governor Susana Martinez’s desk as of March 5, according to the Legislature’s official website. The ‘Feed Bill’ HB 1, sponsored by Rick Miera funds the first session of the 51st legislature. The second, SB195 sponsored by William Payne
designates the month of April is designated “Bataan-Corregidor heritage month.” The good news is that in the final days, the bulk of legislative work is accomplished, which involve long hours and marathon floor sessions. The lawmaking process from this point forward takes a very long time as many supporters of legislation to be heard on the Senate floor often wait hours, sometimes days. Committee hear-
