Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the September Edition of The Rugby Register We all know that reading is good for you and what better way to start your journey as a little one than reading The Rugby Register?! Here is little Freya enjoying the July edition - she clearly is showing remarkable taste! Thank you to her mum for sending in the picture on email - it’s so lovely to receive these kind of things. I hope Freya, along with the rest of our lovely readers enjoy this months edition too. Again we have some lovely new advertisers so do look out for them and their services along with our long standing wonderful businesses. So the children are almost due back at school as I write this and I can honestly say its been a great summer with them, as they are getting older (8,11 & 12) they are easier to entertain and we’ve had some great days & trips out as well as me juggling work and getting enough time with them. As we move into the new school term I’m now wondering how I will manage having 3 children at 3 different schools - can you imagine the paperwork?!

Treating people in Rugby for 30 years This summer Adam Sheridan, the founder, director and osteopath at The Rugby Osteopathic Centre celebrated his 30th anniversary as an osteopath. More celebration is coming in 2019 when the Centre turns 30! Adam and his wife Jo Sheridan, co-director and Osteopath, have developed The ROC into one of the largest multidisciplinary practices in the Midlands. The team consists of five Osteopaths and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, and is complemented by a Podiatrist, Audiologist, Counsellors and a Homeopath. Furthermore, the team works closely with rehabilitation specialists; pilates, yoga and personal training experts, to get the best possible treatment for the patient and enabling the quickest recovery and preventing the problem recurring. In August this year a qualified, experienced & Registered Podiatrist joined the team, and in September a strength & conditioning coach will be joining, expanding the health & well-being treatments available at the practice. At the ROC we have a professional yet friendly and personal approach, and we merit a high satisfaction amongst our patients. We have a Loyalty Card scheme, as well as Recommend us to a Friend scheme rewarding discounts. Our Osteopaths are available for advice over the phone, we write GP letters and formulate tailormade exercises, with no extra cost to our patients. Furthermore, in most cases (>99%), the treatment is included in the first appointment. Call 01788 560646 to book your initial appointment 69 Albert Street, Rugby CV 21 2SN www.rugbyosteopaths.co.uk

The Safety - you can be sure you are in safe hands with us: • •

Osteopathy is recognised and recommended by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment option for lower back pain, also with sciatica. Osteopathy is regulated by The General Osteopathic Council, and by law all practicing osteopaths need to be registered with them.

Osteopathy is a therapy which helps to detect, treat and prevent a wide range of medical conditions. The principle is that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. Osteopaths are highly competent and qualified, problem solving health care professionals recognised by the NHS to diagnose and practice independently. • Back, neck or hip ache

• Headaches

• Muscle or joint pain

• Osteopathy in pregnancy and after birth

• Sports injuries • Osteoarthritis • Sciatica

• Cranial Osteopathy • Osteopathy for children

Treatment is included from your first appointment, if appropriate.

HOME SUPPORT SERVICE • Help with everyday tasks around the home • Providing short breaks for carers

Home Help

Carers Short Breaks

If everyday tasks around the home become difficult, short or long term, we are here to help with: Housework, meal preparation, washing up, laundry, ironing, prescription collection, shopping, lawn mowing, weeding, assistance with correspondence and even walking the dog.

Offers carers the opportunity to attend to personal matters, recharge batteries and meet friends.

We may also be able to help with other similar tasks not involving personal care or medication.

The service provides a support worker to stay with the person you care for, in their own home, for an hour or so. All our support workers are DBS checked and, to build familiarity and trust, continuity is maintained wherever possible.

Ashlawn Road Water Tower Do you like the image on the front cover this month? The very talented Jamie Gray of Jamie Gray Photography took a number of images for me of various ‘Rugby Town’ iconic buildings and this is one I love. Easily recognisable when you go along Ashlawn Road and looking great here in the early evening sun. Built in the 1930’s as a replacement for the old Barby Water Tower it is operated by Severn Trent Water and serves us with pressurised water. Some may remember it as a sandy brown colour originally before it was re-rendered in the early 1980’s to the greyish white we see now. Look out over the coming months for other local buildings & images we have coming up!

Spring Bulbs: Now is a good time to start planting

rif Sca

ic a ti o n

your spring bulbs – the ground will still be nice and warm from the summer months and it gives plenty of time for the new roots to bed in before the spring sunshine arrive - daffodils, crocus and hyacinths, preferably by the end of September. As a rule of thumb most bulbs should be planted at 3 times their depth.

Scarification: Scarifying basically means raking dead and congested material from the level where the turf grows, This effectively pulls out congested material from the soil level like a fine tooth comb along a scalp allowing the space to breathe and regenerate at a crucial area for turf where the plants grow. But note this is not necessarily an annual task. Check first to see how congested your lawn is and whether it is suffering from an accumulation of moss or dampness. Any raked material can be added to the compost bin, spreading thinly so as not to create a wet blob. Scarification is best done in early autumn to give the grass a chance to recover before any frosts. September and early October are ideal.

W ildflo w er See

Wildflower Seeding: The simple approach to Wildflower seeding. You need to

din g

make sure that the a clear and even seed bed is created before sowing. Ideally you would remove what is growing there already and also encourage the existing seed bank to germinate. Then remove that as well before sowing. Wildflower are slow to establish and do not like much competition early on so the more you reduce the competition before sowing the better chance of success. Sow a grass and wildflower seed mix at 4 grams to the sq metre. A 100% wildflower seed mix at 1.5 gram. Sow August to early October ready for flowering next year.

Rugby resident celebrates 100th birthday Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter

A resident at Anya Court Care Home in Rugby recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends. Joan Ridgway spent her special day with her children Joy and Graham, her 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and later celebrated with other well-wishers at the home. Joan was born on 18th August 1918 in Rugby. She worked in the toy shop her dad owned on Sheep Street until she met her late husband Don Ridgway at church. The couple married in 1939 and went on to have three children. Joan received a letter from the Queen congratulating her on her milestone and celebrated her birthday with a family party at her daughter’s house. For the occasion her daughter in law and grandchildren travelled from Australia and Canada to be with her. A separate celebration was also arranged for Joan at Anya Court. Joan, 100 said: “I had a great day, I felt like I was going to burst with all the attention I received on my birthday. “My secret to longevity is to live life as God meant you too and my words of wisdom are to never bear a grudge!” Customer Relationship Manager at Anya Court, Karen Handley said: “Joan was our first resident at Anya Court Care Home and she is much-loved by all of us here. I am so pleased to hear that she had a great day, as she thoroughly deserves it.”

lack of circulation at the site of the injury and this dictates the type of manipulative procedure. Chiropractic and osteopathy have similar backgrounds and some techniques used are almost identical. Both disciplines are conducted by highly qualified professionals and the treatments offered have proved very beneficial for many people. Always remember the importance of good nutrition for your overall health. A healthy diet can help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation and raising levels of serotonins. Include bright coloured vegetables and fruit, oatmeal, seeds and oily fish.

often low in men who have sexual dysfunction. Pumpkin seeds and pine nuts also provide a rich supply of zinc and oats have proteins and minerals

needed to produce healthy seminal fluids. Also beneficial are foods which contain ginger and cayenne pepper, these are warming herbs which increase circulation to the genitals. Essential fatty acids are also important to men’s sexual health; fats are the material from which the body produces hormones. The best sources are oily fish, sesame seeds, almonds, spinach, and watercress. I always recommend an Omega 3 supplement which benefits the whole body. I would also recommend Korean Ginseng which is a powerful stimulant which can work taken prior to lovemaking, or you could try a supplement which I also recommend which is a Ginseng and Saw Palmetto combination and also contains zinc, chromium, iron, magnesium and other herbs known to boost male energy levels. Email me for more information. Loss of libido in women is often very different because sex for women is much more related to the mind than the body. As women age and oestrogen levels drop this can also affect their libido. Virginal dryness can be an issue and can make intercourse very painful. Replens is a good product which improves the condition of the vagina and also a product called Silk which provides the lubrication which has been lost during menopause. Both of these products can be purchased at most chemists. Another problem is saying no to sexual advances with your partner which can result in him feeling rejected and may ultimately cause him to exhibit symptoms of sexual dysfunction. Women want to be wooed whether they are 19 or 90 which will without doubt improve their libido - sorry chaps in the bedroom it is generally up to you to get things moving in the right direction so start looking after your health today! Recipes From Three Bistro G r e e k S a la d Greek Salad Now I’m not saying you have to have visited the country to cook it’s food but having the scantest of knowledge of the country should be a prerequisite if you are going to pass off your experience of the place or cuisine as ‘authentic’ or ‘traditional’. ‘Pray tell me of what you speak’ I can hear you ask, that is of course if I could hear you, which I can’t, so I hope you permit me the presumption even though you may in fact be just asking ‘what is the point’ of this and perhaps your own existence or on a deeper level, this recipe which requires no actual ‘cooking’. I once worked in an establishment that defined what they did as ‘fine dining’ yet the chef had no real idea of what the traditional Greek salad on the menu should contain as she had never been to Greece or even tasted a Greek salad. One day when she couldn’t find any green herbs that normally went on it she reached for the coriander. Now I’m not going to get all holier than thou here as I always encourage people to push the boundaries but if you call something a ‘traditional’ whatever then it should bear a slight resemblance to the thing you are trying to emulate. As far as I have seen, coriander has never been an ingredient in any Greek salad I have ever tasted however ‘traditional’ or outlandish, I’ve never ordered one in India so maybe it is common place there but I doubt it. Although this may be simple, so many people get this wrong, either by the size of the onions or lack of herbs and olive oil. During the recent hot weather this has been far and away our most popular salad, maybe as the sun reminded them of their first Greek salad, day on a boat or Greek waiter! The Ingredients Tomatoes: Flagrant, juicy and bouncy cherry tomatoes Oregano: Dried. They need not necessarily be hand picked by an Austrian children’s entertainer working in Portugal like mine! Cucumber: Preferably EU sanctioned and organic Red onion: Purple balls of juicy goodness, the more they make you cry the better Feta: The Greek variety as this is a Greek salad! Olive oil: Of good quality if possible as you will be drinking a good amount of it Olives: Black pitted, or un-pitted whole olives if you prefer The Method Peel and slice a quarter of a good sized onion into thin strips and then cut these in half. Scatter in a wide bowl and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle on some oregano then leave to soak. Next chop the cherry tomatoes in half or thirds and place in a bowl with a little salt and toss. Skin and cut the cucumber into large but swallowable chunks and add them to the onions. Add the tomatoes to these and top with the olives. Break a good amount of feta over the top and drizzle with copious amounts of olive oil and dust with oregano. Then serve, preferably with some Bouzouki music in the background and a chilled glass of wine or just enjoy it at ‘three’!

The House With A Clock In Its Walls: Release Date: 28 September 2018 The Plot: Release date: In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-yearold Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town’s sleepy facade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead. Based on the beloved children’s classic written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is directed by master frightener Eli Roth and written by Eric Kripke (creator of TV’s Supernatural). Co-starring Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic, it is produced by Mythology Entertainment’s Brad Fischer (Shutter Island) and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), as well as Kripke.
