prepare for the evening of competition. Thursday evening, competing alongside 19 hopeful contestants, Bennatt won the swimsuit competion, Friday evening, her dance took first place for the talent portion. The final evening of competition narrowed the field down to 10 final contestants, with the competition beginning once again in swimsuit, evening gown and talent before a panel of seven judges. Behind the stage prior to curtain up, the contestants gathered in a circle where prayers were offered for the ailing Bennatt. Their prayers were answered with Bennatt being crowned 2012 Miss New Mexico. She will go on to compete with state finalists in hopes of becoming Miss America. Carol Henry, director of Miss New Mexico is a Cloudcroft resident and owns the Western Bar and Grill on Burro St. Pageant officials were concerned about the effect The Little Bear Fire would have on this year’s competition and had prepared to move the venue to Artesia if necessary. Host families there were lined up in a matter of hours, according to Henry. “I’m so happy we’ve found a place to hang our crown,” said Henry who was thankful for the efforts of firefighters who arrested the fire in time for the pageant to be held at the Spencer. She’s planning on making Ruidoso the annual destination for the competition, where hundreds of family members and friends will travel to participate. Kokopelli hosted a pre-pageant scholarship luncheon to raise funds for scholarship gifts to the contestants. “Kokopelli staff members bent over backward to make this first Sue Hutchison/Ruidoso Free Press annual event a success,” remarked Henry, who was grateful Miss Candice of Ruidoso Bennatt wins the Miss New Mexico crown on for those who attended to support the Miss New Mexico her own court at the Spencer Theater Saturday evening. Sanchez: Federal mismanagement needs to end By Todd Fuqua Reporter todd@ruidosofreepress.com With the county still recovering from the effects of the 44,000-plus acre Little Bear fire, Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez is adamant about his administration’s efforts to see that management of public lands does not allow such a catastrophe to occur again. “I can’t think of a more important place to be right now than Lincoln County,” said Sanchez, who was in the area to address the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association during its meeting at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. “I also can’t give enough thanks to those who were involved in fighting this fire. It’s going to be a long fire season.” Sanchez, making his comments on Monday’s “New Mexico In the Morning” radio program, stated the Federal government’s mismanagement of public lands and forests was the main contributor to the Little Bear disaster, as well as the Whitewater-Baldy fire near Silver City. He said similar fires will continue unless federal overreach is contained. “Come November, we’ll be looking for a change to bring common sense back to the management of our lands,” Sanchez said. “The drought will continue and we have to plan for the worst.” Sanchez emphasized ranchers and farmers were also affected by the fire, especially those who now have no lands on which to graze their cattle. “I don’t think people really realize where their food comes from, and they take for granted that we have a secure food sup-
ply,” Sanchez said. “These fires may have spared the herd, but now their food source is gone. This is unfortunate that this has happened in New Mexico, where we have a long tradition of cattle growing.” The Little Bear fire made national headlines, which is why Sanchez has also committed to promoting the Ruidoso area as a viable tourist destination. “We want to remind tourists that this area is still open for business and we’re singing the praises of Lincoln County,” Sanchez said. “We’re working very hard to promote southern New Mexico as a great tourist destination.”
