What’s behind the doors of Hamilton House....

Dr Hoskyn was an Orthopaedic Surgeon and opened up The Hoskyn Centre 1952. A place where patients could rehabilitate following on from all types of orthopaedic surgery as there was nothing else offering such a service in Rugby & surrounding areas at that time.

The Hoskyn Centre was initially a shed within the grounds of St Cross hospital and later moved to Hamilton House on Bilton Road where it remains today. A wonderful listed building with many rooms and still operating as a Day Centre, Hamilton House is a real asset to the town of Rugby.

Over the years the service provided has moved on from rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery, then to a day centre taking in adults & children with physical and mental challenges to what it offers today; a day centre for adults who may be suffering from illnesses such as MS, Parkinsons, Strokes, Amputees, and even just loneliness. Referrals to the centre come through a range of mediums, some of which come through Connect Well. ConnectWELL is a way to improve your life your way, by linking an individual to a range of non-medical community activities and organisations to help improve health and well-being, such as: advice and information services, community groups, leisure activities, lunch clubs, self-help groups, specialist interest groups, sporting activities, and lots lots more. The free service is available for anybody over 18 in the Rugby Borough. It is delivered by Warwickshire CAVA. www.wcava.org.uk/connectwell The Hoskyn day centre is open 3 days a week and offers hot freshly prepared meals, companionship, games, puzzles, chatter, laughter, keep fit (Wednesdays), small trips, visits from local schools to do carols etc, games & supper evenings and other social events. On the day I visited there were a number of visitors attending all chatting, playing dominoes, some reading but all seemed so grateful for the company and social interaction.

The Hoskyn Centre receives no funding and costs £60,000 per year to run. The centre manager, Irene has been there for 23 years and is passionate about offering a warm, welcoming, day centre to those who need it.

For just a small fee adults can attend the centre, get a hot meal, have the social interaction that we all need & love and transport can be arranged too for those who aren’t able to make their own way in.

The building itself, Hamilton House, has a number of rooms, a few of which are available for hire to the general public. A number of groups already hire the main room for their monthly, some annual, meetings. This is a great income and support for the centre, so if you are ever in need of a room for a social/group meeting please do consider Hamilton House. Its available 7 days a week, daytime and evenings, has free parking, use of a kitchen if required and is just £40-50 per day.

In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon and nutmeg over medium heat until heated through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Kahlúa.

So cozy, so boozy, and so perfect for these chilly nights!

Mix the dried fruit with the sugar, cinnamon sticks, mixed spice, cloves, grated nutmeg and citrus zest in a large bowl.

Pour over the vodka, and cover tightly with cling film.

Place in the fridge and leave for 3 days, stirring once each day.

Line a sieve with a double layer of fine muslin and place over a large, clean jug.

Pour the dried fruit and vodka mixture into the sieve and allow to drip through into the jug.

Pour into a sterilized bottle.

This couldn’t be easy. After those cold winter walks simply - Mix all ingredients in a large pot over medium-low heat. While the cider is warming up, rim the glasses with brown sugar. Serves 4

A small group of us are trying to get a Christmas Tree put up on Bilton Village Green. We thought it would be a lovely addition to the village and bring a sense of community.

So far we have the agreement of Rugby Borough Council but now need to raise funds to help cover costs. Lots of local businesses are clubbing together as are local residents who know about it.

Stay healthy this Festive Season and avoid that overindulgence!

Well it is nearly that time of year again and I don’t know about you but for me Christmases seem to come around much quicker these days. It’s November and the shops are already brimming with Christmas fare, in particular mincepies at the checkout in some supermarkets. I have to confess that mincepies are a weakness of mine – I love them warm with some Stilton! Not at all good for the waistline so I have promised myself that there will be no mincepies until Christmas week.

Christmas is such a wonderful time and one we should all enjoy. We have the chance to catch up with our nearest and dearest and spread some good will. Indeed a happy thought – joy and peace to the world. There are of course the difficulties associated with all this merriment. Over indulgence of any kind is not good for our health.

Resisting overeating and drinking takes willpower and determination; try and plan your strategy. There are some festive foods that are actually very healthy so make your choices accordingly. Smoked salmon has only 80 calories per portion and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that eating plenty of oily fish protects us from the risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease; it can also improve the condition of your skin, hair, and mood.

Turkey is a good source of protein and contains about half the saturated fat of red meat. It also contains the antioxidant selenium which may provide protection against cancer. Remove the skin to make it even healthier and reduce the calories per portion by 50. If you are the cook make your bread sauce with skimmed milk which reduces the calorie count by almost a third. Steam your vegetables and avoid adding butter which only adds calories. Brussels sprouts provide us with vitamin C, plus folic acid, which are both depleted when we drink alcohol.

Avoid too many roast potatoes as they soak up fat and are full of calories, fill up on other vegetables.

Christmas pudding is full of dried fruit with fibre, potassium and iron and low in fat so try not to spoil it by too much cream, custard or brandy sauce which are all full of calories. Satsumas are one of the traditional Christmas fruits, consume these with confidence, they are packed with vitamin C; eat them as a snack instead of raiding the chocolate box.

Avoid salted nuts particularly peanuts which add lots of calories and make you thirsty so encourage us to drink more alcohol. Plain unsalted nuts can be a healthy snack as they contain monounsaturated fat which can help lower cholesterol. Brazil nuts are the richest source of the antioxidant selenium, walnuts and almonds are rich in vitamin E, which has wonderful anti-ageing properties.

Below are my tips to help you stay healthy this Christmas.

Alcohol dehydrates the body, is very fattening because of its sugar content and also puts a tremendous strain on the liver. To avoid dehydration, have at least one glass of water for every glass of alcoholic drink. This one is just for the girls - “My mother used to say “Booze in wits out” so remember alcohol clouds our judgment and makes us vulnerable and sometimes stupid. Don’t wake up feeling like hell; value yourself and your health and also avoid those extra pounds.

If you are going out to a party eat healthily all day; nutrient packed foods including fish, lean meat or chicken with complex carbohydrates found in vegetables, and whole grains such as rice and corn will help you feel full and avoid the temptation of too much fatty food and sugary snacks.

Meander of the Month...

Edge Hill and a Theatre of War Climb a spectacular wooded escarpment and enjoy fine views over a Civil War battleground.

Distance 3.5 miles (5.7km) Minimum time 1hr 30min Ascent/gradient 280ft (85m) Level of difficulty Medium Paths Field and woodland paths, country road, 6 stiles Dog friendliness:- On lead in Radway and Ratley, under close control on Centenary Way Parking Radway village Public toilets:- None on route 1. Walk through the village of Radway to the church. Veer left here into West End and pass alongside the grounds of The Grange on your left. Curve left by a pond and some thatched cottages. The 19th-century Methodist chapel can be seen here. Follow the lane as it becomes a stony track and go through a kissing gate into a field. Walk ahead to a stile and continue ahead across the sloping field towards Radway Tower, now the Castle Inn. Look for a gap in the hedge by an inspection cover and maintain the same direction, climbing steeply towards the wooded escarpment.

2. Make for a stile and enter the wood. Continue straight over the junction and follow the markers for the Macmillan Way up the slope to the road. With the Castle Inn on your right, turn left for several paces to a right-hand path running between Cavalier Cottage and Rupert House. Make for a stile, turn left at the road and walk along to Ratley. When the road bends left by a copper beech tree, turn right to a fork.

Veer right and follow the High Street down and round to the left. Pass the church and keep left at the triangular junction.

3. With the Rose and Crown over to your right, follow Chapel Lane and, when it bends left, go straight ahead up some steps to a stile. Keep the fence on the left initially before striking out across the field to a stone stile in the boundary hedge. Turn right and follow the Centenary Way across the field to a line of trees. Swing left and now skirt the field to a gap in the corner. Follow the path down to a galvanised kissing gate, cut across the field to a footbridge and then head up the slope to a gap in the field boundary.

4. Turn left and follow the road past some bungalows. Pass Battle Lodge and make for the junction. Cross over and join a woodland path running along the top of the escarpment.

On reaching some steps on the left, turn right and descend steeply via a staircase known as Jacobs Ladder. Drop down to a gate and then follow the path straight down the field to a stile at the bottom. Go through a kissing gate beyond it and then pass alongside a private garden to reach a drive.

Follow it to the road and turn left for the centre of Radway.

The octagonal Radway Tower, now the Castle Inn, was erected by Sanderson Miller to mark the centenary of the first battle in the Civil War. It’s certainly an unusual venue for a public house and worth closer investigation. The Castle is open all day for food and drink at the weekend and there is a popular beer garden. The historic Rose and Crown at Ratley is a useful watering hole midway round the walk.
