Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the September Edition of The Rugby Register Well where did that go? I blinked and August came & went! We did manage a holiday in Brighton & Poole which was lovely but I’ve no idea where the rest of the month disappeared to! We are getting closer to Mine & Catherine’s Shine Night Walk challenge on 23rd September. Its a walking marathon using the same route as the London Running Marathon but this is through the night and no doubt that will bring its own challenges. We are up to 10 miles in training but we really need to ramp that up in the next week or so. It’s both time consuming and challenging - but then I only have to think of who and why I’m doing it and that spurs me on. Our group of walkers are doing amazing and all have their reasons for walking - for me its for our dear friend Lisa, who is living with incurable cancer, and doing the walk herself (!), for my childhood friend up in Derbyshire who has just completed her treatment for breast cancer and for a lovely, if not slightly bonkers, customer of ours who has advertised for many years with me and is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer too. My 8/9/10 hour walk through the night is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still going through. I’m doing it for them. If anyone would like to sponsor mine and Catherine’s efforts the links are below or we have

a paper sponsor form in the Office that we can write it on. Every penny goes to Cancer Research and would be greatly welcomed. Thank you. https://fundraise. cancerresearchuk.org/page/ annes-fundraising-page-709

Meet an Osteopath at our Open Evening 21st September • • • •

Do you know what osteopathy is and what it can treat? Did you know that according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) analysis musculoskeletal problems - including back pain, neck and upper limb problems – were the second most common reason (22%) for sickness absence in the UK labour market in 2016, at 30.8 million days? Did you know that there is good evidence that osteopathy is effective in treating persistent lower back pain and that The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends it as a treatment for this condition? We work with local companies assisting their employees to prevent conditions, to recover sooner and to stay healthy

What is Osteopathy? The philosophy of osteopathy is that all of the bodies systems are interdependent. By taking into account how the systems interact we can optimise the chances of recovery and good health. Osteopathy assesses, diagnoses, treats and prevents a wide range of health problems, and it is most commonly known for treating back pain and postural problems. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages. We work closely with other specialist rehabilitating therapists, specifically Pilates, Yoga and Sports Therapists, and we have a Physiotherapist and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in our team, under the same roof. Read testimonials on our website www.rugbyosteopaths.co.uk how we have helped our patients to recover and stay well.

Come and meet us at our Open Evening at our practice on Thursday 21st Sep @18.30 to find out more, or to discuss any condition you are experiencing. We offer healthy refreshments and you can book a FREE 10-minute session (no treatment) with an osteopath. If you need assistance earlier please contact us - our helpful team is here for you.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Anyone for Cards?.... Do you enjoy crosswords, puzzles, card games? How about a pastime that you can share with likeminded people and keep your brain in good trim all for less than the price of a cinema ticket, a round of drinks even the simplest lunch out? Many people have played whist, or Rubber Bridge at home or in informal groups. This is great fun and is an excellent grounding for the multi-layered game of duplicate bridge. Duplicate bridge is played by at least eight players, sitting four to a table. The cards played at one table are preserved and transferred to a second table, and perhaps on to many more tables after that. The results for the hand are scored and recorded. To win, players must get the very best out of each hand they play. The physical activity is limited to sorting and counting the cards, moving from table to table and the occasional greeting and chat with people at the each. However, success requires learning technique, agreeing tactics, assessing the situation and gauging the approach of your opponents. Skill, practice, constant learning and good team work bring good results. Is bridge a sport? A fierce debate, and legal action, has been taking place over the last year. It matters to the image of the sport, and it probably matters more in applications for financial support to various bodies. Sport England has maintained, in court, that bridge is not a sport. However, the EU VAT authority has ruled that bridge is a sport. You may be quite content with doing your best and enjoying the company of the friends you can make at lessons or practice at a well-run club. Your club may offer keenly competed pairs or teams sessions. You may want to represent the club in competitions against other clubs, getting to see how bridge is played all over the three neighbouring counties, the nation, on cruise ships and holidays or senior tournaments all over the world. Beginners’ courses, and lessons for improvers or experienced players often start in the Autumn. Think about refreshing and adding to skills you already have, finding new friends, and enjoying a new challenge at a very reasonable cost. There are many opportunities in the Rugby area to learn and play. Look for a friendly club, with a pleasant environment, well run sessions and experienced, properly qualified teachers and coaches. See you at the table! Nicky Bainbridge, Rugby Village Bridge www.rugbyvillagebridge.co.uk

Recipes From Three Bistro All this talk of Brexit has made me nostalgic about my time in France and think about things European. Will we have to rename ‘French’ fries and what will happen to the price of Champagne & Foie gras?! On a serious note, will it be harder to bring in illegal workers…although thinking about it, shockingly my sous chef and right hand man, Zippy (a woman), is here legally! So many questions and only a page to cover them with a recipe. So to business… One of my favourite ‘Frenchish’ meals in France was a supreme of chicken wrapped in proscuitto (I know it’s not French) with seared potato discs and green beans with a Veloute. When done right this can be packed with flavour and is akin to being French kissed by a tall slender Parisian with chicken breath! I love this dish because it involves relatively no chopping which is good if you don’t have your ‘help’ handy.

The Ingredients The Meat: A supreme of chicken from a reputable butcher, a disreputable one may lead to poisoning and an overall lack of quality in the finished dish Garlic and herbs de Provence: Call me old fashioned but this adds a little garlic and herbs to the dish! Fine beans & carrots: The thinner the better, solely for aesthetic reasons Chicken or Veal stock: Preferably one you know and it should be a white stock Plain flour: From a local Mill run by a man called Allen if possible! Butter: It doesn’t have to be from a cow in Jersey as the Isle of Man will do Proscuitto: Prosciutto crudo and not Prosciutto cotto. If you can get some from the Emilia-Romagna region then you go to the head of the class Potatoes: I like Charlottes but you can use Jerseys if you prefer, I’ve already mentioned them once so I don’t want it to look like I work for the tourist board The Method Get the breasts out and season well adding the garlic and herbs to both sides. Sear both sides in a frying pan using rape seed oil if possible and remove to a baking tray. Searing the breasts locks in moisture which would otherwise escape during roasting. Wrap the breast in the proscuitto and place in the middle shelf of an oven at about 160-170 degrees. We want to brown the skin but not dry out the chicken or burn the proscuitto. Keep the pan with the remaining juices from the chicken and add some water to Blanche the vegetables. You can now turn your attention to the Veloute. Boil and simmer the stock in a saucepan. In another pan melt some butter on a low heat. Once this has melted add the flour and stir vigorously so there are no lumps. Bring this off the heat and allow to cool slightly before adding the stock and whisking as well as you can without showering the worktop and hob in the sauce. Bring to the boil and simmer till it gets to a ‘velvety’ consistency. Next cut the potatoes into discs and boil with salt and a drop of oil. Place the vegetables in the frying pan with the water and chicken oils and cook till they still have some bite then place them into a bowl of cold or ice water. When the chicken is cooked through, you can check with a skewer by making sure the juices run clear or you can just tell if you’re professional with years of experience like me! Take the breasts out and allow to rest covering them with foil. Take a frying pan and sear the potatoes in rape seed oil. Once these are golden remove to a plate and throw in the vegetables. Simply sear these till hot and plate next to the potatoes. Place the breast on top of the veg and spoon on the Veloute where you like. Enjoy with a dry white wine and a cigar for afters! This is just one dish of many that will be making an appearance at our ‘Friday Supper club’ soon.

Increase Your Plant Stock • •

Trim Hedges & Box Topiary •

Trim-topiary in autumn to give it a good shape over winter. Use secateurs to cut off excess green growth Give hedges and evergreens a final trim in September to keep them looking tidy through the winter. Make sure the cutting blades are sharp when you prune box hedge or topiary or the leaf edges will bruise. This means that after a few days the plant will turn brown. Prune laurel hedges with secateurs to avoid damaging the remaining leaves which would be cut through with shears or hedge cutters.

Divide perennials Summer-flowering herbaceous perennials can be lifted and divided this month. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years, as the plants get too big for the space and become congested. Dividing them will also increase your plant stock at no extra cost. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two sections, working from the crown outwards. A good trick is to push two garden forks in back to back, and pull the handles together to split the plant. Here’s some extra advice on dividing perennials if you need it. Shake off any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible, remembering to water frequently as it gets established.

Plant Trees & Shrubs •

If you’ve been planning on planting a new tree in your garden, plan out which shrubs and trees you would like now. If you can get them planted in September, this will help them to get their roots established, so they can grow vigorously come next spring. A mulch of well-rotted homemade compost in spring and your trees and shrubs should get off to a good start.

how to teach your children to eat healthily.... Children are such a blessing in our lives but also a huge responsibility. As I am writing this article it’s the long summer holidays which are lovely but also exhausting at times! One of the major concerns parents talk to me about is how to encourage children to eat a healthy diet and how to avoid the problems of weight gain and indeed obesity. The statistics are looking bleak, more than 1 in 5 children are overweight or obese when they start school and almost 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school. Research also suggests that these children will be overweight and obese adults with all the associated serious health implications of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Encouraging children to make the right food choices can be challenging. Remember breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the body needs protein in the morning. Breakfast can be a time of tension, tempers flare and food is forgotten. To negate this problem plan ahead. Ask your family what they would like for breakfast; agree a new regime and make it fun, get them involved in the preparation if possible. Most important make it a rule that they do not leave home without breakfast. As parents you should be good role models so make sure you are eating properly too. If you are concerned about your child’s weight then stop buying those sweet sugary cereals and encourage them to eat the more healthy varieties. Make your own muesli; include pine nuts and chopped walnuts and almonds for protein, with dried fruit and coconut for sweetness or buy fortified cereals or make porridge. Use semi-skimmed milk if your youngster is showing signs of being over weight but they do need plenty of calcium, good sources are cheese, yogurt, broccoli, almonds and brazil nuts, and blackstrap molasses which can be used as a healthy sweetener. Eggs are a good source of protein and scrambled eggs don’t take long. It worth getting up a little earlier to ensure you all get a good start to your day. If your child is overweight then this is going to make their lives more difficult not just from a health point of view but because they will have their own concerns about how they look and feel. If you are really worried and unsure of what to do, then I recommend that you visit your doctor who will give you specific advice for your child. There is no quick solution but there are positive steps and changes you can make that will help.

ditch all processed food and please cook for your family. Provide that magic ingredient love which makes for a healthier meal. Stop buying fizzy drinks, crisps, biscuits, cakes and sweets, they are all just loaded with sugar, seriously contributing to weight problems, and are unhealthy. You will find sugar-free, low fat treats in health food stores or make your own treats by substituting fruit juice and honey for the refined sugar in recipes. Try small amounts of dried fruits, raisins, apple rings or apricots. Encourage your child to eat raw vegetables, carrots, red and yellow peppers and cucumber; it will help if you get them involved in the preparation of healthy meals. It is essential, particularly if your child is overweight, that they get daily physical activity. You should set limits on the amount of time your children spend watching TV, videos, and playing computer games. Good luck with this one! It really is most important to encourage them to have plenty of physical exercise like walking, swimming or cycling.

Children learn a lot by example so as a parent it is vital that you teach your children about how to eat O healthily. Provide good protein found in lean meat, O chicken, turkey, fish and pulses and plenty of fresh his vegetables and fruit. Lots of variety in the meals also you cook makes them more interesting and less of th likely to be rejected. Also control portion sizes, even The p a growing child does not need the same amount of o f me c food that you eat. ligam en m We are all addicted to sugar and I blame food echa n manufacturers who hide sugar in many products, nervou s so read food labels. There is about one teaspoon The pri mani ma of sugar in every tablespoon of tomato ketchup pula c and eight teaspoons in a fizzy drink! Refined sugaromplai ti range nt a makes us fat and is not healthy so of m i o s please stop buying foods that are bad for you and your children. Live with joy and health.
