Our ‘Design A Front Cover’ children’s competition is back. It’s been so successful in the past, I know lots of children love entering it and seeing their pictures in the magazine. So flick through the magazine and if you have a little one who might be interested in entering you can find all the details on page 36. Over the last month or so we have been working hard on updating & revamping our website and I’m leased to say it should be live early October. Take a look:

The Red Box Project Rugby

Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter

A nationwide, community-funded initiative to ensure that no young woman misses school because she has her period and lacks access to sanitary products, has reached Rugby. Recent research has found that one in ten girls in the UK has been unable to afford sanitary wear and 12% has had to improvise sanitary wear due to affordability issues (Plan International UK, 2017). The Red Box Project Rugby encourages individuals in the local community to donate sanitary items (including sanitary towels, tampons and pants) at donation points around the town – located in cafes, gyms, shops, offices and more. These donations are then collected and distributed to local secondary schools. There, the boxes are easily accessible through an appropriate member of staff and plain bags are included for discretion. Posters placed in the girls’ lavatories signpost the box, its content and location. Students can take the items they need for any number of reasons – not only affordability, but also issues of embarrassment or cultural restrictions. The Red Box supports young women throughout their period with as many sanitary products as they need, plus the added reassurance of a few left over to prevent a panic next month. This is what makes the project special. No tearful panics in the loo. No wadded-up toilet roll. No anxious embarrassment. No missed lessons or staying at home. No missed education. The project started in Portsmouth 18 months ago. Today, there are almost 1000 active red boxes in schools across the UK. There are now boxes in every secondary school in Rugby and more than 20 donation points in our area, including in Tesco and Sainsburys.

For more information, including a full list of places you can donate, please visit: Red Box Project Rugby on Facebook or email us on

Bespoke Independent Financial Advice You Can Trust P J L F i n a n c i a l S e r v i c e s was established in 2011 by our manager Paul Loveridge who has amassed over 20 years experience within the financial services industry, having grown steadily since then and we are now a team of six highly motivated and trustworthy individuals. We are a directly authorised firm of Independent Financial Advisers and Mortgage Advisers based in the midlands. We offer impartial financial advice on many aspects of both personal and business needs with our bespoke financial planning service. Here at PJL Financial Services the client really does come first and we understand and respect the fact that financial planning is not a one size fits all product, which is why our team of highly experienced professionals are committed to providing the very best advice for each individual client and we can guarantee that any advice given will be part of a bespoke package specifically tailored to you and your needs. We provide advice on mortgages, buy to lets, savings and investments, all aspects of retirement planning (personal pensions, company pensions, drawdown pensions and annuities), life and critical illness planning, income protection, insurances and estate planning. We often find that people have old, out of date policies and pensions which have not been reviewed for many years which may not be providing the best value for money anymore and by simply updating to a newer cheaper plan or even just altering the investment funds within an existing plan the potential returns can be dramatically improved.

Because pain is NOT normal!... Tracy Richardson describes herself as a Sports Therapist and Amino Pain Therapist, but she is so much more than that. With Tracy’s vast experience and expert knowledge of the human body her aim to get you pain free, hence her moto – Pain is not normal. Tracy works initially by building up a picture of your past illnesses, injuries and issues to give her an insight as to what’s going on and why it might be happening. Once equipped with the full picture she is then able to pin point the problem and get to work on it using a combination of therapies that she is fully qualified and trained in. For example: you may be suffering from a tennis elbow but that is merely a symptom of an issue elsewhere in the body and with all Tracy’s knowledge and experience and amazing understanding of the human body she is able to a) reduce your pain almost immediately and b) offer help, advice and a plan of how you can continue to help your body heal itself once you leave the therapy room. Tracy isn’t the sort of Therapist who you will need to see time and time again, only as many treatments that necessary to treat the issue, often just a few treatments. She is an ethical therapist and believes in giving you the tools & advice to help yourself, and empower you. Often there are underlying driving factors fir some conditions, so further treatment of course would be beneficial, but that would be your choice. Struggling to get pregnant? If you’re trying to get pregnant, did you know that acupuncture can greatly enhance your natural fertility and increase the chances of a successful round of IVF by 50%? This ancient Oriental Medicine, which is one of the oldest healing practices known to us, works on the principle of energy, or Qi and that all illness be that mental, physical or emotional is an disorder of this vital energy. By inserting tiny needles, (smaller than a dogs whisker!) into the body, we can create a balance of Qi, and restore health and fertility. Even if you have a condition such as PCOS or endometriosis, acupuncture can still help you. Acupuncture can help improve sperm quality in men too. In today’s crazy fast paced world, stress often has a huge impact on fertility. Acupuncture can help reduce stress levels, and restore the menstrual cycle to normal. This is incredibly important for an IVF cycle too as it can be a roller coaster of emotions. Anne Barnard is a fully qualified acupuncturist and clinical hypnotherapist based in Bilton, and is a specialist in Fertility and pregnancy. When you combine these two therapies you have an incredibly powerful therapy that can greatly increase you chances of getting pregnant. Anne is on hand to manage the emotional turmoil that often happens when couples are trying to conceive. 8 out of her last 10 fertility clients are currently pregnant. What a statistic! Anne offers a complete package from pre-conception through to birth, with sessions tailored to carry you safely through each trimester once you are pregnant. The final sessions will include hypno-birthing to ensure you have the most wonderful birth experience possible. Below are just some of the many messages & testimonials that Anne has received. Collect Seedheads: Don’t be too hasty to tidy up the garden leaving

browning plant stems standing over winter provides vital habitats for wildlife. But keep an eye out for the particularly attractive seedheads of poppies, alliums, nigella, agapanthus, teasels and the like. Cut these, keeping long stems intact, place them inside a paper bag and hang upside down somewhere airy indoors to dry. Any ripe seeds should fall into the bag and can be set aside for sowing. Once bone dry, arrange the seedheads in a vase or put them aside to be sprayed silver or gold come Christmas.

Weeding: Let’s be honest – weeds are a gardener’s ultimate nemesis. By investing your time now in a serious de-weed of the garden, you won’t have another mammoth task on your hands when the weather warms up again. Whether you need to clear the flower bed, the lawn or those irritating weeds that present themselves between the cracks in your patio or decking, be sure to use a combination of old fashioned elbow grease and weed killer. And research the solution you need so that it doesn’t have any adverse effects on other plants.

Harvest Apples: If you’re planning on storing the apples, they should be picked when mature, yet hard, with a mature skin color but a hard flesh. Gently remove the apples from the tree, keeping the stem intact. Sort through the apple harvest and remove any apples that have insect erosion or signs of disease. Find containers such as crates, slatted shelves, polystyrene or shallow wooden boxes. The ideal container will allow good air movement through the sides and over the top. Lay fruits in a single layer not touching each other. Place fruit carefully so as to avoid bruising. If necessary, apples can be stacked on top of each other but using a container with open-slatted sides will allow air flow. Handle fruit very carefully to prevent bruising Keep fruit away from strong scents that may taint them such as paint, fertilisers and onions.

manipulation has always been more of a general overall mobilisation/manipulation procedure at the site of injury/ complaint and adjacent areas. Mobilisation, which consists of stretching the joint rhythmically within its normal range of movement, is used more by Osteopaths than Chiropractors. The philosophy behind osteopathy is that there is lack of circulation at the site of the injury and this dictates the type of manipulative procedure. Chiropractic and osteopathy have similar backgrounds and some techniques used are almost identical. Both disciplines are conducted by highly qualified professionals and the treatments offered have proved very beneficial for many people. Always remember the importance of good nutrition for your overall health. A healthy diet can help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation and raising levels of serotonins. Include bright coloured vegetables and fruit, oatmeal, seeds and oily fish.

The low cost supermarkets often have fresh fruit and vegetables at much lower costs than certainly larger branded supermarkets. It is really worth investigating these alternative places to shop. Take a look at cheaper brands; there is no difference in taste and good savings can be made. I often talk about getting variety into our diet and vegetarian food is one way of saving on your food bill and also providing your family with healthy nutritious food. Even if vegetables are going to be more expensive this winter, vegetarian meals will be cheaper than when we add fish and meat. Pulses, such as beans, lentils and peas are low cost but also low in calories and fat but packed with much needed fibre, vitamins and minerals. Whole grains are best so always choose brown rice and whole wheat pasta. Also sweet potatoes are a great alternative to normal potatoes as they contain more Vitamin C and more flavour; you can even make wedges and chips with them! Even if you are resistant to eliminating meat completely you can always add more vegetables to casseroles and soups to make them more filling and nutritious. Think soup this winter so nourishing and warming on cold days and very cheap to make; please email me if you would like to try some delicious soup and vegetarian recipes. Writing a shopping list and sticking to it also helps us budget better; as does planning your meals in advance. Use ingredients you already have so it’s a good idea to get to know what you have in your cupboards. Sounds mad but you will be surprised how many ingredients get pushed out of sight. We are all guilty of wasting food we bought but did not use within the use by date. Bread in particular is one of the most wasted household foods. Reduce this waste, by freezing bread while it is at its freshest into portion sizes. Freeze in airtight containers to avoid freezer burn. There are lots of savings to be made if you become a discerning shopper and cook from scratch for your families or indeed for yourself. Live with joy and health. Elizabeth Beetham Tel: 07773 790736

Walking stick sells for £1,500! What have you got tucked away in the cupboards?... This interesting Italian olivewood monkey on a stick walking cane was one of the items brought along to a recent Mellors & Kirk’s monthly Art and Antiques Valuation Event at Dunchurch Village Hall. This knobbly example dating from the early 19th century is clearly the work of a virtuoso wood carver. It commemorates the battle of Verona, fought between the Habsburg Austrian army and Napoleon’s French forces on 26 March 1799. The unknown maker’s long and cryptic Latin inscription explains all, ending in typical style “For the support of old age – which French brigands and the impious brood of atheists and Jacobins produced – I have made this stick and carved it enigmatically”. This he or she certainly did. It features on the handle a monkey in the guise of Napoleon, who was frequently caricatured as the ape, or the Emperor’s man-on-the-ground, General Scherer. The Austrian forces were partially victorious but the stick also refers to the Easter uprising against Napoleon by the citizens of Verona in 1797. Such is the delicacy of the carving that it was not intended to be used, although it is very strong and has gained a wonderful rich patina with age. It has survived in reasonably good condition. At the Nottingham auction bidders competed online and on the ‘phone before the hammer fell to a winning bid of £1,500. The event is free, there is no limit to the number of items that may be brought including jewellery and if the owner decides to sell they can be left for sale in a specialised auction as appropriate. Larger items can be viewed in the owner’s home by prior appointment. The next valuation dates can be seen on the advert below or call them on 0115 979 0000

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Cut the top off the pumpkin or squash and use a metal spoon to scoop out the seeds. Get rid of any pithy bits but Ingredients keep the seeds for another time. Put the pumpkin 1 medium-sized pumpkin or round squash (about 1kg) on a baking tray, rub with 2 tbsp of the oil inside and out, and season well. Roast in the centre of the 4 tbsp olive oil oven for 45 mins or until tender, with the ‘lid’ on 100g wild rice the side. 1 large fennel bulb 1 Bramley apple Meanwhile, rinse the wild rice well and cook follow1 lemon ing pack instructions, then spread out on a baking zested and juiced tray to cool. Thinly slice the fennel bulb and apple, 1 tbsp fennel seeds then squeeze over half the lemon juice to stop them 1/2tsp chilli flakes discolouring. 2 garlic cloves, crushed 30g pecans Toasted and roughly chopped Heat the remaining 2 tbsp oil in a frying pan. Fry the fennel seeds and chilli flakes, then, once the 1 large pack parsley seeds begin to pop, stir in the garlic and the fennel. Roughly chopped Cook for 5 mins until softened, then mix through the 3 tbsp tahini Pomegranate seeds, to serve apple, pecans and lemon zest. Remove from the heat. Add the mixture to the the cooked rice, then stir in the chopped parsley and taste for seasoning.

Ingredients 1.4 kg pumpkin or butternut squash, seeds scooped out, cut into wedges 4 free-range, organic, large eggs 150ml whipping cream 100g soft brown sugar 70g caster sugar (or 25g if using butternut squash, which is naturally sweeter) 75g self-raising flour 30g melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

For the Creamy Pears 4 ripe pears, peeled, cored and diced

kin P u d din g ump

20g unsalted butter 55g caster sugar 400ml double cream

Pack the mixture into the cooked pumpkin and return to the oven for 10-15 mins until everything is piping hot. Meanwhile, whisk the remaining lemon juice with the tahini, the rest of the garlic and enough water to make a dressing. Serve the pumpkin in the middle of the table, topped with pomegranate seeds and the dressing.

Method Heat the oven to 180C/mark 4. Place the pumpkin or squash on a non-stick baking tray and roast in the oven for 1 hour, until tender. Cool, then scoop the flesh into a food processor. Process until smooth, then add the remaining pudding ingredients. Process again until everything is evenly mixed together. Butter a large serving dish and pour in the batter. (I use a gratin dish, but you could use 2 smaller dishes, or even individual ones, so long as they are ovenproof.) Bake in the oven for 30 minutes, until just firm (if you are using smaller dishes, bake for about 20 minutes.) Meanwhile, make the creamy pears: put the diced pears in a frying pan and add the butter and sugar. Cook over a high heat until the sugar is starting to turn golden, about 10 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in the cream. I serve everything together but you can serve the pears on the side if you prefer. Also, if wished, you could also fry a few slices of pear in butter and use for garnish.
