Recently a new client came to me feeling sluggish and carrying a lot of weight around his middle. We started a new healthy living regime and already he is feeling so much healthier and fitter. As I always say you have to “Move that body” if you really want to be fit and healthy. The benefits of regular exercise cannot be over emphasised.

Exercise boosts energy levels and makes you feel good. Exercise can also:• • • • • • •

Lower blood sugar levels and promotes insulin efficiency – fatigue is a symptom of blood sugar imbalance.

Help keep bowels working efficiently to eliminate waste products your body does not want and which can slow you down and make you feel sluggish.

Boost immunity which means you are less likely to get ill.

Burn calories and builds up muscles. The more lean muscle you have the speedier your metabolism becomes.

Encourage a good night’s sleep.

Improve your sex life Boost mood through the release of brain chemicals called endorphins.

Build some form of exercise into your daily routine and make it a good habit. Walking briskly for 30 minutes at least five times per week can greatly improve your fitness and health and is something you can do for the rest of your life. Recently I have been aware that my lower back has been a bit uncomfortable so this week I went back to Pilates – one of my favourite forms of exercise, and actually managed a yoga session too which is great for calming the body.

I highly recommend Pilates; it combines all the elements that I feel are essential for health and fitness: flexibility, good posture, breathing and strength. As we get older flexibility becomes so important.

The Joseph Pilates exercise system is renowned throughout the world. Joseph Pilates’ ethos was that we can retain the flexibility and fluidity of childhood movement for the whole of our lives. As we grow older we develop bad habits that affect our posture and movement. When we attend Pilates training classes we learn to lose these habits by taking control of our muscles and making them behave in a way that we consciously decide. This method of training ensures we take responsibility for our own health and that we develop an attitude of strength and confidence in relation to our bodies and this is very liberating.

Pilates is suitable for anyone of any physical ability, it is beneficial for the young and the old alike. There is no impact involved; no running or jumping so anyone can participate with relative safety. Pilates is an exercise without stress, strain or pain if properly carried out. This gives it a huge advantage over many other exercise regimes because it allows you to exercise every day and build your fitness slowly.

Pilates strengthens the core muscles which when they are sufficiently developed, allow us to make correctly controlled movements of the limbs. This limits the risk of injury both in everyday life and in more active exercise. When you become proficient your muscles become more balanced and controlled and posture improves. Rounded shoulders straighten; spines lengthen and have curves in the right places, necks become longer, and gradually heads that are pushed forward in front of the chest pull back to be more in line with the body. The result of this realignment is less general joint pain and can also reduce the incidence of headaches. Also as the chest is opened up, lung function improves and there is much emphasis on the importance of correct breathing patterns during Pilates training sessions.

700g pumpkin, peeled and cut into 1015mm dice 4 tbsp oil 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds 4 whole dried red chillies, broken in 2-3 pieces 1 tsp turmeric 2 tsp salt 3 tsp red chilli powder 5 tbsp sugar 2 tsp dried amchoor or mango pickle masala.

Method 1 Peel, dice and wash the pumpkin, then drain and set aside.

Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the fenugreek seeds and dried red chillies and allow them to pop. Next, add the pumpkin and stir over a high heat for 3-4 minutes.

2 Add the salt, red chilli powder and turmeric, then reduce heat, cover and cook until the pumpkin is soft and begins to fall apart.

3 Add the sugar to give sweetness, which balances the heat and spice and also makes the pickle glossy. Finish with dried amchoor pieces or mango pickle.

es Ingredients 2 cups fresh pumpkin seeds (from 2 medium pumpkins), rinsed and patted dry 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method Don’t throw those pumpkins seeds out - Toss the seeds with sugar, butter, salt, and cinnamon for a crunchy, sweet-andsavory addictive snack.

Prep: 15min, Cook: 130 minutes. Heat oven to 300° F. Spread the seeds on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until dry throughout, 50 to 60 minutes.

Increase oven temperature to 350° F. In a large bowl, toss the seeds with the butter, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Return the seeds to the baking sheet and toast, tossing occasionally, until golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes.

oil, plus 1 tsp onion, chopped clove, chopped pumpkin flesh, plus the seeds 100g split red lentil, a small pack thyme, leaves picked, plus extra to serve 1l hot vegetable stock pinch of salt and sugar 50g crème fraîche, plus extra to serve

Method

Prep: 15 min, Cook:35 min, Heat the oil in a large pan. Fry the onions until softened and starting to turn golden. Stir in the garlic, pumpkin flesh, lentils and thyme, then pour in the hot stock. Season, cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the lentils and vegetables are tender.

Meanwhile, wash the pumpkin seeds. Remove any flesh still clinging to them, then dry them with kitchen paper. Heat the 1 tsp oil in a non-stick pan and fry the seeds until they start to jump and pop. Stir frequently, but cover the pan in between to keep them in it.

When the seeds look nutty and toasted, add a sprinkling of salt and a pinch of sugar, and stir well.

Whizz the cooked pumpkin mixture with a hand blender or in a food processor until smooth, then add the crème fraîche and whizz again.

Taste for seasoning.

Serve with a spoonful of crème fraîche, a few thyme leaves and the toasted seeds scattered on top.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible.

Meander of the Month...

Circular walk - Upper & Lower Boddington from Claydon This gentle circular 7 mile walk starts in the picturesque village of Claydon (just 35 mins from Rugby), and meanders across mostly flat farmland & open countryside, crossing the Oxford Canal at two points and touching the delightful villages of Lower & Upper Boddington. Claydon is Oxfordshire’s most northerly village. Local pubs only offer limited opening hours so check with them first if you wish to take refreshment Carpenters Arms, Lower Boddington and The Plough Inn, Upper Boddington. For part of the walk, you will enjoy the delights of The Millennium Way where you will be guided by the distinctive black waymarkers A - We begin our walk from St James the Great church in the picturesque village of Claydon. With your back to the church go L down the road then take footpath R signed Lower Boddington (opposite the junction with Fenny Compton Road). Walk between fences then take stile to field. Go ahead for a few yards and take care not to miss fence stile R. Take this fence stile, then immediately over second stile into field.

Continue ahead across field keeping hedge L. Go over double stile and keep ahead along field edge to take further stile to next field. Keep ahead with hedge L to corner of field then cross canal bridge and ahead through two fields to eventually take footbridge over small stream to next field.

B - Go ahead over dismantled railway line and take stile into next field to go quarter R across field and take double stile and footbridge just to L of farm buildings. Stay ahead under power lines with hedge and farm buildings R. After approx 200 yards take stile L, crossing the scrub to take further stile into next field. Go L along edge of field to take small plank bridge and stile in top L corner. Go quarter R across centre of field towards far R corner, through corner gap and turn L onto lane. Stay along lane to enter Lower Boddington and arrive at cross roads with Carpenters Arms ahead of you (Refreshment currently only available evenings and weekends).

E - Cross road and go ahead on cinder track past Cleeve House then turn R over stile immediately after the entrance to Paradise Farm. Turn L towards gate to R of farm building.

Turn R after gate and go to next large metal gate, cross bridge and immediately L through next large gate into field. Turn R to continue up field with hedge and fence R to go over stile and stay with hedge R to join farm track which bears L with fence. At the end of farm track go half L across field to mid hedge stile. Go through coppice to take next stile and then go quarter L to far corner of field. Take gap to road then turn R. F - Continue to road junction then go L (signed Claydon) and where the road turns sharp R go straight on through gap and along the bridleway. Go ahead across field to take gap and continue with hedge R. Go through wooden gate and cross field past two large trees to mid hedge gap. Take gap and cross field towards next mid hedge gap. (Here we leave The Millennium Way.) Do NOT take gap but go R along field edge keeping hedge L. Go through corner gaps of next two fields keeping hedge L and keep a look out for a concealed waymarked footbridge on L. Take footbridge into field continuing half R across to far corner stile and metal gate by canal bridge.

G - Go over stile to road then over canal bridge continuing gently up the road to reach a junction. Turn R at the junction which will bring you back into the peaceful village of Claydon.

C - Go ahead over cross road, and with Carpenter’s Arms on you right, walk along road through Lower Boddington. At the outskirts of the village the road swings L. At this point take bridleway R to Cleveland Farm. Go up track uphill, and at the top opposite barns take metal gate L to field. Go R with hedge R to field end and exit field by gate to road. Go L on tree lined road and after some half mile come to cross roads.

D - Go L on road towards Upper Boddington. Pass The Plough Inn L, and after some 70 paces take short road L to find T junction. (At this point you join The Millennium Way and will be guided by the distinctive black Millennium Way waymarker.)

At this T junction go L on Church Road pass post box L and school R and leave Upper Boddington, enjoy panoramic views R, and after some half mile road swings R as you enter Lower Boddington. Opposite first house on R take bridleway L, at junction of drives go ahead on lane to road

Remarkable Prophecies We experience many prophecies or predictions which fail to materialize. The vote for Brexit, and he winners of the Premier League are just two recent examples. It’s probably true to say that any prophecy that comes true is remarkable! Conversely if someone makes a prediction that actually materializes, we are likely to take their further predictions seriously.

Moses had a word of advice to the Israelites before they entered the promised land about prophets.

“When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not to come to pass, that is the thing that that the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken presumptuously. Thou shalt not be afraid of him” (Deuteronomy 18:22). Jeremiah gave similar advice. “The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet come to pass then shall the prophet be known that the Lord hath sent him.” (Jeremiah 28:9) When Joseph realised his fiancée was pregnant, before they had come together, he was naturally worried. But while he was still deciding what to do, he was told by an angel in a dream that he should go ahead and marry Mary, because the baby she was carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit - the power of God. Moreover, Joseph was to name the baby boy Jesus (meaning saviour) “because he would save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:19-21) Matthew further explains in his gospel record that this was a fulfilment of what the prophet Isaiah had foretold earlier, saying, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) Isaiah lived hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. It had been a long wait, but it happened. Remarkable!

Other prophecies have been made in the Bible that are very relevant to us and have not yet been fulfilled. Surely the fulfilment of the prophecy about Jesusʼ birth gives us confidence to believe that all prophecies will be fulfilled eventually. We can benefit personally from prophecies about the return of Jesus Christ, the future kingdom of God, a thousand years of peace and the promise of life for evermore. We can trust they are remarkable!
