Hi everyone and welcome to the January Edition of The Rugby Register Well a Happy New Year one and all! I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and that you are all looking forward to a positive, happy and prosperous 2017.

I am writing this just 3 days before Christmas as the magazines need to be printed in time for the new year so my welcome is short and sweet as I still have presents to buy, wrap and give!

If you live in or near Bilton I hope you have enjoyed the village Christmas Tree, it’s was hard work getting it there but when we sang carols around it with Bilton Silver Band present it made it all worth while - and yes I will be doing it again next year.

How about a new hobby/pastime for 2017?

Do you enjoy crosswords, puzzles, card games? How about a pastime that you can share with like-minded people and keep your brain in good trim all for less than the price of a cinema ticket, a round of drinks even the simplest lunch out?

Many people have played whist, or Rubber Bridge at home or in informal groups. This is great fun and is an excellent grounding for the multi-layered game of duplicate bridge.

Duplicate bridge is played by at least eight players, sitting four to a table. The cards played at one table are preserved and transferred to a second table, and perhaps on to many more tables after that. The results for the hand are scored and recorded. To win, players must get the very best out of each hand they play.

The physical activity is limited to sorting and counting the cards, moving from table to table and the occasional greeting and chat with people at the each. However success requires learning technique, agreeing tactics, assessing the situation and gauging the approach of your opponents. Skill, practice, constant learning and good team work bring good results.

You may be quite content with doing your best and enjoying the company of the friends you can make at lessons or practice at a well-run club. Your club may offer keenly competed pairs or teams sessions. You may want to represent the club in competitions against other clubs, getting to see how bridge is played all over the three neighbouring counties, the nation, on cruise ships and holidays or senior tournaments all over the world.

Recent cheating scandals have revealed a thirst to win at an international level that has caught most of us by surprise, but it shows what can be a stake! Many of us have joked cynically that it’s the best evidence yet that duplicate bridge is a sport.

Beginners’ courses, and lessons for improver’s or experienced players often start in the Autumn. Think about refreshing and adding to skills you already have, finding new friends, and enjoying a new challenge at a very reasonable cost. There are many opportunities in the Rugby area to learn and play. Look for a friendly club, with a pleasant environment, well run sessions and experienced, properly qualified teachers and coaches.

What is a promise? “ To say that one will definitely do or not do something” (Collins English Dictionary). Examples are “I promise to pay the bearer of this note … … ” and the Marriage promises (vows) made between two people more of a hope than a firm expectation.

Bible promises compared are unique, being made by God Himself.

They are made to individuals or groups and are conditional, just as the ʻpromise to pay” on the note is only to bearer. Marriage promises made to one individual in one specific situation are

conditional on acceptance and compliance.

There is nothing magic about being hypnotised, it’s actually scientific. The hypnotic state is brought about by various techniques, and you can expect to feel awake yet completely relaxed. The heart rate and blood pressure may lower and there could be a difference in brain wave activity. In this dissociated state the conscious mind releases and the subconscious mind moves forward. You’re fully in control in hypnosis, and you absolutely cannot do or say anything you don’t want to, and you will remember the All whole session afterwards. If necessary you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Hypnothera The techniques used in RTT are specifically created to change triggers in the brain, stop self-sabotage, release trauma and redirect the neural networks in the brain. Using these methods with addiction and weight loss stops the addictive behaviour and removes the fear of relapse. Addictions (and overeating) are habits of action, that are run by habits of thought. By changing the thought process, as well as the habit itself, long term success is always guaranteed.

Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB) is a specialised, evidenced-based, 12 week course designed to give those with chronic or recurring low back pain a toolkit to improve and maintain a healthy back for life. This yoga is based on a successful large scale clinical trial, funded by Arthritis UK in conjunction with The University of York. It is gentle, effective, enjoyable, beginner-friendly, with small group classes (3-12 people maximum) and individualised support. It teaches and motivates health and well-being self-management. It was recently endorsed by the NICE guidelines.

The positive results showing it to be safe and effective were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (‘Yoga for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Trial’ H. Tilbrook, 2011).

Who is the course for? The course is aimed at people who are experiencing low back pain (that’s 80% of us at some point in our lives!), whether it is chronic or episodic, but not at those currently in acute pain. It is best to wait until after the acute phase of your pain has passed when movement becomes more possible and you can then do the course. If you have a diagnosed spinal pathology the course may still be suitable for you – if you are unsure please speak to me and/or seek advice from your GP. The course is suitable for adults of any age, but is not suitable during pregnancy. You do need to be able to get up and down from the floor to do the course (even if you need the help of a chair to do so).

If you are unsure, please show your GP a YHLB leaflet or the YHLB website to ask if it the right time for you to do the course.

The next YHLB courses in Rugby are: 9, 16, 23, 30 January and 6, 13, February for part one of the course.

27 February and 6, 13, 20, 27 March and 3 April for part two of the course. This course will proceed with a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 8. Course fee is £175 which can be split into two payments of £87.50; the first payment due prior to week one, the second payment due prior to week six. Method Heat the oil in a non-stick wide, shallow pan, add bacon and fry briskly until lightly coloured, then lift on to a plate. Add the chicken and fry on each side until lightly brown. Set aside with the bacon. Tip onion and garlic into the pan and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and tomato purĂŠe, then stir over a low heat for 2-3 minutes. Add the wine, stock, lentils and thyme. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

Stir in the mushrooms. Add the bacon and chicken, pushing them under the liquid. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until lentils are tender and the chicken cooked. Season with salt and pepper.

Serves 2 olive oil, for frying 1 large onion, finely chopped 600g pork cheeks, excess fat trimmed and cut in half 1 tbsp flour, seasoned with salt and pepper 2 fat garlic clove, crushed 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika 150ml medium dry sherry 500ml beef stock handful flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked handful toasted flaked almond

Method

Heat 1 - 2 tbsp olive oil in a large pan then add the onion.

Cook gently for 10 – 15 minutes until softened and lighty coloured. Remove and set aside.

Toss the cheeks in the seasoned flour. Add a little more oil to the pan and turn up the heat.

Brown the pork cheeks all over in batches. Turn the heat down to medium.

Return all the pork and the reserved onions to the pan. Add the garlic, cumin and paprika and cook for a minute, then pour in the sherry. Use your spoon to scrape the bottom of the pan and mix in all the flavours.

Pour in the beef stock then bring the pan to a simmer. Simmer gently for 2 hours or until the cheeks are tender.

Scatter with parsley leaves and flaked almonds. Serve with rice or buttery mashed potato.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible.

I know it’s cold outside but there are still jobs that can be done in the garden at this time of year.

Sowing Seeds

Pruning Fruit Trees - At this time of year, apple and pear trees are dormant and so is a good time to do a bit of pruning and thinning out. Cut back the new growth to one or two buds.

Thin out branches that are twisted, growing and rubbing other branches. Doing these jobs will increase light and a good flow of air through the tree.

To finish off give the tree a winter wash this will kill insect eggs that maybe already on the tree.

• Antirrhinum needs a long growth period before flowering so sow in a propagator now for good results.

• Sow Begonia, Geranium (Pelargonium) and Dianthus(Carnations/Pinks)indoors now as they are slow to flower from seed.

• Laurentia (Isotoma) make fantastic container plants for the summer.

• Try growing your own Lobelia for bedding, containers and hanging baskets.

• Pansies can be started off indoors now, for a colourful summer display.

• Sweet Peas can be started in gentle heat now.

in g S h ru bs Planting Shrubs - It may be getting cold in the air, but the soil is still retaining some warmth. So it’s a good time to plant that hedge you have always wanted or shrubs and trees. Get rid of your old roses and replace with new. The warmth in the soil means good strong root growth, so get them in now before heavy snow comes along and the soil freezes.

You can plant out now Camellias, Azaleas, Conifers, Shrubs, Roses, Rhododendrons, Trees, plants and trees on display outside at garden centres are usually ones you can plant now, but its always best to check with a member of staff.

Firstly let me wish you all a Wonderfully Happy and Healthy 2017. Well I don’t know about you but 2016 went by so quickly I can hardly believe it has gone.

For me it was a difficult year, firstly because I moved out of my home of 23 years and I am still waiting to move to a new home. Also my eldest sister died in April and another sister was attacked by a man she knew. I could go on with all the distressing things that went wrong but that would be totally boring I’m sure. I prefer to remember 2016 as a year when I learned a lot about myself and although there was sadness and difficulties to overcome there were also some amazingly happy and fulfilling times. I think this is true for most of us; we all have our ups and downs.

Life is not always easy and there are certainly trials and tribulations to deal with, sometimes on a daily basis. When the going gets tough we have to be strong and remember to count our blessings and feel grateful for all the things we have. Being healthy is one of life’s greatest blessings so this New Year I would like you to consider looking after your health more. I would like to encourage you to make some good Resolutions. Not impossible ones that you will forget by the end of January but some realistic, attainable goals that will make you feel good about yourself. The problem with New Year Resolutions is that most of us just cannot sustain them, which ultimately makes us feel bad so this year why not ditch the resolutions and instead write down a list of things you would like to achieve. On the top of this list I would like you all to write, “I will look after my health this year!”

There is something very exciting about a New Year; it represents a fresh start, a new beginning, full of possibilities. In truth, we will probably all have overindulged, feel sluggish and little larger around the middle on 1st January 2017. Do not panic, health and happiness are inextricably connected and I believe that is it more important to enjoy life and feel happy than worrying about everything we eat.

Being a bit naughty sometimes is good for the soul. I advocate the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of the time be sensible, make good choices and the other 20 percent you can let your hair down just a little. Work at embracing some of the following habits to improve your health in 2017.

Start by ditching all junk and processed food. I must confess at this time of year I often throw away the rest of the chocolates and biscuits that have not been eaten. I know it is wasteful but when these things are readily available its hard to resist even for a Nutritionist! Eat fresh food; lots of fruit and vegetables; reduce caffeine and alcohol and drink plenty of good quality water.

Have a strategy for shopping and cooking. Plan your meals for the whole week so that you are not tempted to backslide into bad habits. Take pleasure in preparing food – cooking should not be a chore, think of it as a way of expressing love for your family.

Exercise regularly, it helps lower blood sugar levels, h keeps bowels working efficiently, boosts immunity, als burns calories, encourages a good night’s sleep and o ft improves your sex life so as I always say, “Move that The Body!”

The thing I love about fashion is that literally anything goes- if it makes you look and feel good, that’s all you need.

I love clothes, they help me express myself. I don’t just wear clothes because I have to, I love putting together looks and outfits for each day.

I want to help you find the right clothes to bring out your inner goddess, or the rock chick, or the Beyonce, as they say.

You would have heard stylists talk about finding your ‘Body type’. All that means is determining your body proportions.

Ladies, I am going to need you to use a full height mirror for this one. I would like you to take a good honest look at your silhouette, don’t focus on height or weight... focus on your shape. I will explain more about dressing your shape in a moment.

First, pick one or two of your assets…. waist, legs, bum, arms, maybe your cleavage or your neckline?

There will be something, don’t be overly critical.

Once you have decided, we can work on highlighting those assets.

Now, let’s figure out your body shape. Each of us is unique- and our bodies are too. My aim is not to change your shape but to accentuate and enhance what you have so you feel your best in every outfit you own.

There are five general body shapes: pear, rectangle, apple, hourglass and strawberry.

Apply these basic rules but focus on highlighting those one or two assets you have decided on earlier. On top of that, dress to express yourself, add on a statement necklace or earrings, a beautiful belt or a stunning pair of shoes.

Let your personality and confidence shine through.

And remember, it’s not about what size you wear…. it’s about how you wear your size:

Your lower body is wider than your upper bodyin other words, your hips are wider than your shoulders.

Your assets are usually your shoulders and torso.

Emphasise your arms and your waist, add volume to your shoulders and upper body.
