Billy the Kid escapes, yet again

By Eugene Heathman With contributions from the Lincoln County Historical Society Western frontier history calls it ‘the Great Escape.’ William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Courthouse during the famed New Mexico Territory’s Lincoln County War which launched the Kid into the national spotlight during the late 1870s. Not until until his dramatic escape from the courthouse in April 1881 did he secure his place near the top of all time outlaw notoriety. On April 13, 1881, in Mesilla, Billy had been convicted of the murder of Sheriff William Brady, one of the more notorious casualties of the Lincoln County War because he was law enforcement official. Billy was sentenced to hang. The execution was scheduled to occur in Lincoln on Friday, May 13, and seven guards had transported the prisoner there in the middle of April. The Kid was shackled hand and foot in addition to an around the clock guard. On Thursday, April 28, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett was collecting taxes in White Oaks and assigned deputies Bob Olinger and James W. Bell to guard Billy. The guards allegedly drew a ‘deadline’ in chalk across the middle of the room and in the event that Billy should step across it,

he would be shot. Between 5 and 6 p.m. on the 28th, Olinger took the five other prisoners across the street to Sam Wortley’s hotel for dinner. Billy remained in his room, with Bell keeping watch. The Kid purportedly asked Bell to take him to the outhouse behind the courthouse. The men went outside; Billy was still shackled in leg-irons and handcuffs. Once back in the building, Billy the Kid made his move. Bell had been shot and Billy the Kid was on the loose. Little Bear Fire pushing $80 million in total damages Eugene Heathman Editor eugene@ruidosofreepress.com The costs to suppress the Little Bear Fire, rehabilitate the burn area, and structure loss are mounting and expected to surpass $80 million. The price tag to suppress the actual fire stands at more than $19.4 million. Rehabilitation costs to mitigate flood hazards, straw placement, reseeding, road and other repairs following the fire are an estimated $8.7 million. The latest damage assessment toll of 254 structures destroyed is estimated at $50 million. Lincoln County Assessor Paul Baca has not yet determined the value of neither vacant private land damaged nor destroyed nor the personal property such as recreational vehicles and campers on private land.

The economic impact of lost GRT revenues, use permits and effects from the impact of potentially lost tourism revenues for the area have not been calculated. In addition to the current estimated $79 million price tag, the cost to completely rehabilitate Bonito Lake to a point of being able to resume the supply of water and the total cost to the City Alamogordo to tap into other sources of water are unable to estimate at this time. Alamogordo Mayor Susie Galea made a grim announcement regarding the after fire effects on Bonito Lake. “The damage to beautiful Bonito Lake is evident. Rainfall in the burned area around Bonito Lake deposited more than 35 feet of silt which is already causing problems,” Galea said. Galea further explained that Alamogordo NEW!

is at about 77 percent of capacity but Holloman AFB uses most of the water from the Bonito Pipeline which has been shut down. “We are going to have to go back on other water sources and old wells while we work with Holloman as it may be 10 years before water flows through the Bonito Pipeline again,” Galea said. Bonito Lake supplies Alamogordo 13 to 30 percent of the 6 million gallons of water each day. Additional heavy silt deposits during the next few years could prompt future dredging operations to return Bonito Lake to its natural bottom. On June 18, during a tour of the incident command center in Ruidoso, Gov. Susana Martinez announced the grim milestone of the Little Bear Fire breaking the state record of being the most destructive in state history.
