Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the February Edition of The Rugby Register I hope 2017 has started well for you all, and if like me, you are trying to be healthier, more active and lose the extra little bit gained at Christmas, I hope it’s going well. I’m suffering with a bad back, something I’ve had since October when I picked up an injury training for the Great South Run. I find it really difficult when I can’t exercise, I enjoy the ‘me’ time that it gives me. I decided to start a Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs course with Inner Peace Yoga a few weeks ago and I can honestly say it’s the best thing I could have done for my back. It’s a 12 week course and so far I’ve found a number of the yoga exercises/ poses really give me pain relief without turning to ibuprofen. If you’re a back sufferer I would definitely recommend the course. Leigh McLellan is the instructor and has years of knowledge and experience. I’m not pain free yet but a big thanks goes to Claire Hewer of Fit to Burst for her Sports Massages (they’re sooo good!), Rekha at Rugby Chiropractic Clinic for putting me back together, Anne at Anne Barnard Acupuncture for both the cupping & pins and to Leigh at Inner Peace for the Yoga. I WILL get this back sorted and get my trainers back on at some point in 2017!

Ok, enough about me and my woes let’s just get on with reading through this jam packed edition! From interesting articles to fabulous local business and 2 delicious recipes we have lots to share with you this month. So grab a cuppa, take a seat and enjoy!

Anne & Cat herine

If you are on Facebook, as well as liking our page I would urge you to also like the page ‘Rugby Independents’. It’s a page run by the local independent businesses that we have here in Rugby, aiming to keep you informed of what this great town has to offer as well as some great special offers and deals they may have on. There is also a new loyalty scheme about to launch, details on the FB page. Have a wonderful February and fingers crossed for a little bit of snow - the children are desperate to build a snowman and make snow angels!

Conservatory...

Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter

Conservatories look great and can be a lovely place to sit and relax, unfortunately the British climate often means they are either too cold or far to hot to sit comfortably. They can be expensive to heat and hard to cool down. So many people would love to make more of their conservatory. If you are one of those people then read on because Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions can transform your conservatory into a fabulous space which you can use comfortably all year round. Their cost effective value for money solution is to replace the roof - it’s no where near as expensive as you might think and is no where near as big a job as you would expect. By removing the noisy, energy inefficient roof that your conservatory currently has and replacing it with a lightweight treated bespoke timber frame, cladding it with durable slates or tiles that are 80% lighter than traditional ones, insulating it and finishing with a superb internal plaster finish the whole of your conservatory will feel like a brand new room - fit for many purposes - a new play room, an office, garden room or a lovely room to entertain friends.

Rugby teacher swaps the classroom for crafts A Rugby-based teacher and mum-of-two is combining her lifelong loves of working with children and arts and crafts to launch a creative business venture, inspiring youngsters through art classes, craft parties and workshops. Lisa Rodgers launched The Creation Station here in Rugby in January 2017 - part of a national franchise that has just won the Excellence in Children’s Education Award for offering the best creative play opportunities for youngsters aged 5 months to 11 years. Through her new project, Lisa aims to nurture local children’s imaginations and creativity, giving them the opportunity to explore a range of art and craft materials and processes, and also developing their thinking, co-ordination and social skills. Classes will include Baby Discover sessions, introducing babies from as young as 5 months to the wonders of colour, texture and artistic expression, and Little Explorers sessions for 15 months to five years. Lisa said; I’ve always loved arts and crafts and spent a great amount of my primary school teaching career using creativity as a tool to enhance other subjects and spark young children’s interests. Now I have my own children we are always painting or making Play-Doh models and its clear how much creativity excites them at such a young age! There’s always been a huge amount of physical and musical activities for children to get involved in - like sports clubs, dance and drama - but not many that focus on hands-on arts and crafts, although creativity and imagination are just as important for development. After teaching and advising in many primary schools in Leicestershire, Lisa wanted to find a new career that allowed her to still make a difference in children’s lives, but was more flexible around her own family. She said The Creation Station uses her skills and experience, and offers the same level of job satisfaction as teaching, whilst allowing her time to be a mum too. She added: I attended a discovery event in London to find out more about The Creation Station franchise, and I just loved the whole concept of nurturing creativity from a young age. I’m finding it so rewarding, especially seeing the children completely immersed in what they are doing, boosting their self-esteem and most importantly having fun! Lisa has received brilliant feedback from parents at her initial sessions. She hopes to build the business across the region throughout the year, making it accessible to as many children as possible. Classes take place at Dunchurch Village hall on Mondays at xxxxx, and at Long Lawford Memorial Hall on Tuesdays at xxxx.

Ingredients

Serves 2

f fle

400 g (14oz) apricots, stoned and quartered 1/2 tsp ground ginger 100 g (31/2oz) golden caster sugar A squeeze of lemon juice 200 ml (7fl oz) skimmed milk 15 g (1/2oz) cornflour 2 balls stem ginger, finely chopped 3 medium eggs, separated Icing sugar to dust

Method In a large pan, gently cook the apricots, ground ginger, sugar and 75ml (3fl oz) water for 10min until fruit is soft. Purée in a food processor or blender until smooth, then leave to cool. Stir in the lemon juice. Preheat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan) mark 5 and put a baking sheet on the middle shelf to heat up, making sure there’s enough space for the soufflés to rise. Heat 175ml (6fl oz) of the milk until just boiling. Whisk the remaining cold milk into the cornflour. Pour this mix into the hot milk, return pan to heat and whisk until thick. Spoon into a large bowl and cool for 5min. Spoon 1tbsp of the apricot purée into each of six 200ml (7fl oz) ramekins. Sprinkle stem ginger on top. Whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Set aside. Beat egg yolks into the cooled milk sauce, then fold in remaining apricot purée. Next, fold in the egg whites in two batches. Working quickly so as not to lose too much air, divide mixture among the ramekins. Bake for 15-20min until risen and golden. Meanwhile, get the sieve and icing sugar ready - once the soufflés are out of the oven you’ll need to work speedily. Dust with icing sugar and serve without delay!

Filled with dates makes this favourite guilt free Ingredients

Serves 4 175g pitted dried dates 150ml maple syrup 1 tbsp vanilla extract 2 large eggs, separated 85g self-raising flour 0% Greek yogurt and extra maple syrup, to serve (optional)

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4/fan oven 160C. Put the dates and 175ml/6fl oz water in a pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Tip into a food processor, add 6 tablespoons maple syrup and the vanilla extract, and blend until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and mix in the egg yolks, followed by the flour. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff, and fold into the date mixture. Put 1 tablespoon maple syrup into each of four 200ml/7fl oz pudding moulds and add the mixture. Cover each tightly with foil, stand in an ovenproof dish and pour in hot water to halfway up the sides of the moulds. Cook for 1 hour, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Uncover, run a knife around the edges, and invert onto plates. Drizzle over yogurt and maple syrup to serve, if you like.

Established since 1983

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

l Grasses

lw De a

Even though it may still be cold, damp and miserable outdoors, if we are lucky with the occasional dose of sunshine it may certainly put the gardening bug into you. Mother Nature may even send a few blossoms your way this month.

Cutting Back Ornamental Grasses -

Deal with Debris - Its time to deal with the waste material from the flower beds, gather up and put on the compost heap rather than burn, as many of the stems are still home to insects that will crawl from the heap when they hatch. The beds are raked clean in readiness for spring mulching and to make way for the bulbs.

int e a M

nance

Ornamental grasses fall into two main groups, evergreen and deciduous. Deciduous grasses need cutting back annually so that they will look their best, ideally just as the new shoots are coming through. Just like lawns cutting new growths along with the old will not harm the plant. Evergreens just require a tidy-up. The easy bit about evergreens is that they can need little looking after for the first few seasons however a quick rake through or tidy in spring is always good to remove the worst of the old leaves.

Maintenance - When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

You Look Great....!

We hear a phrase “Wear it with confidence…” a lot…

Dressing with confidence is so much more than wearing the latest fashion trend, it’s about feeling good about what you are wearing and feeling self assured in all situations. The truth is, how people dress is related in some way to how they feel. Just think of a time when you didn’t feel well, did you want to pull out all the stops and dress smart? Not likely.

Stay Positive!

I want you to think of at least one item, a garment or an accessory, which always guarantees you feeling happy and positive about yourself. For me it’s usually an accessory, a bold necklace or a bracelet, or a gorgeous pair of shoes. I know I always feel confident when I put a pair of heels on, it doesn’t have to be a sky high pair of stilettos but any heel instantly gives me a boost.

Dress for the occasion! Another aspect to feeling confident in what you are wearing, is to feel like you are dressed appropriately for the situation. So, if you are on a date this Valentine’s day, for example, wear something tried and tested, something you feel good in. Be seductively confident without revealing too much. Why is it when we start talking about dressing sexy we instantly want to wear something a bit shorter or a little tighter? Or a lower-cut neckline? Must we show a bit more skin to feel sexy? In fact, it is possible to dress flirtatiously without wearing something overly revealing? As a basic rule, you can reveal one ‘sexy’ part of your body. So if your asset is your cleavage, for example, highlight it, but you have to keep the rest very conservative. If you opt for showing off your legs, keep your top half covered up. If flirty is what you are going for, then leave something for the imagination. Try wearing lacy top with a nice skirt or a sheer top with a pair of jeans. Now that you have ‘armed’ yourself with a few tips on looking confident, add in all the previous knowledge of dressing for your shape and dressing for a special occasion. Once you have made all the best choices for You, you would feel comfortable in any situation. It means feeling attractive and authentic. Building confidence you need, will take time, but with preparation and some clear tips and ideas you can make the process easier. You will be happier with your clothes, you will look forward to putting them on in the morning and you will take pride in your appearance as you are a Brand. It really is worth the effort!

Do you need a tonic? It is February already and thank goodness Spring is just around the corner. As I am writing this article it’s a very grey, rainy and miserable winter’s day. Along with many other people I am feeling rather sluggish with all the overindulgence of Christmas and New Year and of course those extra alcoholic drinks. Many of you may be doing ‘Dry’ January no alcohol for a whole month which will be good for your body, particularly the liver. It will also help shift some unwanted pounds that have crept on over the last six weeks. Unfortunately I just don’t feel strong enough to join you this year as I am still homeless and feeling rather stressed - not good for a person who preaches good health. Also many people are struggling this year with the aftermath of colds and flu and general feelings of exhaustion. February is a difficult month with cold weather and short dark days and all the bad news about Brexit and the awful wars going on does not help. I wish the media would stop making things worse with their doom and gloom prospective. Sometimes a tonic is just what is needed to provide a lift to the spirits. First I would like to say that the best tonic for the body is laughter, it is good for the soul and gives us energy. If you don’t feel there is much to laugh about treat yourself to some old Tommy Cooper, or Morecambe and Wise or Little Briton DVDs. My signature is “Live with joy and health” – I believe without joy in our hearts we cannot be truly healthy and we will not have the energy that joy can bring so think of ways to bring joy back into your life. Remember how it felt when you were a child. Become childlike again – curiosity and enthusiasm breed energy so let your hair down, have fun! When we are feeling a bit down this affects how much energy we have. It is interesting that lack of energy can cause mild depression and frustration so to improve your energy levels - “move that body”! Being tired is a vicious circle because the more tired we feel the less we want to exercise but the truth is the more we exercise our bodies the more energy we get. Start slowly by going out for a walk in the evenings after work just a 30 minute brisk walk regularly will make a big difference.

If you are overweight this will also zap your energy levels. When you are carrying over 12lbs of fat it is like carrying a baby or small child around with you every minute of the day which is putting a strain on the whole body and is exhausting you. Make the decision to do something about it today. Please contact me about my Healthy Living for Life programmes. Always eat protein at breakfast it will sustain you during the morning and provide you with energy. I recommend a protein drink call SynerProtein which will give you a quick healthy start to your day and help with weight reduction. Contact me for details. Eat healthy foods and ditch processed foods which are full of sugar and drain our energy. Drink around 6 to 8 glasses of water every day – your urine should be a light straw colour and not strong smelling. Reduce your caffeine intake, it may give you a quick burst of energy but ultimately it does more harm than good. Caffeine is a diuretic, dehydrating the body and taking with it important vitamins and minerals e.g. calcium and potassium which may result in a loss of energy.

t O Os his also In Chinese medicine a tonic is a superior of th medication because it works on the whole T body – a panacea. It is from Chinese medicine he p of m ec that the great tonics are found and the one I ligam en would recommend is Siberian Ginseng. This m herb is an adaptogen, i.e. it works in the body echan nerv where it is needed and is famed for its ability to ous a The p r boost energy and support the immune system. mani ima pulati I also recommend garlic and ginger which c o are wonderful natural tonics and are easy rto mplaint a ange of m include in your diet. Make your is o own lemon and ginger tea it’s delicious and makes you feel nice and warm inside. Live with joy and health. In search of some winter sunshine? The Canary Islands have always been a firm favourite but which one will be your cup of tea? Tenerife - for the holiday-maker that can’t relax and needs to be exploring the outdoors! The largest of the islands, so you will never be short of things to do. Home to Mount Teide, Spain’s tallest peak, which makes this place a dream for outdoor adventurists. Many people also flock to Loro Parque to see the various tropical birds and to the Zoo Monkey Park, which is a great day out. If it’s action packed water parks you want, Siam Park is a Thai themed water park which has already established itself as one of the best in the world. You can choose to lay back and relax on the lazy river or get a fast-paced adrenaline hit on any one of the other 28 rides the park has to offer. Lanzarote - for the fussy holiday maker that wants variety on their break away! Lanzarote is the perfect size for exploring, one of the main sight-seeing places is Timanfaya National Park which has a vast volcanic landscape and has been the setting for many films including scenes from Star Wars! Another top place to go is the underground entertainment complex of Jameos Del Agua, a product of famous local artist César Manrique, it’s built with cafés, restaurants and shops underneath a tropical island beach; the person who built it wanted to celebrate the beauty of this island. Gran Canaria - for the beach lover or sun worshipper! People typically talk about Gran Canaria and its beaches; it has many beaches that stretch for miles along the coast. You will find beaches like Mogan that face onto picturesque villages or beaches like Anfi del Mar that are covered in white sand and are great for the water-sportmad-other-half that’s with you. Fuerteventura - for the disco queens or kings and late night party person! Like Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura is well known for its beaches as there are 150 of them! Alongside that, the nightlife here is second to none. From quirky seaside carnivals to some top class night clubs, there is so much for you to enjoy. All the bars and restaurants here cater for holiday-makers that are looking to stay out that little bit later so a great place to visit if that’s what you’re looking for.
