Editors Letter...

Hi everyone and welcome to the November Edition of The Rugby Register So I sit here typing this in quite a lot of pain from running in the Great South Run last weekend whilst already injured - crazy I know and a lesson learned. However, being away in Portsmouth with over 30 fellow runners from the Ladies Running Group (Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club) was a great weekend, all having fun, supporting & encouraging each other. Then on the coach on the way back into Rugby we were diverted as there had been an accident on the Gyratory and as we passed Rugby School the Air Ambulance was on the field and a fellow runner, the lovely Fiona turned and said “Now I’m really pleased I ran the 10 miles and raised £350 for Air Ambulance” How amazing? It really brought home to me what a wonderful service the Air Ambulance provides and how vital sponsorship is to keep them flying.

Take a look at this fantastic picture (opposite) sent in by mum of Zara (8) and Holly (2) getting active with our “Move your body” feature from last month. I hope the articles each month by our resident Health & Fitness expert Elizabeth has inspired many of you to follow her advice. If 8 year old Zara and 2 year old Holly can do it - we all can!

We have a busy time ahead - The Rugby Hall of Fame is due to open in November, the Christmas Light Switch On is on Sunday 20th November with Union J (X-Factor) as special guests along with lots of other entertainment, all starting at 12 noon and we have 2 pages of Charity & Fundraising events coming up too - take a look towards the back of

the magazine for the details as there’s sure to be something to suit everyone.

Just For The Record…..

For many people this new shop will be the most exciting thing to appear in Rugby for years…

Vinyl records, the format that many people thought had died with the drive of downloading and digital music is now at a 30 year high, and one local woman, Sally Wolanski, is flying the flag right in the centre of town.

In the upstairs of Hunts Bookshop right in the centre of town Sally has set alive her passion for Vinyl, which she herself has been collecting for over 30 years, and created the first vinyl record shop in Rugby for many years – the last real record shop in Rugby, Berwick’s, closed in the 1990’s Sally owns over 6,500 records and the shop will start by selling some of her own records alongside a huge range of other second hand titles to enthusiasts as well as people keen to experience the unique sound of vinyl – maybe for the first time.

There is nothing like hearing your favourite band or musician on a format that many regard as the perfect way to listen to music. Yes there maybe the odd crackle and background hiss, but, and it’s a big BUT the warmth, depth and sincerity with which you hear your the music just has to be experienced.

And it’s not just the clarity of sound and instruments you get with vinyl, many see it that you are buying a piece of art, both musically and physically. The record sleeve, the artwork, the sleeve notes – in many cases they can be a thing of beauty and intrigue. Iconic images from the past are festooned with vinyl covers, owning them is like having your own art collection.

Sally has a huge selection of genres for many tastes, rock, pop, disco, punk, folk, country, jazz and across the ages from 50’s right through to 90’s. A visit to the shop is vital even for those non- vinyl enthusiasts – there is sure to be a hidden gem of an album you have either forgotten about or have always wanted a copy of waiting there in Sally’s vast collection.

Sally Wolanski The store has already had amazing feedback in the town with lots of people dropping in to re-energize their vinyl collections, dust off their players and dig out their original collections and then adding to them with Sally’s fabulous range of titles. Constantly buying and selling such a wide selection Sally’s knowledge of music in general is amazing and her passion for vinyl is clear. It is great to have someone this passionate in Rugby.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks.

Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible.

What is a Credit Union?...

Rugby Credit Union was12 established in 2004 and CV21 is part2RS of the Albert Street, Rugby, town’s expanding voluntary sector. The move fulfils an ambition to www.rugbycreditunion.co.uk locate to a more prominent position, being near to the main post office and close to the town centre.

Although Credit Unions began in the 19th century there was a rapid expansion in the 1980s.

They exist in over 100 countries, with 400 in the UK. They are not-for-profit savings and loans co-operatives, owned and controlled by their members who elect the board of directors.

Credit Unions exist primarily to help the financially disadvantaged by encouraging them to save, while offering low cost loans as an alternative to doorstep lenders, payday loans and illegal loan sharks who charge extortionate rates of interest. Credit Unions are regarded as responsible lenders, since loans are based on a member’s ability to repay the loan.

In the UK Credit Unions are regulated by the FCA, in the same way as banks and building societies. Interest rates on loans are capped by law, thus restricting the income necessary to run the Credit Union, consequently external grants are necessary in order to survive. Rugby Credit Union employs a part-time office manager working with a team of volunteers, utilising their skills and experience from a variety of backgrounds.

Apart from the core business of savings and loans other services include School Banks, a Green Loan scheme and a Christmas Savings scheme, with all savings protected by the Government’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Most members join at the local office, but members can also join through payroll deduction schemes at their place of work.

Anyone who lives or works in the Borough of Rugby is eligible to join and over the years close to 1,000 have chosen to do so.

Loans can only be funded by members’ savings and for that reason a proportion of adult members are regarded as altruistic savers, that is those who save to provide the funds to make lending possible. To date Rugby Credit Union has provided loans totalling around one million pounds, taking many from the clutches of doorstep lenders and enabling them to gain control of their finances.

up Method

Fry the cooking chorizo, chopped, in a large, dry pan until crisp. Remove and set aside, leaving the juices in the pan.

In the same pan, fry the cooked new potatoes, halved, until crisp and golden, adding a glug of oil if needed. Remove and set aside.

Add a little more oil if needed, then fry the mushrooms, sliced, with the rosemary until golden. Add the onion, sliced, and the garlic, crushed, then fry until lightly golden.

Return the potatoes and chorizo to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Add the juice of lemon, season and serve.

10 Mins Cooks In:15 mins Serves:4 Boil the potatoes for 10-12 minutes until tender then drain and transfer to a large bowl. Add the cabbage to the same pan and cover with boiling water and cook for 3 minutes.

Meanwhile mash the potato with the milk and season to taste. Drain the cabbage and stir into the potato.

Fry the bacon in a non-stick pan for 4-5 minutes until browned and stir into the Colcannon. Finally add the cheese, if using.

Boil some water in a small pan and poach the eggs for 3-4 minutes or according to taste and serve on top of the Colcannon.

Don’t overlook the humble cauliflower. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the leeks, garlic and celery and sautÊ for 5 minutes. Add the cauliflower, cook for 2 minutes, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Remove the soup from the heat and allow it to cool a little. Add the cream. PurÊe the soup in batches with a hand-held blender. Season to taste with salt and ground black pepper. Gently reheat and serve hot, sprinkled with dukkah. Dukkah is a Middle Eastern spice mix. Make it by toasting the shelled pistachio nuts, sesame seeds, coriander seeds, and sea salt in a heated frying pan until fragrant. Grind until crumbly. Any leftover dukkah can be sealed in a screw-top jar. Bread is delicious dipped into olive oil and then into a dish of dukkah.

Meander of the Month...

Bradgate Country Park Distance 3.7 miles (6km) Minimum time 1hr 45min Getting there:- Sat Nav: LE6 0HE. By Road: The main car park is within a 10 minute drive of Junction 22 of the M1.

Follow the A50 (eastwards) to Markfield and turn left to Newtown Linford. Car Park is next to the village church.

Bradgate Country Park lies just to the north west of Leicester, and for many years it has been a popular place of escape for the city’s population. The spacious and diverse nature of the park’s 840 acres (340ha) make it a great family venue, offering easy surfaced tracks and open grassy tracts through to more adventurous hillside paths across the heath, bracken and rocky outcrops.

Although Bradgate Park was given over to public recreation in the 1930s, it continues to support a resident fallow and red deer population of around 300. In fact deer have been kept here since the 13th century, and since they’re no longer hunted they’ve become a bit less wary of human visitors, so that despite the private deer sanctuary south of the river you’ll probably be able to get some close-up views of the handsome creatures. Signs warn against feeding the animals, and it goes without saying that dogs must be kept under tight control when there are deer about.

1. Enter the grounds from the large car park at Newtown Linford and turn sharply left on a wide track. Go through an open gateway and, ignoring paths off to the right, stick on the main route uphill (there are in fact two parallel tracks), keeping the park’s boundary wall in sight on your left.

2. When you draw level with a large wooden swing gate in the wall, fork right. Go steadily uphill on a wide grassy ride through the banks of bracken, past a small plantation known as Tyburn, and soon you will see the prominent hilltop war memorial up ahead on your left. Follow the obvious grassy track all the way to the ‘summit’, then go round to the right of the walled plantation behind it to reach the folly known as Old John Tower. Although the centre of Leicester is only 6 miles (9.7km) away, the extensive views from this excellent viewpoint (695ft/212m) are predominantly rural, with large tracts of woodland scattered about.

3. Turn right, straight down the hillside, to a small circular pond in the bracken below. Take the left of three paths on the far side and continue on to reach a track around a walled plantation known as Sliding Stone Enclosure. Turn left and walk along this track for 100yds (91m).

4. Ignore the path straight down to the gate in the wall on your left , and instead go straight on. The grassy track gradually drops down to reach the park’s boundary wall and then continues downhill on a short tarmac strip past a small underground reservoir.

5. After 125yds (114m) take the track off to the right, by a wooden bench and, rather incongruously, two drainage covers. This long, straight grassy track heads across the middle of the country park and is easy to follow. It passes between Coppice Plantation and Dale Spinney, from where there are good views across Cropston Reservoir. Continue all the way down to the surfaced drive at the bottom and turn right to reach the visitor centre (open daily April to October, weekends November to March, closed December to February).

6. Continue along this easy, tarmac route past the ruins of the house and the restored chapel, then on alongside the pools and waterfalls of a small valley known as Little Matlock. Look out for the monkey puzzle tree and the cedar of Lebanon, introduced to the park in the 19th century. Continue all the way back to the car park at Newtown Linford.

In the early19th century in particular, there were many critics focused on discrediting the Bible. They picked on events, places and people that were only described in the Bible claiming the accounts were fable - the events never took place and the people and places never existed. A notable example of this was Babylon, its empire and emperors. It was alleged by the critics that there never was a city of Babylon, let alone an emperor called Nebuchadnezzar.
