Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the October Edition of The Rugby Register If you have children or grand children I hope they are settled back into school, college or university. It’s been all change here with 2 of my 3 going to new schools; 1 has gone up to high school and 1 has moved up to junior school. Big changes and a whole heap of new uniform and labelling too! However they seem to be settling in so thats the important thing. Inside this months jam packed magazine you will find lots of wonderful local advertisers together with articles, features and local news. As in previous years we are running our very popular Design a Front Cover competition where children design and send in their Christmas masterpiece and the winning entry will be printed as the Front Cover of our December edition. 15,000 copies going out all around Rugby! All the details can be found on page 32. A new feature we are introducing from the next edition is Poetry Corner. Inspired by Elizabeth Beetham and her poem that opens her artcile this month, and after chatting with her about poetry we’ve decided to introduce this new feature. So if you are, or know a budding poet feel free to send in your entry and it may be published in the coming months! Send your
entries in to us either on email: catherine@ rugbyregister.co.uk, by post using the address below or via our facebook page. Have a wonderful October everyone,
Anne xx

Using the new technology mentioned above you will see what PDO thread-lifting is and here you can read about it... Otherwise known as ‘the lunch-time face-lift’, PDO thread-lifting has become a popular option for anyone who wants to look younger without resorting to the scalpel. Using micro-fine needles, tiny threads are inserted into the skin to form a mesh that stimulates collagen production. The threads dissolve after around six months, leaving a matrix of newly-generated collagen in their place. So while it seems like an artificial procedure, PDO thread-lifting is really just an effective way of harnessing the body’s natural skin-rejuvenating process. The procedure can be used to tackle all the tell-tale signs of ageing from crow’s-feet to naso-labial and marionette lines (which run down from the nose and mouth). They are also excellent for treating jowls and a sagging neck, as they help kill off fat cells, giving you an extra firming effect in this area and a more defined jaw. If you want the benefits of a face-lift without the upheaval of surgery, then this is the procedure for you. One of the reasons they call it the lunchtime lift is you really can return to work afterwards and no one will be any the wiser. You should notice an immediate tightening up of sagging skin and results will continue to improve over the coming months. Your skin will appear firmer, and any lines will be minimised. Our health is not just about what we eat although our diet has an enormous effect on our sense of wellbeing and a healthy diet can improve and help protect us from many diseases. We are however so much more than what we eat, our bodies need nourishment but we also need to feel loved, cared for and have a sense of purpose in our lives. I believe it is particularly helpful if you feel that you are contributing to life even in a small way. Most of us overindulge, feel sluggish and are a little larger around the middle than we would like to be! Do not panic, health and happiness are inextricably connected and I believe that is it more important to enjoy life and feel happy than worrying about every single thing we eat. Being a bit naughty sometimes is good for the soul. Perhaps like me you feel its time to start embracing some good habits to improve your health and happiness so below are a few suggestions: 1. Make the decision to change your life and improve your health. Make up your mind and set yourself achievable goals. If you are not within the normal range for your body size in relation to your height make time to do something about it. Talk to me about the Healthy Living for Life Programme which is not a diet but a way of life. Get a group of friends together and I will come and motivate and encourage you. Good health is the most precious gift; start loving your body and make the habit of looking after your health. 2. Try ditching all junk and processed food. I challenge you to eliminate all processed foods for just one month and see and feel the difference. Eat fresh food and lots of fruit and vegetables; reduce caffeine and alcohol and drink plenty of good quality water.
t O Os his 4. Many people shallow breathe which can ec cause fatigue and loss of concentration because it does not oxygenate the blood efficiently. Deep breathing ligame n is a wonderful way of relaxing the body. Poor posture can create many health issues, including back and mech a neck pain so think about how you are walking and sitting and make adjustments if required. nerv ni ous a 6. Understand the mind-body connection and make a habit of being kind and loving to yourself. I The pri ma believe we are all on a spiritual journey and it is important to understand how powerful the mind is in manip ulatio c o creating many situations we find ourselves in. Listen to your body and become aware of what does you mp l range aint a good and what is toxic to you. o f mo is v 7. Get balance in your life – from my experience being first in the office and last 3. Have a strategy for shopping and cooking. Plan your meals for the whole week so that you are not tempted to backslide into bad habits. Take pleasure in preparing food – cooking should not be a chore, think of it as a way of expressing love for your family.
to leave does not necessarily lead to promotion. Pushing yourself too hard is really not healthy, particularly if you are stressed so learn to laugh, relax and smile more, it can change your life! Live with joy and health.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care
All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.
CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

I may have made reference to an analogy between food and music in the past but for those that missed it…some of the best music involves 3 chords and the truth. In the same way some of the best food can involve three ingredients. My cheese, onion & tomato Quiche is such a dish, although strictly speaking it does contain a little more than 3 ingredients if you want to be pedantic! Quiche is the French word for...Quiche. Before I made my own Quiche I never liked them as I found every one I’d had to be bland and uninspiring but I am now converted. I especially love a quiche with boiled rosemary potatoes and salad and a little mayonnaise on the side. This makes a lovely light lunch or dinner but I have yet to have it for breakfast. I once had to barter this recipe to get myself out of a sticky situation in east Berlin, which may or not be true, but here you get the recipe for free without having to furnish me with moody papers, an exit visa and the names of dubious underworld chancers written on the back of a cigarette packet before they went monochrome!
The Ingredients Cheese: 100 grams of. I prefer mild cheddar but if you prefer something stronger then use something a little more mature. Onion: Sweet & red if possible. Tomato: A misshapen organic peach of a tomato lovingly prised from the hand of an adoring farmer, otherwise something large or you’ll be slicing it longer than you ought to. Pastry: You can be slightly foolish and try and make your own or simply buy one. Herbs: Mixed Italian or Provence. Dried mixed herbs will do unless you happen to be visiting a wild herb sanctuary in France or Italy. Single cream: 300ml of… Large eggs: Laid fresh that morning by a Hen called Henrietta if possible. Two of these are the amount we require so don’t worry if you can’t get three! The Method Lay the pastry over a Quiche pan and cut round the edge so it fits in and covers the bottom and sides like a pie ought to. Part bake this in an oven at 180 degrees weighed down by baking beans. Finely chop the onion and place in a frying pan with butter, salt, pepper and herbs. Fry these till they are soft and translucent. Break the two eggs into a measuring jug. Then add the cream. Season and drop in some herbs. Grate the cheese and set aside. Thinly slice the tomato in to uniform slices and also set aside. When the base looks a little cooked and golden then take it out. Spoon in the onions all over the base and do the same with the cheese. Next add the egg and cream mixture. Place the tomatoes on top covering the quiche in a manner that is pleasing to the eye. Bake the quiche for approximately 45 minutes or until the eggs and cream are golden and the tomatoes look cooked. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. This is ideally served lukewarm. If you need to reheat it, it is best heated in an oven to keep or re-crisp the base. I will assume you know how to boil potatoes. After they are cooked then strain and return to the pan with butter & rosemary and season. Make a salad with leaves, rocket, tomato and cucumber and a French dressing (see my earlier recipes). Enjoy with a white wine or at ‘three’!

DONT PANIC If you get an early frost, cannas and dahlias will be fine in the ground for a bit, even if their tops are browned. Many people leave them in the ground and mulch heavily, and they are happy for four or five years even in cold gardens if the mulch is deep enough. Once they show signs of losing vigour, it is time to divide and re-propagate, and in these years the old tubers will be lifted, stored in just-damp compost under frost-free cover, and divided or used for cuttings come next spring.

Bush Fruit Planting Many gardeners like the idea of growing fruit but find the business of rootstocks, pruning and pest and disease control too time consuming. Bush fruit (e.g. currants and gooseberries), offers a stress-free, rewarding entry to fruit growing. It’s also well suited to small town gardens. Late autumn is an ideal time to plant. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Plants tolerate a range of soils, but ensure the site is well cultivated, weed-free and does not get waterlogged. In early spring, apply a general fertiliser such as Growmore or fish, blood and bone at 70g per square metre. A mulch of garden compost or manure in early spring is also beneficial. Established bushes produce 4-5kg (9-11lb) of fruit. If you don’t have a fruit cage, drape netting over bushes. Fruit is borne on a framework of main branches that is maintained from year to year, with the exception of blackcurrants, where up to a third of the oldest, unproductive stems are pruned out in winter on established bushes.
Plant for Winter Colour Plant up spring pots. If you haven’t already planted some containers with spring colour, there’s still time to plant now using bedding plants such as violas and wallflowers, plus spring-flowering bulbs. Be sure to Keep your pots in a sheltered spot, such as under a porch, to encourage blooms through the winter and to avoid plants rotting off in the winter wet. You won’t get masses of blooms during colder weather, but any milder spells should see a good show.

SEE WHAT KBC CAN CREATE FOR YOU Kitchen & Bathroom Creations has been established now for just over 6 years, starting in a small showroom in Hinckley, quickly expanding into the unit next door to double it's size and more recently opened showrooms in both Warwick and Rugby. As the name suggests, they specialise in creating quality but affordable bathroom and kitchen renovations. Offering a full renovation package from design to completion, they take care of all plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling etc and use only qualified tradesmen with the back up guarantees on all goods and labour supplied. The Company is family owned and run by the Director, James Holland, his wife Victoria and father Paul, who ran his own successful furniture retail outlet for over 30 years. The Hinckley showroom has recently been refitted, now with 6000 sq ft of retail and warehouse space with over 20 bathroom sets, and our complete new range of kitchens and bedroom sliding wardrobes on display. After 6 years of trading, James feels the time is right to expand the business further to bring the successful formula of quality but affordability to other areas, and shortly in addition to Hinckley, Warwick and Rugby, will be opening branches in other areas shortly. James would also like to point out that over the past 6 years we have successfully completed over 1000 renovations, and this year particular emphasis will be placed on the growth of our kitchen range with the four best selling lines, Gloss Slab, Traditional Shaker, J.Pull Gloss, and the True Handless range being heavily promoted. James says " We are already cheaper than all of the big D.I.Y stores but by increasing our sales volumes, our prices will come down further, giving our customers even better value for money". KBC offer a free, no obligation planning service for your kitchen and bathroom and will either just supply your goods or fully manage all or part of your renovation project. If you just want to freshen up your tired kitchen, they also offer a door change service with many styles and colours to choose from.
