Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Ken McIntosh feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rugby, Coventry and Warwick areas and

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Ken a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

So cozy, so boozy, and so perfect for these chilly nights!

Mix the dried fruit with the sugar, cinnamon sticks, mixed spice, cloves, grated nutmeg and citrus zest in a large bowl. Pour over the vodka, and cover tightly with cling film. Place in the fridge and leave for 3 days, stirring once each day. Line a sieve with a double layer of fine muslin and place over a large, clean jug. Pour the dried fruit and vodka mixture into the sieve and allow to drip through into the jug. Pour into a sterilized bottle.

This couldn’t be easy. After those cold winter walks simply - Mix all ingredients in a large pot over medium-low heat. While the cider is warming up, rim the glasses with brown sugar. Serves 4

Stay healthy this Festive Season and avoid that overindulgence! Well it is nearly that time of year again and I don’t know about you but for me Christmases seem to come around much quicker these days. It’s November and the shops are already brimming with Christmas fare, in particular mincepies at the checkout in some supermarkets. I have to confess that mincepies are a weakness of mine – I love them warm with some Stilton! Not at all good for the waistline so I have promised myself that there will be no mincepies until Christmas week. Christmas is such a wonderful time and one we should all enjoy. We have the chance to catch up with our nearest and dearest and spread some good will. Indeed a happy thought – joy and peace to the world. There are of course the difficulties associated with all this merriment. Over indulgence of any kind is not good for our health. Resisting overeating and drinking takes willpower and determination; try and plan your strategy. There are some festive foods that are actually very healthy so make your choices accordingly. Smoked salmon has only 80 calories per portion and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that eating plenty of oily fish protects us from the risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease; it can also improve the condition of your skin, hair, and mood. Turkey is a good source of protein and contains about half the saturated fat of red meat. It also contains the antioxidant selenium which may provide protection against cancer. Remove the skin to make it even healthier and reduce the calories per portion by 50. If you are the cook make your bread sauce with skimmed milk which reduces the calorie count by almost a third. Steam your vegetables and avoid adding butter which only adds calories. Brussels sprouts provide us with vitamin C, plus folic acid, which are both depleted when we drink alcohol. Avoid too many roast potatoes as they soak up fat and are full of calories, fill up on other vegetables. Christmas pudding is full of dried fruit with fibre, potassium and iron and low in fat so try not to spoil it by too much cream, custard or brandy sauce which are all full of calories. Satsumas are one of the traditional Christmas fruits, consume these with confidence, they are packed with vitamin C; eat them as a snack instead of raiding the chocolate box. Avoid salted nuts particularly peanuts which add lots of calories and make you thirsty so encourage us to drink more alcohol. Plain unsalted nuts can be a healthy snack as they contain monounsaturated fat which can help lower cholesterol. Brazil nuts are the richest source of the antioxidant selenium, walnuts and almonds are rich in vitamin E, which has wonderful anti-ageing properties.

Below are my tips to help you stay healthy this Christmas. Alcohol dehydrates the body, is very fattening because of its sugar content and also puts a tremendous strain on the liver. To avoid dehydration, have at least one glass of water for every glass of alcoholic drink. This one is just for the girls - “My mother used to say “Booze in wits out” so remember alcohol clouds our judgment and makes us vulnerable and sometimes stupid. Don’t wake up feeling like hell; value yourself and your health and also avoid those extra pounds. If you are going out to a party eat healthily all day; nutrient packed foods including fish, lean meat or chicken with complex carbohydrates found in vegetables, and whole grains such as rice and corn will help you feel full and avoid the temptation of too much fatty food and sugary snacks.

O When you go out for dinner avoid bread with the O meal, often we eat the bread out of habit, try and resist and save those calories. Make healthy choices hi from the menu, chicken or fish dishes with salad or als vegetables or try the vegetarian option for a change. of t Go for two courses not three or if you do eat three T he courses don’t feel you have to finish every mouthful, of m e leave a little on your plate. ligam

e Party buffet food often makes it difficult to make m echa healthy choices. I recommend you eat a well nerv n ou balanced meal prior to any buffet party; this will The p s stop you over eating all the wrong things. Try to rim avoid anything with pastry which is full of fat andmanipul comp ati calories. Resist those mincepies the odd one is fine la r ange int but don’t over do it by eating three or four, you o is raw f mo will regret it later. Choose crudités, vegetables are so good for us, and eat the salad, don’t linger around the buffet table take what you want and move away. Look out for my Healthy Living for Life courses starting in the New Year contact me for details. Have a wonderful Christmas and 2017. Live with joy and health. Meander of the Month...

Edge Hill and a Theatre of War Climb a spectacular wooded escarpment and enjoy fine views over a Civil War battleground. Distance 3.5 miles (5.7km) Minimum time 1hr 30min Ascent/gradient 280ft (85m) Level of difficulty Medium Paths Field and woodland paths, country road, 6 stiles Dog friendliness:- On lead in Radway and Ratley, under close control on Centenary Way Parking Radway village Public toilets:- None on route 1. Walk through the village of Radway to the church. Veer left here into West End and pass alongside the grounds of The Grange on your left. Curve left by a pond and some thatched cottages. The 19th-century Methodist chapel can be seen here. Follow the lane as it becomes a stony track and go through a kissing gate into a field. Walk ahead to a stile and continue ahead across the sloping field towards Radway Tower, now the Castle Inn. Look for a gap in the hedge by an inspection cover and maintain the same direction, climbing steeply towards the wooded escarpment. 2. Make for a stile and enter the wood. Continue straight over the junction and follow the markers for the Macmillan Way up the slope to the road. With the Castle Inn on your right, turn left for several paces to a right-hand path running between Cavalier Cottage and Rupert House. Make for a stile, turn left at the road and walk along to Ratley. When the road bends left by a copper beech tree, turn right to a fork. Veer right and follow the High Street down and round to the left. Pass the church and keep left at the triangular junction. 3. With the Rose and Crown over to your right, follow Chapel Lane and, when it bends left, go straight ahead up some steps to a stile. Keep the fence on the left initially before striking out across the field to a stone stile in the boundary hedge. Turn right and follow the Centenary Way across the field to a line of trees. Swing left and now skirt the field to a gap in the corner. Follow the path down to a galvanised kissing gate, cut across the field to a footbridge and then head up the slope to a gap in the field boundary.

4. Turn left and follow the road past some bungalows. Pass Battle Lodge and make for the junction. Cross over and join a woodland path running along the top of the escarpment. On reaching some steps on the left, turn right and descend steeply via a staircase known as Jacobs Ladder. Drop down to a gate and then follow the path straight down the field to a stile at the bottom. Go through a kissing gate beyond it and then pass alongside a private garden to reach a drive. Follow it to the road and turn left for the centre of Radway. The octagonal Radway Tower, now the Castle Inn, was erected by Sanderson Miller to mark the centenary of the first battle in the Civil War. It’s certainly an unusual venue for a public house and worth closer investigation. The Castle is open all day for food and drink at the weekend and there is a popular beer garden. The historic Rose and Crown at Ratley is a useful watering hole midway round the walk.

Now in their 5th year of trading is a flat surface cleaner, a high power Rugby & Fascia are going pressure washer with a difference; the Like usGuttering on Facebook and follow us on Twitter from strength to strength and have innovative design ensures a deep clean a fantastic reputation in the town but due to the design it cleans a larger for their quality of work & customer area than a standard pressure washer and service. without the messy splashes of dirt & water typically caused by the standard pressure Brian started the business when he washer. Making this one of the most saw a gap in the market as no one efficient and effective pressure washers on local was offering the services that the market. Rugby Guttering & Fascia do. The

business is always evolving and Brian is continually investing in bigger & better equipment. For example Brian has recently invested in a SkyVac, which enables him to clear out Guttering of 3 and 4 storey houses & buildings by standing on ground level due to the superb reach of the SkyVac. The SkyVac is so advanced that it also comes with the option of using a video & camera to view what’s in the guttering and is transferred to a screen attached to the pole while the work is being carried out. Saving unnecessary and timely continual ‘up and down’ ladder work by Brian and his team, making the whole cleaning/ clearing out process much more efficient. Gutter repairs and replacements are carried out to the highest standard and fully insured, as is all of Rugby Guttering & Fascias work.

‘Platinum Cleans’ continue to be very popular and include all of your outside plastics/pvc cleaned; window frames, garage door, soffits, fascias, window sills, guttering and gas & electric boxes. Sometimes we don’t’ realise how dirty these things have become over the winter months so it’s always good to give the outside of the home a ‘spring clean’. See their new Facebook Page: Rugby Guttering & Fascia for pictures of recent work and ‘before’ & ‘after’ pictures. You’ll be amazed at the difference!

So if you are thinking of freshening up the outside of your home/office/shop ready for the summer, or you have a driveway that’s in need of sprucing up or maybe you have moss/leaves/debris sticking out of your guttering and need it removed call Brian at Rugby Guttering & Fascia on 07716 863210 or 01788 313920

What is a Credit Union?... Rugby Credit Union was12 established in 2004 and CV21 is part2RS of the Albert Street, Rugby, town’s expanding voluntary sector. In March it 577900 moved into Tel:2016 01788 newly refurbished premises in Albert Street, having operated E mail: rugbycreditunion@btconnect.com from four previous addresses. The move fulfils an ambition to www.rugbycreditunion.co.uk locate to a more prominent position, being near to the main post office and close to the town centre. Although Credit Unions began in the 19th century there was a rapid expansion in the 1980s. They exist in over 100 countries, with 400 in the UK. They are not-for-profit savings and loans co-operatives, owned and controlled by their members who elect the board of directors. Credit Unions exist primarily to help the financially disadvantaged by encouraging them to save, while offering low cost loans as an alternative to doorstep lenders, payday loans and illegal loan sharks who charge extortionate rates of interest. Credit Unions are regarded as responsible lenders, since loans are based on a member’s ability to repay the loan. In the UK Credit Unions are regulated by the FCA, in the same way as banks and building societies. Interest rates on loans are capped by law, thus restricting the income necessary to run the Credit Union, consequently external grants are necessary in order to survive. Rugby Credit Union employs a part-time office manager working with a team of volunteers, utilising their skills and experience from a variety of backgrounds. Apart from the core business of savings and loans other services include School Banks, a Green Loan scheme and a Christmas Savings scheme, with all savings protected by the Government’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Most members join at the local office, but members can also join through payroll deduction schemes at their place of work. Anyone who lives or works in the Borough of Rugby is eligible to join and over the years close to 1,000 have chosen to do so. Loans can only be funded by members’ savings and for that reason a proportion of adult members are regarded as altruistic savers, that is those who save to provide the funds to make lending possible. To date Rugby Credit Union has provided loans totalling around one million pounds, taking many from the clutches of doorstep lenders and enabling them to gain control of their finances. New members and volunteers are always welcome. Opening times are 10.00am – 3.00pm, Monday to Thursday. The office is at 10-12 Albert Street Rugby, CV21 2RS. They can be contacted on (01788) 577900 or email rugbycreditunion@btconnect.com For more information visit the website www.rugbycreditunion.co.uk
