“Campaigning against the Borough Council to protect our village” The Dunchurch Parish Council would like to update Parishioners with the latest timeline on the Rugby Borough Council’s (RBC)ADVERT Local Plan (Preferred Options) for Consultation.
The Parish Council rigorously opposed this plan – which could result in over 5000 houses being built in and around Dunchurch. We believe that the report from planners went before RBC Executive on 27th June and should be published on the RBC website early July. However, we understand that the report will not go out to consultation until September due to holidays etc. If you have not already done so, and believe that Dunchurch should maintain its village status we would encourage you to contact RBC and register your objection. 20 Fantastic Years of Youth Theatre Projects Fiddler on the Roof comes to Rugby Theatre as the 20th summer youth project. A classic musical with a story line of love and discrimination, that is as relevant today as when it first aired on Broadway in 1964! Everyone remembers Topol as Tevye, coping with his daughters rebelling against arranged marriages and the plight of the Jewish community in Russia. Over 90 students aged between 10-20 years have auditioned for this year’s project, many returning for another go, to seize the opportunity to be coached by a team of professionals with a wealth of West End and teaching experience. From the start of rehearsals to opening night in just 10 days, it is a massive challenge but allows the young people to see exactly what professional theatre can be like. This year sees the return of Ashley Nottingham to the project, this time as choreographer after playing the lead role in Half a Sixpence 15 years ago. Ashley has had many successes on the West End stage and with several tours. It is a great honour for Rugby that he has returned to choreograph this year’s project.

Packing Tips: If you want to arrive on holiday with a suitcase full of crease free clothes, then rolling them up is definitely the way forward. Another clever way is the ‘Burrito’. Have a look on the internet by searching ‘clothes packing burito’, there’s a couple of you tube video’s worth watching. You can roll & tuck a t-shirt into a tiny burrito and if you have children that are maybe going for a sleepover, on a school trip or cub camp for instance you could put a days clothes i.e, t-shirt, shorts, undies and socks all into a single burito and that way they don’t have to worry about what goes with what or where things are as it’s all in a neat little bundle. The biggest bonus of all is that they take up so little space. Method Prep:20min, Cook:6min, Ready in 26min In a blender or food processor, process the olive oil, sesame oil, lemon juice, onion, garlic, ginger, coriander, paprika, salt and pepper until smooth. Reserve a small amount for basting. Pour the remaining mixture into a dish, add prawns, and stir to coat. Cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours. Preheat barbecue for medium heat. Thread prawns onto skewers, piercing once near the tail and once near the head. Discard marinade. Lightly oil barbecue cooking grate. Barbecue prawns for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until opaque. Baste with reserved sauce while cooking.

Serves: 6 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 pumpkin, cubed salt 200g feta, crumbled 8 tablespoons pine nut kernels 500g baby spinach leaves

Prep:10min, Cook:20min, Ready in 30min In a large bowl, mix together the honey, sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce. Set aside a small dish of the marinade for basting. Place chicken drumsticks into the bowl. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Preheat barbecue for medium high heat. Lightly oil the barbecue cooking grate. Arrange drumsticks on the grate and cook for 10 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Baste frequently with the reserved sauce during the last 5 minutes.
Method Prep:10min, Cook: 40min, Ready in 50min Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Place pumpkin in a baking tray with the olive oil and toss to coat the pumpkin in oil. Sprinkle with salt. Place in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Every 5 minutes or so toss the pumpkin. After 20 minutes turn the oven to 220 C / Gas 7 to ensure the pumpkin is browned and slightly crispy. Approximately 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile wash and dry the baby spinach. Place the pine nuts in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Stir with a wooden spoon until pine nuts are golden (once golden remove to a ceramic dish so the pinenuts do not continue to cook and burn). Place baby spinach in a large salad bowl. Add feta and pine nuts. Once pumpkin is ready, add to salad bowl. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil to taste. This salad can be served immediately or left to cool.

Family Fun At Foxton Locks When we first started publishing the “Meander of the Month” Foxton Locks was the first ever walk. This is one of the favourites so we have decided to share once more. Foxton Locks is a fabulous family day out whatever the weather. The whole family will enjoy a fun-packed visit to Foxton Locks, situated within a few miles of Market Harborough. Surrounded by Leicestershire’s beautiful countryside, you will experience all that this unique waterways landmark has to offer – colourful narrowboats, the famous flight of 10 locks and the new BoilerHouse virtual experiences. Distance: 5 miles (8km) Minimum time: 2hrs 30min Paths: Canal tow path and open fields (mostly pasture), 12 stiles Landscape: Gently rolling farmland Parking: Foxton Locks Country Park (pay-anddisplay) and includes public toilets Sat Nav: LE16 7RA 1. At main car park, turn left out of the car park and along the signposted path parallel with the road to reach the canal. Go right, under the road bridge, then over the footbridge, in order to turn right on the far bank and along the tow path to Foxton Locks. Descend the lock staircase to the basin at the bottom.
aiming for the far edge of Gumley Wood. Follow the path closely around the side of the plantation until the second stile, beside a section of fence used as a horse jump. 5. From here strike out across a deeply undulating grassy field towards a stile below trees on the far side. If you want to visit the pub in the village of Gumley, go right before the stile for a short uphill path, otherwise aim half left through the next field. Go over the stile and directly out across more fields, separated by the farm drive, to return to the canal on the very far side. Cross the high, thin footbridge and turn right to return to the basin and locks. Walk back up beside the staircase, crossing over half-way up to visit the museum. 6. From the museum follow the popular path up along its side (don’t recross the main canal again) and on along a canal arm through some trees. Go over a lock and continue all the way back to the road bridge. Go under this and turn left to return to the car park. Although this is a long walk - Foxton Locks is worth visiting just for a short walk and a cuppa at the cafe.
2. Go ahead past the former lock-keepers’ cottages and switch banks via the high-arched brick footbridge (Rainbow Bridge). Walk out along the wide tow path beyond. Continue along this easy and peaceful route for 1¾ miles (2.8km), following the Grand Union Canal as it swings left beyond Debdale Wharf. Notice the large numbers of boats moored in the marina, some in preparation for repairs and renovation, while others are kept here permanently. There are lovely views over the open countryside towards Kibworth Beauchamp to the north. 3. At bridge No 68 go over the stile on the right to cross the metal footbridge via two more stiles. On the far side make your way up the left-hand edge of a wide, sloping field to pass Debdale Grange. Continue through the top field to reach the lane on the far side. 4. Turn right, along the road for ¼ mile (400m) then, approaching a road junction, go over the stile on the left for a signposted public footpath across the field,

Let’s talk FATs good and bad!... I recently read an article in the New Scientist, the controversy concerning dietary fats continues. My first reaction to the news that research conducted in the 1980s was flawed was that it was bad news for health professions who like me are working to encourage a healthy lifestyle with a focus on good nutrition. This publicity only adds to the confusion the general public feel about what they should and should not eat and I suspect turns people off even considering changing to a healthy diet. Personally I eat butter and even cook with it. I believe that the more natural the product the better. Important to remember though is that a knob of butter contains around 5g of fat and 90 calories so moderation is needed. Although new research is suggesting that fat even saturated fat is better for us than carbohydrates, namely sugar and starch. I hope the following will be interesting and help encourage you to make the right choice when it comes to fats.
Hydrogenation Hydrogenation changes liquid oils into solid spreadable, long shelf life products that may be harmful to the body. The process involves heating the oil to very high temperatures which changes the molecular structure and this change creates trans-fatty acids which are unnatural and unhealthy. My advice is to avoid any products which contain hydrogenated fat and the good news is that many supermarkets have now removed hydrogenated fat from foods.
Frying Research indicates that fried fats can cause cancer and hardening of the arteries. This cooking method changes the chemistry of the oil molecules and interferes with our cells’ healthy function. Keep frying to a minimum.
Refining and Deodorising These processes produce oils that are completely devoid of any nutritional goodness. Most of the oils that line supermarket shelves have been subjected to harsh processes which include: cleaning with phosphoric acid, bleaching, and heating to above frying temperatures to remove the peroxides produced by bleaching. All these create toxic chemicals which the body has to eliminate.
Saturated Fats – are found primarily in foods from animals including beef, lamb, pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other dairy products made from whole milk. They are also found in some plant foods: coconut oil, palm oil and cocoa butter. More research is being conducted to establish whether these fats are as bad for us as was once reported.
Polyunsaturated fats - these are the unsaturated fats found primarily in oils from plants and include sesame and safflower seeds, corn and soybeans, many nuts and seeds and their oils. Monounsaturated fats – these are also from plants and include canola, olive and peanut oils, and avocados. All these fats are beneficial for health and can help lower high cholesterol levels so use these oils instead of the saturated and hydrogenated fats. I highly recommend cooking and using good quality olive oil but do not overheat. Fats that heal include the Essential fatty acids which reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, allergies, arthritis, eczema, depression, fatigue, poor brain development in children and more. These fats are the alpha-linolenic acid (Omega 3) and linoleic acid (Omega 6). Omega 6 is only found in the seeds and oils of the following: hemp, pumpkin, sunflower, safflower, sesame, corn, walnut, soybean and wheat germ oil. Omega 3 can be found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herrings. I attended a conference at Loughborough University and the benefits of taking an Omega 3 Supplement were expounded at almost every lecture. Research indicates that Omega 3 can improve cardiovascular function, improve brain function and is good for our joints. Live with joy and health. The preaching of the Apostle Paul Paul of Tarsus, the 13th apostle was different to the other apostles in many ways and the Bible gives us much information about the sort of man he was and his life of working for God and the Lord Jesus Christ. His background and early life was far different from the other twelve apostles. He was highly-educated, belonged to the strictest sect of the Jewish religion and moreover a Roman citizen. A far cry from the simple fishermen of Galilee. The way in which he became a disciple of Jesus was different too. Jesus called Peter, James, John and their companions to leave their nets and follow him - and they did at once. Whereas Paul was a most zealous persecutor of Christians and was converted through a vision experienced whilst he was yet on the road to persecute even more Christians. The twelve preached almost exclusively in the land of Israel to fellow Jews, but Paul, once he was converted, channelled all his enthusiasm and energy into preaching to the Gentiles and was directed by Jesus to travel around the Roman world to present the gospel to them and help them to establish churches or ecclesias in their respective cities. Over several years he travelled making 3 separate tours, enduring considerable hardship. He visited cities with a range of cultures and accordingly he varied his approach and content, though the message of salvation was the same. As Paul himself wrote “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” He preached to the learned philosophers of Athens, in the Roman colony in Greek Philippi and in Syrian Antioch and in his last days as a free man he preached to the Jews in Jerusalem.
So Paul led a very different life from the 12 apostles. But was the gospel that he preached different from theirs? Or is it different to what we understand as the gospel? That is the question that the coming series of seminars will examine.
