The Bible does not pull any punches when defining the Death state.

It tells us quite simply that it is “a return to the ground from which you were taken” with nothing else after that – “no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest”, so that in a sense we are no better off than the animals in the fields.

But equally it is at pains to point out that, for the man or woman who “Fears God and keeps His commandments”, there is a real cause for hope through the Gospel message for “He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved”.

So, a saving from death through resurrection can be a reality - although our eligibility depends on a certain course of action.

It is the steps that must be taken which form the substance of our Bible presentations in September 3.00 pm, God willing, when we hope to examine the route from death to life.

This autumn a group of local Bible students are organising a short series of evening classes to help people who would like to know more about the Bible. Fortunately, with a little help from those who have been there before, it is relatively easy to deal with a number of basic issues, especially when working together as a group .

Researching the Bible is not easy - Let’s work on it together Are you interested in history? Did you know the Bible challenges the reader to test its claims and predictions of many events before they happened? We are confident that you will find spending just one hour a week for six weeks analysing the evidence offered in the Bible to support the claim that its prophecies are genuine, really worthwhile. It will settle for you the question of the truth of the Bible and the existence of a Creator, one way or the other.

How about a new hobby/pastime?

Do you enjoy crosswords, puzzles, card games? How about a pastime that you can share with like-minded people and keep your brain in good trim all for less than the price of a cinema ticket, a round of drinks even the simplest lunch out?

Many people have played whist, or Rubber Bridge at home or in informal groups.

This is great fun and is an excellent grounding for the multi-layered game of duplicate bridge. Duplicate bridge is played by at least eight players, sitting four to a table.

The cards played at one table are preserved and transferred to a second table, and perhaps on to many more tables after that. The results for the hand are scored and recorded. To win, players must get the very best out of each hand they play.

The physical activity is limited to sorting and counting the cards, moving from table to table and the occasional greeting and chat with people at the each. However success requires learning technique, agreeing tactics, assessing the situation and gauging the approach of your opponents. Skill, practice, constant learning and good team work bring good results.

You may be quite content with doing your best and enjoying the company of the friends you can make at lessons or practice at a well-run club. Your club may offer keenly competed pairs or teams sessions. You may want to represent the club in competitions against other clubs, getting to see how bridge is played all over the three neighbouring counties, the nation, on cruise ships and holidays or senior tournaments all over the world.

Recent cheating scandals have revealed a thirst to win at an international level that has caught most of us by surprise, but it shows what can be a stake! Many of us have joked cynically that it’s the best evidence yet that duplicate bridge is a sport.

Beginners’ courses, and lessons for improver’s or experienced players often start in the Autumn. Think about refreshing and adding to skills you already have, finding new friends, and enjoying a new challenge at a very reasonable cost. There are many opportunities in the Rugby area to learn and play. Look for a friendly club, with a pleasant environment, well run sessions and experienced, properly qualified teachers and coaches.

If you would like a vanilla glaze mix the follow and pour over when ready to serve. 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/4 icing sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon+ cream (or milk),

A new era for MagiKats Maths and English in Rugby After six years of successful tutoring, the Principal of MagiKats Rugby, Richard, decided the time had come to retire. However, he was confident that his centre manager, Harsha, would be more than capable of taking the reins – and he was right!

“When I decided to pass the centre on, Harsha was the obvious choice,” said Richard. “Having worked with me for over three years, she knows the children and teenagers in our centre really well, so I was confident that she could take over where I left off and continue providing individual programmes for everyone.”

An accountant by trade, Harsha has also worked in the travel industry, but since 2013 she has worked with Richard at MagiKats Rugby – first as a mentor and later as centre manager. When offered the opportunity to become the new Principal, it seemed like a natural progression.

“The prospect of being in charge was both scary and exciting,” commented Harsha, “but having been to MagiKats HQ for my formal training, I am ready for the new challenge and really excited to bring the latest ideas from the HQ team to our Rugby centre.”

Harsha’s experience working with people to create individual travel packages has actually proved to be valuable experience when it comes to MagiKats. As every MagiKats student has a programme that is created just for them, Harsha knows how important it is to be organised and to get to know every student really well.

Harsha went on to say, “Over the next few weeks, I want to sit down with every MagiKats student and look with them and their parents to ensure they are able to achieve their individual goals. As we move into the new term, I want to make sure all existing and new students know exactly what they are doing. Longer term, I want to expand the mentoring team and ensure that the quality of our tutoring programme makes us the ‘Number 1’ for maths and English tutoring in Rugby.”

A final comment was made by Sarah, Director of Operations at MagiKats HQ. “Having spent the last several months working with Harsha, I am confident she will continue the excellent work that Richard has done in the last six years. The students at MagiKats Rugby will definitely notice a difference – but change is good!”

Nutrition?...

What is nutrition? The dictionary definition is clear, “The act or process of nourishing.” Do we really understand how to nourish ourselves and what we should be eating to support our miraculous bodies and improve our overall health? There are four basic nutrients that we all need – water, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Making good choices from these four groups will support your body and encourage optimum health.

Water Two-thirds of the body is water. Water is essential to life and is involved in every function of the body. It is required for all digestive, absorptive, circulatory and excretory functions and also helps maintain correct body temperature. Most of the population is dehydrated; one reason alone being that coffee is a diuretic.

Drink more filtered water and see the improvement in your health. Your urine should not smell strong and should be the colour of straw. I recommend six to eight glasses each day but every individual has their own requirement.

Carbohydrates Carbohydrates provide the body with the energy it needs to work efficiently. They are found in all the plant foods; mainly fruits, vegetables, legumes but also in milk and milk products which also contain carbohydrates. You already know you should be eating more fresh fruit and vegetables.

Carbohydrates are divided into two groups. The simple carbohydrates are sugar based and give us a quick energy boost. They mainly include; fructose from fruit sugar, sucrose from processed sugar and lactose from milk sugar.

Complex Carbohydrates also consist of sugars but they include fibre and starches these help release the energy more slowly. Foods rich in complex carbohydrates include vegetables, whole grains, peas and beans.

These foods are important for good digestion because they are rich in fibre. Always choose whole grain pasta, bread and brown rice.

Protein Protein is required for growth and development and sustains energy levels. It is essential for good health.

Protein is needed for the manufacture of hormones, antibodies, enzymes and tissues and more. The importance of consuming adequate amounts of protein cannot be over-stated. There are two different groups of protein, firstly complete proteins which contain ample amount of all the essential amino acids.

These proteins are found in meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs and milk. Incomplete proteins contain only some of the essential amino acids and are found in whole grains, legumes, and leafy green vegetables. It is important to consume the full range of amino acids but this can be achieved for vegetarians by combining say beans and brown rice. It has been suggested that is it beneficial for all of us to vary our diet and reduce the amount of animal protein because of the high fat content and also the dangers of antibiotics and other chemicals used in the production of poultry and cattle.

Fats contain the building blocks called fatty acids. There of m are three major types – saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. Children in particular need e l i game fat for normal brain development and good fats are essential to all of us because fat provides energy and m supports growth. Fat also makes food taste good. However, diets that are high in saturated fat can shorten echan life by predisposing us to heart disease, vascular disease, cancer and other serious illnesses. These range o t f mo i s are the vitamins and minerals that are essential for life. They are called micronutrients simply because they are only needed in relatively small amounts compared with the other four groups, water, carbohydrates, protein and fats. Good quality food should contain sufficient quantities of all the vitamin and minerals that we require but unfortunately due to factory farming and the use of chemicals and insecticides this is not true today. Supplementation is a big topic which I may cover in another issue. Personally I do take supplements and have felt enormous benefits from so doing. Please email me if you have any questions.

Meander of the Month...

Circular walk - Bideford-on-Avon An easy walk through magical woodland and along the banks of the Avon, with lots of trees to identify and wildlife to spot. Take a leaf out of William Shakespeare’s book to visit this picturesque riverside village in southwest Warwickshire (it is said that he took a tipple at a public house which was called the Falcon Inn!) Aside from tales of the Bard’s merry antics here, it’s a lovely place for gentle walks, picnics and boating, and if you are lucky you might glimpse the electric flash of a kingfisher. It has become a tradition for some families to reward their walk with fish and chips at the side of the river - but dont let them know the secret is now out!

Distance: 1.5 miles Difficulty: Easy Start/finish: Barton car park.

Nearest postcode: B50 4NP Terrain: Clearly marked woodland paths – perfect for all the family.

1. From the car park, cross the road into Dorothy’s Wood – a riot of blossom and colour in spring. Follow the trail through the trees until you reach the wide grass path.

2. Turn left onto the path. Continue until you reach a clearing in the woodland with a play area. Turn right and follow the path up the hill.

5. At the hedge turn left for 50m, then right and out of the wood following the post and rail fence down the field to the road. Cross the road into the woodland on the other side and turn right along the brook for about 80m to a wooden bridge over the brook.

6. Cross the brook on the wooden bridge and enter Roman Field Wood.

7. Walk up the slope. Bear left and follow the arrows through a gate and cross the road. Join the public footpath for a short stretch.

9. Go through the pedestrian gate on the left into the river meadows and head to the River Avon. Walk left along the banks of the river, past Pilgrim Lock with its large weeping willow.

10. Head downstream along the river and cross over the Noleham Brook via the pedestrian bridge. At the angling association car park follow the access track out and right in near roadof into the Barton Car Park.
